Looking to find a USB hub for my phone. I see a ton of them online, and some of them even kinda say they work with phones. But I know not all of them do. Looking for one that can output HDMI and has at least one USB-A input (two would be nice, but not a deal breaker). I do realize it'll probably require PD input, that's not a problem. [email protected] would be my preference too as a minimum. The goal is to use my phone as a portable gaming device, so I'm hoping to have low input lag for the wired controller.
My hope is somebody has found a decent one that they've tried with this phone and works. Would also accept testimony from people who have tried it on the V30, or any other flagship USB-C Android phone that isn't Samsung (they use DeX, I need no feedback on that).
So... Anybody got any personal experience to share on this topic? Realize it's kind of a tall order, but I'm hoping somebody has found one that works and is reasonably priced.
I too would like to know this if anyone has some info on it. At the moment i have tried 2 different docks, the Alogic USB-C Dock Plus which is just plain **** to say the least, if you connect the charger and HDMI it will eventually crash the systemui freezing you completely. The other dock i have tried is a Satechi Slim Multi_Port Adapter which works to HDMI but does'nt charge the device at all even though it has a charger slot for it & chargers my other phones fine plugged in via the same cable.
MS Display Dock
I have used a Microsoft Display Dock, has 2 USB A-Ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, & charges simultaneously. The Razer Phone work fine with it (TESTED), but honestly the phone seems to be capable of being compatible with any Hub save the ones for the Nintendo Switch. Being that the Microsoft Display Dock is discontinued & old, you can probably find good bargains from 30$ or more. While it is name brand and, from personal experience, its a well built piece of tech, you might want to consider how you plan to listen to your device, and think about adapters with Aux-out if you plan to used wired headphones.
I was goofing around at work and we have these USB c travel adapters that have a USB, HDMI, Ethernet, and vga out, but can't charge at the came time. Upon further goofing around I plugged in Dell WD15 dock, bingo, full output on everything. Comes with a charger so it charges, Ethernet, display port, vga, USB ports. They run about 130 on Amazon right now. Plugged in our projector to it, then some external speakers, Bluetooth my gamepad to it. Loaded my some emulators and I was playing Mario kart while taking some support calls.

Just normal rom with some extra programs.
I'm looking (maybe manny other people) for a female ipod adapter to (micro/mini) usb. There are a lot of (music)docking stations for the ipod but nothing with a micro usb connection. so with a adapter from a female ipod too a micro.mini usb we have tons of interesting accesories.
I hope sombody can help me and others.

Useless. All you could do is charge the phone and connect to a PC with USB cable. No sound, no video, no extra functions as those use extra connections and proprietary protocols that only the iphone has.
pretty much agree with kilrah, even if in theory some accessories geared towards just the audio could benefit from a ipod->microusb+jack solution, even if that would be ugly
Reality is, ipod/iphone specific accessories are 90% for "happy people" (read carefully through the words), and a hd2 user true to himself doesn't want those

if the HD2 had all the endlessly possible amount of accesories like the iphone, i wouldn't want a HD2.
i like the exclusivity(?) of my HD2, i like that some people find the sheer size of the HD2 offensive, i like the looks on their faces when i show them how much better it is than an iphone.
with accesories comes more customers looking for the latest fad, i dont want that. if i want an accesory, i'll make it myself

both my hd2 and my bluetooth headset use the same micro usb, so i only need one wall charger and one car charger...
i use bluetooth to play audio through my car headunit, a jack to phono cable for playing on my home hifi, bluetooth again with sideshow or g-remote to control my media pc's...
i dont really see the need for another cable based on what the hd2 is capable of...wireless options are always going to be better

and no i wouldnt want a bose sound dock, mainly because of the ridiculous price and also due to the national grid already struggling to provide my house with enough juice to power the gear i have already lol

