OneUI fluidity - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

After the OneUI update, I find that the phone isn't as buttery smooth with its animations as it used to be. This is particularly noticeable when switching between apps or going into the app switcher screen. It's kind of choppy (but not necessarily lagging).
Anyone else experience this?

It's always recommended to full wipe (or at least wipe cache) after a major version number update. For me, this has always smoothed out most of the rough edges.
Which build are you on?

US Unlocked OneUI update.

No, I mean the last four digits of the build number. Earlier builds seem to be less smooth than the later ones. At least on Exynos; SD could be different because it's simply faster.

The only fluidity issue I really noticed on OneUI, and it's pretty terrible, is when I open the quick settings/notifications panel, from the lock screen. Oddly, it doesn't happen if you're using the stock wallpaper, but as soon as you're using a custom wallpaper, the "lag" is terrible on the lockscreen when opening that menu (like 5-10fps, super choppy).

I noticed the same thing. I didn't want to do a full wipe. The only thing I've found to help is set animations to 0 so it feels snappy again.

For me the phone startup time had more than doubled after pie upgrade. But a cache wipe made it back to normal again.

That's a bug in Android 9, not One UI. Or so I hear

Yep, there is not the same smoothness and feeling like it was on 8.1
Easy test : Use 8.1 with energy saver (Just cpu to 70%) and then use 9.0 with the same energy saver (Just again, only cpu to 70%) and you see the difference between Oreo and Pie instantly !
Pie is not optimized enough. It just eats 20% of our generell performance i would bet, because u can feel it.
I flashed now 8 Times between Oreo and Pie.
Every time i had the chance to see the diferences between the OS-Versions.
And the Battery is not better on pie.
(Yes, i flashed sometimes via odin clean, and sometimes over the 8.1 the ota to 9.0. So i could check the variables between clean flash and ota).
Pie is not so fluid like oreo.
And the Adaptive Brightness Problem ! (S9 and S9+ had this too, but samsung patched it later)
The RAM-Management is worst on Pie.
The OS feels like : Put a full note 7 ROM on Note 3 and use it for 1 Week....
Some kind of laggy. But not realy laggy...I do miss on pie 20FPS. This it how it feels. From 60FPS to 40/45FPS.
When u turn on the energy saver for cpu it feels like u drop from 60FPS to 35-40FPS. (Its just how i want to describe it )
When u turn on the energy saver for cpu in oreo it feels like from 60FPS to 50-60FPS. A lot smoother... (Depends on usage and user ! Gaming hits harder, i know )
I talk about dayly usage and not heavy gaming. I dont game on my smartphones but i would guess : Gaming is not so smooth with 9.0 like it was on 8.1. Can anyone tell here, wo is gaming on 9.0 and was gaming on 8.1 ??

tbh on european exynos version i think it is smoother than oreo.

for me goes perfect.... im on sd

I switched to 9.0 via OTA and then made a factory reset.
(Exynos here)
But this Time i had this bug. Persistent bug.
When u press the powerbutton to lock the device, it takes 1-1.5 sec. to lock !
Delayed. Sometimes when i flashed via odin the 9.0 or ota from 8.1 this bug happens and u can only get rid of it, when u factory reset.
I know, some people encountered the bug.
But wow, even from fresh install via odin this can be appear.
Okay, iam back on 8.1 again
But : I will wait until all the bugs on pie are killed. I do wait a few versions of pie.
Enjoying 8.1 ^^

did you actually fully flash pie filling all slot and selecting csc.md5 over home?
and by factory reset, you mean wipe data and wipe cache?(yes both)

Yes. Every Time a fully clean flash via CSC and not Home_CSC
So every Time after flashing it did a factory reset and i had to setup the device.
And i set it always as new device up abd i did not use app-backups.
And yes, with factory reset i mean to wipe data and cache.

