Hi community,
My current phone is slowly dying, so I have been researching actual 2018 phones. Since I like the idea of using dual-sim-cards (private & business), a lot of phones out there had to go by the board and only a few remained. I have always been a HTC fanboy, but I'm open for new things, so the P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro have caught my eye.
After reading through countless comparison reviews and articles, I understood that the Mate 20 Pro was the slightly better of the two and I really was all stoked to buy it when suddenly I stumbled across that display 'Gluegate' problem that has befallen most phones that are currently circulating on the market.
Since I really do not like the idea of paying 1000€ only to get a phone that I can sign up for repair immediately after, I've become hesitant about buying it now. The more I keep reading on here or similar blogs, the longer the list of negative aspects about the Mate 20 Pro seems to get.
I could look at a demo in a local store nearby and while it is really big compared to my actual HTC M9, that's something I could probably get used to. However, I found that notch super annoying. You may be able to disable it in the settings, but that still doesn't give you more space for icons in the tray. It seems as if only 3 or 4 icons fit in the tray above because that stupid notch is physically blocking the space. Will I still receive notifications from apps whose icon won't fit in the tray because it's full due to the notch?
In terms of camera quality: is the Mate 20 Pro significantly better/suprerior to the P20 Pro? I could get the P20 Pro for nearly hafl the price now and at the moment I'm totally not sure if I'm ready to pay 1000 bucks for the Mate 20 Pro with a faulty display, a way too small tray bar and with people complaining about pre-developed UI like EMUI and supposedly mediocre camera quality...
Can anyone relate to this? If you were me and about to get a new phone, would you get the Mate 20 Pro?

Which part do you need ?
Photo ? Please choose p20pro because Huawei don't tell us mate20pro oxdmark point.
Battery life? P20pro or m20pro is same.
Price. Oneplus 6 or oneplus 6t.
I will choose p20pro.

Nope, P20 Pro has a smaller battery, the battery life is not the same on both.
Ignore the DXOMark, that has long since been a useless and irrelevant benchmark for imaging.

M20pro screen fingerprints and 3d consume a lot of power, if you turn off fingerprint recognition, there will be more power. The mate 20 pro plan to uses 5000. Because it can't support 40 watts to change 4200.
I have the p20pro.
Great phone as I'm sure the mate is too. Both crippled by the worst possible development and bootloader lock down I've ever seen.
Anyone who knew about the p20pro shambles who goes ahead and buys a mate pro should expect a locked down system and no development at all.
Bare in mind that the p20pro barely had a functional twrp and little to no sign of pie recovery or root method in sight, meaning stick with Oreo and have root or have pie and nothing, if you have the mate then you are out of luck.
Nor a good time for Android / modding at all..
Avoid both and buy the McLaren 6T.
Had the same dilemma a few weeks back. Mate 20 Pro or P20 Pro to replace my previous Mate 10. Ended up with the Mate 20 Pro and trust me when I tell you that the Mate 20 Pro's Kirin 980 is so much faster than the P20 Pro's Kirin 970 which is the same SOC of the Mate 10. Mate 20 Pro is a true beast and camera is outstanding while battery life is great even better than the Mate 10.
Get a P20P. I owned both, "upgraded" to the Mate when it came out in Singapore. I regret that decision. The Mate is a nice piece of hardware, but I ultimately feel it wasn't worth the price and a downgrade from the P20P.
Why P20P?
Camera. The Mate one is SLOOOOW and often doesn't even take a picture when I press the button - I assume it's stuck in some autofocus or what. Snapshots are a pain in the ass.
Unlock: Both the in-display fingerprint sensor and the face unlock on the Mate are not perfect, which means that you're inevitably have to retry sometimes. That gets old fast. Plus, if you're using apps that can be unlocked with a fingerprint (say, email clients, banking apps) then you're in for a bad time..
Notch: Basically... forget about seeing any notification, ever. You won't. The tiny usable part of the status bar is filled with icons you can't remove.
What does the Mate have to offer? "Newer"? Battery? Gimmicks like 'reverse wireless charging'? It arguably looks nicer. That's .. about it.

