Hi all,
I bought an unlocked note 9 from eBay which arrived today. I got it set up and went to begin installing a different firmware to be able to get the one UI update - only to find out it's a N960U1! I'm in the UK so was expecting/hoping for a N960F.
It's all working, calls work, I've pulled over 3GB of data today all nice and fast, texts working etc. If I was the 'average user' I wouldn't know that it's not a UK one...
My question is, am I likely to hit any road blocks? As long as the radios all work I can't imagine there being any and the play store has all the apps I use available. I'm just wondering if I'm at any advantage/disadvantage?
Thanks

I'm on the same boat (I mean, a similar situation because I'm not in the UK I'm in El Salvador). When I received my phone I started looking for the new UI, but I noticed that I had a very old android build version (I was in September security patch, I received my phone February 11) I started reading about and found out that N960U is the branded version of the note in the US. I wanted to update by Odin to one UI but I was afraid to get my phone carrier locked so after reading a lot more, I found that you can update using the right firmware for the phone (N960U) you don't lose carrier unlock and in my case after installing updates, I don't even have any bloatware.
Now, after this context history, I can tell you that the only thing that will affects is any "radio band enhance" or "carrier feature" and that's because you will not be able to install any UK carrier software to that version because N960U and N960F are different hardware, not just software.
Maybe there is another road block that is about updates, I'm on 9.0 but with January security patch, I have not received any new update. To be hones I'm not sure if there is a new one, so I need to wait to confirm that OTA updates are working for me, if not I will take the time to update by ODIN again haha so that's not something that will drive me crazy, and also related to this I think that N960U android versions are coming faster than I thought, some of my friends with N9600 are still stuck on 8.1
If you want to upgrade go to the following thread, there you will have enough information to update.

Awesome, nice one dude
I used Odin on my previous S8+ to be able to install the one UI beta and that worked fine. Though it did come with a couple of apps that were a part of that carriers firmware (three UK)
I'm aware that the F uses an exynos processor whereas the U is Snapdragon and have seen a couple of guides already. Though they use AT&T firmware and, from what I've seen, have bloatware that would literally be useless to me.
I'll have a look at the guide you linked.
I'd like to have one UI again, but can happily live with the Samsung experience UI if I had to.

Option1:
You can flash the Pie beta since you're running U1, there isn't an official release of Pie as yet.
Option2:
You can switch your device to the U firmware and flash the latest OTA however you would have to manually update each time because you won't be getting an update automatically.

How come the U firmware wouldn't get OTAs?
My S8+ was flashed to get the beta and that received OTA updates.
If I'm to go onto one UI I'd want it to get OTA updates still. If that means waiting for an official release then so be it
On a different note, I installed an app to get the FM radio working today. Can't do that with the UK exynos version ?

Because on the U most OTA comes from the carrier (ATT & VZW) while the rest comes from Samsung.
U1 all updates come from Samsung but U1 updates are months behind.
Advantage of running U firmware is you always get to be on the latest OTA as one is available.

So correct me if I'm wrong but to simplify what you're saying:
The U gets the latest updates sooner but comes with carrier bloat
The U1 gets non bloated updates but Samsung doesn't release then until months later?
I'll leave it and wait if that's the case. I'd be more bothered about having bloat than One UI

Well yes the U comes with bloatware but the amount varies according to carrier, but since you're in the UK. Your CSC will read as XAA/XAA so therefore I doubt you would have any bloatware.
I know this because I myself had own a US device while using in the UK.

Right so even if you switch to U firmware it would still remain XAA/XAA because that would be the default CSC code for Unbranded for American model. F model is normally XEU or BTU

When I did the S8+ I had to go through a pretty big list to find the BTU firmware so assumed I'd have to do the same for the N9
I might give it a go if I get a chance this week
Seeing as you have the US variant of the Note 9. You may have issues receieving connecting to certain networks outside the US. As most US Networks use a different LTE band from the EU/UK
I have N950UZKAXAA (USA Unlocked, carrier free) but about 8 months ago, i flashed the carrier version of Oreo with the hope that it supports AT&T wifi calling, but it was still blocklisted, so i moved on to Sprint. It gets monthly security patches up until February 1 (currently on N950USQS5CSA1).
I want to flash back the carrier free firmware, as i think it got Android Pie. Is it possible to flash Android Pie or Oreo again? If so, what version is good to flash?
Thanks
I think I can follow this below firmware ?

