USB host issues - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I have a bunch of USB drives as one does and most are formatted in fat32. I have the official Samsung otg adaptor that comes with note 9 and i plug in the NTFS USB and it says it needs to format. This is expected. I plug in a fat32 drive and it opens up nicely and i can view and edit content on it.
Now I have 2 identical Kingston metal USB flash drives that I purchased together. They're both 32gb and both formatted as fat32.
One is detected by my note 9 and works perfectly, the other simply doesn't get detected.
Both these drives work fine on an older note 4 BTW.
I noticed that the drives also worked fine on my mibox until I updated it to Oreo then the same thing was happening.
I understand this is not specific to the note 9 but it's probably because of how the newer versions of Android detect USB. I can find nothing about this and it seems few ppl care as few ppl use their device as a workhorse in the way I do.
Most ppl say just get another drive. Why? It works on everything except newer Androids!
Please help me figure out what is the cause, is it simply some flag in the file system? Is it some autorun.ini?
Are you experiencing the same problem and have found a solution?

I feel you. I have run into this issue on mobile phones & pc/laptops. I can't seem to find a reason as to why the same drives formatted the same way behave differently. I'm not a pro at this but have found some tricks for PC's that work but even they are a crap shoot. For sd/micro sd this app when run on a pc before using the card in your mobile phone corrects wonky cards most of the time for me...
https://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/...l-to-restore-full-capacity-on-sdhc/sdxc-cards
As for USB sticks the only thing I've been able to do is reformat to manufacturer suggested specs along with running check & fix errors but this also seems to be a luck of the draw. I've never found an honest to God guarantee as to what the issue is caused by in years now. I can usually get a pc to read an undetectable USB stick with a tool called (usbdeview). I Uninstall any USB related memory sticks/cards with this app and then reinsert the USB stick then it'll usually read after that. I would also love to know a real 100% cause & fix for this, and if I come across anything I'll be sure to mention here. Maybe something I have said may spark an idea with someone & we can both cure our need to know.

Have you tried any app for opening NTFS filesystem? Find one on Play Store.

Thanks for your reply.
I have never had any issues with reading cards on a PC or even USBs on a PC. It's solely newer Androids. It's as if they've locked the system up tight.
I'll def keep the programs you mentioned in mind as they may be useful later on.

Hi!
Yes I've used that app but as I said it's expected that NTFS isn't supported by Android but it is not expected that a USB drive formatted in FAT32 is simply not detected by the phone when it works perfectly absolutely everywhere else! even in cheap Chinese MP3 players and car audio systems and a PS3 which is the most finicky thing when it comes to USBs.

How do you connect your USB drive to your device? Via OTG connector or inbuilt micro-usb?
And have you tried exFAT format?

I connect via OTG USB adapter. Off topic question but which formatting option allows for the biggest single file size? I heard the biggest fat/exfat/fat32, whichever allows for the biggest file size, is only a fraction of what a 512GB microSD holds since fat type formatting only holds a certain individual file size, and thus you can only record in 4k video for a short time. Is this true or was I mislead?
As for Android becoming more restrictive and locked down this seems to be a fact and I hate it. Samsung is becoming notorious for this bs now. I think it's more due to the phone manufacturers and not all on google/android. I love android but iPhone is definitely becoming a consideration for my future phone again, or at least an Android that is a guaranteed rootable model.

Max File Size on NTFS around 16 TB while it's 16EB on exFAT! Only FAT32 has 4GB max file size. Max files on FAT32 is also limited to little less than 4.2 million. exFAT is an extension to FAT32.
Given 9 MB/s data rate for 4k60fps on Note9, 4GB would be utilized in less than 8 minutes. However, Note9 default camera app limits 4k60fps at 5 minutes and 4k30fps at 10 minutes to prevent heating no matter what filesystem.

Although the limit is not a problem for me (I can always press the recording button again and I don't prefer recording long sessions in 4K), you can use Zero Cam Mod (Exynos) for removing the time limit. You can root Note9 as well.

