Note 8 unlocked ?? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Greetings,
Just received my new SM-N950U Note 8. Question is the box says it is a AT&T model but the software is T-Mobile. Baseband is N950USQS5CRK1 if it matters. Is that how it is supposed to be? I thought I was getting a factory unlocked Note 8.
Pat

The N950U is indeed the At&T model of the Note 8. However the seller may have unlocked the device so you can use any carriers SIM in it.

Branded and unlocked are two different things. You can buy a branded Note 8 which is unlocked, no issue.

It was advertised as a factory unlocked model. I just thought it would not have T-mobile software. I actually am on T-mobile so it's not a big deal I was just curious.

The unlocked model will install carrier software and splash screen by knowing what sim card you use. If you take it out and put in a different sim, it will magically change.

You're half right. The carrier models will do that. But if you're running the unlocked U1 firmware, it will not change any boot animation, splash screen, or add carrier apps. It will provision the SIM card for that carrier, but it will remain unbranded with no bloat.

You didn't get what you paid for. If it was advertised as "factory unlocked," and you got an ATT model that's false advertising. ATT models are carrier locked from the factory. They can be unlocked after paying them off through ATT.
They could TECHNICALLY get away with selling you a Verizon model and calling it factory unlocked, since they are unlocked from the factory, but that's still deceptive.
If you're happy, then no harm no foul. But if you really want a U1 model, then you'd have an argument for an exchange or refund.

Thanks for all the info. I am happy with the phone. It is performing as expected. I was just surprised to find the T-mobile app & boot animation when I got it. I really like it so far. My next step is do some more reading & see of I could flash a carrier free unlocked firmware. That's for another day though.

You can. There's a guide for doing it. But to put it simply, download the U1 firmware with the SamFirm tool. Then flash it with patched ODIN 3.13.1.

Yes that's why. Starting with Oreo on the Note 8 (and some late Nougat builds on the S8/+) Samsung software will automatically switch carrier versions to match your SIM card. Manually flashing carrier firmware when changing SIMs is no longer necessary.

Are you referring to carrier rebranding that the note 8 "U" models used to do? If so , I don't believe the note 9 "U" models are so far capable of this.
With rebranding/brandswitching I'm referring to when I switched my Note 8 sim card from a T-Mobile to Sprint SIM then the device would change the device into a completely Sprint branded Note 8 , Inc bootup logo etc.

Hey, Limey! Yeah that's what I'm referring to. That's weird the Note 9 can't do that. I always thought it was cool to pop my ATT SIM in my Note 8 and watch it completely change to an ATT device, then back again.
I'm looking for a Note 9 now to possibly upgrade. Can we not do carrier switching at all now? I know a Verizon or ATT Note 9 would work on TMo, but I don't want to see the VZW or ATT splash screens. I guess I could just flash the U1 firmware.

Flashing the U1 firmware works. I did this with my Verizon Note 9 and it changed everything to the U1 including the model number. I'm pretty sure you can flash any carriers firmware as well.

Hey buddy, good to see you on here. Hopefully see more of you soon when you get the Note 9.
I also found it weird that the unlocked carrier branded Note 9's didn't have this feature, going by the S9 I don't think they do that either. I think it was just the note 8 and s8, but I could be wrong that had that capability.
What region/type note 9 are you looking at buying ? Cheers.

Yes correct , flashing works. But on the Note 8 carrier branded SIM unlocked versions one could switch SIM cards from different USA carriers and the device would automatically reconfigure rebrand itself to the inserted SIM card carrier firmware. Was a wonderful thing

Yes , that made carrier switching much easier than having to flash the firmware and possibly resetting.

I actually just bought a nearly new, mint Verizon Note 9 off eBay. Guy listed it for $690, and I had $63 in eBay bucks, so it was a no brainer. Well, as long as it's actually mint, paid off, and clean IMEI as described. I'll find out when it gets here.
I flash the U1 firmware, stick my T-Mo SIM in it, then flash the T-Mo firmware and see what happens. God, I miss the automatic carrier switching.

Sorry for the novice question. I've been out of the world of rooting since I had my Note 5 so I'm kinda starting completely over.
I have an unlocked Note9 with the Snapdragon processor and I'm trying to get wifi calling to work on AT&T. From what I gather, AT&T has blocked that on unlocked phones.
Can anyone tell me if I root the phone and load the SM-N960U ATT firmware from above, will I then be able to use wifi calling? It should basically be a completely rebranded AT&T phone at that point, correct?
Another question related to that... Even though I would have the AT&T Firmware on it, I assume I would NOT get OTA updates from AT&T because the phone is rooted, correct?
Thanks for your time and putting up with this "noob's" questions.

