having bad battery drain? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hey guys. I used to have bad battery drain on my note 9. But after clearing the cache memory it is completely resolved. I'm not really a tech guy but this worked so well that I feel I have to share it with you guys.
For those who are new to cache clearing, it's quite simple.
Power down phone
Press and hold bixby button volume up and power button till you see the Android logo. Then let go of all
You'll enter a recovery page. Navigate using the volume button and select using the power button.
Choose clear cache and click yes.
Now choose reboot and you should have amazing battery life again

this does not solved my problem.. it's a bit better, but Android system is using too much battery I think.
is this normal? I can last a day, but It should be better

Have you turned off the background activities from the battery section?

There's a Samsung app "smart things" that needs to be disabled if you don't have a Samsung Smart TV or other "smart" appliance. There should be a message in the Samsung App Store!
This alone gave me 33% more battery life!
Photo's by Sully using SM-N960U
PS. I suspect that if you do have a "smart" device and set the service up you'll also have decent battery life!

Same here, clearing cache doesn't change anything, Android system and/or SystemUI draining the battery around 3-4% per hour, huge number of wakelocks (mostly PowermanagerService and mmc0_detect as stated by BetterBatteryStats), "doze/active with screen off" ratio 1:2 without touching the phone at all and I simply can't find out the real cause .
As far as I can tell the issue started with december security update, didnt have this problem before...

Been asked before but not a answered. What thing in galaxy store are you referring to ?

How long you had the Note 9 ? Mine was real bad 40 ish % i was losing over 8 hour span. That’s with my Note 9 in my pocket 4G on sync on that's it..
i didn’t even touch the phone and i was losing around 40% pure joke! i phoned up Samsung got a brand new replacement off them! One thing i did notice, as i had the phone for 30 days on the 28th day battery did get much better i was losing about 2% every 8 hours! I was about to cancel the replacement i thought f it. I might as well get a new one off them.
Your battery drain will settle down, try a couple of restarts. Also I did run my Note 9 in safe mode! Which is pointless if your trying to find witch app is draining the battery. But try running your Note 9 in safe mode, and use for a bit, Then boot back to normal mode it should get rid of the drain..
Forgot to mention. if I would turn on flight mode, I would have no battery drain! Try that when you go to sleep tonight to see if it’s signal network related battery drain!

I have it since end of August 2018, and has been rebooted many times since, so it should have settled down already It worked OK until december update, but then all of a sudden it has changed.

The native Samsung App Store that mimics the google playstore, in my messages it had a "notice bulletin" to disable it after updates to the "Smart Things" App, you know like Samsung's refrigerator that talks!
Photo's by Sully using SM-N960U
I forget actually where exactly it/the setting is but it's related to this:
android.permission.REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS
The battery opt page but truthfully I forgot how to get there, I'm coming from s5 Active and keep forgetting where stufffsss iz [emoji849]

I never got that. Thanks. But I just uninstalled smart things.

A lot of different variables to consider here...same old battery life complaint. Answer, it depends on the operator.

Same
I have the same issue here. The phone had about 30% battery before I went to sleep... Woke up with 1%.
40% is used by Android OS
20% by the Android system
7% by the Screen
The last 2 days mine has been decent, today has been terrible with really high Android System usage.

I should have been more specific, but this is with what I would call "general use". No video watching, gaming, streaming, which, IMO are the real battery killers. It doesn't seem right that you would lose 33% of the battery in that amount of time from a full overnight charge.

All true, but was your bluetooth connected? Wifi signal, cell signal, all the regular shizzle... How does it look for 4 hours of general use with the Gear disconnected?

Android System is definitely higher than on my S4, but I don't think it's actually drain, something has to use that 24 of the 100%. I'm getting very good life with about 6 hours screen-on.
That said, it would be good to know exactly what's behind it being so high.
I've also noticed more wakeclocks than normal. I thought it was Google Now but I disabled background data for it and it didn't seem to change anything.
We've gotta get root so we can really fine tune things.

Strange i think its something youre doing. I power use all day from 530 am to 10 pm and i still have 25% before bed
I'm getting incredible battery life out of my S5 so far. Yesterday I checked last night and was at 33%, that's with being off the charger almost 14 hours (like 14hr 51min something like that), on screen time of 4 hours browsing with multiple tabs etc (no games), email, about 30 minutes of phone calls, couple text, and streaming music at the gym for an hour. Today I'm at 72% @ 8hr 31min off charger with streaming music about 2 hours (truck and gym), 45min on screen time, only a couple quick calls. I have GPS etc on, only thing I changed and I always do with Android, is set wifi to stay on in sleep only when plugged in, not sure if they fixed wifi bug Android has always had causing tons of wakelocks in sleep mode.