I've not tried exfat as it's incompatible with most of my other devices and I like to use fat32 as it works on all devices. The 4gb limit doesn't bother me as I have a media server for video files, the small USB drives are solely for work and files rarely exceed 1 GB.
I use the official Samsung otg adaptor for note 9 and I have a couple of knockoffs as well that work identically.

Honestly I find it's Android and not Samsung who is restricting stuff, Samsung has added Knox but rooting a Samsung is easy as pie thanks to some modders.
Fat32 has a 4gb limit. Other modern filesystems have effectively no limit in size (the limit being so large).
I doubt I'd go back to iOS cos Apple keeps adding more and more ways to pay for things Android already has. I liked the new iPad but it bends! I'd rather have a powerful PC at home and a note 9 for portable work. That's why the USB crap is bothering me so much!

I'm guessing you are talking about rooting a note 9 exynos or the n9600u or something close to that model, it's a snapdragon model but I cant recall exact phone, I have read about it as I'm itching for a working root for mine. If you know how to root a note 9 snapdragon SM-N960W Canadian variant under ESK (Eastlink provider) 128gb/6gb please point me in the right direction. Been waiting & some promising work has been done but no success on my model from what I've seen so far.
As for Android becoming more Restrictive I agree. I don't like the way things are evolving at this point. Phone makers too. I wish rooting and bootloader unlock was a given or mandatory. That would be my #1 dream when it comes to cellular phones. One note 9 complete that coincides with rooting is the volume on the note 9 I have is waaaayyy to low. Cable, or Bluetooth, neither feel like your in a club or bar with DJ. I want root mainly for viper audio. Best audio eq and its close to studio sound & you can get sound that will deafen you if you'd wish to be deaf lol ?. I don't care about knox just want root. If it was Android that's causing USB issues wouldn't it be a more touched on topic in xda? I'd guess a Lot of people would be pissed.

I'm not having OTG issues, was trying to help another member with OTG & USB issues. I use provided OTG adapter & have no issues currently.
Thanks for the file format/file size/recording time info. I had read on the topic a while ago but didn't know all the details as you did, much thanks. The heating issue while recording lengthy 4k video is that due to CPU or GPU or BATT? I heard of the older note phones becoming pocket fires and had to be recalled. Think that was an unrelated battery issue but not sure.
I can't root my model that I know of. SM-N960W Snapdragon Canadian Model 128GB/6GB. Know of a root for this model? I don't care about warranty or knox so no issue there.

Oh I guess I was confused when you replied me while I was replying OP.
Regarding the heating issue, I think it's due to the load on CPU caused by processing too many frames with very high resolution. This can further cause high battery consumption. Samsung responds to this query for Note8 as:
When recording videos or using the streaming feature for extended periods, or when using features/apps that require more power, the device and its battery may temporarily heat up due to increased battery consumption.

The infamous Note7 issue was related to faulty batteries from two of Samsung's suppliers as revealed by Samsung here. I don't think it's related.
Oh yeah, only Exynos and internal Snapdragon versions can be rooted. N960W's bootloader, like N960U, is not unlockable. Find FAQ answered here.
Hope I was able to help.

