5G E for AT&T Is On The Way - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello Friends,
I noticed as I was driving thru the Washington DC area yesterday that my 4G LTE signal briefly changed to 5G E and initially I was baffled because I didn't think the service rolled out just yet. May be a testing tower but nonetheless it was cool to see the signal change on the status bar. Since I was driving at highway speeds, I didn't get a chance to test the data speed but the capability is obviously there for the Note 9. Anyone else experience this in their area/region yet? Just curious to see how widespread the testing is! https://www.fiercewireless.com/5g/at-t-to-begin-upgrading-existing-lte-phones-to-5g-e

Actually no Samsung has hardware for 5G connections. Maybe galaxy S10 will have a model for it.

Maybe the "E" is for electronic? Since all the rumors point at hardware exclusive capability! So, my guess is that 5G will roll out even to the S9, but it won't be as fast as the S10 since it's in the hardware. That's just an assumption, though. On a side note, I really hope that carriers dont increase their prices with it, because I'll just have to stay on my 4G. T-mobile is blazing fast regardless.

Agreed! But they did this crap with 4G LTE as well. When you get an HSPA+ connection it will show 4G (sans LTE) but HSPA+ is not really 4G. Debateable, I know.
AT&T Petitioned the governing body and was allowed to sell standard GSM HSPA+ as 4G.
Blah! They do this crap all the time. Nothing new.
Edit: Oh, they talk about the 4G / LTE thing in the article.

And that's why I left their garbage service. Been with T-mobile for the last 4 years and I've been very happy to be honest.

Same here, left at&t crap years ago. More than happy with T-Mobile!

At&t's 5G isn't actually 5G it's just branding for the non tech savvy folks. The same way 4G was actually 3.5G. Rule of thumb is, and that's an easy way to know if it's 5G. Run a speed test. If the speed is below 1Gbps it's not 5G. For example out here in Canada on LTE Advanced speeds are between 200 and 300 Mbps. That's NOT 5G.

Yeah, thats what we were all saying before you. The linnked article even discussed the 3.5G that you are talking about.
That really agitated me. When I built ROM's I would usually have an option for the 4G indicator style.

AT&T knows exactly what they're doing here. It's incredible shady business practice. I wish the FCC would step in and say knock it off.

I appreciate all of the info friends. This is good to know information. I just don't see the point in pushing this other than duping people into believing something that is not true. How does that help their bottom line? They even admitted that they are doing this with no regret. Unbelievable!

Looks like s. Jersey might be waiting for sprint LTE for a while

Better then Phoenix. They say its 9% complete and estimated completion is Q1 of 2014. GOOD thing is that they have applied for permits like crazy in the valley here and a couple sprint reps at different locations said they got "memos" saying it should be done around June, or atleast lit up then. Keep in mind Phoenix never got WiMax, they just dont like us here
I get like 2-15kB/s down and 10-25kB/s up with a 2500+ms ping all day till like 10pm when it starts getting faster and the ping drops. Pretty much makes the phone unusable during the day.

not without saying to much on your phoenix topic, but... There are NV towers done everywhere in phoenix as we speak, more then 9% believe it or not. theirs not a single lte signal at any of these locations because the backhaul isn't complete and hasn't been dated yet.. Soon as the backhaul is done the lte will come up fairly quickly.
Good example of deployment by area is portland, or/vancouver, wa market. Most of our locations will have LTE enabled due to having comcasts/century links fiber and internet runs to most of the locations in the areas, however in most of the rural areas this doesn't exist yet so they only have NV upgraded at this point (meaning its got LTE/800/CDMA upgraded just no backhaul to support its new system).
it is what it is, but the speeds are wonderful and worth it, trust me.. My tower by my work just went live 2 weeks ago, 1.2-1.5mbps on 3g, 10-35mbps on LTE.. Its beautiful.

I've been contemplating this as well. Considering the "28%" that's completed, and wherever it's available, it's spotty. It's gone just as soon as it connects. AT&T is pulling like 50mpbs down at my office, indoors. If I can get a steady LTE signal from Sprint, I might get 8-9mbps. I just can't see myself leaving my SERO plan right now. Especially with no other company offering unlimited data.
It just sucks I've been told back in 2010 with my evo that WiMAX was coming at the end of the 2010 summer and never got it. Now I feel like I'm getting the same song and dance. hope I'm wrong.

