Sold my OnePlus 5 after 1.5 years - OnePlus 5 Guides, News, & Discussion

So , today , 3 days after posting ad on OLX India , I sold my OnePlus 5 (6gb model). I used the mobile for 1.5 years and had good experience with the device.
I loved batter life and smoothness of Oxygen os and dev support on XDA but could not stand the bulkiness and design of device when compared to current day designs. I had used Sony Xperia Z3 before and still think it was way better device than OnePlus 5 especially interms of design and usage and even as a complete package (Stereo speakers, multimedia apps, Water proofing etc..) . Some how I could not like what Oneplus offers. Oxygen OS is great but it is just bland and very minimalist. Last few weeks, I was using CRDroid rom and had fun. But I feel we get what we pay for and with OnePlus we get basic but high end feature at a reasonable price
My device has paint quality issues as spots of paint got removed with Spigen rugged armour case
I am a huge Sony fan and had used their live with Walkman, Xperia SP & Xperia Z3 before but sadly they are not selling very few devices and no latest flagship in India at all. I m left with Samsung and is planning to buy Samsung Galaxy S10. Suggest any other android if you can. I d always want complete package in a mobile and Samsung is only android manufacturer that provide great quality android mobiles now (yeah , I like customizing my phone a lot , and themes too ).
Thanks XDA developers for proving wonderful roms and community for helping me out with some issues I had in past. It was fun (frustration sometimes) while it lasted with OnePlus 5. I am attaching my last home screen setup and will have that as a memory

moved it but this was my general feelings of using OnePlus 5 and suggesting android mobile was just a small part of it. I had thought before writing this whether to post in General section or Q&A section. Since question part if very minimal , I had posted it in General section as a review.

XDA Branding: MBA study

Hey guys. Sorry to cross post this (not sure which forum is best) but I wonder if you might like to help with some research?
I am writing an MBA case study on the branding of HTC, calling it 'the best company you've never heard of'.
I have had HTC phones from the very earliest days, discovering XDA-Developers.com about 7 years ago; I owe the devs here so much for their ROMs and good advice (currently using a Jade with pda-viet's 6.5 rom, waiting for he passion to come out to try my first android handset).
Anyway, two things have always amazed me:
1. That a company like HTC has taken such a weird approach to branding (compared to motorola, SE, Nokia and, oh, I don't know, Apple?) and has only in the last year or so decided to start to invest in their brand.
2. That despite their relative anonymity, the 'tribe' that they have managed to assemble around them to promote, support and fix their products globally (that's you guys) are so incredible.
I was wondering if any of you might have any comments about either the branding/marketing of the company (any direct experience of them?) or your experiences of being part of their brand 'tribe'?
I'd really appreciate any comments any of you may have; would really help me to understand the company and hopefully a. get them better known through the case study and b. get a great mark in my MBA.
Thanks so much for any help.
Jo

I have also merged replies into this thread.

