I have started to experience GPS not being able to lock about a month ago. It sometimes locks and works fantastic, but when it doesn't, it's very frustrating, especially when you are trying to go to new places...
I have tried resetting the phone, purge GPS assistance data, flashed the latest firmware, but nothing works.
I have searched online and found several people complaining about the same thing, which leads me to think that it's a hardware problem that cannot be fixed.
I am thinking about getting a new one just to see if it'll have the same problem because the phone is just perfect for me.
Small form factor, side fingerprint scanner, dual speakers are just perfect.
Can any of you think of any other things that I can try to fix the GPS?
or do you think the hardware of my phone is damaged?

I have the same issue. It usually resolved after slapping the phone. I wonder if the GPS chip or antenna is loose …
sometimes I can get it working by rebooting but slapping it seems to work better.
Very, very annoying. Otherwise still the best phone ever!

I've spent over 1.5 hours this morning looking for a solution to the same issue, and this thread is where I struck gold.
I love Sony compact line, but having to slap the phone to fix an issue is just ridiculous.

I came accross this problem on my XZ1c, but I found a different fix.
Go into airplane mode and make sure GPS is disabled.
Settings\Apps & notifications\App info - find Maps
Force stop - Storage - Clear cache - Clear data
Restart phone
Enable GPS, airplane mode off.

Same situation here myself, tried all the solutions (even slapping) to no avail. I really like the phone but a fundamental feature such as GPS not working is unacceptable. I am going to try to get a replacement from sony but if this problem is pervasive as it seems then I may be in a similar situation again in the future. Seems like Sony bought a bad batch of GPS chips when they put this handset together, if I get a replacement I might just sell it, go back to the x compact and bide my time for the xz4 compact.
Hi
I had the same issue. Five days ago it worked fine but not yesterday. The GPS toolbox application found more than 20 satellites, but no one was fixed.
It was not the first time. I think the issue appeared for the first time after android Pie update. But I notice that I had a firmware update the day before yesterday.
I found a temporary and immediate solution right here when the GPS does not work at all. It comes from the sonymobile web site but I cannot post the link, sorry :
You may find the subject "XZ1-Compact-GPS-not-working-after-Android-PIE-update" on the web site talk dot sonymobile dot com for XZ1 compact
Use the following Xperia test Phone number to go in The gps settings :
*#*#7378423#*#*
Select gps then purge test data

I did not have to reboot my phone. I just launched the GPS location test right after and it worked fine and quickly.
It seems that the sequence may be repeated every week. It is too soon for me to say so.

Hi
I'm noticing GPS problem also. My XZ1 compact is still on Oreo . I've tried the solutions stated previously (except slapping it). The phone has been slow to aquire 3d fix and seems to have trouble keeping a signal. I've been using GPS Test Plus on my phone and on my cheapo Lenovo Tablet, and what I found out was the tablet got 3d fix much faster, accuracy on tablet was better (1 -3 meters compared to 3-14 and often much worse on my phone. SNR (signal to noise ratio) is in the 20's and 30's on the tablet and is in the teens and barely gets into the 20's on my phone. I thought GPS worked better on phone previously when I first got it, but this is the first time I did this kind of comparison and maybe it was always like this?
I found a solution although it essentially confirms it is a hardware issue. Taking the phone out of the case and squeezing the top left SD card and SIM card bay door restores the GPS, not long after letting go the GPS will drop off again. I did this numerous times as I drove out to the relatives this Christmas Eve and it worked every time.
Weird actually thinking having this problem after last Pie update..
After using apps like GPS locker and GPS fix from playstore, and putting aluminium foil in between the case, I manage to fix GPS temporarily and sometimes after restarting.. This all sometimes not working and as my compact covered with 2 years extended warranty, I just send it t Sony for board replacement..

9 times out of 10 it's down to cached data error
I came across this problem on my XZ1c, but I found a fix.
Go into airplane mode and make sure GPS is disabled.
Settings\Apps & notifications\App info - find Maps
Force stop - Storage - Clear cache - Clear data
Restart phone
Enable GPS, airplane mode off.
If that doesn't work use the following service settings number to go in The gps settings :
on your phone keypad dial *#*#7378423#*#*
Go into service tests, select gps then purge test data
Or just give some complete stranger teamviewer access to your phone.