Successfully upgraded the hard drive in an 80G9 250gb

I came to hate this thing, that damn drive took forever to spin up and caused significant lag on the tablet constantly, I regretted not just getting a flash based one. So, this week I got bored and pried it apart. Pulled out the drive, used Gparted to shrink the partition to 120gb, copied that partition to an OCZ Petrol 128gb SSD, took it out of the metal case, and sticky taped that bad boy in. Tablet is amazingly fast now Movies load instantly. I never see that hated drive access indicator anymore. I shall see if the battery life is any better. Putting a mechanical drive in something like this was a terrible idea. I have some pics of the guts of this thing if anyone is interested.
yes upload photos, pictures of the tabled opened too. is hd sata? thank you
It is indeed SATA. Has an extremely easy to pull out of the motherboard cable that caused it to short the old SSD I was going to use. So watch that. Also, the original drive was covered in gold metal tape that was a beast to pull off, I suppose for RF shielding. I forgot to take pictures before I took the drive out. The only negative so far is that I now have that weird screen anomaly, which has GOT to be something pushing against the screen's back, I may have gotten a wire in the way. I will yank it back apart later this week to address that. Didn't have it before. It has TWO big batteries in it as well. In the pictures, the circuit board near the top kind of by itself is the naked SSD in the former drive bay. Motherboard is at the bottom, in one of them, you can see the bigger battery laying outside on my table.
Mega props to you. That's am awesome project. I installed a sad in my notebook and it was the best thing I ever did for performance.

I think that's just a universal issue with the archos g9 tablets.
You just got to re-position your router closer or use 3G dongle.

well, I bought stronger router because of signal, but no change. So I compare my and my colleague Archos G9 80 and samsung mobile and my tablet was about 30-50% worse...
Factory reset I tried
No idea id the non-hdd has it, I only own the Hdd model. Since my case is actually thicker, I imagine it doesn't exist in the non-hdd, and seeing as I. have no micro sd slot. There are physical differences in the models. I was looking at the mobo, as I wanted to upgrade the ram as well, didn't see anything that looked like a SODIMM slot. I imagine its soldered in. I will check again when I crack it to fix the screen issue. I will attempt aome sort of legible walkthrough when I get some time.

It's so much faster in this too. Battery life seems much better so far. Off charger all day, light use, at 75% now. I'm wondering if the HDD model has the 2 batteries to compensate for the extra drain. I found it odd that it has 2 different sized batteries wedged in it.

SSD's are faster and since there is no moving part they require less power to operate

Physical shape/size doesn't matter, I bet they have the same capacity (connecting batteries with different capacity together would kill them both soon)
way cool reverendbill! (and assuming rather broadly that you are clergy, good luck with holy week!) i am considering purchasing the new 1gb version of the g9 101 250gb and am inspired by your work. i am pretty clever with a screwdriver and an idiot with programming and would really like to know how you get all your data off the old hdd and onto the new ssd. please be as detailed as possible (i'm sure others would love to know as well) pm and email if necessary. thanks in advance for your time and patience!
did you have to do anything special to the new drive? I see you did a partition copy, but is that needed if you don't care about loosing whats on it? Right now, I only have two movies and a few songs on mine because I just got it and haven't done much as far as copying my media to it. Yet...
So I'm just curious if getting a new drive to work is as simple as formatting it correctly and that's it. Guess I'd have to format it under linux so I could do ext4 properly? Or will the archos format it just fine?
I tested battery drop after in 3 different gen 9 archos...one with original, one with a massive 1TB, one with M4 SSD...
No significant battery improvements...Giving it's not scientific test but still.
Every time I measured battery after one how of playing video and always had a drop of around 25% to 27% in both of them..
I also tried a hybride SSD/HDD seagate and same thing.
So please do the SSD replacement for other reasons; quite operation, less, heat, less weight, less failure. As af as speed and power consumption not very much to gain acording to my tests.
The only explanation may well be that since Archos is already pairing Flash to HDD and caching...the HDD is turned off as needed. Ran seveal speed test reading and writing...and did not see much change...I guess it'all just go thru the cache flash used by the HDD versions of Archos.
That was my experience. I reverted back to my 1Tb HDD..No gain for me with an expensive HDD. The hDD is very cheap and if it fails I can still replace it just like that.
Hey guys!

Sure... see above. You'll never find something like a SODIMM slot or similar inside cost sensitive devices like tablets. Please be aware that most of them are not x86 but based on ARM SoC's.
The architecture is basically very different to what you've learned from your PC at home (there's also nothing like a PC-BIOS).

