Note 8 new user - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hello everybody
Back to android os after many years using note 8 (exynos)
Have many questions want answers
1-My battery sucks so does flashing a custom kernel will preserve the battery??
2-After flashing a custom firmware can i be back to official rom anytime and continue to recieve official updates anytime as i may need secure folder option which is only found on official roms
3-any recommendation for a rom that is stable or a note 9 port for exynos note 8??
Thanks in advance and sorry for the silly questions

Custom firmware only after root, which will trip knox and thus the end of secure folder (irreversible)...

Congrats! This dwvice is really good, about your batt, why do you say it is bad? How much SOT it is giving you? Average SOT around here is from 5 to 6 hrs, it depends on how many apps you have, and which ones are those, facebook is famous for beeing a batt hog , there are some threads about this, now about flashing some kernel, I think that would help, but regarding the secure folder, once you root, or flash any custom firmware, you will trip knox, and samsung pay and secure folder will be gone FOREVER, there is no going back, no way to revert the knox 0x1 to original 0x0, so, think about it carefully, if secure folder is really important for you, you can only flash official unmodified firmwares, besides, if you trip knox, SHealth will stop working too, although there is a patch to make it work

You will get OTA when you flash an official firmware, some buddies report that it must be a firmware intended for the country where you use the device, and in some cases a specific firmware for the carrier that issued the sim card installed, but some others get OTA with only the firmware beeing official, I think it is carrier related, you will get OTA, just choose the firmware for your specific conutry and carrier to be sure, and if you tripped. Knox, no, no secure folder and samsung pay

I really would not know, I bought my note 8 in october 2017, since then I installed bk disabler pro, to avoid updates,, and I did not have intentions to root, so, I am running stock 7.1.1, for me it was more important to control running services and disabling unwanted apps, I heard rummos back then that samsung was blocking bk disabler with the updates, so I blocked OTA, my device runs very fine this way

Rooting, does it break anything? Can Oreo be rooted?

As mentioned above, does unlocking bootloader and rooting break anything? My previous Sony Xperia XZ Premium had high noise in images and image enhancements were no longer working after unlocking bootloader.
1 - Can I root after updating to Android 8 Oreo or must I first root when using stock Nougat?
2 - If rooting, unlocking bootloader, aside from Samsung Pay not working, anything else affected? Camera or other software such as image enhancements?
My Note 8 was only ordered yesterday and I'm due to receive it Monday so was thinking of rooting as I have some apps that require root access. Thanks.

Yes you can root Oreo to easy if you have exynos version you cant update to Oreo if you already on Nougat rooted you must first unroot and flash stock firmware than update to Oreo and than root...in other case update to Oreo than root
with root you lose warrianty and samsung pay, knox and you cant update firmware until you not unroot.....about other apps like camera or something you dont need worry root not break it its work normal.
about root if you dont know why you need it than you not need it. I root my phone because need it for few mods and apps which need root. i thinking now to go back to stock and update to May security patch than root again.

For Exynos devices:
1. You can root on oreo as easy as on nougat! You only need correct Odin and TWRP version for oreo.
2. You will also lose Samsung pass, security folder and Samsung health. But Samsung health you can easy get back working with an build.prop entry.
Samsung pay, Samsung pass and security folder you will lose permanently

^ Thank you so much for your response. I am not at all bothered or interested to use Samsung pass & security, will never use either, just further bloatware I intend to get rid of!
I ordered my dual sim Note 8 from Middle East, 99% will be the Exynos version. I shall confirm once received the model number. I'm hoping it's the Exynos version as performance and battery life is even better than the Snapdragon one.
There are a number of apps that I use which require access such as root explorer, titanium backup and Adaway.
After rooting, if you want to get back to stock will the Knox count still be triggered and if so can you unroot and get back to stock firmware and still be able to use samsung pass?

Sow what will be the benefit of rooting for the note 8 since there is not much now out there to use root with?

Not much to those that don't need apps that require root.
But the ones that like custom roms and kernels and Viper4android audio and removing bloat and using backup programs like titanium backup and other things and like to mod their phone their way. Root is necessary! (They don't care for Knox or Samsung pass or secure folder or any related Knox feature.)

Try the rom threads for note 8 for custom roms. Look at weta rom for music type rom if you're into music for eg. But make sure it say for n950F and Not n950u.
I've just been reading haven't rooted mine yet.
Try them out and see what you like.
Titanium backup is good for backup of apps and there data.
Adaway great for system wide ad blocking.
Make sure to backup your efs partitions first!! Lose that and no imei and no cell network.

TWRP/Root & Official Stock Firmware

Hi.
Is it possible to flash TWRP and root with magisk, and then flash relevant stock firmware updates from Samsung using Odin as and when they come?
If so, would flashing said firmwares remove root and TWRP, and/or wipe data? Requiring re flashing TWRP and rooting again after each update?
Basically I'd like to stay relatively stock, just with root and TWRP. But I want to be able to keep the phone up to date without having to use custom ROMs.
And yes, I know once TWRP or root are used Knox is tripped and there's no way to get it back or magically make the warranty valid again. I don't care about that.