wow ok.
then U firmware must be buggy.
international note 9 dont have this

I use the same firmware like everybody.
Used OTA's too sometimes.
International N9 (Exynos, DBT Firmware)
Bugs that i found, others found too.
We already told it samsung via Members App and they answered, that they take a look inside the software.
S9/+ had this problems too and samsung fixed it.
But not everybody had this problems. Some had this sometimes and some didnt.
Like my powerbutton issue :
Sometimes when u update to 9.0 the powerbuttonbug appears and when u press the powerbutton to lack, it will lock after 1-2sec. delay.
Sometimes the bug does not appear.
But when it appears : it wont go away until full reset.
9.0 is still buggy a bit.
At this moment iam back to 9.0 to test again and no problems for 14Hrs usage now.
No powerbutton problems, no autobrightness-problems.
Its atm just fine.
Battery loooks great too.
Strange !
This time it was ota and even no reset after it.
Edit :
But yes. Its some kind of "broken". I think its still buggy. Like it was first for the S9/+ too.
I wrote that iam on pie for 14 Hrs.
Not its a few hrs more.
No Batteryproblems (91% and 17Hrs Usage with 53Min. Screen ON. Its TOP like Oreo !)
No LockButton Bugs.
No Speedproblems.
No nothing ! In this state : I recommend fully to update to Pie.
But what i didn´t understand : I flashed nearly 10 Times now forward and back.
Every time it had some kind of problems.
I flashed 9.0 clean via odin with factory reset (csc and not home_csc).
I flashed 9.0 clean via odin with factory reset and later ota´s (Security updates. 2 or 3)
I flashed 9.0 via ota over 8.1 and let it go
I flashed it via ota over 8.1 and than do factory reset.
Every time there was one problem, that 8.1 did not had.
Battery (Without any reason, tools did tell that it was fine, but it was draining)
Speed : Feels like u miss 20FPS vs. Oreo (Dayly usage, i do not game).
Autobrightness will not work even after 10+Days. It does not remember my usage...
But now its okay. Everything works.
Maybe its the DBT. Because some of us had the same problems that i encountered.
Funfact : Every single Bug or Problem i listed here appears not in every flash. Sometimes u get the brightnessbug and sometimes lockbuttonbug, sometimes speedbug....
And yeah, some user have the brightnessbug, some does not, but using same firmware. Some have the lockbuttonbuck and some didnt. Etc...
Its just buggy. But now i had enough luck to dont have all the bugs. So i stay on Pie
Edit : Sorry for my maybe bad english, but i think its understandable. No, i hope it is

A few questions about the 6.0.1 update

So I am a bit burned from updating my s5 mini (last time it just updated itself to 5.0, my battery life and performance shrunk and it wouldnt even let me disable bloatware).
Here are my questions:
1. How did the battery life change from 5.0;
2. How did the peformance change from 5.0 (including in-apps, opening them and regular menu opening/scrolling);
3. Is USB-OTG now supported?
1. Battery life has improved a lot, at least for me. It seems that Smart Manager is really doing its job and I'm seeing an improvement in both standby time and SOT. With a few tweaks here and there you can improve the battery life even more.
2. Everything feels smoother, there are some updated animations and transitions that really make the phone feel like new.
3. No, OTG on the S5 Mini has never been and never will be officially supported by Samsung. There is a custom kernel that enables OTG but it most likely affects the water resistance capabilities because of the exposed USB connector and also it's somewhat of a risk to use anything that requires power on a port that was never designed to do that.
One of the few drawbacks I noticed just today is that the auto brightness seems a lot less responsive. For example it's very sunny today and most of the time when pulling the phone out of my pocket the display was still stuck on low brightness. It might just be a conflict with xposed or something else I'm running. All in all I recommend that you update, I skipped the 5.1.1 update as well but for different reasons, 6.0.1 is pretty good.

What model are you using? I'm using the GH800F.
How big is the change? And I've heard that 6.0.1 gives you less performance for more battery. Is that correct?
Sorry, I'm just scared of updating because I don't want to lose all of my data for another let down like 5.1.1 (that literally just enabled itself out of ****ing nowhere and I lost everything).

G800F as well. Like I said, I've noticed a big improvement in battery life. Just make a backup of the important stuff on your phone like contacts and photos and try the 6.0.1 firmware - I recommend you do a clean install via ODIN.

Alright, as long as the performance hasn't decreased (especially in games) then I'll update.
Since I've got most things on my SD card, can I just remove it from my phone, update and put it back in?

Yes, backup everything you don't want to lose to your card, wipe the phone from recovery and install a fresh 6.0.1 firmware with ODIN. If you don't like Marshmallow you can always go back to KitKat.

That's the problem, I can't revert. I tried doing it with 5.1.1 but it just wouldn't let me. I tried multiple times, on multiple PC's with multiple USB wires. (which is why I'm so nervous).
P.s. So if I remove my card, installl 6.0.1 and add it again it'll work?

You should be able to revert, if you can't then there's an issue with something - maybe you haven't updated the Samsung USB drivers?
Yes, it will work. Backup your contacts, messages, photos, videos, anything you want saved on your card and pull it out before you update if you're so nervous.