Not for me. Came from the Mate 10 then to the Mate 20 Pro and cam is faster to focus and load with the Mate 20 Pro. Mate 10 and P20 Pro uses the same ISP from the same SOC.

Face unlock for me is great and faster than the face unlock feature of the Mate 10 which uses the same tech as the P20 Pro. I can unlock the phone using 3D Face Unlock even at low light something which I can barely do on the Mate 10 at dim lighting conditions.

Kirin 980 on the Mate 20 Pro is no joke coming from the Kirin 970 of the Mate 10. Everything else is faster, smoother and its like you can do any task a lot faster than on any Android smartphone as of this time.

The McLaren 6T, which is the most bizarre marketing push in history? Why would you want to have some sort of tie in with a company who is primarily known for failure over the last few years? But that is irrelevant - at the end of the day, rooting is a niche activity. Sure, some people make use of it, but most of the users really don't care that much.

The design of the phone is superb.
Warp charge is amazing.
I like the orange it's brilliant.
Mclaren make the best cars in the world in my opinion and many others.
It's half the price of a competing phone, ie: S10 / Phone XS
At this point in time it is the best phone there is, for development, for speed, for charging, for design, for many things.
Not to mention 10GB of RAM.
Comparing the Pro or the Mate to any Oneplus phone is futile, owners of either phone are going to give delusional comments about the opposite phone.
Personally as a user of XDA and a long time ROM flasher since the G1 days, i honestly couldn't have a phone without root and without removing the shackles which essentially turns it into a cheap iPhone clone.
That's my opinion, which the OP had asked for.

I disagree with all of this. You must have a faulty mate device.
The face unlock and fingerprint unlock on mine work 100% of the time, without fail. You have to enrol them properly and with the fingerprint, press hard on the screen.
As for photos, mine takes the shot immediately with every click, zero shutter lag, every single time UNLESS its night and you have AI on as it likes to sharpen the photo after you take it. Mostly this is just processing. Press the shutter 3 4 5 times and every photo, once processed, is available blur free.
I see notifications, all you have to do is make the battery percentage inside the icon, and turn off the network name. It's not hard to work this stuff out if you know anything about phones.
As for the P20 pro... it's slow, laggy, takes worse photos, screen wakes super slowly in sun due to some auto brightness issue, battery life is sub par, it doesn't fill the screen properly in apps like instagram.. less water resistant. Only thing the P20 pro does better is the speakers. No 4k stabilisation, awful video quality overall. Terrible graphics chip.
Mate 20 Pro all the way. Even with nonsense misinformation spread around.

First, (fan)boy are you triggered much..
Second, my experience stands and foam around your mouth doesn't change that. It's also a subjective thing, so "correcting" my recommendation is silly. The OP wants opinions, mine isn't worse than yours.
Third, I know a thing or two about phones. Nice slight, nice try.
Fourth.. see attachment. There's space for exactly one icon, whether you like it or not, "expert" phone tips not relevant.
I recommend the P20P.
P20 pro takes worse photos my A$$!!
The monochrome sensor still superior when it comes to photos specially in the dark environment and details in general, even the paid YouTube reviewers to braise the wide angel lense can't deny that
as for video recording both are considered the worst with the rest of Kirin powered phones. but the mate 20 pro can take stabilized bad videos in 4k.
Day to day use application both are fast specially the mate 20 with zero to small difference in speed, but games both struggle specially in future fight and PUBG.
P20 pro battery is actually lasting longer than mate 20 pro unless u switch the face recognition and in display fingerprint off, then they are similar so what's the point of them?
No gluegate stupid issue with p20 pro and half the price.
I actually had p20 pro, sold for a note 9 last August got the mate 20 pro as a second phone then back to p20 pro which I consider upgrade from the mate 20
As much as I love this phone, I hate it just as much. Do yourself a favour and get something with a Snapdragon processor and something that can be bootloader unlocked. Pixel or a One Plus. Even consider the Xiaomi if it's price you're after.

I highly doubt this. Using the Mate 20 Pro as the same resolution with the P20 Pro's FHD+ will definitely result into better battery life in favor of the Mate 20 Pro.