i think that one of the reasons they are sold under different brands is because they dont want to market the phones them selfves.
anyone think so>?
flyboy
It may appear that hTC have taken an unusual approach to marketing and promotion, but it is certainly not an unusual approach in business terms. In fact the concept of manufacturing goods to order for suppliers who have ready made and recognised brands is remarkably common. Of course most customers never really question whether the product is actually made by the brand name that appears on the case.
Many years ago when I did TV / radio repairs it was not unusual to find identical ocircuitboards and layout insude TVs that were sold under dozens of different brands. I'd say of around 50 brands I'd find maybe only 10 different circuits internally. The same is obviously true of hTC phones = many brands but all made by hTC but with different branded cases. This can be a good marketing strategy and is comparatively risk free if the deals with the brand companies are for fixed volume sales. If you can sell 10,000 units, but you don't have to market them or sell them to the public, that is a very stable and profitable position. Look at all the brands of flat screen panel TVs in the shops (dozens of them) but actually there are only a handful of manufacturers and most folk will never have heard of them. That situation nearly always changes though, once the product becomes a top seller. The risk of selling directly to the public is then greatly reduced - the high profile brand names having driven the initial public desire for the product.
Keep in mind too, that hTC were amongst the first to sell PDA/Phones with WM. A high risk position would have been to market these products through an unknown company. Far better to sell via high profile brand names. Of course, as these products have become more popular, it is now far less risky for hTC to sell direct to the public. This is of course what they have done in the past two years or so; the product is more popular and they now sell direct.
They have commenced TV advertising following the very obvious success of the iphone. It must have upset them greatly, to see Apple advertising as new products, phones which struggled to provide the functionality that hTC phones have had for years. But Apple do it so well and MOST importantly they market to the GENERAL public, not just geeks and business users. Riding on the success of the iPhone, I believe it is now felt by hTC, that they can also chase the popular, general public, market.
This does not of course mean good news for XDA-Developers (their unofficial support base). It may in fact mean that the whole process of support and development becomes more official - teams of paid developers etc etc. This could mean that the old voluntary developer type forum becomes something they no longer wish to unofficially support. We will need to wait to see whether success brings more work and more to develop by XDA-Developers or on the contrary; a clamping down by hTC and M$.
Remember, mass market success is not about small groups of geeky developers sitting at home and posting on the net, it is about applications that will be marketed and officially supported and therefore controlled by hTC and M$.
Mike
PS
... hTC are a highly successful company - in fact phenomenal success in just a few years - I wish I had bought shares. We can all point at Apple's success with the iPhone, but really the idea of licencing your produts for use on devices made by other people is a better more profitable model. Look at how much more successful M$ has been than Apple. That is because their software is licenced for use on ANY PC made by anybody. It essentially means you get lots of other people to sell your product for you. (it almost does not matter if folk have heard of you or not) Of course your product must work well - and if competition comes along (eg Apple), you MUST improve or die.
Interesting
Thanks for your response; I agree with all your key points, in particular the danger of going mainstream regarding the dev community (particularly here).
I've attached an early draft of my report; would be interested in any feedback, particularly insights into marketing decisions and likely outcomes of the collapse of WinMo and the shift to Android.

Excellent work. ... and I could'nt find much to argue with... shame I like a good argument.
I suppose out of all the good stuff, a point I felt could be strengthened is the one where a conclusion seems to be drawn that hTC will move away from WM. Yes, we know about Android and yes we know about iPhone but I'm not sure the case is made that hTC will abandon WM/M$. You may well be correct of course and I do recognise the possible departure from the "Tribal" developer communities in the future.
I think moves away from WM may be progressive but not necessarily final. Hving said that the whole OS for mobile market is not a stable one - who would have predicted this three years ago?: (let alone the stunning almost overnight rate of change)

Of course, and this a point that can be made I think, the iPhone did not simply claim market share from WM it actually expanded the market. ie They have increased the overall size of the market without necessarily reducing sales of WM. Market share is therefore a very misleading figure as in a sense WM is still selling as much as before, just that the market has been doubled (pure guess) in size.
So not a critisicm but perhaps to add a little ooomph to the conclusions, maybe just a bit more in the way of trend facts/statistics to prove the direction of travel (afterall you're preaching to the largely converted here, but I wonder how convinced a hard-bitten academic outsider would be??)
Nice work, I actually enjoyed reading your monograph and that I cannot say about lots of research pieces

PS... minor thing - from memory the last sentence on p13 I think it was, needs looking at - words have got jumbled somehow. (I know it's a draft)

Nexus4 Body case defect ???

Dear Nexus User,
I finally found people who are discussing those two nubs !!!
I also read another post which discuss this issue and I actually totally disagree with the function of those two tiny nubs are actually the upgraded of the phone:silly:: stop sliding on the surface ? or helps the sound comes out better ? As someone mentioned already they are not even noticeable, and they are tiny ... so if they are tiny and not noticeable how could that be possible to help with those two issue? And Also there are no official announcement from Google ( Please share the link if anyone find the official announcement from Google ) . I feel like if they really are the upgrade of the design, it'll be a little absurd because I don't think the tiny nubs works that way....except giving you a weird scratchy feel when you holding it.
In my case I already filed the phone back 3 times. If it is really a new design, the SC or specialists from Google would tell me instead of letting me keep filing the new replacement. In fact, I had talked with their adviser, and the respond was the tiny nubs are not supposed to be there.....
I am trying to argue with anyone.....So... peace out
So my feeling is the entire production line has some issue and no one notice it ....

