Xiaomi Mi A2 won't boot after January 2019 update - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

I just updated to January 2019 update, everything was fine until i pressed 'Restart now' after it finished updating. Now it froze at Androidone screen. I hold the power button, it vibrates and looks like it's starting up but instead it freezes again at Androidone screen. If I unplug my phone it seemingly shuts down after a while, but again if I try anything it's the same thing again and I remain stuck at the Androidone screen. Please help. Thanks, Vladan

Same issue. After the update..phone boots up to Androidone logo and shuts down. If the I press the power button, it vibrates and comes up to Androidone logo and screen goes blank again

I have same problem. for me it because I forgot to remove Magisk before update. I fix by flash December Rom and then update January pacth.

I have the same issue. I am able to use fastboot commands from my computer, but cannot (or do not know how to) sideload update .tgz file I downloaded from en.miui.com.
Also, I am unable to use adb commands and boot into recovery.

same issue with two mi a2. stuck on bootloader after update.

I can press and hold vol- + power to boot into fast boot.
Then press and hold vol+ + power to get it to boot back to the old partition for normal use.
There might be another update later on which would probably fix the issue?
I tried to update again and now I get the same issue ouch...

Mine went well but I did something wrong in Magisk and it stop booting.
In fastboot mode I've changed it from A to B and it loaded PIE with january update. So, try to change from A to B ou B to A and see if that fixes the problem.

Tried to boot this morning but no luck.
However... The phone came back to live this evening but God knows how.
Mmm... What is going on

Confirmed, unfortunately
Dammit, you guys!.. UNFORTUNATELY, this is confirmed!!
Brand new Mi A2 (Global Version), from the shop today and went through System updates - through, to Google January 2019 Security Update and the device will not boot; same problem as with everybody else here. Argh.

Yup, had just managed to start it: system was up. Went for a Factory Reset and now I'm back in the loop. Stuck again, just upon rebooting. This is going the be a serious issue.
Try to start it with holding both volume buttons down and power - then release after logo and, also -perhaps- volume down.

^^ At least, that's what I think I'd done, heh. Sorry, not 100% sure, all happened in -serious- panic! xF
EDIT: Ah, well, thank God (LOL). It looks like there isn't anything wrong with Google's "Security patch level: January 5, 2019" (Android 9)!
However, because this happened through normal operation - it seems that a LOT of people *are* going to have this problem...
How many know that you should Factory (Data) Reset after a (regular, OTA) update; and how many will be able to boot their device, out of the loop. Geez!
P.S. Btw., you owe me *beers! ;$
EDIT: Zomg., this thread is a duplicate, already @

Had the same problem here with April's update - hanging on logo screen constantly. Issue resolved when I connected phone to pc. Then it entered into factory reboot mode and finally booted correctly.

I had similar issue with April 2019 update. But mine was switching off few seconds after the Android One logo screen. The phone can boot into fastboot mode though.
But instead of connecting to the PC like ol3w, I had mine connected to a charger to add some juice to the battery, thinking I will have to flash the firmware again. Few minutes later, I was promptted with a "The phone failed to boot previously, do you want to "Retry"/"Shutdown"" screen. (note: I can't really remember if the second option was "Shutdown" or something else). I selected "Retry" thinking it will fail again. But then, couple of minutes later, the phone booted correctly.
Xiaomi's security patch is getting quite... unreliable recently. Wondering if I should abandon ship when pixel 3a is out (if it doesnt cost premium money)

Same problem with boot after update 2019

Failed to boot
I had the same problem. My problem was solved by using USB cable. I connected USB cable to the PC and mobile and I pushed Power. Mobile booted correctly and I work from this time. Try it, I wish you good luck.

Possibly Soft-Bricked Moto X with flashing recovery screen

Hopefully you guys can help me with my problem. Recently, I downloaded the new Marshmallow app drawer from Android Pit's "Here's how to get Android Marshmallow's new app drawer on Lollipop". It was successfully installed and seemed to be working fine. However, Google Now gave me a message saying that it was not connected to the microphone and that I should reboot my device. Thinking that the actual reboot key combo was power and volume down, I did this and this brought me to the fastboot page. I selected and entered the power up normally option on the top, which the booted my phone to a completely black screen, from which only the "power off" option would show if I held the power button down. I was confused and concluded that the app drawer somehow soft bricked my phone. After reading up on the web, I went into recovery in the fastboot screen, then selected clear cache. Two lines of orange text appeared at the bottom saying that the cache clear was starting and that it was finishing. I hit the power button, tried to boot my phone up, then, recieving another black screen, brought back up the fastboot menu and tried to enter the recovery screen again so that I could factory reset my device. The recovery screen gave me messages about how it could not load the cache, and since then has been flashing on a set interval on my screen (going black, showing the broken Android with "no command" then going black again).
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem?
note: (I have not rooted my phone)