Fyi, not all units are affected so please do not generalize. Half the price where is that mate? In my area there is a USD 200 price difference and even 2nd hand units of the P20 Pro won't be half the value of the Mate 20 Pro.

Sorry mate but that is a downgrade to the max. Slower processor, lower resolution, slower charging, etc. Don't get me wrong, the P20 Pro is a great device but its about 8 months old in the market already. No need to disrespect and bash Mate 20 Pro users if you don't like it please. Thanks!

Yea I'm not buying that.
The McLaren is a beast of a device. Comparing it to any phone, not just a Huawei.
More to the point.
Why on earth would anyone support that regime??
They have absolutely gone against android in every way, not only that but every single developer will avoid them like the plague.
You want to buy into that?? Be my guest, you'll be one of few.
Enjoy ads, bloat, no ROMs, no mods, no bootloader unlocking, no root, no magisk mods, no AOSP, no kernels.
The pro has some but once pie becomes mainstream, root and twrp are out.

Totally agree, I came to XDA because most people here did.
But less and less are. Plus the OEMs are making it harder.

My wife and some friends have stock and they get by so they're functional. But there are too many benefits to ignore root
FYI, you can also hide icons on the status bar by using 3rd app such as SystemUItuner. You can make 2 empty slots at least. That's enough for me.
I hate this type of question, 1 or 2? Most of the people asking neither buy the products they ask for others opinion.. Lol

Thanks.
They don't.
Not sure if it's working as intended as the option for disabling motion video when sharing is active in Google Photos app.

You'll struggle to get the p20 pro to look like the pixel 2 - Huawei have stopped providing bootloader unlock codes, so you won't be able to flash anything. No ASOP, and very little ROM development on this phone.
I love mine, but I managed to get it before they changed the policy. No way I'd buy one now.

If you have an iPhone as a daily driver the p20 might actually work out better as its ui is an ios wannabe. Unless you actually like the vanilla experience of the pixel.

I bought mine on Saturday. I came back to android after one year adventure with iOS. I must say I truly recommend this device if you can live without root and custom development.
No bootloader unlock option sucks indeed. However hardwarewise this device is top notch (well I wish it had s845 instead but Kirin 970 definitely gets the job done unless you're heavy gamer). Even though You cannot root it You can pretty easily uninstall large portion of huawei or google bloatware using adb. I must admit huawei apps are horribly optimized, scrolling is choppy. Luckily you can replace them with your favorite ones from play store. I've just managed to make my p20 pro look (almost) like pixel 2xl. I replaced huawei launcher with Nova, stock calender with google calender, swiftkey with gboard etc. My device feels lightweight and snappy.
I recommend this tutorial:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/help/tutorial-how-to-remove-uninstall-bloat-t3766960
I've also thought about getting pixel 3xl or 1+ 6T but i didn't wat to wait another two months. (Oneplus 6 was no option for me. Imo it's the best but still just a midranger with killer cpu/gpu/ram/storage). Another factor is price. In my region newly released pixel is almost as overpriced as iphone flagship. By purchasing P20 pro you get top quality (battery time is just insane, yesterday i reached 7 hours sot and I had still 30% battery left) for reasonable price.

