Good afternoon all,
I have my Optimus 4x for around 3 days now, the phone is great in general but i noticed when using applications that require more power the phone heats considerably in the part where the LG symbol is located in the back and i think even more in the front where the screen is.
In my case happened with Skype video call (around 20 minutes) and other time playing a game (frontline commando) for 10 minutes, after it becomes normal again, but as i said i think in general when using heavy applications.
Should i worry about this? is this normal? someone else experiencing the same?
As the phone is new i would like to know if is a defect to send it back.
i have software version V10d
Thank you
Its completely normal, the Tegra chipset is just behind the LG logo.
Got to remember there is a quad core and 3d graphics package sat under there

How hot does it go anyway? Is it hot enough make you feel very uncomfortable during a call with the phone next to your face?
I have never had it get hot during a call. Only during something like Dead Trigger.
Even then, it's hot but I can still hold the phone. When you consider skin burns at something like 44 deg C, its not really getting that hot. Especially when you think it's a quad core CPU with no heatsink or ventilation.

Yes i imagined exactly that there would be the processor, of curse is not hot enough to burn but is definitively hot.
My only concern is if in the long term this temperature wont damage the screen or other parts of the phone as for example in my laptop the nvidia video card heated so much that got damaged.
do you have any idea How should be the "normal temperature", is there any app to measure it?
For example does the galaxy 3 gets also hot ?
Sorry for so many questions but im not an expert and i want to be sure i make the right decision
To answer the call question, for me just gets hot as i said when using heavy applications, i would consider just annoying in the case i received a call meantime i played (etc) and the phone was hot but not to the point to say im burning.
Thanks for the previous reply's
Tegra 3 will be shutting down when it reaches about 90_degrees afaik. Don't worry your phone won't die. Only the battery... :-\

Anyone with any update? Its been 5days since I am using p880 and it gets heated up as experienced by other users near LG logo my OS is up to date (v10e)..also I feel battery drain much faster with when heated. Anyone can confirm same?
..cause->effect, not the other way around, and so on.
But generally, a passively cooled device like this /should/ get hot on the outside fairly quickly, instead of containing the heat. On the 4x, it seems like there's a frame on the inside going around the edges that will lead heat there first. Away from the battery, the middle of the screen, that sort of thing.. Ideally that heat would then disperse without ever reaching uncomfortable temperatures. Thought they did pretty well with the 4x. Seen several tablets.. with lower heat signature than a tegra 3 chip.. end up with a few typical spots the heat ends up on the outside (middle of the screen, contact points on sim card, battery, memory card frame, stereo jack.. copper, see?), because the heat is really being contained inside the device much longer than it should.
And then people happily use the device until it breaks. I don't think that's really a problem with the 4x.
I also have this heating problem land looking for a solution. I have p880g (Canadian AWS version) with 10c firmware. It got really hot before I even finished 1 game of The Game of Life. it wasn't skin burning hot, but hot enough to be uncomfortable, similar to a laptop power adaptor. I also think that it was hot enough for the phone to start throttling. The quadrant benchmark I ran while it was hot was lower than the usual.
I don't think that this game is too cpu and gpu intensive that it''ll max out all the LG O4X's hardware. I tried this same game on Motorola defy with cm9 (overclocked to 1ghz) and galaxy tab 10.1 (stock). Both ran it perfectly fine with no heating issues.
I hope someone can help. It makes this phone's Tegra 3 a bit useless if it starts to overheat with less than 15 minutes of playing a game. If this normal and what LG intended, then will likely be my las t LG phone.
Hi guys! I have the same problem - hot phone when I'm plaing some games. My question is: How many percent of battery drain the game for 10 minutes? In my case, for example bad piggies 10 minutes = 10% of battery. I have brightness of display on 0%. So I installed app called PowerTutor (it show you how much energy drain every app) and this app said that bad piggies drain about 600 J for ten minutes.
How about you phone? Thx for answer...
No one answer?
That's ok. All cpu's are active in this game's so heating is normal.

After searching this forum more I''ve found a solution. The heating problems for the LG O4X is fixed with the v10f and up firmware update. This thread has more information about it.

So I have v10H (newer than v10F)...
And I dont think that bad piggies are used all 4 cores, because my friend have only one core and he plays this game smoothly.
When you play this game, prosecutes to charge your phone?

Same in my case when playing games (swing shot, death dome..etc) it gets heated a lot and battery drains like passing minutes...
I played dead trigger with NO wifi,no 2G/3G, no nfc, no bluetooh and less then 50% brightness in 30mins more then 50% battery drained. And this happened with every game I tried.
I bought this tegra3 device only for games but this heating and battery draining is making it pretty useless for game.
Any developer can throw some light please.