Oreo
N950U1UEU3CRC1
with "Odin3_v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD" ??
The guide says : Note - If you are flashing Unlocked Firmware from Carrier Firmware you must use Prince Comsy Odin otherwise, use regular Odin.
But no prince comsy for Oreo !!!

The Z builds are all bets builds. If you're still on a beta build of Pie, you'll need to flash to an official release. I sold my Note 8, so I'm not sure what the current build number is.

You should be able to still receive the OTA update for your device regardless of your location. I am currently using the Korean variant N950N in Hong Kong and I am able to get the OTA OS updates for my device.

That shouldn't matter. As my N950N is a LG U+ branded unit and I have a HK SIM card in it. I can still get OTA updates without any issues.

Unfortunately it DOES matter on the US variants. If he doesn't have a US SIM in it, then he won't get the OTAs.

If you update you will lose many great things that's the note 8 had .imo the note 8 is not built to run on one ui.i bet you regret it if you update.i had to roll back from the update to oreo and it was a nightmare using Odin as I'm not technical and am terrible with computers.just really happy my note 8 is back to normal oreo performs amazing on note 8 and looks good .one hi looks trash with the new layout

Apples and oranges. The N950U1 is the factory unlocked u branded version and updates are controlled by Samsung. The OP has a Sprint branded N950U, and OTAs would be pushed by Sprint.
Try downloading Samsung Kies onto your computer. Connect your device to your PC and use that to update the OS on your device.
The OP could just flash the N950U1 firmware to his device then he would likely get the OTA updates. But he won't on the N950U. They are the same exact device hardware-wise, just different firmware.

That's why I said the OP could just flash the U1 firmware and get updates. As long as he's on the carrier branded firmware he won't get them.
Thank you for the confirmation that U1 works out of the US with a foreign SIM!
So I find this interesting, I have a N950U1 with 8.0 on it and I have been getting security updates. But I haven't received the 9.0 update. I am in the US on the Sprint network. Now I did buy the phone as a referb through an Amazon re seller, is there something else that I would need to check to see why I am not seeing the 9.0 update?
This is my first go around with an unlocked phone so this is a some new territory for me.

You can try to update using this unkown csc. You'll need to use Odin.
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-note-9-us/firmware/SM-N960U/CHA/
But the n960u won't have all the cellular bands that are used in your country, it'll have most but not all. You would need a SM-n960F if you wanted it to be fully compatible.

ROMs wont change what cellular bands that are active/inactive
And you should be able to flash using regular Odin, but it won't hurt to use modified Odin to gaurentee that it works. I always use the modified version just because.

Finally, I successfully flash my note 9 with ROM from https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/ga.../SM-N960U/CHA/, using patched Odin and no problem appears so far. thanks

Hi,
Have heard of reports of people getting Android 10 via crossflashing to the Korean unlocked rom, but heard of possible caveats. Are there special steps to take? Besides loss of possible LTE USA bands in the firmware, anything dangerous about crossflashing to this

Hello,
I have the same question. I'm tired of waiting Sprint for Android 10. Does it work with this Korean rom ? There is any step to be careful ? Thank you !
EDIT : if there is a Verizon Rom that work with Android 10, please let me know were to download it, i don't find it on lg-firmwares.com
Hello Phantafun/fireblade20, i have the sprint model. And i download the V405UA20A Verizon firmware from lg fan club and as soon as i booted the phone it requested me to update to Android 10, note i do not have a Verizon sim. I did not like the bloatware so i went for the Korean version V409NUA30d BEST DECISION EVER, nothing wrong, did not loose the network bands, plus the Korean version gets monthly updates.
Thanks a lot for the feedback ! I try it if as soon as I can get rid of the error 0x6004 CrossDl :/

sure ... because the korean version is 128 gb, memory, rom?
So, can anyone confirm that v405ua can be crossflashed with korean firmware?
I cannot flash the Korean rom (a new error code), but I finally get rid of the error code 0x6004 : i change the LGUP_Common.dll for another one found on another topic.
I'm on Verizon rom, it's really great : I can now desactivate the bloatware unlike the sprint Roms that lock this option.
I'm not clear on this. Is there a an android 10 ROM I can safely flash on a Sprint version?