I wouldn't bother with the Pixel. I have had many Nexus and Pixel devices. I am incredibly satisfied with this phone. Great cameras like Pixel, better zoom and low light performance, better HDR, better battery life, better design by a big margin, fastest fingerprint scanner and face unlock on any phone, IP reading like Pixel, smaller size but bigger display, desktop mode is awesome and unique to this device, infra red remote, dual SIM functionality, faster charging than Pixel, very good dual speakers, really bright display for sunlight visibility, large storage capacity and ram, the list goes on.
So what are the weaknesses? Well warranty support for Pixel in the UK is incredible. No other phone comes close, not even Apple. Then there's unlimited photo video upload. Then there's new Android Pie. But that's it. The Huawei is as smooth and fast as my OG Pixel so that's fast enough for me. Better than a Samsung for sure.
Hey, apologies if this is too long of a post. Was hoping to share my recent experiences.
Background: Was on contract with a carrier using the XS Max. Needed to switch carriers, so sold iPhone to cover the contract balance. Switched carrier and got the Mate 20 Pro. After a week returned the Mate 20 and got a Note 9. And now I'm here I guess posting with the Note 9.
Mate 20 Pro: I ended up returning it because my top half of the screen had a red tint to it and the center part of the display had greenish colour to it. For the record, I've owned a Mate 8 in the past. To my surprise, when I started using the Mate 20 Pro I could immediately tell that (a) it's a beautiful and fast device, and (b) that EMUI haven't changed one bit... Whether it's android 7, 8, or 9 -- frustration levels remain high. I hope no one gets me wrong, I love Huawei. Kinda always did. I love the fact that they copy everything they can from Apple and other manufacturers. That's a good thing because it means its users can enjoy awesome features like 3D face unlock (which worked great for me! I think they implemented it really well) or no headphone jack (I'm joking), or even new features like in display finger print scanner or having the Google now integrated to the launcher, or what about the small zoomed in screen when you're moving the typing cursor? Nice touch! But the truth is, you're gonna be googling for hours trying to understand why you can't receive notifications or so many other things that are unique to EMUI. Even me being a user that is already very familiar with EMUI, I still couldn't figure out why I'm not receiving notifications until I wake up the screen in the morning, or why I can't set a live lockscreen wallpaper, or why am I getting punished for switching to Nova Launcher? Or why can't my DPI settings apply to the notification shade. No kidding the battery is awesome, nothing is allowed to run in the background and gets closed after you open a few apps. Also, the device is not as smooth as people make it seem. You do notice lag, and sometimes in places you wouldn't expect. For example, when YouTube plays as PIP, there's no way you're not gonna notice lag everywhere. Did that make me return the phone? No. But the screen issue did. And while returning, I decided to give the Note 9 a chance.
Note 9: Overall, the Note 9 has a better screen, slightly worse cameras, worse facial recognition, no notch! Worse one handed usability, slightly worse battery, much better speakers, a headphone jack! Comes with headphones you'll actually try to use, has a s-pen (not useful for me), AOD that is actually useful, and a better software experience. Do I hate Bixby? Yes. Am I able to remove Bixby and use nova launcher with zero problems? Yes. The battery probably gives me an hour less screen on time. But remember, this is with all my regular apps refreshing in the background and multitasking that keeps much more apps ready to go in the background. The screen is also noticibly better with better viewing angles and better implementation of how the rounded corners look. This phone actually seem to perform better as well. I don't care about Android versions or what nanometer is the processor... All I care about is my experience using the phone. And with the Note 9 it's simpler and smoother. Here for example, the phone doesn't lag when YouTube is in PIP mode or lags less when I'm double pressing the multitasking button (quick app switching). Having no notch allows me to see all my notification icons in the status bar, which is awesome. In terms of user and multimedia experience, this device delivers.
Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind in the future. As it stands now, the thought of returning this device and getting another Mate 20 Pro (potentially with a better screen) haven't crossed my mind...
Returning this device and getting another Huawei.
Samsung Note9 is not for you.
Was in the same boat had both, if I could just keep the facial unlock and cameras from the 20
both iris scanner and face unlock are obsolete coming of congress in Barcelona in 3 weeks, all flagships will greet us with punch hole cameras and in display scanners , same for P30 series on 31st march, with trend to get rid of that front facing camera gimmicks at the end of 2019. As for Note 9 vs Mate 20 pro there's absolutely no contest here to speak of, every professional reviewer concluded that current quad bayer sensors are lackluster compared to 12mp offerings which was to be expected.. hype train is pretty much the only thing Huawei has, and it lost momentum with poor processing and worst software experience on android
Hello, i also had the Mate 20 Pro since day one, and i had the famous LG screen problem , i had to return it and get another one, but after few weeks i couldn't stand the screen that is sooo edged, it was annoying to me, also the weird screen size, it looked so long and not even while watching videos, after all i had to return it and get the Note9 and i never looked back, i found Note9 screen to be a lot better, Always on display with full features is awesome unlike the Basic AOD on the Mate 20 Pro, and the One UI/ Android 9 update made the Note 9 even better.
Cheers
hey guys, mate is still best! What do you think???
https://youtu.be/6EHQvYTKSWo
i picked mate 20 pro because the the camera punch hole in the s10 would drive me completely insane, worst design i've ever seen on a phone i think
mate 20 here would trade if i could
s10+ becausemy opinion only)
its newer
best battery :less capacity but better performance
best sound: louder and clearer
best screen : its a samsung nothing can beat this guys
camera photo same results dxomarks but its release firmware so it will get even better
best selfie by far
best video by far: we all know mate 20 pro is very bad
best 4k and 4k60fps: jelly efect on mate. cant deal with 4k60fps
best slow mo not fake 960. mate 20 pro was a interpollated 240 fps to seem it is making 960 fps
i have a mate 20 pro because what i said was kinda valid instead of note 9 some months ago.
mate 30 or even p30 pro i think will beat s10+
this is a 3 months king phone period so what you choose today in months it will be old news.
Yeah, the s10+ on paper is better than mate 20 pro.
Better screen, a faster chip, louder speakers, better camera software ( imo mate 20 raw camera performance is better),...
But in day to day use there will not be any huge differences except the punch hole display vs notch. With that said most of the games or apps I use even with the hole punch u will have black bars on the side, hell even youtube app has those unless u are willing to zoom in and cut part of the video (I hate all those reviews on youtube that zoom in the content just for the sake of having it fullscreen while in reality u will have to deal with blackbars if u dont want to cut off the top and bottom).
One thing I absolutely love it about the mate 20 pro but others seems to sleep on is the charging speed. I usually fall as sleep while watching random stuffs on my phone at night. And this is when super charge come in to save my ass. It charges a whooping 70% after my brushing, showering and shaving routine in the next morning. Im doubted the s10+ or even future note 10 could do the same. For me thats a game changer, now I can freely enjoy my sleep without waking up in the middle of the night remembering havent charge the phone yet.
I have the S10 plus arriving this week.
Ultimately it will be nice to have a proper functional always on display again, the lack of this on the Mate 20 pro has become something that bugs me every day and if Huawei added a proper AOD I'd probably cancel my S10 pre-order. It will also be nice have the volume sync properly on my bluetooth headphones.
Is a shame as the Mate 20 pro gets so much right.

