Is it just me or is there any other fellow Aussie wondering why the Mate 20 Pro is A$1,599 and NZ$1,422 (equiv. A$1,310). AND, NZ get the Emerald Green which I'd choose over Midnight Blue!

NZ: https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/huawei/huawei-mate-20-pro-emerald-green/352821/
What's even worse, NZ GST is 15% and AU it's 10%..... (both the above include GST in their price - I checked)

The nominal prices might seem odd to you, but the prices are based on complex economic calculations. Different country means different price levels, different average incomes and living cost etc.. Spending NZ$1400 in New Zealand might be very similar to spending AU$1600 in Australia (looking at how much you can buy with those respective amounts of money). Meaning just looking at the current exchange rate of both currencies does not give you valid info about the justification of different prices in different countries.
Also there can be numerous other reasons for it to be more expensive like varying coporate tax, customs, bureaucracy etc.. (one thing that comes to my mind is increased transportation cost across Australia....)
PS: In Germany the Mate 20 Pro is 999€ which equals AU$1600 (but it includes 20% tax). The average income is 3000€/month before tax (like 1800€/month after tax) essentially 999€ means more than half your monthly income. From my time in Australia I remember making a lot more money (2600/week , 1800/week after tax - roughly 7000 a month after tax). Buying the phone for 1600 would cost me a lot less when seen as a percentage of my monthly income. (which makes the phone much cheaper although the nominal price is the same). I realise that the average income in AUS is less than what I earned but i think 5000/month after tax is reasonable....even then buying the phone merely means sacrificing 32% of whats available each month compared to roughly 55% in Germany.

Problem is: what you dont pay in tax the company adds to its profit margin... essentially we all end up paying too damn much.

Still, better to be the one paying 1000$ USD than $1300. I travel to Ukraine quite often and it's insane that the same phone there is hundreds more than America. A Mate 20 Pro would be like 5months of average income there....

True, but in those countries "average income" does not mean as much as there is almost no middle - just the rich and the poor... (sadly the west is heading towards the same direction). So huawei only cares about what the rich can effort...
For all others they create sub brands like honor or xiaomi poco or oppo realme... each brand and its marketing directed to skim as much consumer surplus as possible and profit from each income group as much as they can.
Yes. The price is a joke. This is the price I'd expect when the next iphone and S10 are priced around $2000....

Well, it really depends on your law. I'm from Venezuela and we have a limit to such gifts that are not taxable, don't really remember though what is the sum. The easiest, but no the cheapest way is to have a friend to bring it to you, that way you won't have to pay tax. Any way, the cost of living in Australia is pretty low, can't you afford to but a phone locally? If we are to compare it with the real cost of living in Venezuela, it should be good enough.

whats federal paper?
I dont know exactly...
I dont know exactly if in your country exist that federal paper...
Here in Mexico it does exist... its like...
I buy 10 CETEs (it exist) it cost to me 9 mexican pesos very one so the mount I spend was 90 pesos... the cost of that paper is 10 MXN why does the cete costs to me 9 pesos?
Easy... the cete... is a solid federal paper... i mean the federal guberment sold that paper telling they gonna pay for that paper 10 pesos at sometime later... the period is 30 45 60 days... so the demand of cetes with the less time to pay for it are xpensive than the larger one... cause ist payable faster.. the gubern has fast money, easyway, so if my cetes are 45 days... I will sold them again to the gubern on 100 mxn at day 45... so I win 10 mxn in 45 days... but if i buy millions of cetes? i will win more and its doesnt lose its value.. cause its supported by the entire country!
BTW i dont have millions... so i cant buy cetes...

