Odin connection fails - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I'm trying to flash CSB3_TMO to my unlocked Note9 (SM-N960U1). I'm currently on the latest unlocked firmware (ARL1). When I connect the phone (in Download mode), Odin announces "Added" and shows "ID:COM 0:[COM5]". But it either hangs forever on "SetupConnection..", or else soon errors with "Can't open the serial(COM) port" (see screenshot).
I'm using Odin3 v3.13.1_3B patched. I reinstalled the Samsung USB driver (1.5.65.0). I tried different cables and different USB ports (the connection works fine for SmartSwitch).
Any obvious mistakes here or other things to try?

I found other discussions that mentioned interference from Kies (I don't even have that installed on my PC), or difficulty with either USB2 or USB3 (I tried both kinds of port).
Any other suggestions?

HI i have Kies installed that shouldn’t cause an issue via Odin as i didn’t have any issues flashing via Odin!
Maybe you should install Kies as it will install the correct Samsung driver that is needed for the connection!
Once Kies is installed, launch it once, quit, restart and then try via Odin. Also your using the original USB C cable that came with the Note 9 ? As some cable do have issues!

It shouldn't, but some users have found that it does for them. When they uninstall Kies, the problems stop..

Yes, the original Note9 cable is among those that I've tried. All cables, ports, and drivers that I've tried connect the Note9 properly when I use SmartSwitch or adb.

Copy and pasted from thread i linked to!
"Go into Kies, Tools -> Preferences, unselect "Run Samsung Kies automatically when a device is connected", save the change, close out of Kies, and then restart ODIN 3. Try flashing now. "
Best thing i can suggest is uninstall Kies and the Samsung driver restart p.c then reinstall Kies do above! Quit Kies and make sure you also Ctrl, Alt, Delete, make sure Kies is not running in the background! Also download a fresh copy of Odin extract then launch! You are using 7zip to extract Odin aren’t you ?

Thanks for the further suggestions.
Why would I want to remove SmartSwitch from either my phone or my PC?
No, I didn't use 7zip. I downloaded patched Odin from the xda link here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/how-to/stock-official-android-pie-odin-t3907156
and then I used the native Windows unzip to extract from the zip file.
As mentioned, I did not have Kies installed at all. Kies provides nothing relevant except the Samsung USB drivers, which as mentioned I installed and reinstalled after downloading directly from Samsung.

I got it to work. I think the relevant change was that instead of using the latest Samsung USB driver (1.5.65.0 from www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads), I installed 1.5.51.0 from developer.samsung.com. But I also switched to a different Windows 10 PC, so it's possible that some other difference was responsible.

[Q] Galaxy Tab Issue

Not sure when it began but I am unable to connect my tab to any pc. I have tried 4 different ones. It just gives me the error message "usb device not recognized". I have the custom rom from overcome(the latest one) installed. I put the tab in download mode and the same issue remains. I turned on/off usb debugging and it still doesnt work. I even tried the *#7284#. That did not help either. Please help.

Anyway, back to your question.
Have you go to samsung webpage and download the kies?
http://www.samsung.com/my/support/d...WDXME&prd_mdl_name=GT-P1000&srchword=GT-P1000
Do that first, after install it, go to >>Tools>>Install driver. Click it.
make sure your tab is connected to your PC via USB.
After you click the install driver, kies will download the driver for you and it will automatically detect your USB tab.
please try.
Is your pc windows xp or 7? W7 doesnt need any drivers installed, but W xp needs drivers.

Sounds like a fault with windows. Try running updates or use a registry cleaner/fixer see if that helps.
CCleaner has one.
[EDIT] Ah I misread, looks like you have tried other systems with same issue. Not sure then.
I'm assuming you're not using the same cable with all of them, otherwise you'd want to try a different cable. If you've tried the different cables between the different devices and still the same issue, you might roll one of them back to stock and see if that fixes the issue or not. It's possible you have bad usb ports, but more than likely it's a software issue on the tab.

How about the usb cable? Possibility is high due to cable itself. Since you using the same cable with all PC. You should try to change it.

Bad cable or bad tab. Borrow a cable to eliminate that.
Not sure, When i was reading instruction for how to update with overcome rom it said that if Odin doesnt recognise the tab try a different USB port.

