My wife received an update notification today on her Note 9 (SM-N960F). I was quite excited as I'm still waiting for the update to pop up on mine.
Anyways, after the update finished the phone rebooted and after the unlock part there is a little unlocking animation which goes on until the phone restarts again, after failing to boot the second time this error message shows up (see picture).
Anyone knows how to fix this without wiping all data/factory reset? I went to the recovery and wiped the cache partition, but didn't help... I can only use adb in sideload mode, but I'm not an expert so don't know if that helps or not... I also tried booting in Safe Mode, but it was just loading and then restarting again.
Take it to the service center and let them help you. They might be able to do without factory reset. Fingers crossed

I just had a conversation with them on the chat and they suggested the same thing. Luckily there is one 5 minutes away so I will go in tomorrow.
In case this happened to anyone else, please let me know if they were able to fix it without losing all data.
UPDATE -------------------
I think, I've found the issue! She had Substratum theme installed and I think that's causing the bootloop. I tried sideloading SubstratumRescue.zip but it says Signature verification failed.
Any suggestions?

Have you looked into ABD Commands? As you should be able to back up your Note-9 that way! Google search and XDA search are you best friends! That’s if you not familiar with CMD and ABD Commands!

You shouldn't, just make sure the firmware you are flashing is the one that your csc supports...
Just note, Samsung seem to be releasing generic roms that have multiple csc support... Just check yours is supported...

USB Debugging wasn't enabled, so I could only use ADB in sideload mode which was pretty useless. I'm pretty sure substratum messed up the phone so it would have been an easy fix with fully working ADB...
Anyways the engineers were useless so I had to reset the phone and it's working again.
Thanks guys!

so i used odin to revert completely back to stock jf6 firmware, everytime i try and update it goes thru the process of updating and stops during reboot at 50 percent and says download failed, can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue. im all ears, thanks in advance...
this seems to be happening to all of us who had been rooted at one point or another
yea this will be my fourth try. this time im going to do a factory reset and sign into the market and see what happens. i wonder if this has something to do with the jf6 zip that all of us are flashing back to....
interesting. ive been seeing a fail message as well but 3-button recovery is working now.

Can you use File Explorer or USB debug to see if there's an update.zip in /sdcard on your device?

Guys.. chill out - the Samsung official announcement said
"An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers' devices over the next few weeks."
You do not need to check for the update yourself.
not the point. the point is, it is possible to get it now, and it's not working for us rooters :/

well... i backed up my contacts with kies... i'm going to completely clear everything and go back to stock...
after that i'll re-root. but i'll be sure to use the adb shell to backup the stock kernel...
Its working now for me, I also got the updated failed message and have rebooted my phones several times through the day and just verified on google maps twice that it zoomed in accurately

call me stupid, but how would I go about installing this?
While I realize it is relatively few to SPH-L720, I wanted to make a thread specific for the update ending with NAF for the triband variant,
the SPH-L720T.
While you may argue there is already a thread for the update, most of the userss are L720 not L720T, so the questions from L720T users keep getting drown out by others.
First order of business, though it has been asked but it has gotten no reply that I am aware of, has anyone gotten the OTA for the triband variant?
If so, can it be uploaded and distributed? It will be interesting to see if all the problems such as the sd card and rooting are the same.
I have the "T" model, and no OTA for me thus far.
I have rooted and installed some xPosed apps, but no custom recovery or rom. I'm hoping for 4.4.2 this week or so

I also have a 720T and haven't received notification of the update. I actually kind of regret my purchase of the 720T. I waited about a month to buy the 720T instead of the 720 because I figured I might as well "future proof" my purchase, but it seems most of the 720 mods and such don't work on the 720T. And with the S5 coming out, I think we'll be left in the dust. (I hope I'm wrong. My last phone was the original Evo and I loved how many different mods/roms/etc that had.)

(I left off my last paragraph, oops) I'm sure we'll have the same issues with SD Cards since it's part of the new Android standard (or, newly enforced, at least) and root exploits would normally be fixed independent of the radios.
It's crazy that I haven't heard a single person on the 720T getting the update yet... has anyone done the google services framework clearing thing yet? I know it jacks stuff up but I'm thinking of trying it soon.
i tried it. no luck.