Why the hell am I paying more money for a marketplace app/game in Australia when the Aussie dollar is stronger than the US dollar?
I hear the quoted prices for apps/games on youtube reviews and was shocked to hear the pricing... It's not like I'm paying for fkn DHL to deliver it!
It's always like that, different economies different prices. It can do with tax differences, economy size etc. They wouldn't be charging you more without some good reason, we can all just speculate why.
I'm about to buy a new laptop, I always get it in the US cause I can customize it and it's a lot cheaper (roughly half the price) compared to the UK or DK. TOSHIBA isn't doing that for no reason...
The pricing for these phones unlocked is ridiculous. ANd if you want it cheap you are binded under contract. That is why I have cricket. Got my awesome ZTE phone for 160 with no contracts. I have a friend that is still paying for his phone plus 120 dollars each month on phone bills. That is way too much!

I agree:thumbup:
You don't want to know how much the Marketing costs.....
The campaign for the iPhone 6, for example, cost Apple a meagre 850 million dollars. The one for the S6 was somewhere around 600 million.
Now guess who has to pay for that...
Not to mention, do you have any idea how much money is paid in patent fees to other companies for every device? Of your 700 quid phone, 400 quid goes to about 60 different companies for the use of about 600 patents. 200 alone are Microsoft's.
Then there's development costs. Loads of prototypes, trial and error.... And phones don't drop out of the sky, the developers, engineers, designers, r&d staff and everyone else involved has to get paid, too.
Then there's psychology. They tested this in the USA. Give people the option between two identical phones, one for 300 quid and one for 700 quid, and 93% will buy the 700 quid one.
Why? Image. They think a pricy phone makes them appear(and feel) more rich and accomplished. And because of that, they feel a cheaper phone is of a lower quality.
People are incredibly gullible and susceptible when it comes to outside appearances. They'd rather waste 400 quid so they can boast to everyone about how their phone was so very expensive. It makes them feel better.
How many times have we heard this argument: "You're just hating on Apple because you're too poor to buy an iPhone".
And that's why we pay ridiculous amounts for a smartphone: because that's what the masses want to pay.
Sent From My Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N9005 Using Tapatalk
Well, the poster above nailed it.
You should also add more factors:
Screen resolution is a gimmick. If you have more than 250PPI or 300PPI, you wont really notice the pixels, unless you facehug your phone.
Performance. From the qualcom S400, S600, S800 lineup, you will probably be set forever. Unless you are a gamer, you dont feel the difference.
Smartphone camera. Get a DSLR, you will do better pictures and get it cheaper instead of paying more for nothing.
RAM is the only good thing about new phones. Having more RAM is always better because you cannot expect the guys who develop apps to be careful enough to do the most basic thing and remove the most dangerous memory leaks or their apps eating huge chunks of memory.
Yeah marketing costs, but there are always phones with good price, quality and performance. Think about some Xiaomi, Lenovo, Jiayu....
In the UK carphone warehouse sell payg phones but their handsets are unlocked to all networks! Just have to buy a top up when you purchase the handset then you can use any sim, no extortionate sim-free prices!
hi all,
I want to purchase Note 8, but it seems to much expensive for my budget. Even though with free gifts (which you can resell) if you add up taxes, it will come up the same.
What you guy think, lets say if i wait 2-3 months the price will really drop ( I am wiling to wait until the end of year if it make sense )?
One possible scenario is they may drop the price a little bit, but also discontinue gift option, which no make sense for me.
Does anyone aware of recent dynamics, based on previous Galaxy models, lets say S8 or so?
Or , does price really drops on Black friday?
Thanks in advance.

