I have an ATT S5 (SM-G900A), completely stock, unrooted, updated to the latest 5.0 OTA update. My requirements for my phone are that it be able to pass Airwatch checks and that it be able to be encrypted (Personal device used at work). Some background first:
Last time I tried to play around with rooting, other mods, and whatnot was on my ATT S3 (I think I747?) and I discovered that an unspecified combination of rooting, installing a custom loader (CWM in my case) and installing a custom mod (Cyanogenmod at the time) made my phone unable to encrypt. At the time I was not required to use Airwatch, but encryption was required for my phone to connect to work, so I gave up on the whole lot.
I have now discovered that ATT, in their infinite wisdom, has replaced the S Voice drive mode with their own "ATT Drive Mode", and it's been verified they went so far as to remove the related APKs from the phone entirely. For those unaware, S Voice Drive mode is an feature of S Voice that (when turned on) reads out all callers and text messages, and then verbally prompts you for actions; reply, answer, ignore, etc. It allows fully hands free functionality. ATT Drive Mode, on the other hand, automatically kicks in whenever speeds of 20 MPH are detected (even if you're a passenger), rejects all calls and texts excluding a user-defined 5 person list, and essentially makes your phone useless anytime you're in a car. The goal is to "reduce texting and distracted driving", but as I'm on-call as part of my job and need to at least be aware of texts that come in within 10 minutes of receipt, it actually makes my drive much more dangerous. ATT Drive mode is a good idea for teens, perhaps, but i'm not a teen.
This brings me to my question: What are my options?
--Does rooting break my ability to encrypt? I know airwatch will flag, but I'm thinking there's a possibility of being able to root, put a custom loader on my phone, and then restore stock with that custom loader, whereupon I can try to install the drive mode APK...which leads me to my next question:
--Does having a custom loader (like safestrap or CWM or whatever is in use nowadays) break my ability to encrypt?
--Does anyone know of a way to install the S Voice drive mode in the G900A? I tried searching, but the only references involved being rooted, or ended with something vague like "download a stock rom and find the apk using root explorer" as the solution (which is vague to me because I don't know which stock rom to use, what apk to look for, and last time I used root explorer on my s3, it needed root...)
Honestly, the ideal solution would be something like the stock rom from the international version that would run on my ATT version...but I don't know if such a thing exists or is possible. I don't mind Samsung's cruft, but I do dislike ATT's lobotomizing of my phone to push their own little product that treats me like a kid. I know that I am less safe as a driver without the S Voice drive mode than I was with it.
I take it I have no options? And that no one knows how rooting affects encryption?

I will make it easy for you. Since you took the 5.0 OTA update rooting is not possible anymore. Also there is no way to downgrade to KitKat which was rootable. Sorry. Not much you can do until someone finds a way to root 5.0. If you find the S Voice Drive app, you can side load it and see if it works.

Actually, while I greatly appreciate the fact that you took the time to reply (seriously! at least you took the time!), this is neither easy nor related to the questions I asked. If you look at my post, I'm not asking "how can I root", I'm asking three rather different questions:

In fact, I am unable to remain rooted (Airwatch; it's part of the post title), and the whole point and thrust of my question lies in the fact that I am looking to find out what affects encryption and what options I have as far as getting S Voice Drive mode on my phone while staying Airwatch compliant (not rooted). In addition, "if you can find the s voice drive app" is part of the problem too, as evidenced by the third question I asked above; I don't know where to find said app.
Does anyone know anything regarding what I was actually asking?
Everything that you want to do requires ROOT! Safstrap needs root, CWM will brick you phone since the bootloader is locked. Again, there is no way as of now to root the S5 with 5.0 att OTA.