Yes sometimes this fix do works. But I also figure out this is hardware problem after using gps locker app. When you squeeze the phone on upper left the signal is higher and you got instant gps lock. But when you leave the phone, the signal drops and you got very low accuracy when using gps, sometimes you missed the turn..

Can you explain further? I have a xz1c which drops gps sometimes
After trying all the of the stuff I've found on the internet (all software related, seems nobody has opened the phone to check or resolder the antenna) finally the only tweak working 100% of the time it's and external GPS antenna.
Still have the "GPS status" app installed to easy purge cache data, and sometimes seems to work, but when you really need the GPS it ****s you nor doing restarts, or whatever trick you remind.
I've bought a cheap second hand Holux M1000 bluetooth antenna, and now I've working gps when needed.
Hello everyone.
My phone started experiencing this problem now for 1 week. Its now impossible to do my running with the phone, as the GPS keeps constantly connecting and disconnecting. The data it collected after my run is not usable.... this was working fine for 2 years, then suddenly this has started. Already tried clearing caches, using 3rd part app to reset GPS data - all not working. sucks.
This the what the GPS problem looks like

For those who are wondering what the XZ1 Compact broken GPS problem looks like. Basically, one day your phone suddenly starts doing this.
Same problem for me. Everything went well until yesterday. It happened on my XZ1C Pie, then a tried to purge data and clear cache, but nothing. Then rolled back to Oreo and still same problem. Sometimes it works, but more often it doesnt. I use GPS very often and now i have to buy one more device

Same, I also need buy a new XZ1c now. I use GPS often for Strava.... one of my biggest use cases. So frustrating.
Addiction found
After a few days of searching the reason, i found following: when i remove the cover case (made of silicone) of my phone and get the phone in my hand it works perfectly, it locks about 20-24 sats, but when i put the phone on the car panel, for example, it stops working (locks about 3-4 sats o stops working at all). So the problem may be in poor sheilding on the motherboard, i think. Anyway, don't know for sure until open up.

UPDATED 4th August 2014
UPDATE: ONLY REPORT ISSUES IF YOU ARE ON STOCK ROM
Hey guys, here is a list of all the problems that i have seen on the xperia z forums as i was browsing.
just wanted to share and put it into one place.
Feel free to contribute, i will update post when new problems are discovered
NOTE: these are issues encountered on the 434 firmware
FOR 434 FIRMWARE:
1. weak wifi strength
2. phone does get a bit hot
3. camera takes a long time to load
There is a new 253 firmware that improves performance and the wifi signal strength and possibly other optimisations too
FOR 253 FIRMWARE:
1. Camera still takes a while to load, although it is slightly quicker
2. Wifi is still a bit weak
I feel the phone doesn't get as hot anymore and that the camera quality has improved
FOR 101 FIRMWARE:
1. Memory management seems to be an issue, apps stop multitasking properly after about a week.
2. people reported dialer and messages app being slow, although i haven't had that issue.
3. Camera still takes a while to open, just like on original firmware
TO DO LIST: new .227 or .230 kitkat firmware.
It looks like the wifi is actually strong now too
issues are slowly disappearing. yay
FOR 230 KITKAT FIRMWARE
1. camera still takes a long time to start
2. device has gotten laggier, most noticeably when pulling down the notification shade
3. Sometimes cannot make outgoing calls and cannot receive calls, restarting the device fixes the issue
Had my Z for 2 days now and have not experienced any of those problems. Maybe they are specific to units from certain markets?