The US version of the phone has no root.
To change and successfully run from one carrier to the other.
1. Flash U1 ROM with sim card of desired carrier
2. Boot up
3.Flash U ROM of the carrier with userdata in the patched odin
That should make it carrier branded

Convert Verizon Note 9 to AT&T Note 9

Is it possible to convert via firmware update a Verizon sim unlocked N960U to fully branded AT&T N960U to get wifi calling and all the other branded features from AT&T? Right now I am using AT&T sim but when my device boots up it shows Verizon and all the Verizon stuff is there. Thoughts.....

Thanks I figured it out.
Just in case someone stumbles on this thread I will post the solution.
You will need to flash the US Unlocked version of the phone then flash which ever carrier you want.
Just for clarification purposes, are you saying that once you flash the ATT firmware onto a Verizon device that all ATT functions work? Or did you have to also provision the IMEI to achieve this as well.?

sorry for the late reply. But I was able to achieve everything working on my device now. Brief description of what I did to get everything to work:
1. flash unlocked firmware
2. flash att firmware (not unlocked)
3. put sim in another AT&T branded phone
4. Call AT&T have them activate and provision everything on account as normal
5. Put sim in note 9 and activate wifi calling feature
6. DONE you now have a fully fuctional AT&T device, I even got an update from their servers.
I can go into more detail of the steps if needed.

I am looking for the AT&T firmware. I am currently in Kuwait and destroyed my phone. I had to buy an unlocked Note 9 version with the exynos cpu. The problem is I can't WIFI call or use any of the Volte functions my other phone had. Does anyone have the firmware for AT&T? Will that only work with snapdragon? I have already rooted this phone and it is ready to go. I need these functions so I can call back to the States.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like I need to wait for Detonator to come out with the AT&T zip. It says coming soon so hopefully soon is in the next couple of weeks. That looks like the best route to go. This is the first phone I have ever rooted. I work with networks and sometimes software kicks me in the butt!

Since this will be the 1st phone you'll have rooted, be aware that, especially with Samsung devices, there's a couple of trade-offs that aren't reversible:
1) Samsung Pay will never work even if you unroot.
2) Knox features (I believe) are also a casualty.
There's an e-fuse, for lack of a better word, that once tripped on Samsung devices, cannot be reset. That's why even if you restore the phone to its original condition, those things will be permanently gone.

Thanks for the info. I read up on all of that and the trade off is worth it. I just need all the Volte features and hopefully the correct frequencies for the U.S. I had a note 3 forever and it got destroyed. I loved that phone. This Note 9 is awesome but without being able to manipulate the IMS settings it is a PITA. I just want to be able to call home from time to time. Emailing the wife is no fun especially with the tech available today. I will keep an eye out for Detonator to provide the AT&T CSCs and all that fun stuff. Then this phone will officially be outstanding. I do have to admit that the rooting process was fun. I am all about modified anything. Stock sucks. LOL

Im not a phone guru like others on here. But from my experience that is all I did. A really important step I didn't mention is leave the cable PLUGGED IN when you flash the unlocked software then the locked software. This caused my device to read the "sim info" and provision its self for ATT and get rid of the verizon stuff and install the ATT stuff. Hope this helps you out.

Do I need to flash back to U1 unlocked firmware? When the buyer puts their Sim card in, will my current carrier (Cricket) splash screen remain or will it recognize their carrier and change?
If it is unlocked, the buyer can use with any carrier except cdma like verizon or sprint

Just flash back to U1, it is more desirable.
Actually I didn't even know why did you flash it for Cricket... An unlocked firmware works the same with them.

Because it allowed me to have wifi calling with some trickery. I have basically no service in my house.
WiFi calling is not supported by Cricket... officially.
If you didn't have signal, why kept the service? Total Wireless for example uses Verizon, their reach usually is greater.
Anyway, resale value is greater with original U1 firmware.
To do what you are hoping for.... Download The newest G973U USC firmware and flash that if you're selling it in the USA.... That way it switches apps and carrier bloat when a sim is changed... Otherwise flash G973U1
XAA firmware if your selling anywhere else.
If it was a g973u1, it might not work on verizon/sprint.... If it was a g973u, it should work on both no problem. Even an AT&T S10 can be activated on Sprint or Verizon as long as the IMEI is clean and clear.

SM-G973u1 snapdragon root

Sorry to just drop a question, but I can't find the answer. Can the snapdragon S10 SM-G973u1 bootloader be unlocked? If not is there another way to root it?
Thank you
Chris