i got a cradle that has audio connector and it's connected to Z5500 logitech, i wonder which sounds better. LOL
Just wondering, since some of the newer tablets let you hook up mini usb devices to it and so. Was wondering if there had been any adapters yet or so for us streak 7 users? Would be cool to get a wired controller hooked up and so.
You would need an OTG cable to do that, as dell doesnt make any you will have to make your own or use the HDMI dock.
Well I have the HDMI Dock, so I could use the dock then insert the usb device to that? Was thinking about getting that Logitech F710 with that usb dongle, heard it had support for android. What else would I need? Or hows that work fully.
As for the non dock part, has anyone made a cable yet to work?
if your device had a usb-a connector you have no choice then but to make a cable.
the sixaxis/ds3 uses a mini usb connector and might work though usb,
I know it and the wiimote will work over bt, with the wiimote being the easier to pair one.
Well I have the wiimote working fine, Issue there is.. Yea.. Battery drain on that remote. So figured maybe getting a adapter. I guess I need a USB to Mini micro usb? (The new style mini usb thing.. man I miss the old big RAZR size ones) How many of you have used a HID device or so on android or the streak 7?
you'd need to splice together the dock connector to preferably a USB-A female port, it'd be the most useful as you'd have a cable that could accept anything, but it'd mean you'd always need a minimum of 2 cables.
You'd also have to dissemble to dock connector itself i believe as the OTG pins are different from what's wired in the normal sync/charge cables, you cant simply cut the cable and rewire it, you'd prob have to cut the dock connector open and resolder
If you made a dock to micro usb connector it'd only accept devices that have a micro usb port on it.
Keep in mind usb mode means that the controller would be drawing power from the device itself, while controllers dont draw that much, it's still something to point out

Would take the normal size usb dongle or cord, fits into the USB slot of the dock itself.
I havnt actually tried it but it sounds like that should work, i know that port is designed for otg connections so i'd assume it'd take care of the hard work.
When on 2.2.2 Did I need a special program for this to work? I know 3.x had native support. Just wondering. =) (Or can any game/emulator with key remapping auto detect)

So what's the verdict guys? Can a controller or other USB device be connected to the mini USB port on the docking station and work? So far my verdict is nada.. dont think its supplying power to the usb ports. Now its been said that adapter based ones may work, something where controller is powered by batteries. Tho again. No one ever gives a real confirm.
My next area to branch out is http://www.onlive.com/controller 50$ but you can use a adapter for the pc. However it also works with bluetooth, something that the tablet DOES support and no adapter needed. Since I have the onlive app, least it will work 100% for THAT. Once my tax money comes in, Ill order the controller and see if it can work on emulators and so too. least then we will have 1 solid answer that has some good use. (Since honestly, onlive on the tablet really isnt bad at all!)
Why not bluetooth your ps3 controller though the sixaxis app on the market thats what I've done works great

To answer both. If I am not mistaken. PS3 controllers have to be "paired". Which means when you wanna play PS3 or Tablet.. got to re-pair them all the time, correct?
Wii-Motes I know you dont have to re-pair them. However.. one thing I hate... that to use the classic controller.. you need to have the Wiimote laying around somewhere.. then the cable for classic. Seems bulky for normal use.
Both controllers all are battery too. Would be nice for wired solutions. If I do anything wireless, I may as well get that Onlive controller with BT support.
If you have a sixaxis/DS3 dedicated to non-ps3 use: you only have to re-pair it every time you want to use it on a different device.
The sixaxis/ds3 do work in usb mode, at least on pcs. I dont recall if there's a solution to use it in usb mode on android (though i'd imagine it should, as usb mode is trivial to enable)
If you only have a single device to use it with, you only ever need to pair it once and then you're done.
Well, I finally went and tried hooking up a usb hub to my S7, and my results were absolute failures.
I bought an OTG <-> dell 30 pin a while back and a standard OTG <-> dock cable.
I dont have a baseline as I dont know offhand which kernels are specifically tested to work.
It seems to enable the hub (by enable I mean it powers up on detection of a host, it's wall powered)
on my S5 with ICS/Phoenix kernal (which is known to support usb hosting), but nada on my S7 with ICS B4/mod and stock 514.
Can anyone explicitly confirm that the b4 and stock kernals work with host?
I'm pretty sure nothing is happening on either of those, and as it works fine on my S7 it's definitely not bad cables/hardware.
Edit: at least the S5 is even capable of powering the hub itself, and with a dock it can charge at the same time. If it wernt for the terrible HDMI out on it, it would be a full on android pc with the dock.
The S7 on the other hand: I still cant get anything, remotely powered or self powered: it gives no response
I can tell you, yes, ICS kernel does have otg drivers but may not provide power to those devices.

