Not sure, but check your VM settings in terms of allotted memory, etc. Might be one reason for issues with larger files.

Give 7-zip a try.

Ah, I thought you were still in VM from the other thread... Still, I've only ever done this through linux, windows usually gave me too many headaches. Will post back if I find another suggestion.

How do I remove smartdial from tuma 1.3

Hi, can anyone tell me how to remove smartdial from the tuma 1.3 rom, it's slowing down my dialing speed and it is really annoying when I have to dial a long number. Thanks much for anyhelp. and oh yeah, I can't seem to remove the file that's reponsible for the graphics of the soft keyboard, it says it's in rom or something like that, I wouldn't mind it so much except it doesn't have a graphic for the letter d.

I think it only shows when you use large keys.

I was able to confirm the error. It actually occurs with large keys and use gestures selected.
Attached is a revised .dll with the bit map corrected. You will need to:
1. Unpack the attached rar
2. rename the "msim.96.dll.0409.mui" in the windows folder to something else like "msim.96.dll.0409.old".
3. copy the attached file to the windows folder
4. then reboot
Hope this helps.
Hi, the problem is that the file msim.96.dll.0409.mui cannot be deleted. When renaming it a new file is created but the old file is still there. It can't be overwritten either. This is very frustrating... lol

I've used Resco file explorer, it complains that it can't delete the rom version but it renames the ram version of the file anyway. You can then copy the new file to ram.

Yeah I used resco file explorer too, the included windows one doesn't even have a rename option. However when I finished renaming it, a popup windows says, can't delte file, and a new one is created. Where did you find the ram version of the file?
Lets try a more automated method.
Execute the attached cab file and then do a reboot.
Cool, it's working now, thanks for the program

Cannot delete even a file in wm6

it says "Cannot delete xxx :Access is denied. Be certain that the file is not write-protected and is not currently in use."
which file are u trying to delete.probably its a system file or a read only file..or its associated to a program that is currently running

sorry for misleading, I meant every file. Even though they are not use, blablabla
Still after i restart the phone, any file still cannot be deleted.
Bizarrely this problem is commonly caused by Microsoft Pocket Word, which can lock up the entire filesystem.

Gain extra space in ROM for cooking.....

Today I just tried this, I compressed my softwares which I have cooked in my ROM using UPX4PPC and cooked them in the ROM. As I have a small 32MB ROM, if this is possible to do with the default OS dll & exe files, it would be very useful. As I noticed, there is no big difference in the loading time of compressed files & the original. I searched the forum, but found nothing on compression of system OS files. Is there anyone who have done this before? Is this ok to do with .net CF dll & other large dll & exe files in ROM...?
making a smaller rom dont give more storage you know?
so compressing it will just give you more empty rom space nobody an use
Yeah..and most of the time the ROM won evenstart..blv me i tried to UPX the whole DUMP folder but the rom didnt even start

Actually I meant, If you can compress the originam OS files in ROM, there would be more free space in rom. We can use that free space to add more OEM packages.... Sorry if my english is not clear.

Try to use UPX only in exe files. More safe to be use in EXEs that are loaded after the booting & intended only in doing the settings (backlight.exe, MicAGC, Device info, CSD line type, CommManager, faxView.......) and on OEM exe files. Try not to use on dll files on first shot. But because already these files are very small, you will gain only a very small space. It works. If we can do the same on large dll files, it would be cool.....

You are right. Thats how I had been able to pack so much extra stuff (many dont like that) in the ROM since a long time. But you have to be very carefully choosy about the files you have to UPX.
And, of course this method is for cooks only...

What files can we compress. What I found ws, when I compress certain dll files, some items in menus related to them are blank. But when clicked they still work. Compressing Today dll files work, but if they have option configuration, they show some nunsence text. DLLs related to the .NET CF are the largest files i find in the ROM, can we compress them?

Why does File Manager HD destroy my files?

I keep having problems with File Manager HD, and it has pissed me off pretty bad this time. I was working with my SD card, and had copied the entire contents to my internal memory. I played around with it on my PC, then popped it back into my Xoom. Used it normally for a day. Downloaded files to it, copy and paste a few files, etc. At the end of the day I decided to copy my files back over. Did a multi select on my files, chose move, then paste in the external folder. The paste took about a half second. So I noticed my 6GB of files were replaced with the file names with 0.0k for the file sizes. I looked in the original location and they're gone. I shut down and booted to see no change. This isn't the first time it has done this, but definitely the first time moving a file over about 20k. Am I alone with these problems? I have never had that happen with Root Explorer or Androzip. Seems like some junky software to me.
You HAVE to copy and paste. You can't move files from one source to another. Otherwise the corruption happens.
I use Root Explorer and never have issues. Best money ever spent. That file manager is nice but I still prefer RE. Thanks for the heads up.

I would assume the devs have tries to be clever and copied the files then delete the original. I'm pretty sure the mv command would fail without data loss like that. Sounds like a poorly implemented file manager without the necessary failsafes for this sort of thing.

[Q] Market downloads: where are the files?

I was just wondering... when you download an app from the market, the apk file is clearly saved somewhere... but where? I mean, sometimes the download is successful, but the installation fails. instead of downloading the file again, I'd like to launch the downloaded apk and re-install directly. Anybody has a clue?
/system/data
EDIT: Oh, nevermind, I didn't realize you meant when the install fails.
If not on root/data/app than try root/mnt/asec/ and they have many folders wich have inner files that name "pkg.apk" but apk icon say about that file was installed...You can copy in external drive and change on original name.
Regards

/cache
The size of this partition may be the root of your install failed problems. When I first flash JVR, I hit the marked like a madman and just hit download on all the apps I regularly downloaded. The /cache partition quickly filled up and half of my installs failed. To make matters worse, the half downloaded files stayed in /cache and I had to manually remove them to regain the space (although I assume they would have been cleaned up next boot).
If the app installs successfully the apk is deleted from /cache and you can then find it in the locations mentioned by miro666.
