Phone Screen Issue when on a phone call - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

I have a s10+ from tmobile with the latest update installed. I have an odd problem and am not sure if it is just me or the software. So when I place a call the screen is on of course. I then move the phone to my ear to take the call and of course the screen turns off. Now this is where the issue is. So while the call is still going on if I pull the phone back off my ear to be in front of me normally it should turn on the screen again, however it does not. No matter what I do, the only way to turn the screen on is to press the power button. Is this normal, because all my other Samsung phones did it correctly. Please let me know if this is a widespread issue / normal or if something is wrong with my phone specifically. Thanks!

You probably already restarted the phone, but what about turning it off, then back on? The proximity sensor on my S10e at times may take couple more seconds to show the screen after I move my phone away from the ear

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have tried restarting my phone no luck. Also when I pull it away from my ear I have waited 10 seconds or more and still nothing.
Anyone else, especially with a s10+ from tmobile with the latest update?

OK, well at least I'm not alone. So now if more people post maybe it is a software thing instead of my specific phone.

One thing that did seem to work for me earlier was to turn the phone face down then turn it back over and the screen came back on. I have only tested this twice though.
Sucks when you're in a call and need to use the keypad but the screen won't come back on.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it's very frustrating...
So I tried your suggestion and for me it doesn't work.
Looks like this might be an issue for several people just not wide spread. Time to exchange the phone.

Xperia TL Screen doesn't turn on!

My AT&T Xperia TL screen isn't turning on. It happened all on a sudden. Phone is all stock - never been dropped. Phone still works as I can hear camera shutter clicks by pressing the camera button. I can also hear other notification sounds. The display itself just doesn't work. Interestingly, I saw the backlight once or twice during startup as I restarted it 7/8 times. Screen never came on though.
Already repaired twice through PC companion - didn't make any difference.
Any help would be appreciated!

Take it back to the shop. If its stock, not been damaged and you have done the official repair, get them to replace it.

Thanks! Problem is I have to ship it to their repair center and it'll take a while to get my phone back. I was wondering I could probably try out something on my own if it's some kind of software glitch. Even though, it's more likely to be a hardware issue - then I'm gonna have to take the longer path.
I'm a bit of surprised. This is my 10th Sony (Ericsson) phone in last 5 years. I have never had any issue till now and I really take good care of my phones.
Did anybody experience this problem?
I have not seen any threads on here work a similar problem
Sent whilst sat on the toilet.
Try holding all the buttons for 10 seconds or the power button alone if I remember. This happened to my brother once and had to perform this to get it back working

I've got the same problem with a Xperia T! The annoying thing is that the phone has just come back from the Sony repair centre.... Never had this problem before... 3 or 4 times in a day the display doesn't turn on and I have to force a soft reset, but the phone still vibrates, still receives messages and the notification LED works! I guess those idiots messed up with something during the repair.... It's gonna be the third time i send them the phone and they keep giving it back with a different problem! Tired of these retards, I hope that they can give me a new device... This one's fu**** up...
It's probably a software related issue, as always

[Q] Wierd problem when turning screen off and on

Hey guys, im having a bit of a problem. My phone is shuting off on itself.
Everytime i turn it on, it boots up no problem, but when i hit the power button to turn the screen off, when i want to turn the screen on again by pressing the power button, the screen just goes deep blue, and turns off.
I haven't change anything on it for quite a few months now, so i'm not sure why this is happening. Im on Viper 3.5 i think or 3.7, using faux123 kernel, dont remember which version, but an old one with which i never had any troubles... rooted, s-on
Any ideas?
Thanks!

PD: Logcat in the .rar file...was too big for .txt
Really?? No one??
Well, just for further info... my phone appeared to fix itself, since it stopped doing that weird thing for a couple of days, but now is back... nothing ever changed, no new apps, or settings or anything...
Any ideas welcome
Edit: Attaching new logcats...

I think your power button is broken (or you may have a related hardware issue). Nothing but a root app can reboot the phone, and I've never seen that happen by accident.

Yeah, i thought about it being hardware but something is off... i mean, if it where the power button, then i shouldnt be able to turn it on easily, or it wouldnt turn off the screen properly, nor would it just start working alright for a couple of days... plus, it didnt recieve any hits or anything during, before or after the problem.
I also thought it could be the screen, but when its on, it works perfectly, as on the first day...
But yeah, I'm not taking hardware problem out of the table...just seems unlikely to me...
Thanks for your answer!

Edit: also, I just found out it doesnt actually restart...screen just turns dark blue, then it powers the screen off and it wont turn on when pressing power... but i know its on, because i can still hear notification sounds of incoming messages...
Edit2: Just tried same but instead of using power button, i used logo2sleep and home2wake kernel options, and did the on/off with them, and same result...dark blue screen then off and not turning on... so it cant be power button

[Q] Does your HTC ONE M7 do this?

When going to bed tonight do these steps.
1. Put your phones brightness display on the lowest setting
2. Plug your phone in for an overnight charge, do not "turn off" your phone.
3. Wake up in the morning
4. Click the power button on your HTC ONE M7
Did the screen turn on? Are the Soft Keys the only part that lights up?
I've been able to replicate this problem over and over on 3-4 different HTC ONE M7's. For some reason the phone's display will not turn on in the morning. The only way to get it to is to either hold down the power button for a few seconds and the restart screen will pop-up which activates the screen again. Or, to do a complete restart.
Eventually the screen starts working again like normal after fiddling with it for 15-20 minutes...
I believe this is either a KitKat problem or light sensor problem or both. I do know this issue was never around before the KitKat upgrade months back.