I have G9 80 16GB Turbo. The plastic part of the inner micro USB feeder is broken and sticked out to the USB charger pin. My USB charger cable now blocked by that and cannot be use anymore. Now in the feeder just remain 4 tiny metals without plastic support (4 USB pins connector) and not able to take charge by anyway, bricked because of no battery power. It was just 2 months old and no warranty since I bought it in airport transit.
1. I've checked my Archos and did not find any screw other than single screw in the USB 3G compartment. I really thankful if you can write step-by step dismantle procedure.
2. Can you share the shape of USB type soldered to the PCB to enable me order the part and soldering it alone.
3. Thankyou in advance.

Solution to Limited Storage?

After ordering a 16GB Nexus 7 the other night, I've grown worried like many of you about how I'll fit all the data I need on my shiny new tablet.
After some research, I found that the best solution for extending the tablet's storage in the event USB host doesn't work out would be the Kingston Wi-Drive. I'm planning on ordering the 32GB version of this drive tomorrow unless any of you have other suggestions as how to further the limited storage in the Nexus 7.
http://www.kingston.com/us/usb/wireless/
So does this device create its own wifi network, or does it need a separate network to work?
Can u conform that it has a USB host .
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
The problem is these drives have short battery life (according to the reviews on Amazon), only about 3 or 4 hours.
90 bucks for 32gb is steep (newegg.com) perhaps you just have to consider what you actually need on the tablet, and not just dump whatever you may one day want to watch or listen to.
I am sure the good folks here will figure out a way to get us usb hosting.
Can you browse the internet at the same time? It sounds like this would take the wifi slot..

Take a look at the 500gb Seagate Satellite which costs similar to the Kensington Wi-Drive ($168 @ Amazon vs $185 for 64gb Wi-Drive; $83 for 32gb), but stores a ton more -- and it has better battery life (about 6 hours in my experience). The only drawback is that it is physically larger and heavier than the Wi-Drive.
If you buy a Satellite, you should consider installing the hacked firmware:
www.hackseagatesatellite.com. I did and consider it to be worth every penny. I've got >400 movies on mine, with something to please every kid. Every kid can watch his own choice in movies at the same time. I've been very, very pleased.
My solution is to use AirDroid and my computer. I just have to remove things when I'm done with them.

That's a great price... if it sticks over 4 days. It's new (according to the seller), but open box. I don't know this seller, but after buying crap on ebay for about a decade, my experience is that 3 out of 4 times when someone says, "new, never used, open box" means "used, but didn't like it." That being said $80 for a used Satellite is still a good deal, IMHO. Just decide how important a warranty from Seagate is before you buy it.
YMMV
EDIT: I remember buying a "brand new, unused" smartphone that arrived full of the seller's data, including the login information for his real estate company's website. I wonder if he ever figured out why his visitors were being redirected to a porn site for about a week...
The Airstash is popular with iPad owners. It's basically a wifi drive, like the Kingston and Seagate ones, except the Airstash also has an SD card slot, so it's expandable.
One thing about these wifi drives is that, for most of them, when your device is connected to it, your device cannot also be connected to the internet via wifi. There is one wifi drive, I'm not sure if it's the Airstash or another, that "passes through" the internet connection. So, while your device is connected to the device's storage, you also have an internet connection.
There is a newer version of the Airstash that's smaller (about the size of a pack of gum) and a little more expensive ($125 on Amazon for the 8GB and $141 for the 16GB). It might be worth trying to find the older model for a little less.
The hacked firmware on the Seagate Satellite has the ability to serve you files while you're connected to the internet by other means. The stock firmware (unless Seagate has updated the f/w) doesn't allow that (you'r either connect to the Satellite or to internet).

+1.
I asked eye-fi about using the seagate to get files from their wifi card and they said it wouldn't work. Looks like the hack will fix that so eye-fi can send files directly from camera to seagate.

$35 for the moded software?! Kinda steep.

