Samsung Pay on PIE beta - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So ever since upgrading to the PIE beta on my note 8 the mag spoofer functionality in Samsung Pay is no longer working. NFC still seems to work but not the mag spoofer. Any one else having this issue or know of a work around?

I don't think the beta version of pie is designed to work with Samsung Pay.

By "Mag spoofer", do you mean "Magnetic Secure Transmission", or MST for short, used for emulating your physical credit card's magnetic stripe?
More info here: https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/what-is/mst/
Indeed, as of now the One UI Beta on Note8 does not support Samsung Pay. After my further testing I've found that MST is disabled, but NFC still works, so I'm using Google Pay as of now.
Really miss Samsung Pay especially the MST, as I've found now Google Pay doesnt work on as many places as Samsung Pay did previosuly, as many of the shops in my country dont have a NFC reader, but Samsung Pay worked flawlessly in the same shops in the past.
Combined with the bugs I've found with Wifi calling, AOD, broken UI, non functioning Intelligence Scan (One of my most anticipated features). Also not really a fan of the new icons tbh.
Although, I do like dark mode and the fact that all most of the UI buttons have been moved to the bottom, I'm currently contemplating whether I should revert back to using Oreo on my Note8 as a more stable daily driver and wait for the official release in February.

Did you try downgrading back?

S7 Active & Android Auto

Looking for some help on a brand new S7A. I was very excited about upgrading to the S7 Active yesterday but that soon disappeared after realizing that this device does not work with android auto because of how AT&T modified marshmallow. After doing some research I found out this is the case with the regular S7 on AT&T as well (and AT&T still has not released a fix as best I can tell....) I have tried the developer mode trick out there on the internet without positive results. You shouldn't have to do that anyway? I have also done full resets on my pioneer nex4200 as well as my brand new S7A. Android Auto works just fine S6A before and after the device resets.
Anyone have any tricks up there sleeve on this brand new device and AA?
I have an S7 edge on att and don't have any issues with Android auto.
On your phone I think your USB setting has to be set to MTP there is a bug that's causing problems

Its not, my AT&T S7 Edge repeatedly disconnects from the stock system in my 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan.

I had that problem as well when I first got the car. Switched usb cables and haven't had a disconnect yet.
Maybe i should have mentioned that in my first reply.
I have an T Mobile S7 edge and it works just fine on my stock Volkswagen head unit. However it was definitely tricky getting it paired the first time.
Before completely coming to the conclusion its an issue with the AT&T S7 Active globally, if there is no press release stating that from AT&T, or from Samsung, or Google then I would not assume that yet. To test if it might be a problem with your pioneer unit I would get someone elses android phone to test and fast before your S7 Active return policy expires with AT&T.
If your pioneer unit works with another phone then its definitely S7 Active. In that case you would have to determine if this is a deal breaker for you to return it for a regular S7 with a tough case.

Google daydream

Hi everyone,
I am using the Gear VR with my phone but for sure it lacks some features. As I see the google daydream is much interesting and I would love to try it/have the headset when iz comes out. What worries me now is if our devices (Exynos) will be supported for the daydream.
What are your toughts on this, do you think we will be able to use it?

I want to kow it too!
I have a S7 so there shouldn't be a lack of processing power.
I don't know if it would work. Maybe someone could test it.

If it is compatible with Gear VR it's compatible with Daydream. They already said the S6 Note 5 and S7 devices will work. They are setting the bar "high" for their VR experience so lower end devices won't work. It's going to go by processing power and screen resolution so I'm guessing from the Note 4 forward shouldn't have any issues.
I just got a Gear VR for super cheap and it's disappointing. Samsung did what they always do and screwed up a minor detail that makes it inconvenient to use such as having to be sitting or standing to use without being able to reset your orientation so you can lay down and enjoy.
Not really at least not officially.
The only devices supporting it are the pixel the lg v20 and the Axon 7.
I hope though that XDA got this covered so that a lot of other people with strong hardware like s7, lg g5 and HTC 10 can use it as well.
It seems like daydream be requires low latency sensors which seemingly devices of early 2016 don't have :/

I think thanks to the GearVR the S7 has some good sensors with latency being lower than phones that aren't designed for VR. The S7 is designed for the GearVR

[Q] Do Android Watches Support Android Pay?