I#ve never run across that problem but I know when I enable "ScreenOn" the screen stays on all night and if I just let my phone sit with screen on (because I fell asleep texting ) the screen will be off in the morning.

with my phone its just a 5 second lag sometimes, and i click the power button again to make sure i clicked it and it instead locks itself back. The third click however, everything works fine.
this has been happening to me for the longest its very irritating, i notice it happens whenever i fall asleep, a nap during the day or when i wake up in the morning its really annoying
Well glad to see I'm not the only one.
I have provided this thread link to HTC and reported the problem. Requested that they chime in if they have any questions.

Yes I had the same issue as the original post.Long story short I ended up sending the device back. The new one didn't suffer from this problem. This was back in October of 2013.
Same issues, it's probably light sensor:

Nope. I already tried the light sensor calibration trick. It didn't work unfortunately. I ended up swapping out 4-5 HTC ONE's before it worked correctly.
yup, I tried the trick as well a few more times and could not wake the screen either. generally I'm tolerant of stuff like this because I assume it is the byproduct of repeated flashing and combo of mods.. but I I recall this happening quite early on in ownership and now it's back. (was AOSP now Sense base). sigh

Black Screen Of Death. Screen Goes Black And Persists Through Any Type Of Reboot

I have a Note 8 that i have never dropped, had this phone since release haven't rooted. However it is running one of the early Oreo Beta builds CQLB the phone is on Sprint. This has happened once before about 2 months ago and i can almost guarantee it happened in the same fashion as the most recent time a few days ago. It seems while receiving a call i go to reach in my pocket and hit several buttons pulling it out (because of the bulky case) then my screen goes completely black.
(This is where it starts to sound like the normal black screen issue that there are a thousand YouTube videos for)
The phone still makes noises for notifications, rings when calling and other noises like emails and low battery alarm. The screen however doesn't display anything whatsoever and has a blue led blinking.
(This is where it differs)
I've done every button combination i can think of with no avail.
-The regular restart button combination Vol Up + Power and hold for 7-10 secs,
-I've tried to boot into Recovery mode by guessing at what time the Samsung logo should be on the screen and pressing the vol button down several times
-I've tried to boot into safe mode by pressing the Bixby button, power and Vol Up and without the screen displaying anything i can of course not see if i was in Recovery or not.
The screen doesn't display a Samsung Logo, No sprint splash screen NOTHING. The last time this only lasted for about 3 hours and it suddenly came back up when being on the charger and restarted several times. This is now day 3 and after dozens of restarts nothing has worked, on or off the charger. I mentioned the Oreo build because maybe it's linked to that? i haven't had this issue on regular Nougat. ANY help is appreciated and thanks in advance
Try turning off Always on Display. It worked for me..
Actually your problem seems different, so doubt it will work

Kinda hard to do without anything displaying on the screen whatsoever, anyway i mailed it off yesterday for repair from Samsung. It was either that or a 2 hour drive to 12 Mile (Detroit) to bring it to the Ubreakifix store.
Unfortunately Sprint doesn't offer loner phones and can't activate any phone that is non sprint outside of some iPhones which sound a bit strange but now I'm out a phone for 9-11 days :silly:
Have you solved this issue? I have the same issue with my phone. It started happening to me even when I was on Nougat. Happens to me several times already. It goes black screen for about an hour to 3 hours then randomly get back to normal (get notification sounds, can receive call, etc). I am now on Oreo. Everything is stock. Never rooted my device as well.
Tried to bring to Samsung but all they did is 'Software Update' the device which is basically reinstalling the firmware and wipe everything. Service Center sucks and doesn't want to claim it is a defective unit.
My note 8 began experiencing this yesterday and after some frustrations and work around, I managed to pinpoint the issue.
Work around was go unlock phone and drag down taskbar, then click on systems and the system interface would open, after which I could press buttons on lower part of phone and clearscfeen to get back to homepage.
Problem was with Google. In my case I realised when I opened Google maps, the screen went black, so I went into applications and cleared the Google cache and Google maps cache. No 0roblems since.
Is it something with Snapdragon?

Question HELP! Screen just turned off and won't come back on, but the device works.

S21 Ultra, US Factory Unlocked model straight from Samsung. I've had it for a month.
I was in the middle of using it and the screen suddenly went black. It didn’t do any screen off animation or power off animation, it just suddenly turned black.
I know the phone still works because if I hold pwr+vol down I can feel the vibrations as it reboots. I can also use *./adb devices* and it lists the device as connected. It also automatically opens android file transfer when I plug it into my macbook. All these things suggest that the underlying phone works fine.
It’s just that the screen won’t turn on.
What can I do, short of sending it to samsung for a warranty claim?
So I switched to my backup phone, left to take care of some business, and now the s21u is working.............
I'm not sure I can trust it any more. But also, WTF happened?
That's very peculiar... Especially given that you force restarted it with PWB+VOL-UP. I would have expected it to turn the screen on upon restarting.
Maybe back up all your stuff, wipe it and take it to Samsung and see what they would say? Maybe they would find some issue and replace it..
This has happened to me twice since having it since 1/28. Both times I was listening to music. Music stops. Screen goes black....eventually comes back after pressing power button and rebooting. It's almost like Blue Screen of Death behavior

what's your software version? have you submitted an error report via samsung members app?
I had this same issue on my old S5 where my screen would sometimes go black and still work. As a workaround, I used 'scrcpy' an open-source tool available on Github. I could mirror my phone screen on a PC and control it.
