Old Stock ROM with stock kernel and with custom updated kernel - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hello friends,
I want to know what is the difference between a stock ROM (very OLD say oxygen OS 4.5.1 7.11) with stock kernel and the same ROM with the updated custom kernel from security point of view?
For me, what I have experienced is that in oreo, oneplus stock oreo ROM is not better than its nougat ROM from performance pint of view and battery back up.
Recently @dorimanx updated it stock kernel for nougat 7.11 oxygen OS.

He said: My max uptime was 2200 hours, i forgot to charge my phone for 2 days, and it's died on 1 % power...
So, if I switch to Nougat ROM again, is it safe for security as the security patch will be very old in 7.1.1.

I'd say it's not worth staying on an older Android version with both security risks form older Android and older vendor security patchlevel, that's 2 times the risk of staying on a newer more secure Android system and with latest vendor security patch.
It might be okay if you disconnect your device from internet and mobile network completely, but what to do with a smartphone that can't act like one. [emoji16]

Not better, sounds like it's not any worse either (or not by much)?
I agree with the previous comment. Any perceived (or not) difference in performance is not worth using that old of a ROM.
If you are asking about security, then you are at some level concerned about security. If you are concerned about security, than I'd say it's not worth it!

Single data point. I've always seen massively different claims for battery life and performance for various ROMs, kernels, etc. Don't expect one (or even several) reports to be any indication of what you will experience.
I can probably get 2 days easily, if my usage of the phone is light. That's just on the latest stock ROM and stock kernel. Battery life is going to vary drastically, depending on how you use your phone.

Thanks all for the prompt and quick useful reply.

sultan's unofficial Lineage OS 14.1 is STILL maintained every month with latest monthly patches and lineage upstreams. I am also on OOS 4.5.1, i miss the new UI BUT stock oreo is not worth it.

Most stable custom rom

I'm flashing rom for the first time I have unlocked the bootloader my device is rooted.
I have been reading posts
RR seems the most stable with oos cam included and it doesn't have pocket mode which can lead to faster battery drain.
So can you guys suggest me any rom which is as stable as oos and good camera quality (not working of camera, quality of the picture processed)
May this thread helps others too :fingers-crossed:
Thanks
Nothing has camera as good as stock, so if camera is important to you, stick with stock based ROMs (official OOS, FreedomOS, OP3Lite ...)
That port that is available for RR still has some issues.
Maybe try Paranoid Android, it may have some magic that other ROMs don't due to developers involved. It's supposed to have camera on pair with OOS, but I haven't tried it yet so I can't confirm (and for some reason people don't really talk much about PA). It has all other features of OOS.
But I'd suggest sticking with OOS based ROMs until OnePlus releases camera sources.

If the camera is a non issue than Slim Roms is the best. Fast not cluttered with useless features. But honestly OnePlus has it down with 3.2.7. had my doubts but the have created a ROM that is up there with P.A and Slim.
For me nucleaRom is the best and bug free ROM and you will have the OOS camera

I think the developer has stopped the development for this rom
Resurrection Remix Black Jubel is very stable in my opinion......and it has tons of customization and Accepts the OOS Camera Port so you can get identical Camera quality to stock.

I'm using FreedomOS with blu_spark kernel at the moment, but I'll probably try Paranoid over coming weekend.
To be honest, OOS is actually a pretty good ROM. With Xposed framework it has everything I need.

Hmm...yes 3.2.7 is nice but you can't really compare it to custom ROMs. It's great for its intended purpose (stability and compatibility) but it doesn't have the customization that custom ROMs have...obviously. It depends on what is most important to you.
I'm using OOS 3.2.6 with latest blu spark kernel and I'm getting really good screen on times, like 10-15℅ drain per hour. I also have Xposed installed but I'm only using greenify with it. Imho OOS is just as good as any other ROM, and I have just about tried every other ROM and kernel combination with the exception of the new nougat releases. There are only a few extra options available in the custom ROMs in comparison to OOS and they are mostly cosmetic. I reckon wait till some stable nougat builds have been released and then we might see some improvements. There is also no need to even install freedomOS or OSlite because you can debloat the ROM yourself and learn something while you are at it. Just go to the OSlite page and check the debloat list and then remove the stuff yourself with Titanium Backup. For me it's more fun when I have tweaked the ROM myself, and I guess for others also otherwise we wouldn't even have so many custom ROMs. I have researched the living bejesus out of this phone and I am happy to share my accumulated knowledge with anyone that needs help.
Hi all,
Is there any custom ROM with pocket mode.? I have tried cm13 and RR, but no pocket mode

Paranoid rom has pocket mode I guess..
I haven't tried the rom but I have seen a tutorial on YouTube
I suggest you try h2os v2.0 5th edition. It has the best battery life, even better than pa rom. I still have 93% of battery after browsing the web using wifi for more than 1 hour. It is very smooth as well during gaming, no lags at all.

New, Help Picking ROM, Getting Started

Hello,
I haven't really messed around with rooting or custom roms in years. But my phone is starting to feel a bit dated running Lolipop, Verizon's latest OTA version. I hope to keep it another 18 months though. Ideally, I am looking for something stable and close to stock. And with good battery life (the same or better than stock), preferably with the widely known "battery-dies-before-0%" issue fixed. Future support and security updates an added bonus. I would prefer something Oreo-based, but Nouget wouldn't be too bad if there is an issue with that. I wounder if we'll ever see any Android P roms on this device. These are all the 8.x Oreo ROMs I am aware of for this device that have been updated recently (past 4 months or so). Any Others? What would you guys recommend?
8.1 MOKEE - https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/rom-8-1-mokee-unofficial-moto-x-2014-t3741385
XenonHD (development seems inactive) - https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/rom-xenonhd-t3735447
CypherOS 5.2 Funnel Cake (development seems inactive) - https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/rom-cypheros-5-2-funnel-cake-t3753495
LineageOS 15.1 - https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/rom-lineageos-15-1-t3739726
+ SailFish OS, but that doesn't count.
Also, where can I download, or how can I backup the stock Verizon image before tampering with it, so I can latter revert to stock?