Also be aware that marshmallow ****s up your gps big time. if you're only using it for rough navigation it's fine, but don't expect accuracy as a pedestrian
Hi, i flashed stock MM TW comming from CyanogenMod 13. My battery life seems worse than before with CMod... What should I do?
Before upgrading to MM I did a benchmark test (AnTuTu) on 4.4.2 for comparison, ran the same test on MM and here are the results.
Thanks for the test. A more meaningful one would be to compare Lollipop 5.1 with MM 6.0.1 as most S5 Mini users have Lollipop installed.
I have a question about the MM 6.0.1 update. I flashed the new rom al updatet and seemd to work perfect. Then i noticed, the battery life was very poor. So take a good look at what was draining it. During the day it seemd okay, then when i got home it started rapidly draining again. I managed to figure out that when i am using 4G/LTE everything is fine but when i am home and change to my wifi, my screen turns on every 3 minutes or something and it complety unlocks as wel. because i have my screen time set to 1 minute it stays that way then turns of and about 3 minutes later turns itself on again. When i disable wifi the problem is gone.
Has anyone a idea how to fix this? i live at the border of my country and without wifi its gonna be expesive with roaming costs ....
Thanx in advance for your reply's
Hi, I'm using Germany (DBT) firmware.
I usually use Ultra Power Saving Mode.
Then after turn off Ultra Saving Mode, e-mail application is asking me "admin priviliages confirmation" for each time. (only for Exchange account)
My flashlight don't work in the dark after the update to marshmellow.
Tried another from play store, the same issue

I had the same issue. Resetting the app worked for me. (btw. I googled that)
"Anwendungsmanager", "Kamera", "Speicher", "Daten löschen" und "Cache leeren".
Since you said you are on the DBT firmware, I assumed you are german.
I'm on 5.1.1 not rooted with g800f. Should I update to MM with Odin first then flash the custom recovery? Thank you!

PIE

So i want to update to pie i am rooted with unlocked boot and critical and currently on SEP security patch and was just trying to find out if i can update to PIE and wich POST is the right one to update to PIE?
You need to update to the latest November security patch first before flashing Pie. There is already a guide here, there was no need to make a new thread.

Not an impressive PIE stable rom
Issues i faced..
1. I have also faced the issue of deleting my photos, although i deleted photos, still it showed as pics, without any image visible , i restarted the device many times, later i cleared the cache, delete from trash aswell, then it was working properly,
2. After updating to Pie , i see the performance degrades, when i click power button, i see very slow in locking the screen, and even when finger print sensor response also affected.
3. Battery performance too decreases after update to Pie.
4. Some times changing the wallpaper or lock screen, destabilizes my ringtone.
5. Adaptive brightness is not at all effective, i never use it, very slow in response.
6. Cant able to connect to wifi hotspot at 5GHz frequency range with my lappi.
7. 8.1 Oreo was much better in performance, thinking of going back to Oreo.
8. Only improvement i experienced is low volume is much better to 8.1 Oreo.
9. High volume is also not upto the mark.
10. In camera, Manual lens was not working properly in 8.1 Oreo, but now its working.
My Antutu bench mark figure shows as 131009.

P20 pro issues since pie update

Hi I am in Hungary I just got the update a couple of days ago. It was 8 before and now it is 9 and EMUI 9.
Since the update I had 1 random restart and for me it is less smooth. My main issue is I use the double tap on the recent apps button to go back to the previous app a lot and it is not really working always or I have to do it quite slow and not the same as I did and it stuck and have to do again and very annoying. It is also ignoring some apps to go back to like it was not used at all. And there are other minor bugs like in a game I double tap and it makes a screenshot. I know the double knock thing I use it a lot but before it was not this sensitive and it was doing only for knocks and not taps. I was hoping so much the new EMUI 9 would support 3rd party apps notifications on the AOD but no. I am disappointed. My last phone was a S galaxy s7 and they made this integration so quickly. I have a feeling we are abandoned. Anybody have some news about this? I miss it so much. The phone is faster a bit anyway and the battery time is great. I deleted the cache partition. So what is your opinion about these things? Thanks guys.