Awesome, I'll start with that sideloading, and test it out. Thanks! As far as the rest, I suppose that does clarify some things (that I admittedly already knew), so I do appreciate it, but it still does leave the answers to the other questions. I can infer, of course, that the answer to whether having a custom bootloader on the Galaxy S5 breaks encryption will be dependent on whether root breaks the encryption, since as you pointed out custom bootloaders need root to install, but the fantasy I entertained for a little while was rooting when there's a method (hope springs eternal, so I'm hoping it will eventually be possible), installing a custom bootloader so I can do things like backups and sideload, getting the proper apk's installed for the drive app, and then unrooting it so I can connect it via airwatch to my work's network. Perhaps I should have marked this as a solidly theoretical question, since as you said, there currently exists no root. I just want to know, with the unique way that Samsung implemented Knox and the encryption on the S5, what will break encryption and what won't?
Of course, there is a side question brought up by all this...how possible is it to load another firmware on my phone? as in, use Odin to put the tmobile image on my phone. That is likely a bad example, since I'm fairly certain there are actual hardware differences between the ATT and the tmobile models, but the concept still stands. At what level are the hardware configurations different between phone companies?

You will not be able to change your bootloader period... At this point the locked bootloader is unbreakable. That leads to your next question about tmobile and that's a no as well due to the locked down bootloader.
Even with root you won't be able to do anything you've suggested due to the locked bootloader.

Interesting. I had been under the impression that I had seen people referring to installing clockworkmod or some similar thing on an S5, but I think I may be getting caught up in terminology; those are recoveries, aren't they? not bootloaders? Or perhaps people were posting about the other S5s with unlocked bootloaders. 15 different versions of S5, and I get stuck with the most apple-like of all the carriers....(in the sense of "you take what we give you and don't play with it!")
So, assuming I don't manage to get it installed via the link Waiting4MyAndroid was kind enough to post, I think that rules out anything other than the method of:
--wait for a root method to be established for the new OTA
--root, install the drive apk
--unroot, so I can encrypt and pass airwatch
Does anyone know if the old method of rooting broke encryption? and whether encryption was able to be performed after unrooting again?
Edit: Attempted to Sideload. Sadly, it is telling me "App not installed" (other sideloads do work; it's not the unknown sources setting). I'm thinking either the apk is marked for s4, and it's not compatible, or it's trying to overwrite files from the established svoice system, and that's not allowed. I suppose if someone has the drive apks from a tmobile S5 image or some such thing (same model, different carrier), then I could try again, but unfortunately this apk doesn't work. So, I'm trying to find a work-around ever since the idiots over at Niantic blocked rooted users. I used Magisk which worked, but that means I had to reset everything and run on stock. I loved the ExtreStoLite ROM and I want my phone to run on that, but the ROM is pre-rooted with SuperSU 2.72. When I try to uninstall it from settings, I seem to get into a bootloop. The article from Android Police said it'll seem like I'm getting a bootloop but my device is actually re-encrypting itself. I don't know if this is true, and I didn't leave my phone alone long enough to figure out if it was.
I've read other threads suggesting that I need to have and flash the stock boot.img, which I don't know how or where to get.

Nope. Just as dangerous as any other device. The problem cones from using 3rdvparty software to do such things rather than just doing it yourself. The only difference is that you need to generate a device specific code from Huawei. Nothing big. Risks are imposed when doing anything outside of stock stuff but those issues are usually consequence of user error
I think it's said primarily for two reasons. First there's no TWRP, so recovering back to stock is more complicated and involves, at minimum, being able to get back to Fastboot. Second, people tend to freeze or uninstall system apps that they don't understand. Huawei, reputationally, can brick if you freeze the wrong system app. Personally, I haven't experienced that, and have frozen (as opposed to uninstalled) a bunch, but I admit that I'm proceeding more cautiously.
Also, some of the earlier warnings were before @mankindtw's rooting method -- before then the only available root cost you your AI and your themes (although the latter could be reloaded with some complexity). That's no longer the case -- the Magisk root doesn't delete/affect either. Nor, if you install the zip in his OP, does it blow up SafetyNet (although xPosed always will).

