Hello, I am wondering if safe strap will be available for the note 9 u versions. Doesn't that work with locked boot loaders so we can still have custom ROMs and mods?

so yeah probably you have alot of catching up to do.
basically put, safe strap exploit is no more. and the future of using it again to root/custom recovery a QC snapdragon is looking bleak since the s8( root worked for only 3 or 4 months)
of course you could do yourself a favor and just get an international version instead. But note 9 development is slowing down.. it never got off to the same point as the previous models did.
Ok thanks for explaining

I've been a google phone user since they started, and messed with a couple others but not really...
Will this phone be as open as I'm used to in regards to ROMs? Do they lock the bootloader like I had a my Xperia?
Exynos version (international) will likely see ROMs. Snapdragon version (US carriers) will not. We'll be lucky if we get root.

why is that ?
Because Snapdragon is a locked bootloader. Without some kind of luck, leak or flaw there will be no root. At best, disable the update package with BK disabler so you won't take any updates in the hope that there is a flaw which allows us to root.
Cant wait to get twrp .... Only minimal changes must done from s8 to n8
Exynos is king Stay with the [F] variant and you will be fine (SM-N950F or SM-N950FD)
I have the 256gb Korean version, are the Korean models usually compatible with other roms (i would have went for the 64 gb FD but the price difference wasn't that big so i went with bigger storage
Well guess I'll send mine back and get an unlocked phone

Exactly my thought. Just like the S7 to Note 7, very easy to root, twrp and ROM.
I am just going to wait for all that to be done lol.

thanks. I didn't know that. My Snapdragon dual SIM on top of a micro SD slot N9100 was rooted but no good custom ROM [ unfortunately ]. always watching for a newer and better version of AMOLED, dual SIM AND microSD, stylus, removable battery for years now. skipped 5, 7 and may skip 8 as well. especially if there is no root and no TWRP. 4 is still running strong.

Thank you - exactly what I wanted to know.
I am curious about the future of the Note 8 of being able to have a custom ROM as a daily Driver. The Snapdragon version not the exynos. Thoughts?
Yeah, there is a Note8 roms section. You can check it out every day.

It's very doubtful we'll be having any fun with the Snapdragon variants. No root, no unlocked bootloader, no TWRP recovery.

No root? When did that happen. There is a SAMFail root for the Snapdragon in the section below this one.
Hasn't the no custom stuff been a thing for a while?
Haven't had a Samsung phone since note 4.
Just wondering if the xposed firmware rovo released is supported on Note8 snapdragon US/CAN variant.
If so.
Has anyone has tried on the note 8 an got it working with no issues please let me know.
Nope. The development stopped along time ago for Snapdragon Xposed.

Soooo.... the note 8 is just not supported for xposed or. Does one need to update to some other custom Rom or something in order to Install xposed on the note 8 .
There are 2 different models of note 8. Snapdragon and Exynos. You can download Xposed if you have the Exynos version of the note 8. However, you can't do the same if you have the Snapdragon version of the note 8.

So do I need to start a bounty for the note 8 snapdragon or something. I'm sure there's alot of people willing to pay @rovo89 or @me2151 to get xposed working on snapdragon. ? I myself would offer 100 dollars to have it working on my note 8. An I'm sure if i started a thread for Canadian an US variants with note 8 snapdragon there would be alot more cash involved . Or is it just impossible.?
let's get oreo first.

Oreo comes after snapdragon. Why skip the people who rooted before Oreo came out. ?
Lol
waste of efforts to try and get snapdragon nougat working when oreo is where eveything is at. the whole reason why initially nougat almost never got xposed is that by the time a stable working version was available, oreo was going to be mainstream and all those efforts should go towards a current OS.
edit:
grant it, somebody got their hands on the partially working nougat build and made it work(exynos) a that time so you never know... but again, oreo should be the main focus i think.
Still no way to get Xposed on our Snapdragon Note 8's? I saw something mentioned about flashing a modified stock firmware, but I can't find anymore about this, and if it would even allow Xposed.
Just a question: which is the Snapdragon version? Is it the 9500?
I'm thinking about buying a new Note 8, and Xposed will be welcome.
Thanks!

I don't think there's really anything new on the Note9 worth porting. The only really big feature is one that likely won't work on our devices, anyway. Most of what's new, we might get with our 8.1 update, anyway.

what are you talking about man, the price difference between the 2 phones are so narrow , and roms are made for people to keep their phones so what's the point of buying a new s9 or note 9 and install new roms on them??
maybe i didn't get what you meant but phones as note 3 and 4 are still getting S9 custom roms from developers!!!! why will devs move to new devices that don't need anything!!!
Will the note 9 Rom enable dex without dex dock needed for our note 8 that would be great

U should just take a look at what is going on around before such a brave statement. Most of good and best devs are upgrading their devices accordingly to their released. And I simply can tell U is it worth - my N8 was rooted 3h after I bought brand new but few days with stock firmware. And it was really surprising for me (but this is new device effect). But after 2 weeks...it became 2x faster, 2x efficient and longer lasting on single battery cycle. Sorry - for me (and most of people here I guess) most important is freedom! In customizations, apps, root access, firmware or rather custom ware.... If U don't feel it, U simply in a wrong place?
Hi ,
Am working note 9 port for note 8 , very hard to port beacuse not same android version and hardware s9 same hardware and may be easy to port , i need just help kernel porter devs, i write a lot of kernel devs but zero answer dunno why...
I try port kernel but i see for kernel my experiance is sufficient..
I need to kernel devs for help..may be someone back to me for help kernel..
Best regards.

I have a general question about custom kernels.... Is a custom kernel specific to a device?
So can I currently install e.g. FrancoKernel or do I have to wait until it is supported...

A kernel is always highly device specific. It includes the low level interface to the hardware and as such needs the correct drivers for the individual hardware..
HIGHLY DEVICE SPECIFIC. I ran Franco for years on my Nexus devices but he'll never support a device he doesn't have and he'll never own one of these phones. Amazing Dev though. You can use his app still with these phones if you want to check it out

Why do you say he will never own one of these phones? He develops for pocophone, Redmi Note 3 and 4.

My mistake, its been a long time since I've checked in with Franco stuff :good:
Not only are custom kernels device specific but if you are unfortunate enough to own a device from XDA darlings One Plus there are separate kernels for Oxygen and non Oxygen based ROMs because there is so much code in Oxygen that veers from stock Android--in spite of the fact that reviewers always claim Oxygen is as close to stock Android as you can get. In reality Oxygen is as far as you can get from stock Android without buying an iPhone.
In spite of all the grumbling about MIUI and EMUI neither actually requires a kernel that won't boot up custom Android ROMs on the same phone.
I think that Mi9 will never get nice custom kernel. Mi9 SE has some, any SD855 has but not Mi9.. Dunno why. Kernel code was leaked before launching Mi9 sale.
Is any Dev working on some kernel??