Anyways so I've been trying to hook my active up to my monitor -- an ASUS VX238H -- and I finally got the correct MHL to HDMI adapter, but I still can't get it to work and I've tried three different HDMI cables. With this Sypder C Class cable and this Belkin cable I have the phone would detect being plugged up to the HDMI, but the monitor wouldn't recognize it, and with this off brand cable when I plug it in my monitor goes black (and it has two HDMI inputs with my computer plugged into HDMI1 and the phone plugged into HDMI2). Is there a specific cable I need or perhaps cables without a specific feature (such as Ethernet)?
This is not intended to be a sarcastic response, but did you enable "Screen Mirroring"?

From what I read that was only needed for wireless connections and that HDMI connections didn't need that. Guess I'll give it a shot after work and see if that is the issue, but still I don't understand why the one cable would cause my monitor to go black despite me not having selected the HDMI2 input...
I have a cable left over from my Motorola Atrix 4G. I will give it a try tonight to see if I get any better results.

Ok so I tried enabling Screen Mirroring but it told me to disconnect the HDMI cable first. Guess I'll just have to wait till I get paid again and get a different HDMI cable to try with (one without Ethernet) and see if I have better results.
I was reading an article from pcmag about screen mirroring (Google "How to Connect Your Samsung Galaxy S 4 to Your TV"). It said something about using a specific MHL to HDMI connector and then connecting a separate HDMI cable and a power cable. I'm not sure why you would need all of the extra cables, especially the power cable. I would think that the digital audio and video signals would be low enough power that it would use less power than the backlight. Maybe there is something specific about the pinout of the Samsung USB that requires that particular cable. If I get a chance to try my other cable tonight, I will post the results. Good luck.

I had posted in the S4 QA section there are two different types of MHL-HDMI adapters.
A 5-pin variation for the older generation of phones like the S2 and the Infuse.
A 11-pin variation for the newer generation of phones like the S3 and S4.
The adapter does need some power to power it since it is an electronic device but not much. The rest of the power that's not used by the adapter is used to charge the phone.
I initially bought a 5-pin adapter because I didn't research enough before hand (it was a bit of an impulse buy) and so I didn't know there were two different types. I then bought an official Samsung MHL-HDMI 11-pin adpater which is what I've been using now.
I really think the issue is with the cables I'm trying to use so when I do get paid again I'm going to buy a HDMI cable with just the base A/V transfer and see if that works.
Please ignore what I said altogether. I assumed that I had a cable from my previous phone that would work for HDMI, but the cable that I have isn't even a USB connector. It has a completely different plug on it. I never used it on my last phone, and I didn't even remember the phone having two different plugs. Now, I am wanting to get the proper cable and try it. I have always thought that it would be cool to run XBMC on my phone.

That's the one I have now.
My cable came in today, and it works perfectly. It is the original Samsung (EPL-3FHUBEGSTA) MHL to HDMI cable. I noticed that they raised the price on ebay by $5.00. They can still be found for around $11 or $12 though. All I did was plug mine in to the phone, the power cable, and HDMI, and then, I selected "Screen Mirroring" in settings. The problem may be with you monitor. I have seen some monitors that do not connect with certain HDMI devices. I think it has something to do with supporting 1080i vs 1080p. I've never been able to test the theory, but at work we have a large plasma TV that very few devices (almost none) will connect to. I have found a few other, usually smaller, monitors that seem to do the same thing. Good luck.

Are you using a HDMI cable with Ethernet or just an A/V HDMI cable? All the HDMI cables I have have Ethernet except maybe my 360 HDMI cable. I'm going to order this other cable online and try with that and if it doesn't work then I'm just going to assume my monitor is like what you said. Just a fyi it's supposed to support 1080p.
Ok just thought I'd provide an update. I got the Belkin A/V (no Ethernet) cable in today and it too didn't work so I'm just going to chalk it up to my monitor not supporting the MHL signal. I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised since it is a computer monitor after all.