Yep, it's not great...
Instead of waiting, you could do a search on your own. This stuff is not from yesterday.
The answer is in s8, s8+, note8, s8, s9+ section. Basically someone has discussed it since Sammy introduced 7 days oem lockout, and ways to circumvent it... Those that know, don't feel like repeating endlessly, when time and search do the job.
The rest discuss wallpapers, screen protectors, cases, and justifications why root is no longer necessary (this from North American users, as if they could).

You'll lose Samsung Pay, Secure folder and Knox(?) Once you are rooted no getting them back, If your on Exynos models. On Snapdragon models (sm-n950u/u1) you'll lose them when rooted but once you'll go back to stock you'll get them back.)
The 80% limit is only for the root method for the snapdragons models (sm-n950u/u1/w). BUT you'll have to be on bootloader version 3 and below to get root!!! Once on bootloader v4 and higher NO MORE ROOT!!!(Samsung patched the exploit!
On Sm-n950F/N/F/DS (exynos models). You can root away but one thing to be careful of is the missing OEM switch in developer options and no more Samsung pay, secure folder when Knox is tripped. Once missing you'll have to flash stock firmware and wait for 7 or more days for the OEM switch to appear again. You can search xda for possible solutions that may or may not work for the OEM switch issue....

New SM-N950F owner here on T-Mobile

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is safe and healthy. Been out the rooting game for a bit but I decided on this. Unfortunately for me the 950U has an unlockable bootloader so I got the 950F since I still want to root and install a custom ROM. I just started reading and it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) there is a CSC mod (for Pie) to get your wifi calling and VoLTE working on the 950F if its to be used on the T-Mobile network. That's a relief since my main fear is what network specific features where going to be unusable if I went with the F instead of the U for T-Mobile usage. It seems also that (again, please correct me if I'm wrong) CSC mod is already implemented on some custom ROMs. I'm looking to try out DeluxeROM since it seems like a well stable ROM that has been out for a minute. I understand I have a TONS to read so I won't be even touching my new phone until I feel informatively ready. I'm just asking that if any of you would like to spare some of your precious time to share any info, tips, precautions, limitations (by not having a US model for T-Mobile), or anything in the matter...or if you want to say "[email protected]#k off and go read" I will welcome that too . Thank you much!

Although I can't answer your specific questions my precaution advice is to make sure you read the whole OP before you flash anything, and as soon as you have flashed TWRP make sure to backup your EFS file and keep a number of copies of it. Also take note that flashing TWRP trips Knox so Samsung Pay will never, ever work again. Tripping Knox does break other things like secure folder but most custom roms (based on stock filmware) have fixed it.
Deluxe Rom is a good choice!

Thank you very much for your response. Yes I've been fully aware of all that. That's the reason I never sporting a newest-n-greatest phone that I would have to get out in payments from T-Mobile. I always buy cash new, couple of gens back flagships for my daughter and I (I'm getting her the S9+) so I could do whatever I want to them w/o worrying about warranty service. I'm not a fan of anything Samsung when it comes to software so I do debloat most of it...including health, pay, galaxy store, knox, etc. My common sense is my own security...at the least its been so far. Yes I'm also aware about backing up the EFS files (I do keep separate TWRP backups for my devices also in my PC just in case). Again, thank you for replying and be safe .

Question Is it worth rooting?

So I will lose warranty in June, and require my phone to be rooted for a few reasons however, I just wanted to know is it likely that the screen could die like others mentioned? and will Samsung repair screen if it's rooted? Also how would I root it? Also could Google Pay work?
I Need root access since I live in a bad reception area and want to use Auto airplane toggle as it would save battery life and other mods.
Anyways, Sorry for bombarding people with questions
If your warranty is done by June, and you root the device after your warranty period, then it doesn't matter if you have a dead screen. You will still have to pay to get it replaced. In case you root before that, you will lose all functions related to Knox.
Thanks. Are dead screens common issue?
How do I root my s21 ultra Exynos?
@amirage: Even if you root after warranty period, you will still lose all knox functionalities

Rooting is also in this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...t-for-galaxy-s21-series-b-n-0-u-u1-w.4233567/
Btw I am also considering rooting, I just don't know if it is worth it, if there are some good mods that requires the phone to be rooted.
i'd root too if there is a way to revert Knox, if only to optimize them google apps under naptime, in particular, and squeeze out more batt juice, in general. but, sadly, no...
I finally rooted my phone!!!
Just one thing, How will I update my phone for future updates (like one up 4.1)?
You will need to download the latest release for your model from Sam firmware and flash it on your phone.
Every time I try updating my phone I get this error what do I do please help!?

You cant use the system OTA updates anymore. Use ODIN with Home_CSC to update monthly firmware.