What is the actual model of your phone. Did you have an unlocked bootloader with TWRP?
The black screen problem can only be fixed by doing a factory reset. After you get into the screen with the dead android and an exclamation mark. You need to press power and volume buttons to make a menu appear. Then choose factory reset. Unfortunately you will lose your data, but this will fix it.

I have solved the issue... I believe it was stuck in some sort of loop with the revovery mode, because that was flashing periodically on the screen. I was eventually able to get the recovery screen to actually stay on the screen and then reset it. Thanks for the quick reply!

I have solved the issue but the actual model is the Moto X 2nd Generation Pure Editon without the bootloader unlocked for anyone with similar issues. Thanks for helping out!
I'm having the same issue today with a Moto X Gen 1 after accepting Verizon's OTA upgrade to Lollipop. Only I can't boot to recovery.

I'm still having the problem that you were facing and cannot get out of that loop sequence. I've booted over and over, tried to launch recovery and nothing... I see some yellow text at the bottom only briefly staying that something couldn't load, then back to the dead-droid/red triangle (no command) for a split second, over and over... I am stuck.

I'm having this exact same problem too! The 'dead droid' just constantly flashes over and over, so I am unable to do anything. There was one time when I held power and the low battery icon showed up with a yellow exclamation mark triangle, but I haven't been able to get that screen again. I contacted Motorola and they told me to try and go to settings and do a factory reset... I just told you I can't turn on my phone! What the hell man. I have tried so many things online and none of them worked. From what I'm reading the only was to fix this is to flash a blank bootloader, but those files haven't been released yet.
The worst part is that I have only been using this phone for ONE DAY!:crying:

okay so after several guides and steps, i finally got my Moto X (1st Gen) working again using the tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWDwyqUF6k4
Essentially i flashed a custom recovery like the PhilZ Touch recovery here http://www17.zippyshare.com/v/40132571/file.html by renaming the "philz_touch_6.58.7-ghost.img" file to "boot.img" in fastboot mode and rebooted after that.
And that was it, phone rebooted and is working fine.

Moto G 2nd Gen Stuck on Fastboot

My sister's phone won't boot now (it hasn't been rooted or modded in any way). I tried going into fastboot to wipe the phone clean but now it won't even go through the boot process.
Before, it just wouldn't charge. Now it won't even boot. So I hold volume down and power at the same time. I wait maybe 5-8 seconds. Select recovery and hit volume up. The screen goes blank. Even after waiting 10, 20, 30 minutes, nothing.
Please let me know what I'm doing wrong. Thank you for your assistance.

ok 1st thing if it's NOT rooted, modded and still has a locked bootloader and you have had less than a year USE the warranty .
there are many cases of 'fried' emmc's that have corrupted or become read only
IF NO WARRANTY and..........
IF you are lucky you may be able to install a stock rom and or factory reset to get it to boot.
if you can tell me model and location I will try to point you to correct firmware / tell you how to factory reset

