Hello all.
I just received an "unlocked" Sprint Note 8 cellphone N950U and Im a little confused.
I used to had a Note 4 that i flashed with a U firmware that removed all the bloatware, is this avaible for the Note 8?
Why arent custom roms or a stable root (magisk) avaible for this cellphone?
Had a lot of time retired from Samsung side (OnePlus guy here) but was stolen during a car accident that i had this weekend.
Thanks a lot and dont forget your safety belt while driving!

EDIT: Never mind... wrong link if you want to root the phone. This is your only option to root on snapdragon. I would suggest you read through that thread.

Note 8 is locked bootloader ....there will be no twrp for it until it's unlocked ....which probably won't ever happen .. root is available but not once it's updated past bootloader v3 ...it's the only phone I have had that I didn't root ....I have flashed the Oreo roms and the unlocked versions .... But there aren't any custom roms ...

Oreo has not been OFFICIALLY released for the Note8. There has been some leaked builds, but none for the unlocked U1 firmware. So if you want Oreo, you'll have to go with carrier firmware.

The only way to MAYBE flash ROMS is still in ALPHA testing and it is not a true flash but a way to load ROMS and fake the boot system.
Currently there is no way to flash ROMS to this phone.

From what i saw in the thread about safe strap the ROMS have to be tweaked to work with safestrap so only ROMS developed around safestrap will work.. Even then it is still iffy if they will fully work.

Solarenemy68's reply seemed easy to understand to me. Are you having difficulty understanding it? In case you did not understand it...you can NOT flash ANY rom on the att N3. None. Zip. Nadda. Nothing. The bootloader is locked. Without an unlocked bootloader, you are not currently able to flash a new rom. If you do, you will brick your N3. Period.
If you want to flash new roms on a N3, you should have purchased a T-Mo N3 as that bootloader was not locked.
I hope this clarifies things for you.

Wow! Bad day at work?
We can flash roms using safe strap recovery by @Hashcode . It works fine and even gives you "multi boot" that most devices would die for!
Roms are coming already and things are getting good. International roms can be ported. T-Mobile roms run without much of a fuss.
We CANNOT flash bootloader, kernels, or modems. But with a locked bootloader this is about as good as it gets.
If your going to give someone information, at least give them correct information.

Didn't have a bad day. Didn't intend to sound rude. Your signature indicates that you have a N9005 not a N900A. If I am mistaken, please correct me. I've had a N900A since launch day and have been following the development quite closely, I thought. While the N9005 and the N900T have unlocked bootloaders, I have not seen anything other than alpha testing for the N900A, and @Hashcode has not yet released Safestrap for the N900A.
Please post some links for loading roms onto the N900A, or apologize as it is you that seems to be providing the incorrect information that can potentially damage someone's device. If you are correct about SAFELY flashing roms onto the n900A, I will post an apology to you and the OP.
Thank you.

I do indeed apologize. SS became available on the 16th and the first flashable rom became available yesterday. I missed both.
Apparently, roms are now flashable via SafeStrap. My apologies to the OP as well.

I know there's a root method out already, but I prefer to hold off given the potential limitations (especially the battery 80% issue).
Based on your experience, do you think there will be a better root method coming out soon?
Thanks!

What that means is no one has been able to find a workaround (engineering or otherwise) or not smart enough to figure it out yet and they're not clairvoyant enough to know if anyone can in the future. But I think it's a great question that I had actually been wondering myself.

Soon? absolutely not. I recommend backing up your stuff using samsung cloud and trying the root to see how it affects you. Exynos has a Unlocked BL HOWEVER it does not work on CDMA carriers.

if you get exynos there's a chance you'll have the issue where you have to wait 7 days to unlock your bootloader, you can get the korean version which comes unlocked out of box.
If you're not looking to deal with this kind of risk then go for pixel line, one plus 5\5t when it comes out, not sure what else really, the essential phone should have unlocked bootloader and roms soon as they've promised to release the source code and image files.