1. LED not working for SMS, whatsapp etc
2. Stamina Mode sometimes not turning on/working
3.Music stored on SD card jumps for some users
4.Sleep of death where screen refuses to turn on for some users
5. Google services chewing battery for some users, although this isnt a specific xperia z issue..
6. A FEW users have reported some dead pixels
7. A FEW users report device getting abnormally hot
Thats all i can find for now

Are you sure those are all actual problems with the phone and not also due to the software/user? My opinion based on my one week experience with my Z:
1) Thought that my LED wasn't working too but then I found out that it doesn't work in stamina mode only - which makes also sense seen that the stamina mode cuts background apps/connections.
2) Isn't the stamina mode always on once you activated it?
3) seems to be a problem with slow microSD cards. Using a 64gb Samsung pro card with about 32 gb files on it without jumps
4) if you need to reset/reboot a smartphone and then it works fine again, it's not a hardware problem but a software problem. Should be a good idea to check if they use branded Xperia Z or if they bought it from Sony directly. And which country/continent are they from.
5) Has nothing to do with the Xperia z

Nice to have thread which state all issues found in xperia z.
I would be great if we can put solution for that said problem if one exist, it will be great help to the new user like me.
Sony Xperia Z will be my first smart phone,
I faced few problem with my XZ, no sure if some of the apps I've install may cause the problems.
- Camera unable to open and sometimes causing reboot ( even 3rd party app ie FX camera and activating from whatsapp have the same problem)
- phone took 5-10 sec to display contact and shows dialing when I call
- facebook occasionally crash
My just major concern is the camera issue.
Apps running:
smartstay
AVG anti virus pro
Stamina mode on
Edit: found the cause of camera crash issue, it was due to smartstay app.Uninstall and problem solved.

1. from what i have read, some people were having issues with the LED even with stamina mode off, which may be related to the next point.
2. i have seen some people where they reported that apps were not freezing properly during stamina mode :S
i can't "confirm" these as stated in the OP, its from what i have read,
but yeah, i get it home today and i will try it out and try to confirm some things

Had my Z for four days, first day i played it with wi-fi, no problems at all.
Day after i shuted it down (and waited for a min) and install my sim and new 32G sdcard, i switched it on and just had a second of vibration and then had no reponse.
I tried to connect the charge station, charged with USB connection, push the button for over ten seconds.... no LED or boot image.
At last i connected to computer with USB connection + VOL up + power button, then the charging battery image came out, then i could power it up again. That's wierd.

that happened pretty often for my on my G-Nexus, but it had about a year of use on it before it actually started doing that. I remember cause I would freak out at first when it wouldn't turn on but after a couple of minutes if trying different things it came on.
I'm having problem with gmail and current apps.
For gmail, when I open some mails it just close the app every time. (Can open just fine on my tablet)
For current, when I open feeds with other languages news. It just go back on the topic after I pressed to read (only English works)
And my device is pretty damn hot after using it for a while.
But overall I still love it more than my previous S3 lol.

i agree with the device getting hot.
i was using it and just setting up my phone through settings,
and the top part was almost too hot to touch...
but it does cool down pretty quickly, i left it alone for about a minute and it was cool

hmmmm,
still bugging me how the phone gets hot when not doing anything intensive..
I got my original Note 4 last Sunday. Since I use GPS navigation quite often, it is always one of the first things I check out when getting a new device. I found that it didn't hold a lock for long, it takes a long time to get a lock again, and when it does lock it's not accurate at all. I got an exchange today, and the same exact thing is happening with my new unit. A friend told me this would be the best place to come for help. She mentioned that rooting and custom romming might be the fix. I haven't rooted since my MyTouch 4G, and I've never used a rom. Can I get some help with that?
Also, I've tried waze instead of Google maps and that didn't help. And yes, high accuracy is turned on.
Thanks in advance!
Bump - any advice? On a different forum, someone mentioned downloading a GPS fix app from the Play Store. I did that, and I'll check it out on the way home from work. But ultimately I'd like a device with strong GPS natively. I'll try to exchange it one more time. I find it really weird that I'm the only one that seems to be having these problems!

Yes, on both devices.
Are you the same penguin from the a/c forums?
Sorry to hear you're still having gps issues with your replacement phone. Silly question, but is high accuracy mode selected in the location settings? Is wifi enabled?
Have you tried installing GPS Status? How many satellites can you lock onto?