Well, the thing about WiMax is that it's intentions were to beat the rest of the providers to broadband-like internet on mobile devices. They did, but it was never really a long-term solution, and Sprint knew that. With LTE, they're still late to the game, but they're progressing. They should be progressing much faster, but they aren't.
first i work for a contractor who is responsible for this area ( one of the many ), we build mostly sprint sites, i mostly work out of new york, although i have had some news from my boss that jersey is the next spot with lots of jobs dont know if that bit of information helps but they are actually working on it...well having us work on it
All I know is, 4G LTE has been working in the bay area for a few months now, although it's still not officially available here according to Sprint. When I was down in Cupertino a few months ago, strong signal and I did a speed test and got great speeds. Now in my home (San Mateo) or in my office (SF), I'll see a weak 4G signal, but the speeds are god-awful. Even when I'm outside in the city and show full 4G, I'm lucky to see 2mbps download speeds via speed test. I hope it's all because they're still sorting out bugs here, because it's a huge disappointment right now.

Mine drops calls when held in a lot less than the death grip. Sprint signal has always been marginal in my area but with this phone I need to be extra aware of how I hold it. I thought it was supposed to switch to the upper antenna during a call but I'm not sure...

Have you had any reception issues, or are you just looking at some bars?
The phone switches antennas to the top one when the bottom one has poor reception. Yeah, I can make this happen too, but I haven't had a single dropped or difficult call, so I'm not sure what the complaint is.

Try switching to EVRC-B as mentioned in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292530
Your dropped calls may go away.
I had this problem in a big way, especially with losing Wi-Fi if I rested my index finger on the top-right corner. Seems to have gone away by putting the phone in a $5 clear TPU cover of eBay. Protects the phone, prevents death grip, doesn't hide the beautiful design....win/win
What is the death grip? Is that when you grab your phone like a retard? Okay I'll make sure not to grab my phone like a retard.

Knowing where the antennae are would do a great deal to avoid this problem. The top right corner is where the wifi radio is. Don't hold the phone there for better wifi reception.
There are two mobile network antennae on the phone. One runs along the bottom of the phone, while the other is from the top middle to top left. Both run all frequencies, and are on-the-fly interchangeable. Try not to cover both locations at the same time, and the phone will adjust to the proper antenna automatically.

Sure... Use Google. Apple can appeal the ruling and the white house has quite a bit of time to intervene, which I no doubt Obama will just as he has in the past. And what the hell does me posting something have to do with this? Lol... I was unaware that I shouldn't do that as I see people posting threads like that all the time... Either way it has nothing to do with the validity of what I said.

Quit arguing over irrelevant things.
Under what circumstances does one hold a phone in a "death grip?" I pretty much rest the phone on my pinky and lightly curve my fingers around the back. It's not safe, but it's what I'm used to. Maybe because my hands are smaller.
Wow, people are certainly defensive here, and don't want to admit their new phone has an issue. This is identical to the iPhone 4 death grip, which didn't always cause you to lose the signal completely, but drop it severely. It's not just the signal bars either, you can see the actual dBm reading is far worse while holding it.
Can you still make calls? Probably, but the majority of us use data these days. Comparing a 4 bar to 1 bar of Sprint 3G service makes a huge difference.
I have a Note 2, and I can tell you that no matter what way you hold it the signal strength doesn't vary by more than a couple dBm.
What are these bars of 3G you speak of? Bars and 3G dont belong in the same sentence unless you are using an iPhone.

So, the Dual-SIM HTC One is getting 4.2 right now...

It's not HTC. There are many parties involved when an update is released on a Carrier phone as opposed to a unbranded phone.