I'm not sure what I could be doing that drains the battery that much, but I'm not ruling out the watch either... Besides if it was something I'm doing, wouldn't that reflect in the battery usage?

Well, the gear 2 is connected all the time... But I had the first gear and that wasn't an issue. I'll have to see in the morning if it makes a difference. I'm on wifi 99% of the time. I have a Tab Pro 12.2 that's on wifi all the time and that thing is only down to like.. 70% after 2 days of light usage with a bluetooth keyboard connected. The battery seemed great a couple days ago and I haven't changed anything... I've actually done more.. used Google Navigation mostly...
I've had gsam on for the last 2 hours or so... am I going crazy or is this normal?

Give it a charge cycle at least.
However, I just noticed something that is really REAALLY messing with my head. I was just looking at my battery stats again and my phone is telling me it's been on battery for 4 hours 51m. It's 4pm here and i've been unplugged since 6am this morning. My earlier post show's 5 hours even! What gives??? The phone has rebooted once today manually. I just restarted again and can confirm that GSAM resets to zero (whatever), but the issue that's really messing with me is that the system battery and uptime shows 4 hours. WTF?! I'm seriously confused.
Something is fishy here...
I'm gonna let the battery drain completely this time...
Well I've had awesome life since I got the phone last Thursday, like I posted on the 1st page, except for last night. Did nothing different from before, no new apps or anything, I disabled sammy and at&t stuff earlier but the phone was fine after that. I went to bed and it was at 34% and woke up 7-8 hours later to a dead phone. No clue what could have caused that as the past week drain even in standby mode was phenomenal, have to install BBS.
Other night I went to bed and it only drained like 5% in the same time
I fully discharged the battery and it seems better now. But when I plugged back in, I noticed that the app called IM+ was running in the background in push mode... I'm not sure if that was causing the problem but it is much better now over the last couple of days
I had a horrible wakelock today, Directv geniego was running for 6.5 hours. Battery life has been great up till today.

Help re battery drainage and synapse optimisation

So I'm fairly new to the Android's scene, I've come from a jailbroken iPhone straight to the nexus 6 after doing a load of research on which phone I should get.
The iPhone is so much easier to work with, in it's jailbroken and default state. I've had my nexus for about 3 months now and only now feel alright using the words ROMs, kernals and flashing.
I want to optimise my nexus for maximum battery life, I know I'll have to comprise with animations and processing power etc.
Here are a few sc of how my set up is currently

I flashed my current ROM and kernal last night and did not charge over night so I could just see how much drainage there is when its on standby. This morning I charged it up to about 81% and used the phone normally and I've noticed my battery is actually depleting really quickly. Especially when you take into account I had my setting to power saver, and I was using pixel off battery saver and a kernal made for huge battery life.
I know the issue is with wakelock? But I can't find any help and what I can find is far too complicated to follow.
Also, synapse. That thing is a nightmare for a noob like me. If anyone could link me to a thread or website that explains each feature or somewhere where someone has shared their setting for getting the most battery life, I will be very grateful.
Thank you in advance

@icameforthehax Thank you for posting the perfect example of how to ask a question! You've provided all of the proper information, in order for someone who can help, to do so. I'm sorry I can't answer your specific questions but I had to comment on the quality of your post. Well done and welcome to Android! :victory:
I'm sure someone with more expert advice than I can provide you on this topic, will help you shortly. :good:
I will suggest this though, look into a third party battery stats/wakelock detector app to more specifically isolate any wakelocks or battery drain. Also, greenify is an excellent option for root access.
well, your play store and android os is way to high on battery percent used! screen should be the #1 battery drainer(or close). other things shouldnt be that far above the percent for screen use.

android os i wont be too concerned about, since that changes depending on how you use the phone, but the play store.. were you restpring a bunch of apps or something? anyways, recharge your phone fully, then use it like you normally would, then past the battery results here, after a full use of the battery, and ill look at it again. next time past not only the main battery page, but if you press on the chart itll give you more info, paste that as well so we can see your signal, wifi, and if the phone is sleeping.

again, you just flashed franco kernel, so youll have to give it a battery cycle or two to regulate, then you can start judging battery life. but your device is goung into deep sleep, so that's good. also, do you always keep wifi on? if you keep it on, but dont use it it'll drain battery. also, what do you have your brightness set to?

Yes I keep WiFi on and use wifi. My brightness is dragged right down with adaptive off, I then change it to 50-70 if I'm outside.

Synapse is confusing to anyone who doesn't know what they are messing with...try FauxClock or Trickster Mod...much simpler and you won't have to worry about changing things by accident by swiping to the next page as you would with Synapse.