Yep, I'm the very same penguin . High accuracy mode is indeed enabled. I haven't tried it with wifi enabled, I usually disable it when I leave home to conserve battery life. I'll try keeping it enabled on my commute home tonight. I've installed GPS status and it locks on to like 13ish out of 20ish satellites (it fluctuates a bit) when I'm stationary so that's not a problem. I haven't tried seeing how many lock on when I'm driving since I don't want to fiddle with my phone that much when I'm on the road. I'm still trying to get one more replacement before my 14 days are up, but the day is approaching quickly, and none of the 7 or 8 stores in my immediate area ever have any in stock! I call every other day and I'm sure I'm driving the reps crazy lol.
I've had this same issue with my first Note 4 on TMo but replaced it last week and havent had any issues besides very occasionally having a slight hang after making a turn and the GPS not registering it for a few hundred feet.
On my first note 4 it would CONSTANTLY lose GPS signal and be wildly inaccurate (not recognizing my turns or the proper facing direction) but hopefully *knock on wood* its been fixed with my new phone. I know you've already exchanged it but...
If you find a fix, please post it here just in case
I had the same problem with the GPS, it was working only on wifi but not with the phone data. But after a full flash it is working fine again. Also, it was very laggy since the first day.
I had a thread around here for similar GPS issue.
I actually got a PM from someone called SamsungSupport.
Anyway I think this is a compass calibration issue.
I installed the GPS Status app and recalibrated the compass.
The next time I used it (yesterday), I didn't have any issues.
I don't know if it has resolved the problem and I'll keep monitoring it whenever I use GPS.
I got my second replacement yesterday, and it's even worse than my initial replacement!! It's as bad as my first device.
I chatted t-mo customer care today and they were of no help. They kept advising me to do the same troubleshooting issues I've already done. Then, I chatted Samsung care and the rep was A LOT more helpful than the previous Samsung rep I spoke with. Samsung has a remote app that you can download from the Play Store, and the Samsung rep can remote into your device and see what you're seeing. We couldn't do much at the time since I'm at work, but I'm set to chat them back right before I leave work. They're going to remote in with me and actually see the issue that I'm having while driving. HOPEFULLY a fix will come out of all this!!
Bump. I'm on my FOURTH replacement now, same issues. What is going on?? So far, I've:
Recalibrated the compass
Tightened the screws underneath the battery door (they seemed pretty tight anyway)
Samsung support reps haven't been able to work with me using the Smart Tutor (remote into my phone to see/manipulate what's on my screen) app. They always disconnect the session before I get on the road, or maybe the session just drops.
Factory resets
Clearing the cache
I got my firmware reflashed at a Samsung kiosk at Best Buy
Make sure high accuracy mode is enabled (these days I never take it off since I'm always fiddling with my GPS)
Tried a number of gps fix apps in the play store
They want me to send in the phone for repair, but I have this nagging feeling that they're going to turn it on, see that gps can indeed get a lock, and send it back. Plus, there's no guarantee that T-Mobile will have a smartphone loaner phone, since they say that those phones keep disappearing because there's only a $50 deposit, so people just take the phones (this is why we can't have nice things). Since no one else is reporting these issues, it's doubtful that Samsung is working on a software fix for it. I'm really REALLY enjoying this phone otherwise, but I NEED gps to work!!
Samsung Note 4 Issue with Waze
I just upgraded from the Note 3 to the Note 4 two days ago and I have the same issue. It took me a few hours but I figured what they have done. They have program the Note 4 for totally hands free driving and if you want to use a GPS program it will be the one they have. You have to activate CAR MODE and you will see and hear your Waze in the background come on line and start to work correctly. Then if you close their program quickly, you will see Waze running correctly for about 5 seconds and the go back to acting up without GPS signal. The GPS signal with high accuracy is tied to the CAR MODE.
TMOBILE will never offer a smartphone loaner as per policy. GPS works fine not sure what ur doing
BAD ASS NOTE 4 + BAD ASS GEAR S
Hello All,
I am having some issues with the camera. I just got my Nexus 6 64GB on Sunday (2 days ago). I immediately unlocked it and decrypted it.
When I first tried to use the camera, it would freeze the phone. I would try and reload and would eventually get the "Cannot connect to camera error"
I rebooted and it it finally loaded. I can't seem to duplicate the problem now??
I am also seeing issues where the screen will get snowy when using camera. It is pretty sever and covers the entire view finder area. It will last lest then a second. I haven't been able to get a picture of it and can't figure out how to duplicate it.
Ok, happen again this morning and completely froze the phone. I am now getting the "Cannot connect to camera" message.
I just came from a Nexus 6 32 GB and never saw this issue. Any ideas on what may be causing it?
Got a screen shot of it!!
This is an example of what I'm seeing.