wow, orders a new phone just because of AOD? do you have to much money or sever OCD ither way hope u like your new s10+
yes i'm jelly
I will obviously be selling the Mate if I keep the S10+ I'm not made of money!
AOD is a feature that I value, hoped I'd get used to it on the M20 pro maybe if the LED was not so small I would have but ultimately it just continues to bug me.
Overall I think the S10+ is the better phone except for not having proper face unlock.
Huawei really do need to up their AOD game but can't see it happening.
I don't think the hole punch design would bother me. I've never been bothered by notches (I had an iPhone X before the M20pro.)
Still, I can't upgrade until November so will see what the Mate 30 Pro has to offer.
3D face unlock is a gimmick of the past, from now on manufacturers will rely on Under display sensors and maximizing screen to body ratio in the coming years, Samsung is light years ahead in terms of UX and unmatched audio/video quality for android device, although they slack with implementing new camera tech, it's a choice
i just got the mate 20 pro with my carrier . To get the s10 would of costed me 500$ extra so for me it was an easy decision to get the mate 20 pro.

2 things that are prolly the weakest points on this phone. However I have decided to keep the mate 20 pro (for now though I'm very tempted) and not get the s10 plus. For me the best feature of the mate is the super charge vs the slow ass charge on the s10. Like another poster above mentioned, I have not micro managed this phone charge wise ever since I got it. I used to charge all my Samsungs every night to 100 but on this phone I never do!
Also, I love the fact that EMUI desktop can be done wirelessly unlike the s10 plus Dex. There's just too many things that I really love about the mate. I have been on ever Galaxy s and note device ever been out. I just came from the note 9 , which is collecting dust, to the mate 20 pro and I really really love this phone. From the way it feels in the hand (it's still slimmer by about 2mm compared to the s10 plus, to the way it looks. I think it's very unique looking and much better than the generic looking s10. Also the mate is a beast and I still think that EMUI (no matter how much people hate it) is a far more optimized and efficient software than Samsung's. I'm running Nova launcher and I have it set just the way I like it, so EMUI doesn't give me anything negative, only the positive such as awesome battery management, supeer fast and responsive interact interface, etc...
What are others folks thoughts on this??