I appears that this update being pushed to the phones if China Telecom or some other Operators. The rough order is Google releases an update. OEMs get it working on theier hardware and add there stuff to it. Then the OEMs send it to unbranded phones and/or the Operators for them to put their stuff in it and test per thier networks. Then the Carriers push an update.
My guess here is that the Chinese Operators did not care to do much testing or what they did was fine, where as I read HTC was not happy with some of the firmware in the 4.2.2 update and have slightly delayed pushing thier's out. That seems awfully scary if an Operator is rushing something out.

Seriously... These kind of things make me regret being on sprint. Already our GSM brothers on GayT&T & Fail-Mobile converted their devices to Developer editions & Unbranded devices. We're stuck with stupid CDMA policies

You just dissed every American carrier that carries the One.
Even the sprint and Verizon GS4s received GE edition ROM ports, which has me going crazy. I'm seriously considering ditching my ONE for the GS4. Not to mention the signal for LTE on this phone is seriously getting to me in places I had perfect LTE with my GS3
Nobody has patience.... Just live life and let the update surprise you. Too much demanding going on here.

No demanding. Just frustrated with HTC at this point. 4.2.2 was supposed to be out mid June. It is now July. I had confidence in the ONE but I'm losing it quickly and so are some other people. No projected date, statement, acknowledgment to customers. This is why I left the EVO LTE. I had a soft spot in my heart because of the original OG Evo but it is starting to leave.

There was never a time table. There were rumors that 4.2.2 was supposed to hit in June. And this was for unbranded EU handsets not the US ones....

Regardless, it's been too long. Especially not relaying information to your customers. When your competitors updating older devices quicker than your newest device. That's sad.

Sprint Is Onto Us (Only Logical Explanation)

Ok guys, I'm an avid tether user. I've been tethering my ass off since I'm blanketed in LTE, but as of late I've run into a problem. I noticed on Ecliptic Sense 5.5 that while tethering, the data connection would drop constantly. I was on OMJ Sense 5.5 before and it didn't used to happen. I thought it was just an Ecliptic Rom error so I clean flashed OMJ Sense 5.5 only to notice tbd issue is now there! Someone then said that ports are known to do this so I decided to flash Tranquil 4.3 only to notice... THE ISSUE IS THERE ALSO! I think Sprint is doing this as a preventive measure to prevent tethering. They already blocked WiFi tether somehow and have now sniffed out our script for native tether. Can someone smarter than me (@FrozenRiff) hopefully elaborate on this?
I need to kill some people in GTA V really bad right now!

My tethering works just fine, but I don't abuse it like so many people do.If your using it to tether a console, then get a wired connection. Who would want to tether a console or rely on it for primary internet?

Why not? We've taken Sprint bull**** service for years! I'm blanketed in LTE so it's my choice.

If the terms of your contract say otherwise, then it's not technically your choice...just sayin'.
Also, are you sure they're not just doing tower maintenance or something? Not saying that's the reason, but just tossing that out there.

No because data doesn't drop UNLESS I'm using tether. Take a look at this logcat here. I don't know how to read them, but I uploaded this one for the smarter people

I haven't come across this with sprint, but with VZW (i'm still on unlimited data) once I would get over 30GB no matter which tether method I tried, it would always disable data, then enable over and over. Once I turned off tether it would work fine. Sounds similar, I never found a fix and it wouldn't work properly until the next billing cycle when my data counter reset to 0.
That's what mine does. Do you think that's what's going on? It never drops when not using tether
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 4
I have a different phone on vzw so it's not device specific apparently. This sucks, I'm moving to a Sprint LTE area next month and planned on making up for all this 3g nonsense lol
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Yeah exactly what I was thinking as well, native tethering would connect my laptop on the road but no internet connection, but I could browse on my phone. Used wifi tether and worked perfectly...think they're figuring it out, on OMJ sense 5 ROM.
So you are stealing from a service that legit people pay for and when it stops for you you complain?
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Sprint is the one stealing. Remember the premier benefits? Every year they seem to take more from long term customers and reward new ones instead. Their false LTE coverage map is a joke as well. The ones knowledgeable enough to enjoy the benefit of something that should be offered anyway are perhaps just trying to get their money's Worth out of their service.
Though you probably already have this number saved in your phone since you support them so much, here is sprint's number. You can call them and complain about us there since you won't change any of our minds here.