If tweaked design is for the stability of the phone on flat surface, where it shouldn't slide..then i think that would be majorly for the people who do not use cases. I always have a case on so these nubs do not make no difference at all.

How can two perfectly placed nubs on, not one but 3 devices, be a defect?

Isn't it coming from disassembling the case part at the factory ? that's why it has on every phone and exactly same position
Wow dude you are picky. Anyways, they DO help the sound, try sliding the phone off the edge of the table just enough to get the nubs in the air, there is a difference in the sound. Secondly, they don't even kind of look like a defect, they look like they are meant to be there. There is no funkiness or strange casting lines indicating otherwise. Third, why is this such a huge factor to you? You said you use a case anyways... What am I missing? Check your other phones, my fascinate has a bump around the speaker and so did my G1. I don't know why Google would feel that they have to publicly announce something this minor.
I happen to like my nubs

You know that the people that answer the phones for Google don't actually work for Google right? They are an answering service contracted by Google to be customer service reps so they have no real info to give u. I learned this during the great limbo days after I ordered on release day November 13th during my multiple calls to Google.

Big Changes coming. go to last post to see!

If you don't want your ROM on here let me know (on private message). I will gladly remove it in less than a day! Thanks.
ROM Users!:

ROM review's by personal experience!
My Mission
My mission is to provide a easy decision for new users to pick on ROM's providing best Fluidity, Customization, and Stability. This will make up the grading guide for these ROM's and this is not meant to pick on ROM developers since they spend there free time providing free work for users like you and me to use and so there contributions are greatly appreciated. I test these ROM's for three days and write my experiences on here. This thread gets updated mainly on weekends.
Grading Guide
The ROM's are graded from one to ten. One being the worst (for me, not meant to hurt the developer) to Ten being the greatest. This will consist of Fluidity, Stability, and Customization. I will list my definition of these terms since sometimes they could spread unclear messages because your meaning cant fit my definitions at times. All notes added to these notes are not counted for the ROM score there just rants, so clarify these don't count against the total score.
Fluidity: Smoothness with no UI stutter while using the device.
Stability: The devices amount of app crashes and force reboots that occurs during use.
Customization: The amount of options to changing the UI and addition to features added.

ROM Review's
Name: MAHDI-ROM
Link: (Temporarily Unavailable)

Review: MAHDI-ROM offers great features and one of the few smoothest ROM I ever tried with keeping a aligned stock experience. It offers great speed with no catch to it with apps opening instantaneously and also boot up speed being around ten seconds its wonderful and excellent. The developer is always ever so nice helping out the users problems and try to identify them with logs. I never experience no hiccups when using Instagram, Google+, or YouTube. The battery life was a great point of the ROM getting almost three hours on screen time and eight hours of battery life with causal looking at Instagram and Google+ with brightness being at a quarter brightness. One point being ART is working on this and I haven't ran into much much crashes and no reboots at all while using this ROM. UI stutters only happening when going swiping down too quickly but, that's reasonable since it has to load up the data. I am amazed how the ROM has so much customization that you would expect from Carbon ROM for example and the customization menu is sorted neatly in a nice menu, but I sometimes find my self having to look for the wanted feature. I also noticed some parts that are scattered in the setting menu and to find the options you want at times can get difficult. I almost forgot one thing too, features. This ROM features Floating Window, Heads-Up, Active display along with other lock screen notification features. It does lack Hover but, that's replaceable with Heads-Up and much more.
Note(s): Nothing to say.
Score:
Stability: 8
Fluidity: 9.5
Customization: 10
= 9.1
This is so wrong. In so many ways.

this IS wrong. what you are doing is grading developers, who spend their own personal time on roms, who do not get paid for this, in your own subjective ways, in your own opinion. also, what you think deserves a 10, someone else will think deserves a 5.
End it.....

