Just wondering how well does AOSP work so far for Note 4?
Do all features work without glitches? Are there still problems with Samsung not releasing drivers/documentation causing serious bugs and glitches? How is samsung-specific hardware (like S-Pen or fingerprint reader) functioning on AOSP builds?
I'm considering Note 4, but I want a phone with well working AOSP (for example Note 2 has a lot of issues, especially in Lollipop versions, presumably due to lack of Samsung's documentation).
Basic ly you lose all extra features with aosp
Crappy camera no pen. This is with all samsung phones

I'm aware about loosing all fancy samsung S-Pen apps but how well does S-Pen work technically (does it support right-click via pen button for example? This feature got cut in Lollipop on N2 for some reason so I'm wondering if it works on N4).

Again two phone were mentioned and I have no idea which you are referring to. I'll assume Note 4 .
Everything works fine. Even camera and sPen. UHD recording works. Battery life is ok. You'll get around 12-18 hours of moderate usage. Of course you will loose TW features but you should already have known that. If you don't use action memo, S-health, S-whatever, KNOX or use the downsize app feature (Which nothing supports it anyways) then you will be fine.
EDIT: I forgot to mention. If you have another Samsung accessory like the Samsung Gear 2 then you don't want to use anything but TouchWiz. Samsung has locked out paying customers from using them on anything unless it is running BloatWiz, I mean TouchWiz.
Yeah I meant Note 4, I mistyped, sorry (edited my post above).
Thanks for the answer.
Also @airwa1kin7 does what you said apply to Kitkat roms or also to Lollipop ones?

S-pen works fine. FV-5 camera is great and UHD recording works fine. Currently the finger print sensor is not supported, but might be in future versions, most of the code is there already: Google pulled it at the last moment cause Apple bought the company but most was uploaded already, so it should be doalbe to support it.
Battery is the same as TW. ROM is stable, no crashes or weird bugs.
Anyway make sure you buy the snapdragon variant if you want AOSP: Exynos chipset is not yet supported and I'd say you'll see the Note 5 in the shops before the Note 4 Exynos AOSP is stable.

Haven't used a KK AOSP ROM yet. If i'm going to go through the painful process of using 4.4.4 I'll just use TW instead of AOSP. I've primarily just used LL AOSP ROMS.

Yeah. s-pen Air view/command just works as in TW. And you can link ejects of the s-pen to an action (like opening your favourite memo). However you can not select and copy/paste a part of the screen although it should be easy to write an app for it, maybe it even exists (it should just overlay the screen with your sketch and then copy/paste that area).

There are several camera apps. The CM12 stock cam, the google cam, the FV-5 cam, open cam, snap cam, just to name a few. I don't like the CM12 stock cam too much neither but the FV-5 camera app is pretty good. It costs $3 though but those are $3 well spent in my opinion You don't need the Cm12 ROM to test them of course, they run on any android platform, so check them out, all available in the app store.
The Samsung cam app is indeed quite nice though, that's one of the few things Samsung actually did right

That I know. I was being silly.
I had CM12 on my note 4 for a couple of weeks, it wasn't stable enough for a daily driver really, some of the issues I had:
- Overheating, the phone gets hot, really hot, not just normal warming from charging or heavy use. On one occasion the phone smelt like burning electronics, i thought it was going to be dead.
- Camera is unstable, on first launch it was okay, subsequent launches gave an error of unable to connect to camera, only a reboot fixed it.
- Battery life is aweful, on echo i charge once a day on CM12 I had to charge 3 times a day.
- Random reboots, the phone would reboot then get stuck on the CM loading screen.
(I have the N910G,things maybe different on the N910F)
Yeah according to above replies N910F is considerably better than C edition (Apparently Exynos documentation still sucks way more than Qualcomm's?).
Thanks for the answer though, now I know N910G is completely off limits for me.

Had the same problems with my Note 4 - N910F, lol..
I'm stuch with Touchwiz aswell at the moment
So I was perusing ye olde rom page and saw the latest cm. I used to love CM. But I don't want to lose my pen features. I know some alternatives exist, and I'm ok with using them I think, but I want the full feature set too.
I found a launcher alternative similar to notebuddy http://www.emandt.net/Android/SPenCommand/Website/
not sure if I will get it but it looks fully featured like the regular TW one is.
Which brings me to my question, is there an app out there that will let me screenshot the screen and pull text from whatever I select like the TW feature set allows? That seems to be the only thing I can't find. Screen writing, note taking, the rest seems all easily findable, That however is lacking and I use quite often.
Anybody have any information?
So I'm guessing with the no replies that spen on AOSP is dead in the water? Or is the note 4 forums just deserted? Very strange nobody has answered this.
Notebuddy
2 years is a long time in the mobile world and most note 4 users have already moved on.
When I was on CM, I would use Notebuddy and it's s-pen addon.

Yes and no. Normally I would agree 4 years is a long time. But look at what has come out in that time. Samsung has dropped and picked back up many features that people still want that the note 4 still features. Hardware wise it isn't even far behind, if proper roms are built for it.
Idk, maybe it's just me. I just hate to see this phone die when the n5 is garbage lacking sd card and IR, with removable battery. Everything more or less seems like a downgrade or minor upgrade. N4 is an amazing device and I see no reason it should drop support just yet.