I'm not sure that's true, but I would love to find out I'm wrong.
In my research, the SD phones cannot be unlocked unless you are on (and remain on) an older BL version. The last unlockable BL version was 4, as I recall... if you're running updated firmware you are likely on BL 6. Even on 4, the process was not free and once you did it you could not update to a newer version of FW without losing the unlock.
For this reason, I gave up on getting root/BLunlock on my phone... and honestly, I have not missed it. This is also why I have not seen much development of FW for the SD phones anywhere.
Again, if I'm wrong, I'd love to learn how it's done!
Hello meric57
Can you share a link to the firmware I need? I just bought this phone and there is no OEM unlock option, it is a US phone. If I cannot root it I will have to sell it and get another phone.
Thanks
Chris
I guess another question would be where can I get a S10 with the Exynos chip?
Thanks
Chris
Using ADB I keep getting "waiting for device" and then I find I need to unlock the bootloader. This crap is an endless circle.
U4 can be unlocked before , I can unlock it , Special engineering documents need to be made
I'm V6 nothing available. I bought a G973F instead. G973u1 going on ebay.
Exactly, there is really no root/unlock for snapdragon phones unless you're on a very old BL (and you have to stay there so you can't update). IMO, that's not "can be unlocked" even with "special" steps, particularly since most phones today will have newer BLs (even a year ago, I couldn't find a BL4 phone)... but, yes, it's technically true to say it can be unlocked, but only in very limited cases.
@Chris33333 For this reason, I get that you may want to go to the Exynos instead... I'm curious, if you're in the US, how does that work with carriers? Does it? I've found most US carriers refuse to activate phones that don't match their list of "compatible" IMEIs... I imagine an F-series phone won't be on that list.
I'm in the US using Straight Talk with T-mobile. I've had a Galaxy S5 rooted for years. With straight talk I can use AT&T, T-mobile, or Verizon. But this international phone does not do Verizon.
And StraightTalk will activate the F-series phone without complaint or issues? If so, that's great to hear... because I know VZ and ATT typically won't...
I haven't put the SIM in it yet. Still trying to delete all the crap off the phone.
Lol
Hello Chris33333, https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s10/firmware/SM-G973U1/XAA/

Question T-Mobile version to Global... Best route currently?

I am looking for the best way to convert my T-Mobile model to the Global version... I'm guessing via Fastboot and fastbootd mode? I've seen a few threads on here but was slightly confused as some people said it worked and some say it didn't? Please advise
Same
Careful, there's no way back unless you pay someone shady. Make sure you are fully network unlocked, because the unlock tool doesn't exist on global
The best way is to buy a global version
Buy it? Is that a thing that happens now?

Are you aware of one that works?

No. Check out the other threads on MSM work, it's not pretty.
I've retired my op10, don't have to deal with oppo anymore
Yeah, flashing away from TMobile is possible with the full Downgrade zips iirc. But there's no way back to NE2217, so be careful. I can confirm my NE2215 works great on TMobile but I bought mine from Best Buy, fully unlocked, global edition.
EDIT: Two people have Qualcomm crash dumped now in this thread, it seems the TMO variant (NE2217) does not like to be flashed away in traditional methods.
I'm sure flashing to NE2215 wouldn't harm service, but why would you want to when NE2217 seems to get similar support for now?

Dual sim and not T-Mobile bloat. Do you know where to get the full downgrade zips?

Dual-Sim doesn't work with NE2215 from what I know, that's an NE2213/1/0 specific feature. Although NE2215 has the contacts for it, I don't think you can actually use the dual sim. Pretty sure the conclusion reached was the 2215 doesn't have a second IMEI from Manufacture.
EDIT: Just googling "OnePlus 10 Pro Downgrade Android 13 to Android 12" You'll find the full rollback zips. There's 3, NA, INDIA, and EU.

What should I use in the US?

Use NA in the US. But as the other's have said, you won't get dual SIM. If you have already SIM Unlocked your device and won't need to go back to 2217 for any reason, then go for it.
Is the process the same as other models?
If that is the case then why would anyone want to go back to a T-Mobile variant?
Surely the main benefit to change region would be to get timely updates and not be isolated with a rarer model.
I'm just curious as I've had carrier locked devices before and the first thing I did was to change it. In the end I sent my device off to get fixed (unrelated issue) they sent me the unlocked version for my country, I guess being rarer is prevalent not her on XDA but with oppo too.

As I've stated, if you didn't unlock your SIM from T-Mobile (these come locked), you will never be able to unlock it without TMobile rom if you end up on global.

So if the user isn't in the need to change sim carrier then that's fine then isn't it..
I'll ask again, is the process for changing region the same?
Bare in mind this isn't for me, I'm in the UK

Boot unlocked sim/network unlocked and rooted with magisk using the boot image for the NE2215.

Does sim unlock and network unlock mean the same thing?

Yep.
If it's the same as the UK, the network has to unlock the phone for you to other sims, usually in the shape of a code you enter..
May be different in the US
Bootloader unlock is a code that you have to get from Oneplus (Token) and you have to have the carrier (T-mobile) unlock the network and they are very reluctant to do it. You have to have paid off the device and have had to be a customer for some time.

Then that would be required prior to changing region... I'm not sure why the region would be a requirement to unlock the device to other networks.
May be worth asking the method used for unlocking the device to other networks.
I got them to unlock my network while I'm still paying for the device, I don't want to rock the boat. I'm sure if anyone other than the guy who did it they would lock it down again.
