Looking at what has been written in various reports, the Note 8 should get it in January 2019!

You are reading about the S9 for ~January.
After that, there is the Note 9 (in the second wave of releases), then the Note 8 in the third wave of releases).
January....for Note 8, will not be happening. You are better off with April 1, 2019 as an April fool's joke.
Until then, you can still expect to get the monthly security patches.
The Note 8 will not get Pie until right before the Note 10 is about to come out. Just like when we got Oreo right before the Note 9 came out. Samsung is the worst on Android updates they are so far behind. The Note 9 launched with Oreo phones that came out a month after have Pie.
I dont understand why all the trouble about firmware updates, security patches I agree, but I get a device because I really like it as it is from the start, moreover, it is designed based on a certain android version, that is why sometimes the major updates create some sorts of problems, I really prefer the truly stable firmware the phone came with, but that is MY opinion

No. It is called "business". Samsung is in bed with your carrier to ensure you update the latest handset (so they both win).

I only buy flagship devices just to get the latest firmware updates (security patches and bragging rights). I just don't want a Vanilla Google device like the Pixel as I think it is incomplete. Google is "fixing" the fragmentation problem, so there should be no more "unstable firmware updates" as you are alluding to. If you were fair, you would admit that THOSE problems are caused by users who flash / update their devices, and don't perform a factory wipe, with a clean setup.

We got Oreo in March, and N9 released in August.
Note 8 SM-N9500 Dual SIM 256Gb pie update came yesterday! All OK, One UI is a vast improvement! The only thing I miss is the SMS widget!

I am thinking about buying it but I am not sure yet since I read that it's harder to develop roms for this device and I don't want to be stuck on android pie when the next android version comes out because of that. What I want to know is if it would be a good idea to buy it if I want to keep it for a few years (3-4) or should I buy another phone?
I can tell you this:
The note 8 is an excellent device, I think pie will be the last major firmware update for it from samsung , I skipped the note 9, as I think a two year cycle is adequate, in your case, it is ultimately about how much money you are willing to spend, you can get a new note 8 very cheap, but if android Q and the next one is of so much importance to you, then get a note 9 or wait for the note 10 that I expect to be formidable
If getting note 8 and want root and custom roms then go for SM-N950F / F/DS / N (exynos soc versions).
Stay away from the USA/Canadian versions SM-N950U/U1/W they have locked bootloader.

Thanks for the info. I am also considering to buy one since it's a well built phone and is cheap now. I don't really care about the android but Samsung gave pip on nougat so I guess I won't miss out any new features and I will have a secondary mi a1 which has been through rigorous flashing of roms:silly:

i'm in the Same case. I've Skipped the note 9 and waiting for the 10. And as you said, the note 8 is excellent "and can still run for a long time for all the peoples who don't care about the newest tech and the lastest useless features. I mean, why 3 or 5 rear Cameras when the note8 shots very well with its actual config. it's just an example
Is the battery still good guys?
Samsung said it will still hold 95 percent charge after 2 years is that true?
Is the fingerprint sensor really as bad as they say?
My note 8 is 16 months old, and the battery is as good as day one, accubattery reports that it charges up to 3325 mAh, and the fingerprint sensor is always accurate, it reads in less than a second, but this is MY experience

Android Pie will be the last major update for the Note 8, but it should keep getting security updates for another year or so. If Samsung doesn't release Android 10 firmware, then it can't be ported to the Note 8. There's no AOSP projects for the Note 8, so that won't be ported, either.
If you want to get a device that will keep getting new Android version updates, rather get a Pixel device. If you get the Note 8, you get it for the added features Samsung provides, and not because of their update schedule.
I guess, ultimately, it's down to whether you always want the newest version, or whether you want certain added features. Myself, I prefer the features the Note 8 provides. I'm happy staying on Android Pie for the next year or two until I decide to upgrade my device again to the then latest Note device.
If you shop around you could probably get a Note 9 for a excellent price. However if you are strapped for cash, then the Note 8 is an excellent device. I purchased the Note 8 shortly after the SGS9 series release and I am perfectly happy with my decision and will probably be using it until the battery starts to degrade.
Hi guys!
I need your help because I can't decide.
At the moment I have my old OnePlus 3 and this year it's time to change.
I can get the Exynos Note 9 for 639€ and the Exynos 10+ for 800€. Should I get one of this or should I wait for the Note 10?
What would you do?
Thank you for your opinions!