I am on the fence re S10 vs the plus. The normal 10 looks a great size and is slightly smaller than the mate too. I too had the Note, it was a beast but I managed it, it was also easier in the hand vs say the Xs max, I have also had the S9 plus. There is something about the normal S10 or Mate though that falls into that goldilocks zone size wise. I think the bigger phones are nice with the larger screen but even if you ignore the one-handed use thing they are also more of a burden to carry around at times.
I'm concerned re the camera and expect the mate to have the better shooter. The battery management on the Mate will also be better I think even if it does come with the downside of it sometimes shutting down apps that you do not want it too.
I'm currently in the same boat to renew my contract with my service provider and really struggle with the decision which phone to pick...
IMHO the Mate 20 Pro is still the best phone out there, but Huawei's and FunkyHuawei's recent stupidities are both not making this decision very easy.
I currently own a Sony and was always happy with it and their software / firmware update policy and speed, except for the bootloader unlock, which wipes a DRM key and breaks some phone capabilities, which can't be restored anymore. For older phones it's still possible to circumvent that, but forget it on newer phones. That drived me away from Sony and although I really love the Mate 20 Pro's specs and internals... I think I would have a very hard time without an unlocked bootloader. F***, why are companies so stupid?!
That said... and although I'm not a Samsung fanboy... I'm that close to just turn around from this phone and choose an S10 model or pick an LG instead. Also for a higher price... Currently I'm just desperately waiting if anybody provides a bootloader unlock service for Huawei and that recent dark chapter for this brand becomes again less relevant.
My 5 cents...
As far as I see it, Samsung is the Apple of Android so won't touch them. Never been one to go for the companies with the biggest advertising budgets mainly HTC's and Sony's perviously and now on the Mate 20 Pro and so far it's been exactly what I thought it would be. Some reviewers go on about how bad the EMUI skin is, can't say I'm too bothered, if I have to tap the screen once more than a Samsung device to get to a particular setting (you know one that's "buried deep down" in the system) then I'm sure I'll live. The S10+ is basically a Mate 20 pro with newer internals that give marginally better performance levels, in the real world there's no difference - you might lose 0.01 of a second opening an app - if that's too long to wait you might have to re-evaluate where you are right now Both phones will still be holding their own in two years time and with the Mate's price dropping steadily you could pick one up for £200 less than the S10+, is there that much of a difference between the two? No, paying £200 more for a name is the preserve of the rich or daft, and I'm neither of those

I could not agree more to the statements. Same as you I have also always chosen the underdogs (loved my HTC Desire HD by the way), but when you seriously start to think who actually are the current bad guys, I would not name Samsung first. IMHO companies should ship their phones with an unlocked bootloader and not penalize the users for unlocking their phones (Sony) or not allow them to do so (Huawei). If it would be still possible to get the unlock codes I wouldn't even think twice which phone to pick. Sadly as things stand I have to confess to consider buying my first Samsung phone. LG would also be an option, but the problem on the latter is as well, that they simply don't allow to unlock every of their phones... Crap...
The lack of proper face unlock on the S10 might be a deal breaker. It's now been proved to be really insecure. The face unlock on the Mate is amazing.
Apart from that, the phones are really similar.

Love my mate 20 pro, I was fortunate I didn't have the green screen problem! I do like switching phones but brought it outright and just on a monthly sim only contract for £10 a month.
As others have said, I used to charge my old Samsung's to 100% every night, I top mine up and normally keep mine between 25-85% doesn't really matter where as I have the 40w charger at work and home and can get that 50% in about 20 mins.
Love the phone wide angle & telephoto cameras, the reviews are raving about these on the s10plus but seem to forget these were already available for years on the LG G series and the mate 20 pro since Sept last year. I know there is a slightly wider FOV on the S10plus.
Going to keep going with the mate 20 pro battery has not seen any performance degrade over the 6 months I've had it too which is great, with Nova launcher I don't use the EMUI.
I choose s10+.
because finger reader better other phone. But I like face Id in iphone. Mate 20 pro face id is a joke.
And green screen problem, I skip mate 20 pro.