Simms is absolutely correct - after a rom or kernel flash you need to give the phone a few days to build up its cache etc...only after that can you properly judge battery life and performance.

screen brightness is a MAJOR influence in battery life. i generally keep my brightness down below 15%. if i raise my brightness to 30-40%, then ill see 1 hour less screen on time. normally, ill see anywhere from 5-6.5h sot. another major influence is the quality of your phone/data signal. some people, no matter what they do, will never have good/great battery life, just because their signal quality is lousy.
Somewhat off topic, but Better Battery Stats is a great app for getting a much more in depth idea of battery life. It'll also give you all the wakelocks, which can be handy if you looking to do more in depth troubleshooting.

Great Battery life with everything enabled.

It's been a week since I turned on most features on my S6. Bluetooth all day. GPS enabled. Auto brightness. Apps syncing every hour including weather widget with location on. Ok Google on system wide and a lot more on too. I don't focus on SOT too much because I'm not on my phone constantly. I focus on overall battery life.

With only 3 hours screen on time of course overall battery life will be decent. I typically lose less than .25% an hour when my phone isn't touched. Slept 10 hours Saturday night and only lost 2%.
when you buy this phone you have to rooted and flash a kernel and a custom rom thats it!! for me im running vindicator r3 and xtretos lite and everything is work! is a huge difference from stock! for me this phone is perfect now. i multitask i do split screen everything you can do. i can't complain

Everything you mentioned works fine without doing all that complicated rooting and ROM flashing process, then having to back up all your apps and messages and wait like 20 minutes to get it all back on there.

You could just buy an external battery pack case and never have to worry about battery life ever running out again within a 24 hour period.
I'm running stock rooted, I'm losing about 1% per hour while I'm sleeping. I'm hoping the battery is still settling in because I'm not able to get great SOT as of yet. I've had the phone less than a week, came from Verizon with the S6E. Would get about 4 hours SOT max there...

My stock S6 will lose about 10-15% overnight when I'm sleeping, I usually end up turning on Battery Saver and enabling Airplane Mode and I still lose about 5-8%. I have to charge my phone a few times through out the day, I'm actually even happier with my JBL PowerUp speakers w/wireless charging, I have them at work and just set it on there when I'm at my desk so I can at least get more juice out of it.
I need to look in to flashing a custom ROM on this, I really don't care about tripping KNOX as Samsung Pay won't even be available for quite some time. Are there any other downsides to tripping KNOX? I know there are ways to get around it without tripping it, but I don't really know if I should care or not.
Turn off lte use only 3g-4g that will help with ur battery drain

Great battery life here with these tweaks:
1) I have a macro (Macrodroid app) which kills select background apps (excluding email, messaging, and such) when the screen goes off.
2) KTWeaker installed using the Asking Alexandra profile
3) Flyon Mods app is also installed and all tweaks are enabled
Under average use the phone can easily make it 24+ hours without a charge

Link to the apps you used? and how do i get the alexandria profile?
Links to the apps I used? Not sure what you mean. I could probaly email you the asking alexandria profile but if you download the KTWeaker apk and launch the app you can download that or any other profiles that will facilitate the performance/battery maintenance you are after.

You will likely need to be rooted for the apk file and possible the Fly on mod.

Huawei P9 battery issues??

Hello!
I love my P9, but there is one problem. I get very bad screen on time, and I don't know if my battery is bad or something is wrong with my phone. Can someone please help me resolve this issue?
Thank you!
I got the same problem. Sometimes it heats even when not in use
Same problem here. The problem is that it drains a lot in standby with 4g. In wifi it the drain is ok.

Yesterday i did a "reset all setting" not factory reset and it seems that the battery is much more ok. My phone does not heat up like it used to do. Maybe a setting that is causing drain in the phone. Will continue to monitor the phone and will give more feedback
Hope it helps

I was able to keep 12hr.. which is quite a big difference for me since I bought the phone [emoji23] i did not use the phone quite heavily today only like 1hr30 SOT.
One thing i cant understand is the high power intensive app that i dont protect keep re opening after cleaning them. How to stop that? I think that this is causing a bit of battery drain. Will not chargw the phone till tomorrow to see if it will stay on. Will post more screnshots tomorrow

My battery discharges 5% after 6 hours of sleep. Is this normal (I've got no protected apps)?
When i bought the phone on 23.05 i was able to achieve constantly 8 to 9h SOT with one charge. Software version B136. Last month this is mission impossible, max 5 to 6h SOT. Same usage, same apps, same settings... Now i am on B182. I wonder if the battery degraded already?
Is Android system consumption level normal?
My Android System battery consumption is always low. Today's usage from 100% to 84% battery level:
Downgraded to B136 and will see after couple of days...
Found previous thread, gonna try formatting SD card with phone, maybe it'll help.