If you use SPen and the functions, there is no other device out there to buy. But if you dont use specific SPen feautures, i would recommend you the S10+ because of future Major Updates. Note 9 got Pie so gar, so there will be possible just one Major Update to Android 10 in future. S10+ will get Android 11 i guess.
Anyway my Personal opinion is that the Note 9 is actual one if not THE best device from Samsung. Okay they killed some core feautures with Pie like Wifi WPS and stuff..but Overall it was an good Update i guess.
I'd get note 9 oreo, pie is way to restricted
Photo's[emoji2398] by Sully using SM-N960U or SM-870A
if you don't mind Samsungs new screen design with the cutout, I'd get the s10+. and i guess since you ask between a note and an s-series, that you don't mind about the spen too much. so get the s10+. it's faster and slicker so I've heard in previews.
i personally couldn't get around the cutout tho. and that the new fingerprint sensor under the screen seems to act slower compared to physical ones
those are the two downside I'd say
+ that face unlock is pretty much useless, since you can use a photo to unlock it. but not sure if note 9's face unlock is any better
if you're fine with what i mentioned above you should just get the s10+
Maybe wait for the note 10
if they release the Note10 e IT WILL BE PERFECT
So samsung decided not to fix my note 8 and are giving me a choice of anorher phone a free replacement. So im takung a note 9 only if i can use my backup ,im worried ill lose all my data from my note 8 that they took away to dispose of .. i will be so upset if i cant use my back up on my note 9.any help here guys ?
If by backup you mean photos, contacts, documents....etc then all should be fine, don't worry
Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk
I mean the samsung cloud back i pay a monthly subscription for the 50 gig samsung cloud and the google account back up ,when i go into my cloud it says i have 2 backups note 8 and note 4,so im worried the backup wont be compatible with note 9 or 10 the back up was made with android pie on my note 8 a cpuple weeks ago .the samsung bcak up contains all my app, apps setting ,home screen layout, calender entrys, all my saved notes, all my files ,etc etc. I have a samsung account backup and samsung cloud back up .so if your sure i can restore all this note 8 data onto the note 9 or 10 then thats great.the new note 9 will be on oreo will the back up still work as the note 8 backup i need to use was made on pie
i defintly cant use my note 8 back up on my note 4 its impossible
The OS doesn't make a difference. I did note edge to Note FE and note 8 to note 9 with no issues.
The only challenge is app settings as not all apps accept settings restoration but all other content should be restored fine.
One thing to be cautious about is the backup size compared to your new mobile memory size as if the backup is larger, it won't restore.
Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk
So the os makes no difference? Can i keep the new phone on oreo as i hate pie using package disalber, and use my note 8 backup that was made on pie ?or would i have to update the note 9 to pie to be able to use the note 8 pie backup?also i think the note 9 has more memory than note 8 so the backup should restore?its all pretty confusing lol
lol [emoji1]
You can go ahead without updating.
if you want to make sure the mobile doesn't update on its own, make sure to disable automatic updates under setting, software update as well as under developer mode.

Turning off auto update in develpoper setting does not work.the phone still updates.so i use pakage dosabler now.last question i made a thread asking about using a backup made on pie will it resore correctly on oreo and everyone said no it will not work ill need to update to pie to use the back up
Try to restore and see if it will work or not. I have restored before with different OS's and even more from mobile to tablet and it works fine.
If you don't gain you won't loose.
Does anyone know if the Note 8 is getting any more major updates and if not is there any mods to get the latest software for the note 8?
Thanks

It wont receive android 10 or ui 2.0. Dunno about any ports for it from other devices
So I'm stuck with what's on here now. I just cant see spending another $1000.00 for a new phone. Its getting ridiculous with all these new devices coming out.
I think that S8 doesn't deserve Android Q because it has like 3 years old but Note 8 just had 1 year and 11 months when android 10 final was released.

Both the SGS8 series and the Note 8 were both released in the same year. The old differences is that the SGS8 was released earlier than the Note 8. That said they both run on the same hardware with the exception that the Note 8 has the S-Pen.

You know the Note 8 in Europe sells for about 329€ (VAT included) now right!? Buy a Note 9 (for 400 and something) and you'll get Android Q

This sounds good on paper, but it is still an "old" device (in 2020) that will soon suffer a similar (unsupported) fate to the Note 8 in a few more months.
I believe Samsung is in the business of primarily selling only new phones, so I suspect the Note8's performance may become throttled like an old iPhone in the monthly security updates.
I can't consider selling my Note8 to buy a Note9 for a few dollars more when they are basically the same thing just to get Q. I'm not yet seeing a feature in the Note10 to make me part with my money other than the eye-candy interface.
Q is not worth spending extra cash for. Have tried it on my N9 and N10 and went back to Pie on both. Just my opinion others love it. I still use my N8 and it is still one of the best devices out there in 2020, but let's face it Samsung only gives 2 major updates to a device so S8 Note 8 will not be getting it. Can it support it??? I'm sure it can but Samsung wants to make money by getting boneheads like me to purchase a new device.

Little chance. Remember that, Note 4 Operating system
Original: Android 4.4.4 "KitKat"
First major update: Android 5.0.1 "Lollipop"
Second major update: Android 5.1.1 "Lollipop"
Third major update: Android 6.0.1 "Marshmallow"
Note 8 Operating system
Original: Android 7.1.1
First major update: Android 8.0
Second major update: Android 9
Third major update: why not?

Yes both have same hardware but Note 8 has 6GB RAM and Dual camera and the S8 4GB with a Single camera. I think that a mobile that was release near 2018 by 1000$ deserved Android Q. Samsung policies must change in the flagship.
What's even worse is I'm running a Touchwiz Android 9 rom with Android 10 apps on my 6 edge plus. International device used here in United states with wifi calling..video calls..advanced messaging and volte. My point is if the old 6edge plus can handle this there is no reason the S8 or N8 cant. But I just dont see it happening. Many will read this thread and ask what's the point. But I like to see things like this talked about even if it doesn't go anywhere.

It's not financially viable to support an old device for another year... It might make people NOT shell out $1000+ for a new device if the operating system is the same & officially supported....
It takes a special breed to root, flash and enjoy the fruits of our labour that most people WON'T do with a device that cost a large chunk of cash. Hell, most people don't even know what Android 10 is.
The average consumer has no idea how, or why it's a good thing to use the latest operating system...
Yes this was the point I made before. It's all about $$$$[emoji16]. And you are exactly right, we are a rare breed on xda. Most people get a device because it looks good. Not because of battery..display..themes..roms...root..disable this keep that...camera...lol its shiny so I'm buying it.

I don't think those articles about the Note 8 getting Android 10 is incorrect. As the Note 8 has already received 2 major android OS updates. However we should still receive security patches for android Pie.