I am close to giving up on my brand new Galaxy Tablet - and this after spending a lot(!) of money on the whole setup.
For some weird, bizarre reason Samsung seems to have decided not to allow the PM-900 tablet to charge and use the USB data port at the same time.
Try as I may (and having spend over $50 on all kinds of Y cables and USB hubs by now), I can only use the USB port only for data or for charging, but not both at the same time.
This makes it impossible to work over prolonger periods, as I find myself plugging & unplugging cables all the time (which I sure will do the port mechanics a lot of good along the way, too).
I found a neat trick involving cat'ing some file in /sys/devices/platform/sec-battery/power_supply/battery, but that won't work for me - even so I am rooted and on the latest Cyanogen Mod Kernel for this device.
From the way it looks, there is no pershoot driver for changing the charger settings included in the CM firmware that I flushed, and I can't find any PM900 specific pershoot firmware kernel for the PM-900 either.
W/o the ability to force USB charging on the tablet, I'll have to dump the whole thing, as I am desperately trying to set this up as my laptop replacement.
For the life of me I can't understand who came up with this brain damaged design, but I am using a high power charger which delivers 2A through the cable.
So its not the charger - which I also proofed by charging the unit w/o problems by just disconnecting all other devices (single cable connection).
From the way it looks, the tablet stops charging the moment the current drops even slightly below peak (meaning *any* other device is hooked up on the bus, too).
Those other devices consume very little current (USB microSD card reader, mouse adapter, etc), but its always only a "one way street" (charging or data use, but never both).
I need a solution to this, or this Samsung gets the boot - and this would be the last Samsung tablet I'll ever buy!
Any real help is appreciated.
Update:
I finally found out what's going on.
By switching around Y cables and USB adapters like there is no tomorrow (all bought and paid for with precious ca$h), I could finally narrow down what's happening.
THIS UNIT WILL NOT ACCEPT A CHARGE VIA AN(Y) OTG CABLE !
It'll accept a charge even from the most flimsiest of non-OTG cables, and from the cheapest of USB adapters (as long as its close to a 2A charge current), but stick anything OTG in between and its curtains.
This brain damaged design means that a tablet costing almost twice as much as a budget laptop can not be used for anything other than playing silly Games from the AppStore (now called PlayStore for just that reason?) and to post selfies on Facebook.
Anything even remotely approaching serious work, requiring to hook up peripherals like a USB mouse, keyboard, hard disk a.s.o. is utterly out of the question.
And no, Bluetooth is not always possible with such devices and WiFi setups force me give up my Internet connection.
This is just stupid, and I will now have to *seriously* rethink my entire "laptop-b-gone" approach.
I think Android tablets are just not ready for serious work, and maybe they'll never be much more than playtoys for kids and selfie aids for pimpel faced teenagers.
Off to eBay with this Samsung crap and back to Intel afterwards

By sheer accident I have found that there is ONE HW solution for this ridiculous limitation of "No charging via OTG ":

The problem is that gimmick may cost u a bundle, depending on where you buy it (at least here in the UK) and since they are the only ones making one, I doubt that's going to change.

This is the first review I have seen:
Its big and ugly, and what the friggin 1992 is with that remote control? Looks like the USB-C port is only a 2.0, which is pointless. The official specs say it has a separate barrel jack for power -- not the USB-C port.
Also note that "OTG" doesn't apply to USB-C. The concept of "OTG" refers to the BACKWARDS use of a socket meant for a peripheral (mini- or micro-A), but USB-C is a genuine dual-purpose socket.
To be honest, the ability to plug stuff into it really isn't that critically important. I do see lots of people worried about adding USB storage to it, but that seems to be a pretty weak purpose since being a network connected device, you are free to add unlimited storage via the network, which is much more useful since that would be accessible to ALL of your equipment and not just the one its plugged directly into. For the most part, the USB port is good for an ethernet adapter, and google sells a nice one with a power adapter. The only other useful peripheral I can think of is maybe a video camera, but only if you need to use your TV for video conferencing, which yes, is a useful purpose.
But.... Nokia? Isnt that just one of the old dead names from the last century like "blackberry" that is now run by some unpronouncable arm of the people's republic of china? Consequently, I wouldn't trust a box with that name on it any more than pick-a-random-tv-box-from-aliexpress.
The only thing nice I see, is that its apparently got the "old" android tv launcher, and not the "wtf were they thinking?" one.