I looked at the satellite but decided that the wi-drive was more portable and, according to reviews on Anandtech, has better battery life.
I'm sure one of us developers will figure out how to enable USB host for low-powered USB devices very quickly after release if it's not already enabled.

A solution to S4 Internal Storage Issue

I've seen a lot of ppl complaining about the storage capacity lately on the S4, it is understandable for us to install best looking games which takes up a lot of space and in less than you know it your internal storage will be full, it happened to me once.
I've found a solution to this, since apps cannot be normally store in external sd card well normally your sd card would solve this, but I've found an app called "FolderMount" for free on the play store, what this will do is move and mount the games/apk data from your internal to your external card being able to store many apps/games in the external card while having the internal sd card free of space.
Hopefully this will help some people out there struggling with internal space.
P.s. : This app of course requires root.
Also if you knew this, is ok don't spam me lol I'm just trying to help out some1 who might have this issue, thanks.

I am waiting for the possibility of a sprint 32gb s4 because my upgrade date is June 1. I suppose those of you that already have a s4 would have gotten a 32gb knowing then what you know now? What are your thoughts? Apply this hack or play the wait and see game for a larger capacity s4? I am fairly certain sprint won't carry the 64gb, but I'm hoping they will eventually get the 32. If they don't, then maybe I will wait and see what the note 3 is all about.

Not for $100 more, I wouldn't have. The hacks works well enough for me. The only app I've used it on though is Google Music. The rest of my apps/data etc only come out to 3.44GB of system storage so far, music comes to up 10GB on 16GB (aka 14.83GB) SD card, so for me the 32GB version is not worth the extra cost. Additionally, because I run Linux I've been having a ton of problems with the MTP connectivity even after installing the "Google-made" packages specifically for Android devices. It's easier to transfer items by removing the SD card and inserting it, than trying to connect and transfer items using the MTP connection.

I'm running linux as well and I don't have any problems connecting my phone to PC via USB cable.
What distro are you running?
I'm on 64bit Linux Mint14 cinnamon.
I had some connectivity issues wit my S3 with previous versions of linux but Mint14 took care of it and S4 is connecting just fine as well.

I've got a 64gb sdxc in my e4gt just waiting to be utilized in a s4. I might give it until July or August to see of they ever get the 32's out. It's a given 64's won't come stateside. I'm not saying anyone is wrong but I highly doubt 16 to 32 will be a 100 dollar jump. Maybe, I'm guessing, 50 at the most. Anything over 300 is my limit for upgrade price unless it's a spectacular piece of hardware. Just a wait and see game as usual. I'm afraid the active will be different enough to not be popular enough for the dev scene to have root and recovery, let alone having much of a selection of after market stuff like batteries and cases. I want protection of a case for extended batteries like the e4gt. I hope someone offers a decent tpu case for the bigger battery too. I saw a pic of the battery cover for the big battery for the s4 and it wreaks of crappy quality. Thin and ugly. I also know another alternative could be getting a second OEM battery with external charger. Just swap out when needed. Has anyone determined the hooks on the body and cover are like the s3 in which they need to be snapped together in a certain order, lest it damages the snaps? I never had a s3 but did see the video about how easy it is to damage the cover if installed incorrectly.

I Love this phone but....

I know we all love this phone, it is awesome. Super Fast, Super intuitive stock android, Super pretty, but lets be honest What's the one issue that Makes you want to get rid of the phone and never look back.
I didn't know how important a microsd card was to me until I used this phone. I used to have my entire music collection on my GS4 and while I still have online access to everything, I really miss not having to use up all my data and really being able to listen to anything anytime anywhere. Also pinning music for offline use through Google music sucks when you have thousands upon thousands of tracks and might forget what you have and haven't saved for offline play.
What's your issue that made you rethink your purchase for a slit second.
I knew there was no sd card going in and embraced it. I think it's easier to keep track of what's on storage and I obviously bought a 32 GB.
No complaints with the phone here. Well except I would have bought a red one.
Oh, ibl
Complaining isn't going to help.