I flashed completely back to stock and still no luck.
And after the factory reset, the camera doesn't open at all.
I am on the line with T-mobile to get a new phone. I haven't seen anyone else with is problem so this may be a very limited problem.
Update: I am just going to return the phone for a full refund...
I'll try again next year, I am so tired of dealing with this.

I have a similar issue sometimes with the camera app not opening especially after taking a bunch of pictures. I've never experienced the snow like screen, sounds like a loose connection of the screen. However if I force stop the camera app it opens fine after.
Lately I have an issue where my phone camera jumps left to right while recording video or when HDR+ is off. Anyone seen a similar issue and is it software related or hardware?
Running stock ROM.
I haven't seen the issues you're talking about. Even when I force close I still had the issue.
Oh well. I'll wait to order again after the new year.
camera left and right

I've got the same issue with the screen jumping left and right while recording a video. Has it fixed itself for you or do you still have the issue?
Still have the issue. I have a post open on Motorola forums about it. People there in the forums think its hardware related. I have factory data rest and flash stock ROM but issue continues.
I have the same problem, I received my N6 on 12/19 but I haven't been able to get my back camera to ever work. I can get the front to work that's it, but the back will either freeze the camera app or display can not connect to camera. I ended up calling Moto and did an advanced RMA, just got an email this morning with my replacement's tracking info.

I ended up getting a replacement. The new one doesn't seem to suffer from the jumping camera issue.
Having the same issues. Camera will work fine for a while then boom stays on opening camera screen. After a while it will say cannot connect to camera. Motorola wants me to send it back but will not issue replacement first. I do not have Another phone to use in the mean time. Sucks
Tried multiple factory resets and clearing cache, force closing etc. Only a temp fix.
Forked out $700 for this , shouldn't have to wait for a replacement.

just contact them and tell them you want to do an advanced RMA. They will send you a new phone, but will place a $500 temporary hold on your credit card until you return the defective unit. I did that on Tuesday and my new 64gb Nexus will be here tomorrow
I remember reading somewhere that there is a fix for this, but i havent been able to track it down. I seem to remember seeing it somewhere on a rom page, but i also never was able to verify if the solution was working. If anyone can find a working solution to the camera all of a sudden no longer working after a new rom is installed, any information on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Same here, only when I flash liquid smooth rom.
I've been having the same cant connect to camera issue for a few days now. I've tried different roms, different kernels, and different camera apps. No joy. Sent for advance RMA. Tired of fussing with this. Hope the new one doesn't start to fail too. Moto needs to fix this or the nexus6 will turn out to be a bust.
Well, geez. I've been using this phone and its camera for about a week without issues, then suddenly the "Can't connect to camera" error popped up after taking a shot: the screen hung with a blurred view of the picture I just took, there was no aperture sound and the camera app hung. I'm on a virgin stock phone, too.
Force closing and erasing the app's data had it work for another picture, but then it hung after taking the next shot only a few seconds later, with same symptoms as above.
This time, Force Closing and deleting app data didn't solve the issue, so I deleted the app data once more and powered down/powered up. This time, the camera app came back for about five minutes of use - both videos and pictures - until I tried opening it again and it hung on that action (i.e., not in the picture taking action, as when the hang occurred before).
I'm seeing complaints of people losing their camera in the phone with this app since moving to Lollipop and that makes me wonder if there's something flaky with the Nexus 6 related to whatever in the OS controls camera access.
It's disappointing, but guess it's time to contact Motorola tomorrow. What makes this worse is that everything else on this 64GB blue phone has been stellar.