I used emandt's setup and it was alright. There are some playstore spen apps that add feature, not sure if the select crop is one of them though. Most spen addons from playstore require payment for the useful options to work.

There should be a download link on the post, it's right above the interview with the developer. Yes, I have them both installed on my home screen and they both work fine. Just install it like a regular apk.
Seems Note 8‘s camera works as well as google camera?
Is there somewhere that explains the differences in the various algorithms? I searched around but found only bits and pieces.
Also, it would be nice if someone could post which settings actually work for the Note 8. I tried a few and some wouldn't save and others
(I'm not a big camera buff and really don't use my phone's camera that much, otherwise I would.)
I'm seeing people state that the Google Camera is a bit better than the Stock Samsung one, but my experience is the opposite. Google Camera is giving me bad low light performance. I even used setting from the forums and was still subpar. What settings are you guys using?
I couldn't get this to work on my AT&T Note8 un-rooted.

Not correct. Works on Exynos too but if you try to make any changes to settings it'll crash. Only way to revive is by clearing storage from settings!
However I didn't find it significantly better than stock camera and night time/poor lit/dark conditions photos are definitely better with stock camera.
It is obvious that the battery is no longer replaceable, but there are also other removed features.
I have been using a Galaxy S3 for a long time, because I wanted to wait for the S6 originally, but it turned out different than expected. I was also open for other phone brands.
However, I am wondering about why certain features from previous Samsung phones are no longer there.
Examples:
Radio - Could be useful to gather traffic information where signal reception strength is too weak (no coverage).
Air View - I looked forward to that feature, because it can give me a video preview like YouTube on the desktop computer. Apparently, that feature is no longer there.
Gestures - Didn't previous Samsung phones have some Air Gestures?
Thermometer - Allows temperature measurement.
Drama Shot - I don't care much, because GIMP and Photoshop can do it better probably.
USB 3.0 - Now, we have USB-C, gladly.
Water resistance - Gladly back again.
Battery size - Unfortunately not much improvement here, over the last years.
FTP file manager - I can use ES File Manager for that. No problem.
MicroSD - Is back again.
Infrared - Would really be nice.
Real home button - Is nice but I can live without it.
There were also other minor features I forgot to mention.
Here is a comparison between Galaxy S5 and S6: https://youtu.be/ksa5HKcqrW8
_________________________________________________
Now, why did Samsung remove certain features in the past such as Air View and Gestures?
I would have liked to own a phone with Air View.
Not sure anyone can explain the reasons for why Samsung does things. I assume it's based on market research, profit margins, etc. like any other business.
As sefrocko said, market research mainly
Is this thread about S6 or Note 8? Wrong forum?
Some examples seem incorrect for Note 8:
Air view is still here!
Radio depends on version, SD (e.g. N950U1) has FM radio.
I agree that with sefrcoko. Also, if you remove feature, you can re-introduce as new. Like multi-window was already possible with Note 2 and Note 10.1 in Android 4.2, disappeared and came back later..

The build number shows G950F which is the Galaxy S8!!! Are you sure this is a Note 9. Can you post a screenshot of the Download/Odin mode screen?
Moreover 'Hardware Qualcomm Technologies inc MSM8998' is the Snapdragon 835 processor which was there in Note 8 and the S8 series. This is one problematic device you have. This is certainly NOT the Note 9 if the processor and the build number were anything to go by.

Going by your post, it may also be that a ROM not meant for the Note is probably flashed on your phone. That would explain the S8 build number. Could you tell me how you are getting into download mode on this? The reason I ask this is because on a Note 9 you can only get into download mode by pressing and holding the Volume down and Bixby buttons together and inserting the USB cable from a switched off state. Also could you post a pic of the screen when you are in download mode.
Also could you install the Device Info Samsung app from the playstore? That will give you definitive info about the genuineness of your device.

Hej...
Maybe You can download app called "DevCheck Hardware and System Info" and see exactly what kind of hardware You have inside Your device...
Or this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo
Besides this, according to picture which You provide, it looks like kind of clone for Samsung devices...
Or i can be wrong...
By the looks of it, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you do not have the Samsung Note 9, or even a Samsung phone at all. It looks to be a clone. The CPU doesn't make sense, the display resolution is wrong, there's no warranty bit, bootloader info is unknown, etc. None of it makes sense for a real Samsung device. The reason you are having an issue with the pen is because there is likely no support in this device for a pen. I hope you didn't pay too much for this phone, and I am willing to bet you did not get this from an authorized Samsung retailer. Unfortunately, if I am right, there is no ROM out there that will solve your problem, and because you don't have an actual Samsung device, there will be no ROM here that will work for you. And because none of us know what device you actually have, none of us would be able to point you in the right direction. Sorry that this happened to you.

@sputnik767 and @terpi74 I had an idea that it was fake but you have to go into the brains to check if I could get a ROM to get the S-Pen working even then I doubt it.
I will get my money back on it anyway so aint fussed about it.
but just needed reassurance from youse guys
thanks again

I don't think so then You will be able to find ROM with working S-Pen... You will be lucky if You find any proper ROM for that devices...
Get your money back as soon as possible. Get a genuine device and you can use the S-Pen