I got really sick, really fast, of rooting my T-Mobile S7. The only way to do it was with the special unlocked kernel, and SuperSU.
And let's be honest, SuperSU is nowhere near as useful as Magisk. At least if you're like me, and you prefer your phone to be capable of the features that root, and other various mods, available.
The US devices are cursed with the slow, and limited possibilities, that their hardware manufacturer's allow.

I tried forever to switch my S7 over to Magisk.
Even tried things like recompiling the the special "development kernel", as I think it's called, into an Odin file, by Magisk manager.
And all my attempts always either resulted in the device refusing to even start the boot process, or Odin refusing to allow me to flash the Magisk compiled version of the kernel.. [I was using the special Odin to flash the files, too.]

newbie warning: don't re-lock bootloader, and beware flashing ANY custom ROM.
On the X4, the bootloader changes drastically between 8 and 9 as it introduces a dual file system which is used by OTA updates to alternate the live system, and as a backup if failure. It is not a true Treble system, only partial. You must not depend on being able to flash back and forth between O and P. If you update to P, stay there. I expect this to be exacerbated by those phones which update to 10, if that in fact happens(probably One/fi only). There is also much confusion as to which file system/setup any custom ROM uses, and thus, how you would get back to stock, if that is even possible. Be very careful and assure yourself that you are fully willing to lose permanently your new phone before you do anything. Please read posts in these forums.
I've seen many posts of folks, mostly noobs, who have flashed ANY custom ROM Lineage and are unable to get back to a working stock. Sounds super simple but apparently it's not. Best to assume that if you try things, especially Lineage, that you will never be able to get back to a working stock. Read a bunch of posts here and you will realize that.
I've also seen a bunch of folks on this phone, and other phones who have run a bat file to flash their phone which contains the line
"fastboot oem lock" or similar.
Don't do it!!! - This will lock your phone and you will never be able to do anything with it again. It is totally unnecessary to lock your phone. Folks who should know better are leaving bat files lying around with this command. If you use one of those bat files to flash your phone, just check and remove that command line. Else you will have destroyed your phone. That's one of those things that "sounds good" until you do it.
EDIT: You can run stock on a bootloader unlocked phone - I do it all the time - plays PoGo just fine. I don't know about banking apps - I don't use them as I assume any 10-year-old can and will hack my phone.
EDIT: 6Feb2020: folks are reporting taking a security OTA onto a modified phone and rendering their phone(s) unusable. Only take OTA to a pure unmodified (no Majisk ever on it)(etc)(no mods ever on it)(stock recovery)(etc) stock ROM. Heed this warning. All of these "temporary" mods leave traces that screw up the update process.

afaik, you can't. Return the phone and get your money back. There will probably be a bunch of these worthless phones put up for sale. If you can't return it you could try the suggestions of sd_shadow in other threads here, but I don't believe they were successful on the X4.

Good to not be trusting!!!! With this (or any) phone, I recommend you get only from a place (like ebay) where you can easily return it and get your money back. ebay can force a reluctant seller to refund your money. Assure that the seller has a 99% + rating and says they will accept returns and pay for return shipment, usually for 30 days. I don't think you can easily tell if it has been unlocked and re-locked - only that it works perfectly, or doesn't. You can check the ID of the ROM in your phone against the latest for your area by checking lolinet.
When you get it, check all functions and assure IMEI is present. check wifi, BT, etc etc. Make calls. Check that the phone works with the towers in your area and with a local SIM. etc etc. read here and find the things that folks having problems where it won't do things and assure your phone will do it. Install Pokemon Go on it and play it briefly to assure your phone hasn't been modified. I have no idea if any of these phone will work with any banking or payment apps, and each app will have it's own specific checks that it performs against the phone. Test what you will use. Fully. ASSUME NOTHING!!!
As far as rooting it and/or unlocking it, I would strongly advise against it. For this particular phone X4 I would determine that it works perfectly and then NOT modify it. Unless, of course, you are willing to throw your phone away and buy a new one without a second thought(most of us don't have that kind of money!). Mine happened to have been unlocked when I got it from ebay but it was on a stock 8.1 and it was able to, and did OTA update to the latest Pie stock ROM. Thus I was easily able to assure if was okay. It being unlocked seems to have affected nothing. I have never tried to root it or do anything to it (recovery or otherwise) as I read far too many posts of folks here who had rendered their phones incapable of returning to a working stock, and only on a limited custom. Not what I wanted. I have not heard of anyone successfully getting one of these phones back to a FULLY WORKING stock state.
The days of getting a phone and easily modifying it and then returning it to stock may be gone. Get a phone you will enjoy, and use it! Unmodified!!! Welcome to pre-Treble part1a . Expect a few years of growing pains.
I like my phone and enjoy not having to worry about whether a custom ROM will work and constantly be chasing updates and fixes. I use a case - I believe it is this one