Ok everyone. I contacted forum administration to come and have this thread for review and check if its infringing any of the forum rules. I want to clarify it says in the first paragraph that there work are still greatly appreciated and its not to pick on ROM developers. The grammar issues happen since I was awake quite late in forming this thread (I live in the Pacific Timezone). I'm going to get those checked and thanks for correcting me. If the thread is infringing on any rule it will be taken down.

its not that its infringing any rules. its that the idea of rating developers, who work on roms and kernels on their own free time, without pay for it. especially rated just by you. rating them does not show any appreciation. basically, you also are not giving us accurate information. what you are doing is giving your personal opinion. opinions can be very off in accuracy. so its best just not to do it. and as you can see, already every response to you was unfavorable for starting this thread. all you are going to do is upset many more people. is that what you really want to do?
Until very recently, literally the past few days, Moderators would routinely close what we think of as "comparison" threads for phones, Apps, ROMs etc. The reasons we gave for doing this were that often such threads would encourage trolling and fanboyism. Also, comparisons are subjective; what suits me does not necessarily suit another Member with different needs and likes.
However, we have reviewed our policy and we have decided that Members views of ROMs, Apps and Phones, if they contain some level of analysis, can be useful to new Members or those who haven't yet tried them. It doesn't mean of course that you have to agree with the subjective views expressed in such threads and Members can express different views provided they do so in a reasoned non-trolling way.
We all compare things every day, we read or listen to the views of others before we buy things or use them. We probably don't just listen to one person but research different ponts of view before making decisions. Those who make ROMs, should expect that Members can express views on whether it suits them and what they find good and less good about them. Comparison threads must always be respectful to the developer however and must adhere to our basic rules on language and tone.
So we understand that many will be surprised we have changed our policy on this, but let's see if we can run this thread successfully. That means Members must respect each others views whilst expressing counter opinions if they disagree.
Note, this is not a comparison of Developers, it is a comparison of particular ROMs produced by them. A Developer may well have some excellent ROMs, but also some that are less good than one made by another Developer, accepting of course that a ROM can be good for one Member but not for another.
This thread and other comparison threads will succeed only if Members always respect the Developers and support their comparisons with as much evidence as they can. Also note that if a ROM comparison thread exists in a forum, it should be used rather than creating several different threads for the same purpose.

It's not infringing any rules, but it's just morally wrong towards those few people who actually do some work around here.
Another point is that this system of rating is very subjective. Let's take Mahdi ROM as an example (since you mentioned it), it's definitely one of the best ROMs around here, with almost every feature and customization option available out there, but i would never give it more than 8/10 for fluidity, nor 10 for stability. Someone else will come and rate it different. It just doesn't make any sense, and leads to nowhere.
Some people want more customization options, other are looking for simplicity, some others want battery life, some use hotplug in kernels, other don't. There is no one size fits all

This a comparison of ROM's on terms of Stability, Fluidity, and Customization. I don't mean to have the best 'ROM' when I rate them it doesn't mean there the "best". I'm pretty sure people will look at the rating for Stability, Fluidity, and Customization. The average is just there to have a fit score. Again, I don't mean to pick on developers since they work hard on there software.

I'm using my experience from these ROM's. When in my use I never had much crashes maybe like four but, that's it. I will mark of Stability to eight. I don't rate hotplug since that is kernel side. I'm sure mainly some people are not going to look at the average score but, the sub scores. Again, as stated below and above, I don't mean to pick on the developers since they spend there free time on there software and its greatly appreciated.

Will I just got mine in September 6th. I believe this is a issue on my end since I would keep lots of apps open. Not a rom crash, app crashes. I might revise that a FC instead later on. I would experience these FC when I get on Google+ mostly and once in Instagram.

