I was prompted today to install the new Magisk Manager (version 6.1.0 (165)). I installed and it all went ok.
Then I was prompted to install the new version v18.0. Which I flashed via TWRP. That gave me a bootloop. Had to downgrade to v17.1 to bring the phone back to life.
Anyone experienced the same problem?
I am waiting for v18.1 as this one clearly doesn't work.

Instructions
If you already have Magisk installed, it is strongly recommended to upgrade directly via Magisk Manager
Instructions for installing the first time are presented below:

I have the latest hydrogen OS and unlocked bootloader , and i want to root my phone but i just wants to know if theres any other files I need to flash other than magisk.zip
Nope, just flash the latest magisk zip and it's done. But yes, you also have to install the Magisk Manager when you boot up after flashing the zip.
I installed the latest one that came out today and my phone took a crap! Phone became very laggy and would freeze and sometimes not even detect root. I had to restore my phone back to last weeks version.

Hm... Absolutely no issues on my OP3T, OOS 4.1.6 and Franco Kernel r25 with Magisk v13.1. Maybe you have a module causing issues (long shot, I know)?
No issues here with Open Beta 10, Stock Kernel, Magisk 13.1 and Manager 5.0.4.
Root is working, passes SafetyNet with all modules activated and properly hide root from my Banking App. All good!

Just Simple flash the Magisk v13.1 and install the latest magisk manager v5.0.4.
I feel you should flash magisk immediately, while flashing the ROM through custom recovery. Install magisk manager after first boot.
You can do a dirty flash without formatting anything to get rooted.

Hi,
I had no problem until magisk v12, but i recently tried v13.1 and v13.2 and both failed during upgrade through magisk manager 5.0.4 and 5.0.5.
I also tried to install it directly from twrp 3.1.0.0. The install finished in a good way but when i reeboot i can check that magisk is not installed anymore.
I am running marshmallow on an alcatel idol 3.
By the way my sd storage is adoptable but i did have problem until v12.
Thanks for your help.
For me, 13.1 and everything before installed fine but 13.2 will not, I always get "installation error". I manually updated the manager, but it does not help.
Hi, same problem here, i can't update magisk, it says installation error.
How to solve that ?
I use rooted nougat on s7 edge
Anyone with this issue should post a recovery log from flashing the zip in recovery. In TWRP, go to Advanced - Copy log.
Same here ... no update possible 12-> 13.3
hello guys, hope you can help me here.
so as per title say, i got error when installing magisk manager 5.6.4, app not installed.
have try with older version but got same problem.
before this, i tried to upgrade system from nougat to oreo. successful with flashable roms.
at nougat, i got magisk manager, but couple steps to upgrade they recommended to remove magisk, so i use magisk uninstaller. and magisk gone for good.
after booting to oreo, i want to recover root, but cant even install magisk manager apk.
try to flash magisk 16.0, success with no problem.
now im very confuse. need help.
EDIT 1: and for some reason i cant install OTA. is this related?
Unfortunately I ran into the same problem. I tried installing Magisk Manager (5.6.3 and 5.6.4) on a stock, clean Nexus 6P but received that same error when running the app. I originally used ADB to install it and when that didn't produce the expected result I just used ADB to push the file to the device and then installed it manually. Neither method resulted in Magisk Manager running so I ended up having to install TWRP (which is what I was trying to avoid) and then flash the Magisk zip file. After that Magisk Manager ran successfully.
Too bad the documentation makes assumptions about everyone automatically understanding what is meant by 'install Magisk Manager'.

First of all, I have very limited android experience but I need too root my phone for the functionality of an app that's critical to my business. Anyways, I'm running a Moto x4 with Pie. I already installed magisk 17.3 and magisk manager 6.0.1 using twrp recovery following a tutorial on youtube. When opening the magisk manager, it asked me to update to 7.1.1, which I did. Then it told me that I needed at least v18.0 magisk to be able to run the new magisk manager. Am I able to update magisk by flashing the new zip version in twrp, or is another method required since a prior version is already installed? Is this how I would install all future versions of magisk that comes out? Is there anything that I should know before flashing? I really don't want to get stuck in a boot loop or brick the phone.... Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

You can update it from Magisk and as well as from TWRP...

First of all: backup! Then you can bootloop, brick (or not!) with no worries. Do it with twrp.
Download latest (beta) Magisk 19.0, flash it under twrp and be happy.
Just to add to the above....
Since you're already rooted you don't have to flash the zip in TWRP. Just go to the Magisk Manager Modules section, click the "+"-button and select the Magisk zip. When it's done, reboot and you're updated.

If it's in the manager app, I'm not sure how to do it because it says that I can't open it with anything <v18.0.

You could of course uninstall the incompatible Manager and reinstall the one that works with your Magisk version.
But, that's now besides the point.
A day when you learn something new is a good day. :good:
If you want to learn more, here's a trivia [emoji14]
Also install "Magisk Manager for Recovery Mode (mm)" module. Not promoting it, but I myself feel it's a good module that you need to have before playing with Magisk Modules
It allows you to manage Magisk Modules from TWRP itself. So next time you run into a bootloop, you know what to do

Hello
Recently i changed stock ROM on my HTC 10 Evo to debloated ROM with Magisk pre-installed
https://forum.xda-developers.com/bolt/development/rom-stock-ish-7-0-nougat-debloated-t3519195
Code:
Stock 7.0 Magisk Debloated/Deodexed + Mods
Whats Included:
Magisk Version 13.xx <- Passes Safety-net As of 8/19/17
Magisk Manager couldn't check updates or check safety net test so i decised to update it.
Downloader 7.3.1 Magisk Manager but couldn't update app so i uninstalled it and then tried to install the fresh one.
It ended up that the old one is gone and new downloaded app hangs while i try to i install it.
Could anyone tell me what to do?
Should i run uninstaller.zip in recovery and then install both Magisk and Magisk Manager?
I couldn't find updating guide for pre-installed Magisk anywhere...

Preinstallation doesn't change general rules. It's like the manual patching the bootloader so do exactely what you wrote. Uninstall it in custom recovery via uninstall.zip and then install any version of Magisk you want using the magisk.zip and manager.apk.

Thank you for help. Just wanted to make sure that I won't damage my rom. The uninstallation and then installation of newest Magisk went perfectly fine and the updated Magisk Manager were already in the drawer.
Internet connection in Magisk Manager is back and safety net test is passed.