Custom rom

Please can anyone tell me which is the best stable andriod oreo rom for redmi 4x i want a custom rom which has best battery backup....i want to flash it for my phone
You may want to try dot OS 2.5 Oreo it is good in terms of battery backup and known for its good UI.
There's havoc OS also available but final build has random reboot issue.
There's probably some other roms available in terms of good battery life. Just check them on YouTube.
Flashing custom kernel should give good battery backup.

No, it won't get bricked. Redmi 4X does not have anti-rollback protection.

Try different roms on your own to clear confusion.
Many roms has good backup and stable.
I've already mentioned dot OS has good battery backup.
All users have their own different usage so battery backup is going to vary.
Search on YouTube for its battery performance and other features there are several reviews about different roms.
Until you are not going to try you are going to be in forever confusion.

[Discussion] ROM's/Kernels/Mods Opinions

Whats your choice ROM/Kernel/Mod combination for OP7T Pro?
After almost two years, and although we don't have a 100% functional TWRP, we have a good range of ROM's and Kernel available even on Android 11. What do you currently use? What is your favorite ROM and Kernel combination?
Have only had the phone for just under a year. I came from OP3 to a 7T Pro (HD1910) about a year ago and haven't gone into a flashing frenzy yet. Currently running Stock OOS 10.0.14 with Arter Kernel, Magisk and Renovate ICE.
Was running OOS 11.0.0.2 with blu spark. While I did not run into many of the issues that a lot of users have faced (seems concentrated on 7T devices), my two main complaints were battery life (I lost about an hour of SOT on A11 vs A10) and the phone overall felt a little sluggish so I ended up downgrading back to A10 with MSM.
tried many roms but always get back to RR. You can do almost anything with this rom, customisation is insane. Only drawback for me were sound of dolby like on stock oos and natural mode in display settings. this rom is by far most complete and stable othan any other rom I ever used on all my previous phones.

Well, I decided to give Custom ROMs a try so I just flashed Pixel Experience. I solely blame you for opening this door (LOL; well, showing me the door). Will report back after I give it a couple of weeks of use.
I just flashed latest DerpFest plus Dora kernel. Working well for now.
For me, the flash process is very time-consuming without a working twrp.
I last tested a few roms 4-5 months ago (RR, crdroid, havoc) but some things never really worked well, for example the vibrations are too strong, the auto brightness doesn't work, sometimes the phone connection dropped for no reason or WhatsApp voice messages sometimes had sound dropouts. I didn't like that at the time and stayed with OOS.
Is there currently a Rom that really runs smoothly? I need the device as a daily driver. I've been itching to flash a new version, but the disappointment that something doesn't work puts me off.
Pixel Experience 11 works great.

Haven't used OOS in a year so can't tell.
Battery life seems decent, but I haven't done a full charge test. And i think my battery had degraded quite a bit from charging a lot.
Went from OOS11 to PE+ back to OOS10 to OOS11 back to PE+ to OOS10 to dotOS back to OOS10 and now back on dotOS. Since my last post.
Gonna stick with dotOS for a bit.
It seems like if you want good battery life, you should stick to Android 10. All custom 11 ROMs and OOS11 for that matter can't compete with A10/OOS10 battery.
i have tried few roms but ended up with rooted/stock
i think its the best
though last time i 'm back to stock 2 days ago (was on los 18.1) then stock 10 using downgrade file 2 times then root
and finally go to oos 11 wiping every thing with clean net install
No battery issue so far no lags no negative things @All
on my opinion STOCK IS THE BEST (ROOTED)

I can't find a custom ROM that is as good as OOS for DT2S, single tap to ambient display, and gesture navigation.
Anyone running any debloats here? If yes, which one(s)?
if anyone wants rock stable custom rom, go for RR! it's a10 of course but none of the a11 custom roms come close in terms of stability and customisation. I running it with nemo v4 kernel and smoothness and battery life are improved even more! I like oos 11 but little bugs like low notification volume are bugging me. I think yaap, dotos, paranoid a11 based are good but have few things to fix like autobrightness, paranoid was smoothest rom I ever seen but camera is causing issues if you want other cam than one that is included in the rom. hope soon we will have more stable and daily driver custom roms...
still on oos 11 and stock kernal. i Dont think rom development is where I want it to be I wouldnt switch again. I think it's at its dieing stages. no updates for stock either yet we pay big money. I am over mobile phones what a rort market

sadly 11.0.8.0 does not support Widevine L1 - I had it installed for about 4 weeks now (Battery life is okay, sometimes Rom is a bit buggy). I will return to 12.5.5 again and decide on which one i will stay.
What's the battery life like on Xiaomi EU v11.0.8? Like, give me some SOT stats.

I just tried it yesterday and it is pretty damn good on battery life. Idle battery drain was about 1% after 13 hours, compared to 1% every 45 mins or 1 hour on HavocOS (A11).
I think A10 ROMs are still better optimized for our phone.

Is that 8 hours from 100% down to 0%?
So about 4.8 minutes per 1% drain then?
No rom for this phone works as well as miui 10.3.5 based on android9. All others(stock miui 11,12,12.5 and xiaomi.eu roms) get progressively slower. Xiaomi.eu roms do better than stock but it still does not work as well as 10.3.5