[Q] computer can't see Galaxy S

my samsung galaxy s is not recognized by my computer no matter what i do!
don't know why, i've done some research, no results.
i've installed Kies, which i assume already installs the drivers, but when i connect, the computer shows no sign of connection (it says that i need to update drivers in device manager??) i tried different USB ports, toggled USB debugging on/off, NOTHING WORKS
the reason i want my computer to recognize the galaxy is because i want to update it to android 2.3.5 via odin. but when i enter download mode, the computer doesn't recognize it. when i'm in the system, the computer STILL doesn't recognize it...???
please somebody help, it's rooted, running a different MIUI version (not the ones in xda dev section), i'm not sure where i got it from, but it's called an ENG_MIUI?
CM7 (and subsequently MIUI) is built from the Nexus S source code, so find the proprer drivers for it. "CM7 drivers" should be a sufficient google search. Also, Kies sometimes interferes while using the other drivers. If you run into any problems, uninstall Kies.

To get your phone recognized you need nexus s drivers. But that won't help you get it recognized by kies.
You need stock firmware on your phone to get it updated through kies.

Just to clarify, this won't help you. Samsung uses Samsung drivers. Since you do not currently have Samsung firmware on your phone, this won't do you any good. As previously stated by two very informative posters, you will need the Nexus S drivers to recognize your phone.
And, also as previously stated by just an absolutely wonderfully helpful poster, if you do a simple google search you'll find exactly what you need. Try either Nexus S Driver, CM7 Driver, Nexus S CM7 Driver, or really anything else similar. You could also check the CM7 Wiki, as I'm sure there would be a link for them there. And finally, if you simply search XDA Developers, I'm sure you'd find plenty of posts with what you need.
Hopefully that helps.
thanks
now my computer can see it when it's in android, but why does it STILL not see my Galaxy S in download mode???
do i need another set of drivers? (it said driver not found)
BTW THANKS GUYS!!! sorry if i'm being annoying

Well, it seems to be a driver issue!
Try these (32-bit windows) but make sure that you are having a fresh win7 installed just in any case that your reg got corrupted with drivers (Ime ).
Still not working, then try on another pc..!

Well, CM7 drivers won't help SGS to get recognized on PC on DLD mode, you need another set of drivers and not those Nexus S's. I had the above ones installed on my PC (Google's your Best friend ) .
I had to install the drivers manually,
Right click on computer, click manage -> device something -> find your device in the list, select to update driver, search manually and enter the path to your android sdk and search.
Worked like a charm to me

computer could see device in download mode?
hi
i had same problem, but computer recognize the device as "unknown device"
in all modes, developed, storage etc...
i am close to think thats is problem of internal usb driver of the rom
want to downgrade from de device, whitout usb, but i dont know how do it, because i am not root, and its no possible in 2.3.4 whituot usb.
thanks
I had a lot of similar issues with my I9000, too.
Tried everything on ROM and driver side also on different computers.
Finally it turned out that my Micro USB connector was corroded.
I have around 30 people in our company that have the same phone, and 5 of them had similar issues. I guess it's a common problem with this device.
I took a toothpick and cleaned the contact of the connector by sliding it up and down for a couple of million times. This also did the trick for my colleagues.
I think it's at least worth to try it.
Good luck
i try to clean the contact, but still cant connect to the computer.
I wonder if a method of degrading the system with a signed rom from the recovery, without using the USB cable or ODIN.
i have a same problem. Any new solution?

[Q] Kies and LPY (ICS 4.0.3) USB problems?

I turned off usb debugging, but the mass storage I can't turn off: I have to choose between MTP and PTP.

I tried Kies via Wifi and it works, fine for me.
BUT I prefer Kies via USB. Is there anybody else with the same problem and can help me?

Were you able to connect to Kies? I can't. I am not talking about USB mass storage mode, but I want to connect PC Kies with my phone and ever since LPY upgrade I can't. I have stock rom, no root and CWM or anything like that. The PC finds the device GT-N7000, and it works fine in explorer, but Kies can not connect to the phone. It stays in connecting and then it says that there was an error connecting to the device.
Anyone else with LPY that can not connect to Kies for PC?

I am also unable to connect to KIES since performing the ICS update ( via mobile Odin ). I tried USB debug on or off and also Wireless and Network settings different combinations... no go...

I have just updated Kies and apparently is working.
Date of update appears to be today, 14/05/2012, version 2.3.1.12044_18.
I only use kies to make backups and restore them, but this software is somewhat buggy.

I responded to an other thread here which has a similar situation as you have...
anyway, what you should do is completely uninstall kies.. when I say completely, I mean removing it thru the registries (of your computer), folders in Program files or Program files x 86... After removing it, reinstall it again, uncheck and recheck usb debugging in your Phone's settings.
Check if Kies will recognize your phone after... It may take a bit while.. but it will I'm sure, also unplug and re-plug your USB cable to different usb ports on your computer and check which one will automatically connect and detect with your phone.
If your using a PC, it's advisable you plug your phone at the back of your PC (where I think there's a USB port in there), it gives a much stronger signal than the one at the front of your tower or desktop.
Hope this helps...