A bit off topic, but I'll try to tie it all together.
I'm really interested in making mobile payments via a device (either phone or wrist). From what I've seen Apple watches can make terminal payments. Do Android watches do the same?
If so, where does that functionality lay? Phones with unlocked bootloaders can't pass Safetynet (I know there are some ways around this) and hence can't use Android Pay. Is the watch's payment ecosystem separate from the phone? As long as the watch is stock, mobile payments will work? Or does Android Pay need to be working on the watch AND phone?
Currently I use a Jawbone UP4 fitness tracker which has support for AMEX NFC payments. It's never really worked though. My wife has the female version and it works great, so I may have a defective unit. Looking for alternatives since Jawbone has been unresponsive.
I do not think Android wear supports this at this time, maybe when 2.0 is released

What apps are bothering you?
If one needs pure Android experience, pixel like would be more appropriate.
I have used the phone over 2 months and have not been affected by any bloatware app. Surprisingly the touchwiz just works great, no lags. Minimal bloatware. I am able to use phones for over 2 weeks at a stretch without feeling any need to even restart it.

Better to go for a non Samsung Phone like Pixel
I love Samsung Internet *_*
Samsung's apps have really improved and now rival the best. Personally, I have deleted most of the apps by Google. You might not be fond of them but they function well and certainly are not ****ty. :-O

I agree. I have always been a gapps kind of guy until I got the note 8. I hate to admit the Pixel line is just boring compared to the direction Samsung is going. I used to hate Samsung and touchwiz (especially my sgs6). But it's much different now. It is actually more useful and customizable than ever before. Everything works as expected and the Samsung apps can be used or turned off. I find I have been preferring the Samsung versions over Google. They integrate better and have more useful features. This wasn't true just 3 years ago.

If I do not like my phone, can I return it?
Costco's return policy for cellular phones is 90 days from date of original purchase. Within 90 days you may receive a refund on the handset itself. However, if you cancel service outside of the 14-day carrier trial period you are responsible for any applicable fees (see carrier Cancellation Policy). All phone(s) must be returned in a complete, like-new condition with all accessories, box, and instructions. Within the 90-day period a defective/non-working phone may only be exchanged for the exact same model. Costco does not sell replacements for broken or damaged phones. Phones may not be returned or exchanged for a different model. All cellular phone purchases require either a new 2-year activation agreement or a qualified upgrade.

You have to download them to device to use them in messages. was the same on the pixel
Added afterthought below
You can also set Google photos to the default photo app by selecting other tab and then images and then Google photos.

Yes that's right. but you misunderstood. I can't even see g/ photos in Samsung's messaging app when attempting to attach a photo. It defaults to Samsung gallery with out an option to open Google photos.
On the bottom of the keyboard go to the other tab. Then select the images icon. It should give you an option to select your default app option. Google photos being one of them. If not, clear defaults to the gallery app and try again.

Same here. I've had a few Samsung's, a couple LGs, but always tried to make them as stock as possible, or flash AOSP ROMs if possible. Then I always went back to Nexus/Pixel. With the S8+ and now my Note 8, I have no desire to go back to the Pixel. I'm sold on Samsung.
The build quality of the hardware is unmatched, not even by Apple. I'm hooked on Samsung Pay. And yes, I LOVE Samsung Internet. I actually get annoyed when something opens in Chrome by default. I may end up disabling Chrome altogether. The lag seems to finally be gone and these phones fly.
I know the Pixel 2 camera is supposed to be better, but in all real life reviews, the results are between this year's top flagships are so close it's ridiculous.
Last night I even disabled GMail and signed into my GMail account on the stock Samsung email app. I love the GMail app, but I love the exclusive preview feature with the SPen. If i didn't use Google Voice as my primary number, I'd probably switch over to the stock Messages app, but I'm stuck with Hangouts. Which is fine, I'm one of the few who loves Hangouts. I'm even using TouchWiz home instead of Google Now or Nova.
Oh, and the Samsung autofill on Oreo is AWESOME. Beats out the Google autofill in my opinion, because it's a little more secure, but just as fast and convenient. But you have the option to choose either one.
Point being, the Samsung apps and experience is light years ahead of what it used to be. You still have the option to switch over to almost all Google apps, including the launcher, bit it's not necessary anymore, or in many cases, even preferable, on a Samsung device now.
This is all, of course, just my opinion. I personally think the OP would be happier with a Pixel 2XL. I loved my Pixel before I got my S8+.

Smart Lock

Hi folks I've never been able to get smart lock by location working on the note 9 exynos version. Having just compared to Note 8 there seems to be a setting missing so I've reported that its not working to Samsung directly and they are investigating. Feel free to log the same fault in the UK on 03307269000. The more who do, the greater chance of a fix.

I made it forget it and re-added it a couple times and it still doesn't work. Not a huge deal, as I have it connected to my watch for smart unlock, but early mornings, late nights, or just lazy days when I'm not wearing the watch, it's annoying.

Just to confirm, you're adding the same location multiple times? It took me adding the same location 6 times before it reliably unlocked for me at home.