I got alot better battery from deleting facebook on the phone. Still have messenger though. I removed all of facebooks permissions, and it would still open. Both facebook and android uses 100+mAh. If I left the phone over night it would use about 40% of the battery from being idle. First day without facebook and it used 4%.
Using some of application , i get a result by measure the battery capacity is 2900mah , not likely as huawei manufacturer said it is 3000mah .
Anyone know this ?

No , you are wrong
The way you use it affect on the battery. If you just open light app as web browser, video, you easy get 8-9 hours onscreen time, but you play game , or use too much 4g to suffering, it will hurt your battery hehehe

OMG! You have changed my life!!!
No! You are wrong! Because i know how i use my device! When i say "same usage, same apps, same settings" that means exactly what you read! To the last letter! I don't use social apps, i don't playing games. Battery life is worse only six months later even on B136. That leads me to conclusion for battery degradation. Is this clear enough?
Thank you.

Did you use the software update via OTA or flashed another firmware manually via computer?
Honestly I'd stick to OTA to avoid battery drain issues caused by software.
I always use dload method to flash new firmware or roll back to old one then factory data reset twice. No drain, no unwanted background processes. Just SOT is not the same as was in the first couple of months. In general is not big problem for me just sharing my observation. I will order a new battery and will replace it as soon as possible.

battery life

Hi guys. I just bought my phone today installed all the apps and then fully charged it. However I am getting poor battery life. What is causing my battery to be crap? I don't see what the issue can be as it is a brand new phone. Coming from the sony xz premium i feel as if its a downgrade on the battery end of things. Does anyone have a suggestion
I thought my battery was terrible at first when I got it. I noticed lately I have not noticed so much anymore. Right now phone been on for 2 hours straight and lost 25% with brightness half way. Just give it time

It scares me that battery life is not going to be any good and I have to hunt for the charger through out the day. With my xz premium with about 4 hours usage i normally had 40 to 50% remaining. I don't want to think about charging my phone just to get through a day. Lets just wait and see if it gets any better

Android needs some time to adapt to your apps.
I bought my Note8 three days ago and don´t used it permanently respectively don´t have so many apps installed.
I charged it 2 days ago (at 18 o´clock it was fully charged!), now I have 48%
Before I bought my Note 8 I had a Mate 10 Pro with 4000 mAh and 60-70 apps. Android needed 3-4 days to adapt. In the first days I had to charge every day. After a week the Mate 10 Pro had to be charged only once in 2 days.
So do not worry!
Watching this with interest. Mine is a week old and I feel like I need to keep topping it up. On the road all day today and worried she won't make it!
I've a charger in the bag. But going to see how far I get!

Thats what i was saying while i have the chance i might return it and get the Pixel XL 2 or the mate 10 pro. I believe both have better battery life. The pixel loses out on screen quality but makes up with software and battery life. The mate 10 pro loses on software but kills it on battery life. So tough choice to make. However i can't stand poor battery life especially never having to worry about battery life on the sony xz premium
Had mine since day one and the battery gets better the longer you use it. I have several things disabled that are big battery suckers - Bixby for one, don't want or need it. I can go 1-2 to days of moderate use, using an ereader app but no game playing.

The better question is, what apps did you install? You need to just use your phone for a few days. It will begin to background/sleep apps you aren't using which will extend your battery life.

Man those are battery hogs galore!!! Use the device for a few days and let it adjust. Did you enable the sleep function during setup?

Like myself and others have said, just use the device. You're comparing a device you used for a period of time to a device you just got just over 24 hours ago.
Those apps are considered battery hogs because they don't sleep. Also, Xperia devices have a sleep function implemented. They were the first ones to ever have such a robust background sleep function of Android devices.
The sleep function should be on automatically during setup but it could be turned off. Look under battery settings and it'll be there with the option to turn it off. I recommend keeping it on.

There was a video showing ba they life from a s8 a s8÷ note 8 and the late. And the note 8 lasted 2nd best.

I've disabled knox, security folder, bixby, ant radio all the t-mobile apps, several of the edge screens and a few others.
As others have pointed out, the device needs some days and several charging cycles to achieve a good performance, besides, and very important, in settings>device maintaince>battery, there are 2 groups of apps that you can choose, always sleeping apps and unmonitored apps, there you can control their behaviour

I got better battery stats with Bixby not disabled. I may introduce and disable further packages one by one.

Yeah some of the Samsung apps and services being disabled will actually cause more drainage to occur.