Try to reinstall with the OTG method, should work, in my case was same, the first installation felt laggy, but after i repeat the process, works smoothy
one annoyance i found in emui 9 is that now the default sim for sms will follow default internet sim, not the call one like how it was in emui 8,
this cause issue for banking app that using background sms for verification,
the app will say am using incorrect sim card if i use it with an internet connection from second sim.
this wasnt an issue in emui 8.
i hope this is just a coding bugs instead of purposely made by huawei

banking app itself is fine as long as i use internet from the sim that i used for banking verification as well,
it become an issue when i use internet from another sim. the app will unable to send verification sms from the correct registered sim, since in emui 9, default sms sim is following the one used as default for data in dual sim setting, while in emui 8, it follow the one used for call.
kinda hard to explain it in a word, lol. But this is common problem with dual phone sim, and thats why i expect all oem to actually give us setting to set default sim for sending sms, now we can only set default for data and call.
I am with locked bootloader.
I have updated my p20 pro to pie via SD card.
Now, is it possible to return to official oreo without unlocking bootloader..
Thanks
It's same the problem with my P20 Pro After I had updated to EMUI9 the Chrome app didn't sync well everything.. My old bookmarks are empty also! It also flashed off in the Google app before, I reset to factory for twice. And then is turn to Google Play store's apps update to update repeated.. It's like you never did it :silly::silly: I'm thinking about take it back to 8 through the Huawei Hisuite.. I think the Android 9 Pie comes with EMUI 9 is not ready for now... By the way, I'm from Vietnam, a Chinese.
(2) I've just tried to up to EMUI9 one more time.. But this time my phone didn't get matters at all, it's running well!
- Above all issues didn't see any more
Things I did just simply returned to the 8 ver through HiSuite, then I used it for the ordinary days, logged in Google accounts also..
At before I was using Chinese language for the Huawei Vietnam device.. So I think it was wrong during updating something just like that, in this time I changed device back to Vietnamese language(root) & update to EMUI9 with Hicare app in the phone........... I saw something after it had updated was the update's log is writing Vietnamese while my phone was changing into Chinese language.. So funny about it! But the most important thing was everything well! No battery draining quickly too, thank gods!
- The present patch:
9.0.0.168(C636E2R1P12patch01)
- The present version:
9.0.0.168(C636E2R1P12)
*My suggestion you do not put it in Factory Reset, do not change to other locations through changing language in the phone, update it to 9EMUI based on the lastest ver of EMUI8(local) with the patches if it has. Good luck to you..

Could you explain how to do this please?
I did factory reset my p20 pro and it seems it is the same. I have the same problems just like after the update. 1. Double tap on recent apps squere button (go to previous app instantly) is laggy often stuck on the card view instead of reloading the previous app immediately. 2. Touch screen less responsive, many times I can see a blueish 'sparking' mark or line where I touch or swipe the screen means the system detected my touch but it is not linked to the OS properly. Anyway the battery and everything else seems good. So what is otg method I tried to search but it seems not so common or they call different, and anyway how can a factory reset different than the other FR? thank you guys and happy new year!
Hi All
I wonder if I could ask a favour? The stock camera app I have on EMUI 8 (5th November update) has no method of saving the photos other than internal storage. Does the camera app on Pie have an option to save to an external location eg OTG SD card?
Thanks in anticipation...

Note 9 stuttering and terrible annoying stuff on android 9

Hello everyone, i wanted to ask something about the note 9. (exynos)
Ever since i updated to 9.0 (csa2) it seems as if my animations stutter alot, especialy the app switcher animation. It is really annoying. I did a master reset when i flashed. I see CSA7 has come out, is there anything different in it before i download it from sammobile? My phone doesn't get OTA for that i don't know if it is normal.
Also when turning alarms on or off i have to wait a bit before i can turn on/off the next one. In the dialer when i select a number and press the call button i also have to wait a bit otherwise it doesn't start dialing.
I can post videos if that helps understand what is happening.
Although I didn't have any issues you mention when I had SA2, I think SA7 is an improvement over previous build.
Ok then i will install SA7 but i don't get it OTA, i installed France firmware because there wasn't one for my country and after reset it said it changed the csc of the firmware to my country might be because of that. Do you think i will need a master reset again?
I did't perform master reset only wipe cache partitions

I flashed firstly over oreo csa2 - it needed around 10-14 days till it settle down and become smooth as silk. Then I wiped my phone and clean flash full regional CSA7, I also needed 10-14 days till it settles and now is smooth as silk. For the recents I found that it helps to turn off the recommended app thing, btw. So don't do anything, just wait and it will smooth out in 1-2 weeks.
Edit: also for now there is no csa2 to csa7 update... it will be newer one in February (this month) or beginning of March. The csa7 is newer for the regions that got the update late.
CSB3 is alot better so far but still not perfect. Hoping they fix it otherwise i will have to get an S10.