Bricked Huawei P9

Hello,
after a couple of attempts at installing TWRP recovery, some successful, some not, a ROM reinstall and finally this last factory reset, my Huawei P9 phone is stuck at what appears to be boot or restart loop. It is interesting however that I am unable to turn off the phone at all and it's been like this for an hour. At first, TWRP recovery wouldn't boot but the OS would. Then I did factory reset and phone restarted. Since then it won't boot or turn off. When I hold the power button to turn it off, it vibrates once, then vibrates again and then Huawei logo is displayed. After that a message that says "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted." & "Your device is booting now..." which is normal since I unlocked my phone bootloader, but the problem is that it is just stuck there.
It stays there forever, screen on, phone on, can't restart because it comes back to the same point, can't turn it off since battery is impossible to take out... Any hope? I bought the phone a couple of days ago and this is really bad... Help!
Edit: In case someone else stumbles upon similar situation - after trying everything possible with these 3 buttons I had available (vol+- and power), I have managed to boot by (I THINK) holding the power button for 10 secs but releasing it really fast after the screen turns off and BEFORE the first vibration happens.
Edit 2: Now I have the same problem again and I can't seem to get the right button "combo" to pass the booting phase like I did some hour ago... Any ideas?
Edit 3: It appears that the ROM I have flashed caused problems with TWRP - after I got an SD card, managed to put stock ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/stock-rom-dload-file-p9-eva-l09-b136-t3382818) on it and then did force upgrade, the phone booted successfully.
Step by step:
1) Drained battery to 0% and forced phone to turn off (otherwise it would vibrate twice and get stuck loading TWRP if I tried to turn it off using power button)
2) When I plugged it in and it got some battery power it started, avoided TWRP and regularly booted the OS (which was causing problems with TWRP in my case I think). If you don't have any OS, do not recharge or turn on your phone until you have prepared and put SD card into the phone
3) Downloaded and extracted the dload folder from the P9 stock ROM archive (http://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/stock-rom-dload-file-p9-eva-l09-b136-t3382818) to root directory of SD card
4) Unplugged and turned off the phone using OS Shutdown option
5) Turned it on by holding power, volup and voldown buttons together - "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted. Your device is booting now..." message appeared so I thought it was stuck again and was about to hang myself, but then the OS upgrade started (if it doesn't work right away, try restarting the phone with power, volup and voldown buttons held together again)
6) Upgrade was successful but the phone wouldn't boot without complete factory reset, after which it booted normally. Bootloader was relocked, then I updated to the latest stable EMUI (4.1.1) and life returned to normal.

I can access Fastboot&Rescue mode and use abd (but phone is not rooted). Other than that I can't get to repeat what I did when I managed to boot the phone previous time this happened some hours ago... Can anyone post all volume+- and power key combinations which I can try?
Any other ideas more than welcome...

After getting an SD card (everything I did so far was using internal storage) and putting stock Huawei P9 ROM on it (Android 6 and EMUI 4), then shutting down (forced by draining battery) and doing force upgrade (vol+ and vol- held after power up) I have managed to (upgrade and) boot my phone and get it back to normal again. If anyone needs more detailed explanation on how I solved this, feel free to ask.
Open bootloader again, i had the same problem few days ago
Yes please vernicht. My touchscreen has stopped responding after flashing an update.app using DC Phoenix.

Can you boot into OS? Please provide more exact details.
How I got out of the TWRP(?) boot loop: I couldn't take out the battery, but I have managed to drain it to 0% by letting the phone stay on for hours thus eventually shutting itself down. After that I have charged it and then powered it up. It didn't attempt to boot TWRP (no loop) but instead booted back the OS. After that I could regularly restart the phone and do all operations without getting stuck in loop, which allowed me to issue force upgrade command using hardware power up/down buttons.
Nope. I manage to flash it with DC Phoenix fully but it just keeps boot looping and going back to the Huawei logo. Then after that if goes into its recovery menu and the only my to use the menus is with the volume keys.

Are you able to put files on your SD card? If yes, you can try putting stock ROM on it and then force force upgrading (hold vol+ and vol- together after power up). It should overwrite everything and boot up.
I have done this but it won't even force flash the stock rom. It gets to 5% and says 'system error'
I followed your suggestion to let the battery drain and then I charged it fully, but when charging it got to 1% and rebooted the phone into eRecovery.
I wish I could get this phone fixed and back to normal.

Did you use this stock ROM for P9 (if it's EVA-L09 like mine) or something else?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/stock-rom-dload-file-p9-eva-l09-b136-t3382818
It worked fine with force upgrade for me, while some other ROMs didn't.
Do you have Wipe cache and data/factory reset options available in eRecovery, did you try that?
I'll try that. The only problem I have is my touchscreen won't respond under eRecovery. I have to use the volume and power key to navigate. Any idea what's happened there?

It will probably return to function after you restore to stock ROM. Until then you can use power button to select items in eRecovery if needed.
Btw I have edited my original first post in this thread with step by step guide on what I did in my case.
Thank you Vernicht for all your help.
I finally manage to get the phone fully working again. I also managed to get it changed from C900 to C432, lock the bootloader and join the beta.
Thank you so much again. It's very much appreciated.
Merry Christmas too

Hi nscxp2005
how did you manage that?
i have the same Problem.
i have done a "Wipe Cache" and a factory reset.
i have copied the "update.app" from PauloBrien zip on a sd card in a folder named dload.
then i have done a Force flash -> it goes to 5% an says Invalid File.
when i look in the device with DC Phoenix it says it is a EVA-L09C900B136
Why have i done that?
My wive have the EVA-L09C432B136 and i updatet it OTA to Nougat.
i thought i could switch to that version to get the new Nougat but something went wrong......
thanks in advance and sry for my english =)

Would like some help please.