Did Huawei already kinda give up on the P20 Pro? I know that there's is coming the EMUI 10, but new features? or features that other phones are getting? The Mate 20 has announced some new stuff like moon mode, DC dimming, ultra-low latency Bluetooth (maybe here there is a hardware difference), the Nova 4 is also getting front camera night mode. Also the camera on the P20 Pro still as a lot to improve especially on the video and front camera. I just kinda feel like they already letting go a last year flagship just like that.
Low latency bluetooth might be because of the bluetooth 5 thing. Guess who's switching if they abandon the phone in the same way they did 2 years ago.
Is a shame that an 800+€ flagship is just kinda 'forgot' already just like that because there are others flagship to push out to consumers, this phone is great and still can be better but yeah f**k consumers.
We get every update possible up to emui 10. Who is forgotten??

Some of the features that the mate 20 and p30 have are mostly hardware-related. The 30x zoom could had been bought to our phone, same goes for dimming, ar lens and more stuff.

This.. Also when is Huawei gonna finally solve the video focus jitters or whatever is?
Hate to be devils advocate here but if they put all there shiney new tricks on last year's phone what would be the point in the p30, it's a business decision.
Sicks but it's how phones are sold, I think given the p20 is nearly 2 now it's doing well with updates.

Something that almost never happens in real life.
The successful company must really fail on many fronts to make majority of their customers go. It must be combination of really disappointing product and terrible financial condition of this company. The closest example that comes to my mind is htc drastically losing its market share in 2011. Their models like Sensation or Incredible S had hardware defects and weren't match for Galaxy S II.
However an average user won't abandon Huawei because they don't want to make its really good p20 pro look (softwarewise) like p30 pro. Every vendor does that.

I don't wanna my P20 Pro to look like the p30 pro or all the shiny new stuff that is hardware related (impossible of course) but it would be cool to have a last year flagship to record a video without is "focus jumping around" every few seconds and stuff like that that ruin the video and can be improved.
Does feel like we're being left behind tbh.
Emui 10 has been mentioned but no time line specifically. Video stabilization has actually got worse on 9.1 Vs 8.1 on 1080p 30fps
Battery had got worse too.

Battery performance decreases over time. It's normal for this type batteries. I don't see much difference between 8.1 and 9.1.

Were you used to getting 9-10 hours SOT consistently on your P20 Pro on 8.1? And you're still getting that on 9.1 ?

I was getting 7-9 hours SOT on 8.1 and now I am easiliy getting more than 7.
In order to determine whether it's normal battery degradation (just an example: my old iphone's battery lost 8% of its capacity over a year) or result of update to 9.1 I would have to downgrade to 8.1 and test which I am not really willing to do.

I know personally that the phone is less efficient with 9.1, it is what it is.

I got my Mclaren 7t Pro almost 3 years ago. Battery life isn't what it used to be, but otherwise it's been a really good workhorse for me.
Been eyeing the new round of phones and nothing seems to really jump out at me. I looked at the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but that thing is huge. All of the demo Pixel 6 Pro's I tried had various problems and the 10t just... doesn't seem much of an upgrade on paper to my 7t Pro.
with the 10t, I'd be losing 4gb of RAM and getting a better camera and better screen. Processing seems roughly the same, although a new Snapdragon might be quicker than my older.
Any thoughts? is it worth upgrading or wait and push off for the 12gb RAM model?
I came from the oneplus 8 pro (which also had 12gb ram). The oneplus 10 pro isnt an upgrade, its the same phone.
Feels like it anyways.. I'd have stayed with the oneplus 8 pro except my screen was completely destroyed and so was the camera from a far drop.
It depends what you want from a phone I guess.
Coming from the 8 pro, there's a lot of comparable parts, for example the screen, the audio, even the cameras to some degree.
But there are some huge improvements.
The cameras: for example in videos, the stabilisation is phenomenal, and zooming it's more akin to a TV camera, the fluidity and smoothness is definitely something new, it's a joy to use. Tbh as are the cameras, no macro though which sucks but that's life.
Charging: this is something to behold, you can literally see the percentage increase, half an hour and you're at 100%, it's insanely fast.
SOC: performance is a massive bump over the 8 pro so will be even bigger over the 7 series, PlayStation 2 games run at a full 60fps which is staggering really.
Battery: 5000Mah my first couple of charges 11 hours and 10 hours SOT, amazing tbh.
Software: very mixed bag android 12, there are things to like but for me I need a custom ROM which are being worked on as we speak.
Looks:. Great looking, non fingerprint shiny surface, looks brilliant, nice and heavy too. Feels high quality.
Overall comparing to my last phone. The 8 pro, you need to understand that the 8 pro was a stellar phone. It stood out amongst the other 8 series devices. Was the best of the bunch but honestly besides the lack of a macro camera, I can safely say every department has improved.
With that in mind would it be an upgrade over the McLaren 7? Yes I think it would be. Performance, battery, looks and features.
Is it going to reinvent the wheel? No but Moore's law is dead on phones, you aren't getting twice as much any more, but to say it's not a worthy upgrade if you're due for one and have any other OnePlus phone would be untrue, even people with the 9 or 9 pro would be missing features that are only present on the 10 pro.
That's my opinion anyway.