I suggest this will depend on where you live and how you make your purchase and what you are prepared to gamble.
In my country there are zero 'contract' sales. we all have to buy our mobiles at top price. There is also a sales price that all outlets maintain meaning regardless where one buys, it will be the same price, don't ask it makes zero business sense to me either. Having said that the law, in theory, protects consumers. If we don't like the purchase we have 20 days to return for a full refund. Warranty problems are generally taken care off. In other words its a relatively 'safe' place to buy a mobile.
I am paying 1,020.00€ for the Note 8. My SGS8+ cost 920.00€ , 100.00€ difference but if I take into account the free DEX offer, worth 150.00€ here, my Note 8 is cheaper than the S8+!
Now we go to the 'open market'. This can be a gamble and a nightmare. Sure you may get what you consider a bargain as many did with their Note 7 purchase from Dubai BUT when the woopsie hit the fan while I got a full refund on the spot TWICE for both iterations, those who bought from some other countries got stuffed. Not all but too many for comfort.
My point is you will get what you pay for. With an expensive purchase like this I use a reputable international outlet, FNAC, and am relatively well looked after. If I choose to do so I could also buy from, say Dubai and save tax etc but....
Amazon CAN BE a good purchase outlet BUT Amazon are using more and more third party sellers and many of those are not based in Europe meaning they are sent from China or where ever and that causes massive import problems here. IF one can purchase an Amazon sourced product that is sold by a vendor within Europe one can, after a small time frame, find the price of such items reduced. Again such reductions can mean grey imports etc. Check the sellers Amazon profile.
For me I pay top price in this country in the city I live near from a reputable outlet and sleep well at night. Not everyone is the same though, thank heavens.
Take care with such purchases its not the initial purchase than can be the problem, the problem is IF the mobile is a brick are you safe in getting a replacement under warranty etc blah blah. You pay your money you accept your choice.
Last point being how long are you willing to wait? Most of us here are techno nuts who want this device yesterday! No way would the majority of my peers here be willing to wait even an extra day to save a euro!

hi Ryland,
thanks for taking your time and replying me back.
The main point of this question is, if I wait 3-4 months will price drop ? I know it is hard to tell, but based on other models dynamics what you think?
Or lets say, if it drop just 150$ and no more free stuff , it means no make sense to wait...
I completely share your opinion that it is worth to buy from local authorized resellers...
I am located in USA..
3 to 4 months is a good time.. With s8 plus the prices fell a decent amount in 3 months..
I am on the same boat.. I want to buy a career device may be even used one. I m in Canada

yes, thats what I was thinking. Same here, I dont mind to buy a used one. Crossing fingers for battery not to go bad
Lets say how much S8 droped its initial price. I believe when it released, they were giving some extra stuff too, right? If the price just drop about same amount as gift and now dropped price option is withouit gift, it means there is no real drop, in that case no make sense to wait 12+ (3-4) months
In a couple of months you'll be able to get Note 8's off ebay at discounted prices as people will sell who've received free upgrades etc. Also set up Pricespy alerts online. Sometimes sellers offer 10% off deals for instance so you should find something in a few weeks. And of course it depends how successful it is!

exactly. I don't think the DEX thing is a good promotion either and obviously no one is buying it and they've a huge stock to dispose of (otherwise why not reduce the price of the phone and make it more attractive). Companies generally won't allow USB devices to connect to laptops and I don't have a screen or keyboard at home as got 2 tablets and a smart tv. There will be loads of DEX for sale for £40 soon as people realise its not getting used.

Mmmm, A lot of what you write holds water however I think the DEX, worth 150€ here, is a very nice free offer. I have no interest in the DEX despite being addicted to gadgets and tech toys, I do understand though that the DEX certainly has appeal to a wide range of other users and is one very clever set up.
I would not have bought the DEX simply because I have zero use for it and even though tempted I just knew it would end up in a draw collecting dust. As one is coming free I will try it out then after let it collect dust in a draw.
Just as a foot note the DEX is selling very well here and its been difficult to even find one in stock in any outlet. I guess such hardware sales will vary from country to country though. :good:

so i have my internet through Xfinity it is kind of required as far as i know. but go to https://www.xfinity.com/mobile/
and you pick the device and the "pay by the gig plan" cause then they dont charge you for data unless you use it. and go from there the note is like 32 bucks they have a protection plan for 12 more also. and after all of it you pay the 1st month payment on the phone (32) and the taxes (mine came to 67 bucks) so a total of 102 bucks give or take for me to preorder the Note8.

You rent a space at a post office in the US, and any packages that you don't want to pay duties or taxes on, you have them shipped there.
It does become an issue if they catch you doing it, but it's difficult for them to prove.