For the average user, most phone companies now are not including an SD card on pretty much all of their phones (except samsung.) With cloud storage and high speed internet available at your finger tips, just stream it all. Google will let you store like 20,000 songs free and stream them. It may be a strain on your data plan, but if you're at home or the office, just use wifi.
The point of the fact is, if 16GB isn't enough, they make you buy the 32GB phone. If that still isn't enough for you, they recommend you use their services and apps to fill in the gap.
For me it's not having USB audio on stock.
Many people have no idea what this means, and even if they did it wouldn't matter to them, but to music quality snobs such as myself, it really irks me.
Especially because iphones have usb audio.
Cyanogen and probably some other roms support usb audio so it is possible to get with this phone
But I really feel this should be on stock android, and on every single phone.

To the OP, may I offer a suggestion:
Use a large portion of your internal storage to store the albums/tracks you listen to w/ the most frequency, and leave the online storage for the remainder. Obviously you can swap between the two whenever you'd like, but seems like it would make the most sense given the fact that you still decided to go w/ a N5.
May not serve your "any track, any time, anywhere" purpose fully, but will save you data and still allow you quick access to a good portion of your media.
I have to say, the limitation on storage does not bother me in the slightest. Sure it would be -nice- to be able to expand the storage, but in this day and age, data is getting cheaper and cheaper, and services that stream media are getting better and easier to use.
Why do we need more storage? how many apps are you truly going to install? how much music do you really need to take with you at all times?
personally, I have a network attached storage, which does owncloud. Through this, and the owncloud app, I stream all of my media to my phone wherever I am.
One could also use a service such as dropbox, or even just listen to online radio streams or even watch netflix for movies.
"The Cloud" is all the rage these days, and it's getting more and more cost effective to use such services. So really, why do we need an SD slot? why do we need additional storage?
I have a 128 GB USB drive attached to my key chain, and a USB otg cable in my wallet all the time... No need for an sd card here... Just wish there was an i r blaster

Yup, who needs an elegant solution like MicroSD card when we can carry USB drives and OTG cables :good:
your thread name is misleading. love is unconditional, period. if you have conditions to get your love, that isnt love. you dont love your phone. i love my nexus 5, with every perfection and misperfection it has
title edit
I have edited the title because I think I am giving people the wrong impression. The point I was making is that even though somthing is awesome, because we are all individuals and this is a mass market device there are bound to be things about the phone that erk us, maybe its only an issue to you. I didn't intend this to be an sd card complaint thread, Just a chance for everyone to vent their idiosyncrasies.
The nexus 5 is probably the best phone I've used/owned hands down. No regrets whatsoever
I definitely love this phone. I came from the Note 3 and do not miss that phone one bit although it wasn't a bad phone either. I have more than enough gigabytes (32gb) and if I felt that 32gb wasn't enough then I would of stuck with the Note 3 (which has expandable memory) or bought a phone that offered expandable memory.
I do not agree with streaming from the cloud as alternative unless you have a true unlimited 4g/LTE plan. Also I would hate to walk around with USB OTG as an option. OP next time get a phone with expandable memory or hope they make the N6 in a 64gb version.

I have a very large music collection. All of the tracks are in a mySQL database. I made a little bash script that randomly selects about 8gb at a time and copies the tracks to the phone. I am more than satisfied.

note 9 8gb or 6gb ?

hi guys, I'm thinking of buying a note 9 but I'm very undecided whether to take the model with 6 gb of ram or the one with 8gb, what do you recommend? battery consumption changes between the two models?
I have the 8 gb ram version. You can absolutely settle for the 6 gb. I have great battery life compared to my old Note 8

I'd be less worried about the ram and more concerned with the storage. Do you pan on keeping the phone 1 year or 2? Capture a lot of video? If so, will a lot be 4k? Plan on using DEX?
If 128GB will serve you fine then save your money. If 512GB suits your needs better then by all means, get it. For the comments about RAM for a phone 6GB is plenty for this phone but would definitely see a tangible benefit if you use DEX. Also, if you have access to the expertise and resources, swapping out storage on a smartphone is much easier than swapping out RAM. It's not the hardest thing in the world to change your flash but it ain't easy and takes good eyesight and good hand eye coordination, not to mention the special hardware needed to get your phone flashed proper like from the factory.

