Hey everyone, I know it's probably too soon, but do we know yet if the bootloader can be unlocked after an Exynos N950F is upgraded to Pie through the official OTA update? What I want to know is: If I let this update happen, will I be unable to unlock and do custom roms after? Is it better to unlock while on Oreo and then update via custom roms only, etc.?
I haven't unlocked my Note 8 yet (only had it 1.5 months), but I want to keep my option to do so open.
Thanks.

may be u should first root by stock kernal which is rooted flashing
Exynos varianst do not have a locked bootloader, never have.
You need OEM Unlock ticked in Developer options to be able to flash non-standard stuff. Once you load TWRP, and flash the stuff you want, as long as it has the RMM cleaning integrated, you'll be fine.
Many devs deliver bootloader/modem packages with the rom, mostly as a side package. Even if you came from Nougat, after flashing the bootloader/modem first, you'd be fine flashing the custom pie stuff after.

Nah, that's alright. I wish people would research more for their issues, but if we're are done tweaking our stuff, we might as well help others, even if we have to repeat it like 100x a week

Thanks for this info. Every other phone I've ever had, the bootloader was locked. I did do some searching first, and didn't find the info. I appreciate your help.

So currently I am on the G900A, and I have successfully rooted, installed safestrap, flashed the international XtreStoLite ROM. I also appeared to be able to flash the latest ktoonsez KT-SGS5. Wow am I impressed, HUGE thanks to all the crew at XDA, as always!!! My phone finally runs better than my old rooted Galaxy S2 Skyrocket!!! And significantly so, at that! However, I have a few questions. Under about device, in settings, my model reports as a G900F (incorrectly) and the build reports correctly updated, but the kernel reports as being the stock kernel, even though I don't believe this to actually true. Is it? My baseband is also reporting as G900AUCU1ANCE. The XtreStoLite should be based on XXU1ANG2 firmware, but I'm guessing this actually would not update. I did not update with the AT&T OTA, 'just in case'. If I did, I know a downgrade is 'probably' not possible. But is the update still venerable to the same process? Wouldn't that successfully put me on the latest AT&T firmware?

The bootloader blocked the install of the kernel. You still have the stock kernel and until the bootloader is unlocked we won't be able to successfully do this.

not sure on the specifics, kernel yes, and i believe the bootloader as well.
tshumski said:
I see, I did not realize that was an implication of locked bootloaders. Did the AT&T OTA update the kernel? Would work to put me on both the newest firmware and kernel? Does towelroot still work on it? Was it likely that the bootloader was updated, making it more difficult to break in the future?

I'm sure if I dig into the forums I will be able to find the answers I'm looking for buuut, I have a Exynox Note 8 SM-N950F, is there a way to root it with safety net not tripped and Knox not tripped?
I couldn't really care for Knox, but it gets rid of s-health and that's what I want
Thank You ??
I'd like to know which note 8 version to buy if I wish to root, rom, and unlock bootloader. Free bump OP cause I think we can both help each other get our answers.
There is no way to root without tripping Knox, but there is a patch to bring s health back after rooting

Exynos is best for all that, since bootloader is unlocked and roms are being developed. Lots of reading still for you...particularly the OEM unlock thread .
Until today there's no way of rooting without tripping the Knox

No patch to bring back Samsung Pay after tripping Knox as far as I know.
Yes if you want custom roms then Exynos is the best bet because of the unlocked bootloader. There are some exceptions with Snapdragon that also have unlocked bootloader, but most don't so they don't have as much development attention as Exynos. Unfortunately some Exynos have OEM Unlock issues which throw a bit of a wrench into things for some. Check out the OEM Unlock thread for details on that.

What a nightmare. I just read it. Typical Samsung fashion.
Sounds like SM-N950N is the only safe version where unlocked bootloader sticks and not thrown back in jail.
Hello all.
I just received an "unlocked" Sprint Note 8 cellphone N950U and Im a little confused.
I used to had a Note 4 that i flashed with a U firmware that removed all the bloatware, is this avaible for the Note 8?
Why arent custom roms or a stable root (magisk) avaible for this cellphone?
Had a lot of time retired from Samsung side (OnePlus guy here) but was stolen during a car accident that i had this weekend.
Thanks a lot and dont forget your safety belt while driving!

Note 8 is locked bootloader ....there will be no twrp for it until it's unlocked ....which probably won't ever happen .. root is available but not once it's updated past bootloader v3 ...it's the only phone I have had that I didn't root ....I have flashed the Oreo roms and the unlocked versions .... But there aren't any custom roms ...

Oreo has not been OFFICIALLY released for the Note8. There has been some leaked builds, but none for the unlocked U1 firmware. So if you want Oreo, you'll have to go with carrier firmware.

Now, seriously, all of your questions have been answered in detail, and in guides, here on XDA. I highly encourage you to use the search bar and do some research of your own.

You asked about unlocked firmware. That would be U1 firmware.
Hello, I have some questions about this phone, it will be long ...
My old Xperia XZ died after a foamy party ... so I bought this phone, and it's pretty cool.
So I would now go to android 8, surely LineageOS or EMUI8 I do not know yet.
So, do I really need to rebrand my phone for project treble?
Some links say no, some Rom allow activating treble, and other links say that you have to go through the official Rom EMUI8
I have to use EMUI recovery or TWRP?
Where can I find EMUI8 for Huawei?
How do I unlock my boot loader?
because the links I found his death ...
It was a lot easier on Xperai: D
Thank you for your help, as much on Xperia I know everything but there I am lost with this different recovery, with EMUI ... with the trick honor / Huawei
And I'm french, so not sure that I'm very readable, do not hesitate to tell me
Hi,
Just wait a little bit it should be Rolling soon in all countries officially (UK, Spain among others countries already got it so it might be soon for France )
If you're really in hurry there are multiple guides here that explains different ways to update manually. Not sure though if you can still unlock the bootloader...
Salut!

Hi this is my 1st ever Xiaomi phone always had Samsung
Love the phone it's mint
I'm confused when it comes to updates and all the different kind of versions to the roms
And reading some comments about ota updates I'm just confused as hell lol
So I'm in UK on Vodafone im
On miui 12.0.2 stable global
How do I get 12.5 update please as it doesn't show for me
Do you have to manually flash all updates ?
How do I know if my bootloader is locked?
How do I safely update /flash phone ?
If I flash phone will that void warranty?
Will my bank apps and Google pay work as I need Google pay ?
What is the best version to flash people and do some roms have better features to use than the 1 I'm already on ?
Sorry for being dumb I'm just scared to do things wrong
Thanks for taking time to read this and if you have spare time to reply and guide me I'd be ever so grateful. Can't imagine ever going back to Samsung I just love this phone

Vodafone unfortunately doesn't let you OTA apply to any other firmware. You got to unlock bootloader.

Starting from halfway down!
If your phone is new, the bootloader is locked.
How to safely flash? Read the threads on unlocking the bootloader. There is very little risk provided you have learned how to do it (and not much risk even if you don't).
Warranty. I don't know. But you can always reflash stock firmware and relock the bootloader.
Most people who unlock flash Xiaomi.eu ROM. It is what I use. It's based on the Chinese firmware but heavily modified.
Banking apps and google pay work just fine