which, so far, has protected it from several minor falls. I would never use any phone w/o a case!!!
But i think if the phone gets unlocked the bootloader and flash twrp making a backup of the stock recovery before just booting the twrp custom recovery then flash magisk on twrp on top of Stock PIE , After Of Course Make A Full Backup Of all partitions reboot and then on Stock PIE have ROOT. and never flash custom roms and never lock the bootloader and stock can be reflashed without problems with a script on linux with fastboot on bootloader-fastboot mode this plan can work , NO ? i had a E4 sprint and never had problems doing that

Can Anyone who is reading this have done this just root pie on this phone with unlocked bootloader ? and able to restore stock flashing it back with the retail firmware just to remove root and clean the stock and recovery ? or try to put android one ? the phone which im going to buy its the XT1900-6 retail brazil i already have the retail stock official pie rom ready to flash and with the script on linux with no fastboot oem lock anywhere .

I posted a new thread on these OTA issues with the X4 at https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/help/ota-update-endless-fail-loop-ppws29-69-t4045771. I was never presented with an "option" to install the latest OTA, it just automatically attempted to install (apparently a FORCED update) and is continuing to do so and failing ad infinitum. That phone works, just getting constant failure notifications. Question is, how to stop the attempted updates?
The second identical phone (updated per Magisk OTA tutorial instructions) is borked, with no phone connectivity. Can these be recovered by wiping/flashing stock rom PPWS29.60-39-6-2 and get them operating again as stock? I can forego the OTAs if there's a way to stop them from screwing up the device.
I never had other than stock recovery on either of these phones, I always boot TWRP via fastboot to do mods.

As to whether "x" strategy will work, you are certainly free to explore that on your own, in your own thread.
No one here knows. I am certainly not going to experiment on my own phone and run the likelihood of having to buy a new one. Folks like yourself keep showing up and doing just that because they are SURE it will work. But it hasn't.
Read all the posts.
There are very few folks left here on this forum. Once they have destroyed their phone, and tried a bunch of things, they move on.
THERE IS NO SOLUTION.

I personally know nothing about the phone other than what has been posted by others.

I've literally put so many different custom ROMs on this phone. I've bricked it, unbricked, hard bricked it and soft bricked it. Stop misinforming people bro. The Moto G6 I would say to be careful with but still I wouldn't make a post like this guy. The Moto x4 just requires a little prep to make it a full treble, GSI accepting, custom Rom beast. Plus there are a few official ROMs out there even Android 10 for the Moto x4 specifically. Don't be scared. Just research a lot and follow instructions

Can Anyone who is reading this have done this just root pie on this phone with unlocked bootloader ? and able to restore stock flashing it back with the retail firmware just to remove root and clean the stock and recovery ? or try to put android one ? the phone which im going to buy its the XT1900-6 retail brazil i already have the retail stock official pie rom ready to flash and with the script on linux with no fastboot oem lock anywhere .

Ims status not registered
Guys i flashed custom rom without taking backups of efs and all,so i ended up with ims status not registered because of that my volte is broken mine is retin.I tried to flash stock firmware but the imei is broken.Any way to fix this?
bumpsi since apparently folks are not reading this. mod a phone, likely lose it. relock a phone and def lose it.