Update on the launch:
Friends,
A lot has changed in the past 24 hours. When we announced the launch of the OnePlus 6T on October 8, we were convinced our timing would allow us to maximize the amount of people we could reach with our message. That changed when Apple announced they would be hosting their own event on October 30. We know the entire industry and all media will be holding their breath. So, imagine how we felt when we learned the date of their latest event. One minute, we were preparing for our greatest and most exciting launch event yet. The next, we were posed with a difficult question: “What do we do now?”
In any pursuit, you can only play the cards you are dealt. We were dealt a pretty bad hand. Our challenge was to find a way to make the most of a bad situation. For months on end, hundreds of people have poured their hearts and souls into creating our best product to date. Our goal is to make sure it gets the time and attention it deserves.
We couldn’t make this decision on our own. For hours, we talked to our press contacts to gain insight into how Apple’s announcement could affect the launch of the OnePlus 6T. We received considered, honest and thoughtful feedback. They showed us that if we chose to stick to our original timeline, launching the OnePlus 6T on October 30, we would be overshadowed by Apple.
But, we know the most important voices are yours – our community. We talked to some of our most loyal users, knowing we could not make a decision of this magnitude without your input. Because we know you would be most affected by this change. Flight tickets have been booked, hotel rooms reserved, and plans made. Internally, we were incredibly divided on this decision. We debated for hours before we came to one of the most painful decisions we have ever made.
As ambitious and passionate as we all are, we have to acknowledge the reality of this situation. There are no winners here. Over the course of almost 5 years, we have been proud to witness the rise of one of the most passionate and powerful communities in all of tech. But, we have to remain realistic. We have only just begun our journey and cannot afford to let one of the most important products in our history be affected by another great product launch. So after deep reflection, we have decided to move the OnePlus 6T Launch Event in New York City to October 29.
We are moving the event a day early so we can all experience the latest technology, together. To those affected, we know sorry isn’t good enough. So, we will do everything in our power to make things right. Starting with those of you who own a ticket, but won’t be able to make the event. Everyone who owns a ticket will be able to apply for a full refund for their ticket.
If you’re still able to join our event, first of all: Thank you! We will cover any costs you might incur to change your plans. If you need to pay to move your flight, we’ve got your back. Same goes for those of you who booked a hotel or made other arrangements. Our team will be getting in touch with all ticket owners individually to help you out.
We hope that you will understand our decision. If you are willing to help spread the word and make this our biggest event yet, we would be incredibly very grateful if you could share the news with other OnePlus followers. As we continue to grow, we will continue to challenge this industry together. We can’t wait to unveil the OnePlus 6T. It'll be a big week in New York. But, we’re ready to Unlock The Speed – hand-in-hand with you. Thank you for supporting us! See you October 29, at 11AM EDT.
OnePlus Team.

How could this be legitimate? They would lose more money then they make selling the phone so I do not think this could be legitimate.

Amazon screen attached and the link shared above :good:
I hope there are similar bundle deals with free USB C earbuds for the rest of the world.
Not sure whether Pixel 2 camera was ported to OnePlus 6.. but can OnePlus 6T be ported with all Pixel 3's features like Top Shot, Night Shot etc?

Amazon is the official seller for OnePlus devices here in India so everything i posted is legit. I have already shared the amazon link for the offer.
Do you know anything about the T-Mobile venture? Will it affect people like us who want unlocked bootloader's?
Will the in-display fps be fast enough...?
I've heard that it'll be an Optical reader and not an UltraSonic one.
Aren't optical readers slower?
Hearing rumours that it's gonna have THREE Cameras at the back.
I wanted to buy the RED color 6T. But, sadly OnePlus releases other colors like Red after 2-3 months of launch. Cant wait so long

Yeah optical readers are slow. But i guess oneplus will definitely optimize it. They try to squeeze speed out of everything.

No it has 2 cameras. To be honest, it doesn't make sense to have multiple cameras unless you have software to use it. Best example is Google pixel series. Even new mobiles are struggling to match it.