Okay, thanks. Factory reset is what got me in this in the first place. (Well, not the first place, but it's what I can't get out of!) is not changing anything. If you're rooted, factory reset will not work. You will need the KDZ file to wipe your phone, which is currently in the works.
If you actually got it to boot, then you're fine. That "activating" screen sometimes takes several minutes. Just be patient.

Thank you for helping. I don't actually make it to an activating screen. I just get one step past wifi (if I keep wifi on it gets caught in updating system. If I turn wifi off it gets caught in just a sec). It will "load" (lack of better term) for 1-3 hours. I did discover that I can receive phone calls while stuck in the screen. And I can hear when I get a text message, although I can't check it. But that makes sense if I can't factory reset a rooted phone....

I think I may be seeing something related to what you're seeing (though I'm not starting over from a Factory Reset). Ever since taking the root flash, my wifi isn't connecting to my home router anymore.
I was just about ready to do a Factory Reset to see if that fixed it, but now it doesn't look like that'll help.

During the initial setup after factory reset, when you get to the wifi setup screen can you just skip over the wifi setup? Is it possible your wifi isn't working (mine isn't either) and as long as you keep attempting to connect you'll never get past that step in the initial setup process?
i need zv4 rooted system file, i'll root the phone using the zv4 file and will do OTA , thn will get the update.zip for ZV5.

Just got a new Verizon Nexus 6. Never rooted or messed with android in my life. I installed Android M on it (with hours of frustration) and then was following a guide to root it while being on Android M. Somehow I deleted EVERYTHING on the phone, it says the phone is corrupt and wont start when I try to turn it on. (I have Team Win Recovery Project v2.8.7.1) How can I fix this ASAP? Have no idea how. I just need a working phone. Please help thanks!
If you can boot into TWRP just download a ROM and push it to the device and flash it. If you can get into bootloader you can flash a factory image to fix.
If you've never rooted, let alone even used Android, why the hell are you installing a dev preview onto your device? Guess you found out the hard way. Just saying....

Easy to fix if unlocked and have TWRP. Recommend going to stable build first and work your way up. At least will have a working phone. Make a backup up stable build and then play all you want. Could have made backup of stock before even flashed M and would have been golden.
What did you do when you got the corrupt message? I'm asking because many people get this message but if you ignore it, it should boot up anyway.

It sounds like all you need to do is: when you get to that "phone is corrupt" screen, press volume down and then the power button to continue.
So it's the problem that so many other people seemed to have before, I've just bought my new Nexus 6. And can't update it. It's brand new. I just get the message ''Error'' I reboot it and it works again. And it says it has the latest update, It don't. I now nothing about sideloading stuff. I'm swedish don't have a clue what to download or anything, Tried deleting cache memory, Factory reset and it still don't work. It's a god damn Nexus phone! Shouldn't it work out of the box especially with updates? Please help.

How did it fail?
An error message / screenshot would help.
Did you use the flash-all script or flash each file manually?
Details, please... As already stated by murtaza02.
I just wanted to chip in and say that I hope you used the factory image for Nexus 6 (Shamu), since your link is to Nexus 5X (Bullhead). Bad things can happen if you use the wrong images...
And, if you want, I could help you out in swedish, if that would be any help. Just PM me...
So i got the phone replaced, It went fine. They didn't seem to care about it. New phone same problem. Can't update. C'MON GOOGLE. It's a software bugg? What am i supposed to do? I've already destroyed one lol
IIRC this was a relatively common problem around the time of 5.1.
Either the OTA update itself is corrupt or there's something on the phone that messes with the verification prior to updating. Before the screen with a dead android and "Error!", are you getting error messages along the lines of:
system partition has unexpected contents
E: Error in chace/update.zip
status 7
install aborted
You could try factory resetting and clearing cache in recovery. It might work, it might not...
1 - Turn off your phone
2 - Hold and press power button and volume down at the same time until you get to the bootloader screen (an android on its back with a bunch of information about your system).
3 - Use the volume buttons to select "Recovery mode" and press power.
4 - You'll get another android lying on it's back. Press both power button and volume up to enter the recovery.
5 - Use the volume buttons to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" and press power to confirm. Do the same with "wipe cache partition".
If you can get a working update after this, great. But, if the problem persists, you have two options. Get the phone replaced again or use a factory image to update to the latest android (currently 6.0.1 MMB29V). If you want to try flashing a factory image again, i'd suggest you first tell us EXACTLY (every singel detail) what you did last time, since it didn't seem to go too well...