[Q] Not recognised in Odin

Hello people,
I am trying to change the firmware of my galaxy mini. Installed correct drivers but it does not get recognised in Odin (v4.3 ofcourse).
Just to check it out, i run Odin v3.04 and a few others (i think 4.37 and 4.38) and it was recognised immediately!
What might the problem be?
P.S.
I know there are multiple threads asking for help with odin, i checked out too many of them but with no result.
Sorry for disturbing you!!

Well, to solve ur problem, try uninstalling Samsung USB driver and installing it again. To uninstall the driver, go to control panel>uninstall programs then scroll down to Samsung USB driver and uninstall it from there. If that doesn't work, try using a different port or cable?

I know that there are similar threads and I read them but didn't solve my problem, I told it in my previous post also.
I tried with 2 different (100% working) cables and 3 usb ports (100% working, I also used them to work on the Galaxy S3).
Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers many times. I tried installing through Kies, through the "Samsung USB Drivers" and through windows update. Nothing worked.
Let me tell you again that other versions of Odin (that can't help me work on the galaxy mini) recognise it. Maybe there is something wrong with Odin I use.

[Q] Phone not supported in Kies 2.0

I get this error message when connecting via USB that the phone is not supported by Kies 2.0 and the phone is brand new and completely stock. Should I return it?
Can you see the phone in your windows explorer or similar, the phone and SD card storage?
If no, then it is more likely a driver issue. Download and install the S3 Toolkit from here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979290 and follow the instructions to install the drivers. If all goes well then there is no issue with the phone. Not used Kies but if the drivers install properly then you shoudl be able to see it in Kies.
In all honesty, I would not bother with Kies. The way to go is once you root (if you inted to) is to just do nandroid backups to your microsdcard. That way if anything happens when away from your computer you can easily rectify it.
If you decide not to use Kies then remember to remove it from your computer before using S3 Toolkit as it can cause conflicts.
Kies and the drivers work just fine with my i9300. And I can read and write internal and external. And Odin works perfect...
So why not Kies? Even tried reinstalling and a clean Windows 7 install with only Kies installed. And my i9300 worked just fine on all the others but not my i9305.

Are you saying that the I9305 is picked up by odin and you can see the phone in Windows or are you referring to the 9300?
Have you tried the drivers from S3 Toolkit? I do not have kies here and it is removed from my phone so cannot test it. Actually, what rom are you running? Perhaps the rom has the Kies stuff removed?
Have you enabled USB Debugging?
I'm saying that it all works just not Kies with my I9305. Everything else is working 100% and I've tried USB debugging on and off. Even considered flashing another firmware but can't find a NEE or the TLA my phone came with.
Ah ok, well in that case I cannot see there being an issue with the phone at all. Just a Kies issue somewhere or possibly an issue with the rom but still do not think it justifies getting it replaced as you know the USB interface works.
I've emailed Samsung last night.let's see what they say...
Swyped on my GT-I9305.
Got the phone exchanged and it's working fine now.

Yep, i just installed win 7 x64, then installed KIES, did the update, connected the phone to pc via usb cable and i get a driver error message. "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" shows with ! in device manager.
I have uninstalled KIES, cleaned up the PC with ccleaner, installed: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1590.
Reboot PC and phone, no luck.
Then tried to point them manually from C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\USB Drivers and C:\Program Files\SAMSUNG\USB Drivers still no luck.
I downloaded KIES from Samsung website under the phone software section and still nothing.
After uninstall delete Samsung folder in documents.
Swyped on my GT-I9305.
I had an i9305 international for 2 weeks and Kies said phone not supported, I sold it due to cell coverage issues in my area. Now I have an i9300 International and again Kies will not work with it. Is there a different version of Kies for international phones? I am in the US.

Disconected every usb device i had plugged in, tried every usb port, and with debugging e/d ... it's driving me nuts.
Can it be a hardware problem ?
When i put it in download mode the pc detects it.
I have stock firmware XXALI5
SOLUTION to my problem:
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 2 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect

Was just about to ask if you had backed the IMEI and forgot to put it back, since I saw your picture and it said Qualcomm and not Samsung.
Tried reinstalling Kies and all, it did not work. Then called Samsung and they said that I need to send the phone to them for a software update. My old firmware was LI5 and the phone is stock.
What I did was, downloaded the latest carrier firmware from samfirmware and flashed it with Odin. Now no more problems with Kies and phone is not stated as modified. Still all original. Firmware now LI9.
Hope that helps
Saved me the hassle sending the phone to Samsung.

I get this error message when connecting via USB that the phone is not supported by Kies 2.0 and the phone is brand new and completely stock. Should I return it?

SOLUTION to my problem:
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 2 option there..