Following up to my prior post . . .
Kept the phone off overnight and have not used the Google Camera app thus far today, which has somehow led to taking pictures via other apps for the past half hour.
I wonder if there's a thermal issue at play, perhaps? This phone is in a dual-layer case and it seemed to work again when I waited a bit yesterday, after clearing the app's data and rebooting. I'm going to keep testing through the day unless/until it breaks again, but avoid the Google Camera.
Still, if the standard app doesn't work for me without eventually locking up - while many others have no such problem - it seems a call to Motorola for help is my next step. *sigh* I really liked how this phone was working, too . . . guess we can't all get lucky.

I requested an advance replacement from moto online last weekend but nothing has happened yet. Still waiting. Camera has not worked once despite various efforts including yours.

That sucks and sorry to hear.
After clearing the data and cache for Google Camera, uninstalling updates and rebooting, then trying out some other camera apps, I felt that the Google app gave the most clear and quick shots, so upgraded it from Play again and have been taking pictures each day since. Also read that other phones are getting this error under Lollipop, which makes me wonder.
If it happens again, I'll probably call Motorola, but this particular device is otherwise running so nicely.

In another thread, a Motorola support person mentioned that if the camera still doesn't work in Safe Mode, then it might point more directly to hardware in that case. Might be interesting to test before your phone is shipped out.

I don't know what might have happened, but this morning, I tried to connect my Phone to WiFi, and for some reason, it wouldn't. The WiFi toggle button that you see when you pull down the Notification Bar, now that WiFi button keeps turning on and off constantly. The time it takes between each toggle (on to off or off to on) is just about 0.5 - 1 sec. This is crazy. I can't connect to my WiFi.
I googled for solutions, no luck. I hard reset my Phone, no luck still. I wiped Partition Cache too. I entered into the Safe Mode, the same behavior happened. It's weird. It's like my Phone is possessed or something. A virus maybe?
Any input would be much appreciated. My phone is running the latest Firmware from T-mobile. And I got the update maybe 1-2 weeks ago and it had been working fine until this morning the issue started.
My phone just started doing this as well. Wifi keeps turning off and on. If I want to keep it off I have to restart my phone. If I want to use the wifi I have to manually toggle it from the wifi settings. Just weird it started doing this just recently. Maybe an app we both have installed?
I think I've found the issue. Sadly only after 3x reformatting the phone.
Go to Settings, Location, then click on Improve Accuracy, then turn off WiFi and Bluetooth Scanning (actually just the WiFi scanning would do the trick, but I decided to just turn off both of them). I suspect an update to one of Google system apps might have caused the phone's WiFi to behave weirdly like this. For the past 2-3 years I've had this phone, it had been fine with these two options turned on. It changed yesterday.
Let me know if this solution works for you.

Haha I was about to post this solution as well! Turning off the wifi in location accuracy fixed it. You're right about probably some Google app is causing this as this hadn't happened before yesterday. Sorry you had to format your phone to find this out...hopefully google or samsung can fix this from their end.
Thanks for this! Working for me (I'm on Tekxodus URv7.4R2 N5R9 with Emotion Kernel (r23).
Was driving me nuts. I'm a bit concerned about the loss of wifi for location accuracy though since my phone's GPS has been borked ever since i can remember.
Update: I noticed a recent review on the Play Store for Android Wear referring to a recent Wear update possibly causing the issue. I have Wear installed for a watch. Just curious if anyone experiencing this problem does NOT have Wear installed?

I just uninstalled wear and same issue persist. Last app from Google that I did an update on was Google home...formally known as chromecast.
---------- Post added at 10:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ----------
I just uninstalled Google home and the issue went away.
I do have Google Home and Android Wear installed as well. I checked the Google Home App Play Store Page and someone commented there pointing out about the issue too.