I'm going to buy one at the beginning of December. Really excited excited about it. TBH it's the best thing to buy with stockish Android next to a Pixel. I'm just hoping for some improvements in the Camera department.

Velvet Themes - Support & Feedback, Communication

Hey everyone! So after a bit of a break I'm back and I've brought along some new themes for everyone to enjoy! Some of you may remember me over the past few years from various LG devices. So what the purpose of this thread is, is to provide support, feedback and allow me to communicate, interact and discuss my themes with all members of xda. I know that a lot of people now are pivoting to telegram but honestly albeit convenient it's just not as good for people to find things. With this format other members can view the thread and see suggestions or issues that have been brought up or add their own. I much prefer it this way and with all of my other threads I've found XDA to be the best way to provide support and gather feedback from members all over the world. There are a few rules that must be abided by. First, the purpose of this thread is exactly what the title states; "Support, feedback & communication". It is not to generate sales/revenue and as such I request that no paid links be posted. I understand some people like to make life easier to those who can't find a link but I forbid this as does XDA rules. XDA rules (11) states that
Don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. Proprietors of for-pay products or services, may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or a free version of their product for XDA users and to offer support, but not to post with the intention of selling. This includes promoting sites similar / substantially similar to XDA-Developers.com.
So let's keep it that way. Next, I don't mind if you ask me about eta's. I know some people get quite fired up about that but it doesn't bother me. This doesn't mean that when you ask, that one magically shows up. My life has become much busier than it was in the past and I spend considerably more time creating themes than I did when I first was making them for the V20, G6, V30. After those devices it became possible to theme more elements and I also believe my abilities improved. So I really try to focus on attention to details. Next let's have some fun in here. After all this is supposed to be a fun hobby that we all share (customizing our devices). I absolutely love screenshots so if you want to post some of your home screen setup while using my themes, by all means show off your creativity. Lastly be kind and courteous to each other. If you've read this far I thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing your input and feedback. Update info:
In closing some of you may ask about (insert theme name) that you used to use on your old (insert name) device. Some of these themes are anywhere from 2-4 years old and honestly they likely won't be. After about a year or two I normally stop updating a theme. Some themes in all honesty don't require updates. More on that in a bit. But here's the thing. LG has an interesting way of doing things. So for example let's say you used pixel experience on your G7 of V40 and you liked using it. Sure I could technically update it to work on the V60. But by doing so it would cause it to stop working on the G7 or V40. That is simply not fair to do to those who have not changed their devices. I've tried to make it work in the past and it always causes more harm than good so for that reason I generally avoid that. Back to update frequency. As I was saying, not all themes will require frequent updates. A theme sometimes reaches a point where it is pretty much bug free and eventually it runs it course and I don't just update for the sake of updating. An update serves a purpose of either improving of correcting something and sometimes less is more.
Now for my first theme which has an optional add-on system icon pack:

So I really debated making this theme for a long time. I had the odd email here and there over the years asking if I could make this and I always politely declined. But I decided finally to do it... Why not right! Anyway I think this turned out pretty well and it has dark and light mode styles, icons and wallpapers. When you want to switch switch to default theme, then choose either light or dark mode and reapply the theme. If not the icons won't take properly. Here's some more screenshots if you'd rather look at them longer than shown in my video. Anyway I hope you like it! I'm honestly not sure how many more LG themes I'm going to make. It seems with LG discontinuing their mobile division that interest in themes has died down quite a bit.

Really like this theme. One thing i would like to know is if you could update the brightness slider for android 11. Other than that excellent theme. Thanks for the LG support
Well this by far is the quietest LG themes thread I've ever had sadly. Anyway folks a couple of weeks ago I made another theme and I never announced it here. Anyway this is it here. Check it out. I hope you like it. I honestly don't know how much longer I'm going to continue making LG themes. I've been doing this for a very long time and interest is really dwindling now and I just don't know if I'm going to keep going for much longer.