No SD card I THINK ... Oreo is just fine for me for now. You all are just unpaid beta testers right now! Middle of summer something decent will be out, they tend to want phones working their best during Vacation Time!

I hope so because they ruined this phone.

I would downgrade back to Oreo for now and save your money off the S10. Then again, I'm sure they don't mind people buying the S10 because of software issues on Android 9 Note 9.

Okay, so I hate Android 10 - Q

I've given this about a month now. I'm on Verizon but bought my S10e directly from Samsung, so no bloat.
Since the update these are my complaints
1. Clock on left, can't find an app to move it back to the right. (How stupid is Android / Samsung for forcing the clock in the first spot notifications appear?)
2. I can no longer swipe right on the virtual home button to switch back to the most recent app. (REALLY hate not having this anymore)
3. Can no longer adjust the grid pattern to be 3 wide for toggles when pulling the notification shade down. This means, if you have a toggle on the 6th spot on the initial toggle pull down, it CAN ONLY BE the second toggle on the second row when pulling the full list of toggles down. Super annoying if you've always had your flashlight on the far right
4. May or may not have been a change in 10, but only after updating to 10 did I notice I can no longer have exempt devices and block devices that have the WiFi password in the native hotspot app. It's all or nothing now. If this is in fact a change in 10, Android / Samsung should be ashamed of themselves. (Would love to know if this was in fact a change with v10)
5. Lock screen no longer shows Fast Charging status in perpetuity, it shows for a few seconds then reduces to just saying "charging." This phone has always been finicky with fast chargers so I rely on this information often
So the question: Can I flash back to Android P / 9 and prevent my phone from every taking 10 without having to root? I do not want a carrier-specifc firmware.

Finally someone else besides me that thinks Android 10 is completely worthless! Yes, you can flash back to Android 9, just flash the last Android 9 build for U1 firmware if you don't want carrier specific and freeze the forced update without root with the app "ccswe manager" found on the play store. Do note that flash back to 9 will probably erase everything too.
Someone, please call the wambulance for them 2

If you're one who blindly takes all updates and is happy, more power to ya bro. ?
Let me guess, you loved Windows Vista when it was released

Thanks! Yeah, I won't love having to set everything back up, but it will be nice to get my phone working better again!

I would suggest you to flash Android 9 back using the "HOME_CSC" package in Odin (not the "CSC" one), this way it will act as an OTA update and keep your data (I used it to update my S7 coz it was rooted and I hadn't OTA updates anymore...). Anyway, take a backup before with Samsung Cloud just to keep your data safe in case something wrong happen. Idk really if this trick works on a downgrade (Android 10 to 9 in this case) but you should give it a try

Actually, it doesn't matter if you flash using Home_CSC or just CSC, you'll have to wipe everything if you decide to downgrade
Really weird, i have android 10 and all the features you are talking about

I updated every new released firmware. I dont have any problem with android 10. As matter of fact, i like android 10. Seems alot quicker than 9.

But battery drains faster... Even if I like One UI 2.0, this drain and some little bugs here and there are really annoying !

So I've finally gotten around to trying this.... And it's been a while since my flashing days... Used to be a regular activity of mine.... But this time around, every thing I try fails. Downloaded several firmwares from Sammobile.... The XAA and XAS CSC's..... I have the unlocked direct-from-Samsung model.... And Odin craps out with Auth! (Fail) something to that effect.
I've tried AP only, all 5 files, omitting Home CSC, omitting only BL... Running Odin as admin, not running as admin.... Only thing I haven't tried is a different USB cable n.. Have actually seen that matter in the old days
Makes me think my phone simply won't take this older version of firmware, but it seems that the research indicates this should be possible

I'm pretty sure you must use the CSC file and not the HOME_CSC. This will erase your data but if you really want to downgrade to Android 9, then that's the way to go...
Btw, if you did the February OTA update YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO PIE. Sadely, this OTA bumped a new bootloader version and if you installed it your phone will stay on Android 10 forever..
I mean, if your actual BL is like G970U1UEU4XXXX and not G970U1UES3XXXX, then it's not possible to downgrade.your S10
I actuallt froze the OTA after the January update so I can go back to Pie if I want. Not thrilled about having to wipe everything and start over if I do go back though.
I am in the same situation
So if I have bootloader 4 I can't go back to Android 9?