Yup that was me leaving a comment haha
i have had exactly the same problem for a day or two. while disabling "location>improve accuracy>wifi scanning" stops the bug temporarily it doesn't really solve the problem. wifi scanning is an important location feature when navigating. in narrow streets or in buildings one usually does not have gps reception, also the wifi scanning technique for determining the devices location is usually faster and uses less battery than gps (how ironic).
this bug is extremely annoying. i am on an unbranded, unrooted s5 on 6.0.1 (g900f). i can not believe that this also happens with s7 and pixel phones, this is really ridiculous (see similar thread on androidcentral forum. can't post url because this is my first post). if anyone finds a permanent solution for this problem, please tell us!!!

Is it your GPS or the Compass? If it can still detect your location but when you use, for example, the Google Maps Navigation, it couldn't really detect where/which direction you're going then it's probably just a compass issue. All you need is some calibration.
I fixed my friend's phone compass issue (and she thought her GPS was broken too) last week. The easiest way to calibrate: just download the GPS Status app and tap on the Calibration option and follow the instruction there.
Always try to calibrate your compass first as the first possible fix whenever you think your GPS is starting to go crazy, it might help.
Go to location>improve location>unchecked wifi scanning. It just worked for me
Uninstalling android wear seems to have worked for me.

Definitely not the compass, been through the calibration process. Attempted many fixes including special GPS settings and utilities. At times the phone can sit there with screen on for over 10 minutes without acquiring a single satellite. I'm thinking hardware issue, possibly contacts for the antenna. In any case, not relevant to this thread...
I rebooted into recovery and wiped both CACHE and this fixed the issue. I did not change any settings in any apps either.

I had tried this prior to reformatting my phone and it didn't help. I then wiped the cache again and reformatted the phone; in fact I reformatted and cleared cache 3x because the issue kept coming back after I reinstalled apps again. This is weird, the situation and resolution vary a lot from one user to another. Then I simply turned off WiFi Scanning under Improve Accuracy in Location, and the issue went away.
WHEW! Uninstalling Wear and Home did it for me. For now, anyway. I "fixed" it this morning by toggling Ultra Power Saver on and off, and it worked all day until I came home from work. Then nothing helped until I found this thread. Changing GPS settings didn't do it for me, but I'm still on Lollipop so my location settings are a little different.
Thank you, Febzz and Alan!
Google home was the issue!!

Changes in router's Wireless Security had caused it in my case
This is old thread but still I am posting this solution as it could be useful tip for someone in future.
I had this issue and was causing me real headache. I initially thought it was hardware failure of my phone but later I found reason is something else.
For some reason I had changed Wireless Security of my WiFi router from WPA2 Personal to something else (I guess WEP).
That was causing my phone (intex cloud 4g) often to turn on and off WiFi on its own. I changed the Wireless Security back to WPA2 Personal and phone is now back to normal (not turning WiFi on and off on its own)
Anyone else experiencing GPS issues on the S23?
Sometimes it will work fine for a day, sometimes for a couple of hours. Then it stops.
Occasionally rebooting resolves the issue, but generally it doesn't. Yesterday I restarted and/or turned off/on 5 times without resolving. Some hours later, it just starts working again.
Looking at nmea loggers and GPS Test app, when it stops it either shows no data at all, or sometimes shows signal from just one or two and never finds any more so can't get position lock (other than network based). My old S20 right next to it will show 18-20 satellites at the same time and never faults.
I submitted a fault to Samsung. They said the uploaded system log showed nothing coming from GPS (fault was currently being exhibited) and phone will need to go back. This isn't always the case however, as sometimes it works OK.
Is there anything I can try before I send it off?
Have others had similar issues?
Try restarting in emergency mode (SOS) and do your tests.
If I were you, I would factory reset or even install firmware with Odin just to make sure everything is OK.
Send to Samsung is the last attempt.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a go and see what happens.
Calibrate your GPS in google maps. Tap your location and it had you move your phone around to increase its accuracy.