Unfortunately v10f couldnot resolve my issue and I find v10f/v10g is same as my regions latest v10e.
heating is not a problem its normal because its tegra3 and Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9

well, I`m on v20a official software. With v10h I had the issue of overheating when playing a flashout 3d free game - I dont know how, but thermal protection didnt work. After 5 minutes of play, I felt big heat, so I came back to home screen and at this moment my beautifull-brand-new 4XHD went black screen - no buttons worked, even keeping long pressed power...so I took out battery and re-inserted. After start the screen was shaking like it had low-refresh rate applied...I was terrified. I took out the battery for one hour and after this all went to normal. Then I updated by official LG app the software to v20a and checked that phone gets very hot with this app again, but this time I managed to close and uninstall app without burning my new phone...so I gave it a 1-star rating and a comment in google play. Now I installed some app to monitor temperature inside and I see that with nfs:most wanted after 15 minutes of game, it was at 40 degrees (celsius). I checked with other apps and I see this was max and it felt/feels very hot, though this wasnt so hot like I felt with flashout 3d.
My question to all of you 4x HD users is:
can you tell me your temeperatures? Min/max ?
I mean: I have minimum 26/27 celsius (phone in the pocket), with data, bluetooth, nfc on I had about 30 celsius, and maximum 40 celsius (when playing demanding game). Also I saw big increase in temperature outdoors with bright sunlight(I have automatic brightness on all teh time) and while having data, bluetooth, nfc and GPS on.
Hello everyone, Please help me with an advice, I bought my Nokia 7 plus a week ago and since then I noticed that when light gaming the phone turns pretty hot. You can feel all the back getting hot.. And the battery temp is around 44-45 degrees Celsius. I ve talked with suport and they said different things. From my knowledge 45 degrees Celsius for a battery is pretty hot. So.. Is this safe? Or should I get it replaced? I am happy with the phone except that I would like to know what's the safe battery temp. Thank you
Hi all.
I have written a comment to another created threat in mi 9 forum, but I would like to read your comments here too.
I'm having battery draining and SOT problems with my mi 9, like I said in title (like most people I think).
I have tried everything to improve my battery life in my mi 9, and It's not bad at all, but I was expecting better performance for a top xiaomi smartphone with sd 855 and 5 months old in spite of the fact that it has "only" 3300mah battery ...
I'm not a heavy user and I try to get max SOT and minimum battery drain in all my phones, because I don't like changing smartphones very often and I like to take care of it.
I came from a Moto G4 plus, and I had 5h of SOT in 48h without high standby drainage (maybe 1-2% of drainage overnight in 7-9h) with a 3 years old battery and worst hardware and software. In mi 9, I'm getting 5-6h of SOT in 48-72h. Not bad at all, but standby drainage is awfull. It loses 20-25% of the battery every 48h (3-5% overnight), and in a smartphone with such a fair battery it's a problem. If I'm not getting great results with not heavy use and my smartphone is new, I don't want to think in 2-3 years + mid-heavy use ... I have tried everything (full wipes, reinstalling, the most powerfull battery saving, etc) and I don't have great result. Standby drainage is very hight compared to other phones (I have tried a friend poco f1 and I had 10h in 48-72h with 1% overnight drainage. It was awsome).
And now the question ...
I'm thinking of changing my mi 9 for a huawei mate 20... I still have the 30d Amazon refund and I am not comfortable with my phone's battery.
- Mate 20 pros vs mi 9: +700 mah battery and more efficient, the best ips panel without burn-in problem, and fingerprint sensor behind the screen (no like too much in-screen fingerprint at all).
- Pros mi 9 vs mate 20: sd 855 (but geekbech it's very very similar, and antutu winner is mi 9 only for gamming but mate 20 still on top), unlocking bootloader for mi 9 (better comunity in xda, but if emui works well I think I don't need custom rooms, the problem here is Trump/google vs China ... but now apeares to be solved and we would have newer updates to Android Q), wireless charging (I don't use it because smartphone is hotter when charging 3-5º vs cable+1,5a charger, It takes more time to charge with elevated temperature), not jack (better for waterproof), maybe very little better cameras in mi 9 and little better results, 4 months younger (very little difference) and It's the top phone on xiaomi (mate 20 is the little brother because we have mate 20 pro, 20x, p30, p30 pro and we will have soon mate 20 and mate 20 pro; and that could be worst because we will get latter uptdates in mate 20).
What do you think? Would you change mi 9 for mate 20? Reading your comments. Greetings.
If your looking for better battery life I'd say get the mate 20. I've had mine for just under 3 months. Best damn purchase I've ever made (purchased way below retail during trump ban). I consider myself a medium to heavy user (I don't play mobile games however). With some useless features turned off and some fetch services disabled. I can easily get 8-10 hrs on screen time with this phone, it's the best battery life I've ever had, prior I was getting 4hrs with another Android phone.