I have the same issue after flashing the rollback package from the official huawei site. The phone isn't rooted, it just had a branding for some odd reason. So I installed the C432B182 but somehow ended up with a C900B... firmware. So I installed the Rollback package C900B300 using the 3 button method. It said successfull but ever since I've been stuck in the same loop. At the logo. Trying to enter recovery mode (Volume Up + Power) or Force flash any of the firmwares (stock C432.. or rollback C900) doesnt succeed. It wont attempt. Only vibrates as you described and turns the screen off for a second before entering the same loop again.
How did you manage to enter the flash Menu??
Thanks in advance and hope you can help.

Hello!
At me too such problem. When charging to sit at 0% and plug it into the charger, it immediately turns on and goes into the system, then the screen is worth a long logo. I have a phone EVA-L09C627B150.
Help me find my full version! Or I can use this version by reference https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/stock-rom-dload-file-p9-eva-l09-b136-t3382818
Sorry for my English!

Feb-21 security patch update brick phone

This morning, I saw a notification appear on my phone showing that the Feb-21 security patch is ready to be installed. The size is 41+MB. The description looks nothing unusual as this phone has been getting only security patches for quite some time. However, once it attempt to restart it went dead. I tried numerous times to power up the phone (pressing the power button) but it's not responding. Nothing happen. Does it mean my phone is bricked by the security patch update?

First of all:
1. Did you had your bootloader unlocked ?
2. Were you rooted when taking the OTA update ?
Your description doesn't quite match the result.
A differential update (like security updates) shouldn't brick the bootloader and from your description the bootloader doesn't (well) load itself.
Worst case with a diff. update is that the bootloader will give you an error message and won't load the OS but the fact that you have a black screen indicates that the bootloader itself isn't able to operate.
I would try two things:
a) Try to access Recovery Mode : Vol Up + Power + Cable connected
b) Try to access Download Mode : Vol Down + Power + Cable connected
Those two will dictate which actions you can take moving forward based on which modes you can still access.
Also:
Does the phone indicate charging when you connect the USB cable ?
Does your PC detect it (shows up in Device Manager) when connected ?
if a) and b) fails but the PC still detects the phone you might be able to reflash using Qualcomm Flash Image Tool (QFLI), I'm pretty sure there was an Oreo firmware in QFIL format available somewhere on the web.
Edit: QFIL, NB0, recovery MR packages firmware available in this thread [OTA] [Fastboot] [QFIL] Nokia 7 Plus OTA and Fastboot Collection
Thanks for the reply. Finally I managed to boot the phone up by pressing volume up + power button. However, it does not boot into recovery mode. Instead it boots up in normal mode. Since then I did not try reboot or power down my phone. Glad that it's not bricked. And no, I do not have the bootloader unlocked. Though I'm tempted to do so if the updates stop coming. At least I can still breath some life into the phone by installing other flavor of android. Still clinging on to hope that HMD will allow us to officially unlock bootloader. Otherwise, this will be my last Nokia phone from HMD.

Weird bootloop that I've never seen before

Some months ago I dropped my phone at ocean and after stopped work because the USB part was broken. Last week I found an assistance with this part to replace and then my Xiaomi back to work normally.
I reset today and start using normally, but suddenly it stops worked with a boot loop, I couldn't use fastboot or recovery mode because the boot loop didn't stop at all, even with no battery the loop still occurring.
Your browser is not able to display this video.
Anyone knows what to do?
Connect the device to pc and run fastboot devices
While its saying waiting for devices
Hold power and vol down till the pc catches the bootloader.
Maybe it will stop the looping.

Hello, I tried but no success because the loop stop everything I try to do.
I can access the recovery mode, but can't select any option because it reboots again. It's like rebooting every 5 seconds. Tried 'fastboot devices' but didn't show waiting for devices, then I tried 'fastboot getvar all' and worked to show the message besides couldn't stop the loop.
Thanks for your help, I'll keep trying.
Fixed guys!!!!!
The problem was in the power button malfunction, the device was loop restarting because the power button was in some way pressed. I opened, removed and installed the button again and worked =D