I'm up to 3GB of force roam data so far too. Screw ETFs.
LMFAO when did people start having a gun pointed to their heads to get a smartphone on Sprint? Anyone who is unhappy should have left in June or July when Sprint changed the contracts and ETF's were temporarily waived

Bunch of frickin cry babies around here. Leave Sprint get rid of the One. Go buy a iPhone or something. Geez
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Not everyone knew they could get out ETF free during that time or sprint would have lost many thousands more customers. The ones that did had to fight for a while to get out. Force roam is pretty easy though.

Eh, getting rid of Sprint without ETF is as easy enough with a PRL change. Roam on VZW long enough and they boot ya.
As far as tethering/data goes, try an AOSP rom, CM10.2 or whatever floats your boat. I have a ONE on both Sprint and VZW (One's business, one's personal) and my crybaby boss set a 2gb cap on my VZW line. Needless to say, the cap doesn't ever kick in on AOSP, but on any stock-based rom (Sense) the data cuts out. Tethering on AOSP is pretty solid also.
Sprint is awful with their false 4g map.... worst 3g speeds i've ever seen in my life. It's atrocious even in MAJOR metropolitan areas.

Video Calling Missing on Sprint

Yes, I searched the Sprint Note 8 forum. So, I have a buddy with a T-Mob Note 8. He tried to video call me. Nothing happened. So, I went looking for the N8 manual. If you get the manual from T-Mob or VZN, they show an icon of a video camera on the dialer screen, to the left of the call button. We lucky Sprint customers have our vm icon there. WTF?! Are we the onlyN8 owners that can't do video calls? Is this because we don't (yet) have Sprint's version of "VoLTE?" Do any of you who bought an unlocked N8, running on Sprint, have this problem? Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem.
I don't know but the more time I spend with a stock note I think I could do. Perhaps my first non rooted phone since flip phones. Still got time to make the change top Verizon or AT&T... You know and actually have a useable network...

Now wouldn't that be EXCITING!!
Actually, maybe T-Mob? Or is that like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire?
I actually think you're right. This phone is great without rooting. Perhaps if we get the U version of software available for the Note 8, that might be worth flashing.

I'm trying to parse your dilemma here.
Video calling works just fine depending on what video calling service you're trying to use. There's a myriad of them out there, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Hangouts...just to mention a few.
As far as i know, there's no native interoperable carrier-to-carrier plain-jane video calling (like native SMS, for example).
Just saying "video calling" doesn't work, or that your T-Mobile buddy couldn't video call you doesn't tell us much. Was your T-Mobile buddy using any of the aforementioned video calling apps/services?
I video call family on 3 continents using either WhatsApp or FB Messenger (on iOS and Android) just fine.
My note 8 came with google DUO. I thought that was androids version of Facetime.

I guess you can refer to it as such, although Hangouts predates Duo. But for you to "Duo" someone else, they have to be using Duo as well.
If Sprint included its own video calling option, I imagine it would only work with other Sprint users, anyway. Just use one of the many video calling apps that your friends have and can use.

Weirdly that call had to begin on Wi-Fi and it would be a seamless transition to cellular data right?
Apparently the note will get that same feature, but who's to say how long until it does?

Wow, and here I was thinking XDA members were smarter than that..... Just so you'll know in the future : each carrier's network varies depending on your location. That's right! How they perform in your town isn't the same as how they perform everywhere else in the US!
Where I live, just outside of Atlanta, Sprint is has the best coverage and fastest speeds. AT&T and Verizon are gradually improving, while T-Mobile is still a joke.
The more you know....
Sprint will update for VoLTE as soon as available like they did for S8 but Sprint does not have built in video calling like T-Mobile...after trying to force the setting, it still doesn't work because there is no app...with T mobile, there is a hidden app that links to the setting...Google duo, hangout, Skype are the only options so far

The Note 8 feature for Sprint Video Calling is still unavailable and Sprint customer care had no answers for me! The video caller icon should be on the dialer not the voicemail icon

That's what the issue is...the video call feature is a phone feature that allows you to video call other galaxy 8 owners...however its been disabled by Sprint when you buy a Note 8 from there network...