I went for the 8GB of RAM and waited 3 weeks past release day for it. The main reason I was set on the 8GB of RAM is because I had the S9+ which has 6GB of RAM and wanted to see if there was a difference and the only real reason to upgrade from the S9+ is the 8GB of RAM and larger battery, and I can tell you from personal experience I see NO DIFFERENCE in performance from the 6GB of RAM on the S9+ compared to the 8GB of RAM on the Note9 regarding how the phone performs. BUT I can tell you the battery life is superb on the Note9 compared to the S9+ and I love the larger screen. But your question was which RAM size, and I now I can without a shadow of doubt say 6GB of RAM and save yourself the extra $250.

year at the most probably. it has a lot to beat that the pixel 2 offers
I keep my devices till they die. I have one of the first Nexus 6p's and it is beyond dead so that's my only reason for upgrading. This is why i went 8gb in hopes to (somewhat/kinda) future proof myself.
Thanks guys, for me the storage volume of 512 GB does not make any sense and I prefer to use a micro sd that after every formatting does not delete everything copied the data stored.
If you say that between 6g of ram and 8gb there is not a substantial difference, then I take the 6gb and I hope that in view of future updates I do not regret.
You're not going to notice a performance difference unless you somehow figure out how to peg the RAM. RAM management in a smartphone and a computer are 2 totally different beasts. Where you might notice the difference though is the amount of apps you have open and how fast you can switch between apps instead of waiting for it to reload from storage. That is going to be the biggest benefit and probably not many of us will see it and that is a big difference, especially at how good Android is at multitasking. Plus two apps at once. And again, DEX probably has a noticeable difference with 2 extra GB handy.

for multitasking I find myself already very well with note8 (6gb ram), but the dilema is dex and check a pushed multitasking if it makes the difference, but I would like to be sure and not based only on the assumptions.
I have not tried myself as I don't have both versions. But on YouTube there are quite a few videos that show the 8GB version allows more apps to open. This has to be a huge plus especially if you end up using DEX a lot. I am still surprised at how useful Samsung made DEX. They turned Android into a very useful and friendly desktop experience. I don't have the itch yet, but am eager to see how well emulation works through DEX. That will be freaking awesome if no noticeable latency using a USB or Bluetooth controller.

4K 60 is recorded on internal storage. In fact I think it stores all 4k on internal. Not 100% sure though. Personally, 128gb fills up in around 3 months for me, so if you install lots of apps and games, and take lots of video, then 512gb is the way to go. It's never a good idea to rely only on SD surely. I haven't used an SD card in .. well.... 3 or 4 years.

Ok, but tell me this, every time you wip the phone if you do not make a backup first, you lose everything, so you explain to me what sense does it have a large storage if you also need to have a copy somewhere else?
for me it is simply ridiculous.
videos in 4k 60 also have a time limit, so I do not think that some videos create big files so they need a storage of the genre.
The only thing that interests me at the end is the ram.

even with my note8 I backup the computer, so what changes? only longer periods? no thanks.
We talk about ram and if price diffrence is justified.
as for the ram I do not find any tests on dex on the web
At the end of the day it comes down to you...
I personally, if I can afford it, get the biggest memory and RAM, simply due to prefering to having and not needing vs. needing and not having...
If you want to spend the extra $$$ then great otherwise don't. It can't hurt to have extra ram or storage and on my 8gb version I find DEX runs fine... It's more about heat than RAM... As the phone heats up I've had a few lags, but I use a 3rd party USB-c hub... Haven't played around with the dock as yet though I do have it...