Heat? I haven't had any issues with heat if by that you mean does the phone get too hot to touch, it's cool the majority of the time. As for performance, EMUI 9.1 is very smooth and I haven't had any slow downs ??.

Just a month ago I had Poco F1. On the battery Sot was similar to the 20 mate. Night drainage in Poco 1-3%, mate 2-5%. Mate saves better on screen on. Performance similar to Poco. If I had to exchange Mi9, it was on mi9t Pro.
I bought a xiaomi mi 9 phone a few days ago, I found on the internet that the battery in the phone should reach low temperatures. I would like you to check if they are normal.
When playing not only demanding games, the battery quickly reaches a temperature of about 38 degrees Celsius.
During normal internet browsing, the battery reaches about 36 degrees.
While watching Youtube the battery reaches 33 degrees.
Sometimes these temperatures are lower. I care about the assessment because I want to finally take care of the phone. Thank you for your help and sorry for poor english.
If you want our opinions on whether those temperatures are acceptable or not, you have to also share the ambient temperature.
38 C should be normal for 23-24C ambient, don't be fooled by some supposedly "light" games that are badly optimized and eat the battery alive causing heating, just because a game is 2D doesn't mean it consumes less battery.
36 C for "normal internet browsing" seems too much, I get way less at 23-24 ambient, not more than 30 C.
33 C for youtube is fine especially if the videos are bright with sound turned on.
The ambient temperature is about 22-23 degrees, maybe a little more. Unfortunately I don't have a thermometer inside the house. Now while browsing the internet, the temperature was between 31.5-32 degrees.
Usually the screen brightness is set to half the bar or slightly more than half.
Are you sure your battery have this temperatures? Sounds like the cpu for me instead.

I am 100% sure. Are these temperatures good or should I give my phone back for warranty?
I will add that I always charge the phone from 30% to 85%, apparently so there are less charging cycles.
When charging, the battery reaches a temperature of 36-37 degrees.
I never charge it at night. When I was sleeping, the battery level dropped from 30% to 26%, that's ok, right?

Temperatures look similar, how do you rate my temperatures? Should I care?
Edit:
Could any of you do a stress test from antutu? I put my results below. Next to it is the battery temperature right after the test, which reaches almost 40 degrees Celsius. I will add that I have a case from xiaomi.
have been using Rog 3 about a month and noticed that the battery is not that great especially if we consider it is a 6000mha, at least in my device
thought i would share some screenshot to my battery and hear your opinions if you think it is OK or there is something wrong
What did you expect? Your battery life is pretty normal for a 6000mah battery device. Not piss poor. Not great. Just normal. Were you expecting 3 days standby time with normal usage?
I might see it wrongly but the first pic is showing the phone is up 1 day 9hrs without charging, that's more than what I would asked for.

Something is wrong with your set. Please get a refund from the seller. Even by playing PUBG or COD in X-Mode at max brightness does not drain from 100% to 0% in 3 hours.

Can't compare a 60hz screen with a phone giving 144hz screen. The drain of the screen will be much heavier than 60hz.
The 6000 mah battery is really good when you compare from specs point of view. Higher CPU clock speed, higher GPU clock and higher screen refresh rate and faster and more RAM. A Ferrari will use much more gas than a standard car even your Ferrari have a bigger gaz tank.
I can use this phone without ever think about getting out of juice before I get to sleep.
In the last 7 hours I used my phone for 4h20, playing game during 2 hours (COD and PUBG) and 50% of the battery remaining. So if I keep using the phone that way it means that I could run out of battery with about 8h SoT and 4 hours of gaming. I never had a phone allowing me to play that many hours of high quality games with all graphics to max.

Yes, I don't know a phone that gives you the perfect battery calibration. This phone show a loss of battery really fast in the first 10% then afterward it is slower.
I remember my Sony Z Ultra was really slow to lose the first 10% then battery was dropping really fast until reaching 20 25. And the remaining battery was longer to be used than the 60 previous %.
Or my HTC Sensation XE that could be used about half a day to drop from 5% to 0.