Hey everyone, I know it's probably too soon, but do we know yet if the bootloader can be unlocked after an Exynos N950F is upgraded to Pie through the official OTA update? What I want to know is: If I let this update happen, will I be unable to unlock and do custom roms after? Is it better to unlock while on Oreo and then update via custom roms only, etc.?
I haven't unlocked my Note 8 yet (only had it 1.5 months), but I want to keep my option to do so open.
Thanks.

Exynos varianst do not have a locked bootloader, never have.
You need OEM Unlock ticked in Developer options to be able to flash non-standard stuff. Once you load TWRP, and flash the stuff you want, as long as it has the RMM cleaning integrated, you'll be fine.
Many devs deliver bootloader/modem packages with the rom, mostly as a side package. Even if you came from Nougat, after flashing the bootloader/modem first, you'd be fine flashing the custom pie stuff after.

Thanks for this info. Every other phone I've ever had, the bootloader was locked. I did do some searching first, and didn't find the info. I appreciate your help.
Greetings All!
Relative noob here... Appropriate patience appreciated. I started the year buying a new-to-me Canadian Rogers SM-N950W already upgraded to Oreo (n950wvls5crl1). To my dismay, it looks like because of that update I cannot get root.
Now with my phone (unlocked and running on Bell) offering up the Pie update, I'm wondering whether I should accept. Is there a chance that root will come along for Oreo, and Pie will be just another obstacle to that? Or is root access just not in the cards for this phone, so I should take my Pie and be happy?
Any input appreciated.
Bump
It is my understanding that (just like all the North American Snapdragon variants) you will never be able to root under current ways. Anything higher than bootloader 3 will not be rootable as the loopholes were closed with the higher upgrades. You might as well enjoy the new software upgrades.

I bought a Note 9 from Amazon I thought it was an official AT&T phone but it is the unlocked version. My unlocked version does not support a number of AT&T's features I would like to have access too. I have read how to flash the Rom and I know how to do it. I downloaded a Rom which I thought was the AT&T stock rom but it was actually the same Rom I had the unlocked version. So when I flashed it it was the same as before. I think it is possible it flash the phone so that it is like I bought it from AT&T. I have seen people do this on youtube with their Galaxy note 10's. I am unable to find the Official Stock Rom or maybe I have and am unsure if it is the official one. So if anyone knows where I can get the dang official Rom so I can flash my unlocked phone and turn it into an official AT&T phone that would really help me. Thank you very much.

in fact that DID answer your question.
in sammobile, you could find your "carrier" rom version as you want, which is U, not U1 (unlock version).
then use samfirm or frija to download the rom with max speed.

So If I want to flash it too the official AT&T I should look for SM-N96OU instead of SM-N96OU1, correct? I am nervous about bricking the phone. I have read that the AT&T version and the unlocked phones are exactly the same they just have different firmware. Is this true?

I'm looking to convert my SM-N960U1 (unlocked) to the AT&T version as well. I'm seeing the following as the lastest firmware I should be downloading to convert to AT&T. Can anyone verify this because the N960U does not have AT&T firmware available?
...firmware/SM-N960U1/ATT/download/N960U1UEU4DTC7/335086/
All the U firmware is the same. If you have At&t sim you can flash any Note 9 U firmware and it will provision to your sim. If you are coming from U1 you will need to do a factory wipe. Was your device purchased as unlocked or was it U?....
Oops never mind I see its unlocked.

For some reason i feel that Sammobile its more about selling firmware software to buyers of samsung instead of helping people take the best out of their phones. Some of use pay over the 1000 dollar for a phone and dont get easy help while samsung should atleast give us the freedom to get the firmwares for our devices for free. Sam mobile has ablot of information on their website, but ofcourse nothing for free. Even signing up their websites is an issue, and to get support thats another issue. So i most say Sam mobile its all about selling Samsung software, while you and me who buy the phones, not sammobile! Resell it back to us. Seriously its discrimination in my eyes. Maybe am wrong, but thats how i feel about. Now i dont know what business relation sammobile has with samsung, but i know the founder is not a. Chinese, but a Holland guy. Thank u.