I wish I could agree, but I'm just speaking from an average consumer. You are definitely a Power user
This phone seems just as smooth. The camera is currently worse (Just because I was running a gcam port. But that will definitely be fixed once I have time to find a good gcam port!
I guess I should rephrase what I had said. If you aren't looking to game and you're just an average user, you'll notice no difference. They lowered the ram for US model(for whatever reason, I was kind kind of upset about that too)
One DOWNFALL is definitely the lack of MEMC. That 120hz upscaling was HUGE for me. Especially when it was the only reason I would have considered staying on OOS.

I'm sure there will be more versions soon, bit of a slow burner compared to the 8 series, but it'll come good I reckon.
No ROM as yet. OnePlus hasn't released correct driver's or something so they're working in the device tree.
I don't pretend to understand it all but it's in the post I reckon... For me Evo X was the best ROM on the 8 and probably for all the devices I've had so if it's anything like that I'm sure we'll be happy
thanks for the conversation everyone. I decided to take the plunge, ordered it through Best buy for the $100 giftcard.

You're a little late to get the buds for free, the promotion ended on the 12th April... But having used them now for a little while I can wholeheartedly recommend them, I honestly can't fault them, the noise cancellation is actually quite spooky, I'm not an audiophile so I may be just witnessing this for the first time myself but it's quite amazing IMHO.
The 8GB version I have myself, your battery will thank you for this and if you do end up rooting and get a custom ROM on there you can use a pixel type ROM which will enable unlimited back up of photos so the 128GB storage won't be an issue.
Cases I've not tried but you've got one in the box that I'm using myself, nice and slim and the phone comes with a screen protector already fitted which works as expected. Plus you've got victus gorilla glass on there.
I'd I wanted strength for drops then a ringke would do the job and still look cool or a UAG if they release one. For aesthetics I'd say the sandstone would look good.

Here's some info:
(Q) is there a way to make photos think your phones a pixel whilst remaining on OOS?
Title says it all really. Some AOSP ROMs make photos think that the phones actually a pixel and so back up is unlimited. I think that should be standard anyway. Google makes a tonne of money as it is. I do have a pixel but wondered what's...

I'm in the UK mate...
Oh wow you didn't get one??
Here's mine.
Bit crap you didn't get one mate..I hear the charger over there is slower too. Is that to do with that voltage output of your grid? Think yours is 110v and ours is 240v or vice versa, no idea...just trying to put reason to it.
Or is this a Chinese company being mean to the yanks?
Either way. So long as the phone is the same you're golden.
Did you at least claim your free buds??
They are superb mate and for free.
Offer expired 12th April

No i had no idea that was a thing either! However, I dont think I would have qualified anyway. I purchased on the 12th and took delivery on the release date (14 apr).
That case actually looks better than the one I had to buy. All other oneplus's I've bought had cases, I think they're just mad at us Americans LOL The slower charging is whatever. It would be cool to have it but the tests I've seen only show a couple minute difference for both phones to be fully charged.
