Ok, it's not like I didn't had search how to do it, it's just that so far my search has been very frustrating.
First, my phone has stock rom, v. 12.1.A.1.201 with JB 4.3. And I just want to flash a stock rom (maybe a little tweak to make it smooth and faster) + root.
So I searched (maybe not too good) how to do it, and I found this: to install any rom, you need to have an unlocked bootloader, so far so good, but then when you search on how to unlock it, surprise! you need to be root to backup drm keys ... Ok then, I tried another aproach, maybe flashing from custom recovery, but then again to install a custom recovery you need to be rooted ... back to the begining.
So if anyone can enlighten on how to fulfill my very reasonable request, I would be sooo happy.
No need to unlock bootloader in order to flash stock based ROMs or for rooting. But for flashing custom kernels/ROMs that need a custom kernel, unlocked BL is a must.
There are many guides. Check through this index.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618222
It's sticky btw
Basically you have to (because you're locked BL),
1. Downgrade to 4.1.2
2. Root with DoomLord method.
3. Install recovery.
4. Flash a pre-rooted 4.3 ROM (.201) through recovery. Flash SuperSU update at the same time. Shutdown phone (NOT reboot).
5. Flash stock 4.3 kernel (.201) via flashtool.
6. Done. On rooted .201. Then install a recovery (because previous recovery got erased with ROM flashing).
#Details in guides. Good one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2727143
**Optional: Do a TA partition backup and keep it safe. Someday you can unlock the BL
You can follow mrhnet's post that helped me solve my dilemma! You can downgrade your phone, exploit root, flash recovery, flash SuperSU and then backup TA. Once TA backed up, the freedom is finally yours!

Can someone please help me..
I have an Xperia SP currently running 4.1.2 rooted, bootloader locked.
My aim is to upgrade to 4.3.3 and root, for which i will have to unlock the bootloader. To do so I need a TA partition backup , for which again, root is required.
So, my question is that is it okay if I take a TA Backup now [in 4.1.2] and then upgrade OTA and unlock bootloader, root and then restore the 4.1.2 TA backup onto 4.3.3 in order to restore DRM keys and Relock the bootloader?
Has anyone done this?
is it safe?

Why don't you install a recovery and after that flash a pre-rooted 201???

You don't have to unlock bootloader. You can flash a prerooted rom with built in 201 stock kernel

Just go to the Android development section, and you'll find plenty. You can also choose to flash a stock based rom. I went from 254 to existenz 3.3.0 (which is 201)

For downgrading see my tutorial in link below (flashing with flashtool)
For rooting that 4.1.2 see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375
and for CWM installation see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649923
I'd love to see you guys use search a bit more! This question has been asked a lot
Hey, i would like to update from ics to jb but what is the difference between using an ota and flashing a firmware from the sbf droid developers site or even here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239706
I have bootloader unlocked and ics rooted already if that makes any difference.
I recomend a lot install the jb firmware and not usibg the ota service, for avoid phone bricks, also, if you install the jb firmware with rsd lite, you have the posibility to return to ics without brick (i dont know why you will return but its a extra)

That's not entirely true that u cant go back when u have installed it by OTA update. With rsd and with ota update u will upgrade some files exactly the same way with both methods, that must not be downgraded. Those files are the bootloader and partition files aka motoboot, gpt, dns, ifwi and (bos?).
I recommend if u ever want to downgrade, flash all things manually. Flash the boot, recovery and system partitions only when going from JB to ICS and erase the cache/data partition or u will get a software-brick. Is fixable though.
But to go from ICS to JB (upgrade), I go with Marco for the rsd flash. Especially when rooted i think. There is a small change that u will relock the bootloader, but i don't know that for sure. However it should work with OTA in theory if u have stock recovery...
Thanks alot guys I updated with rsd lite and it worked my bootloader is still unlocked, but i noticed the when i boot up, the initial screen changed from the motorola logo with "bootloader unlocked" written, to a sort of warning notification about the bootloader being unlocked.
Hazou thats exactly what i wanted to know actually because i was confused about the downgrading process, seeing that many have hard-bricked. One more question, you say i must flash those files individually, but what about restoring a nandroid backup i made when on ics?

No problem, as long as u don't touch any of those bootloader files there is almost no chance that things can go wrong.

So, I am rooted and have TWRP for my recovery, running a custom stock rom. I'm wanting to upgrade to a new Lollipop ROM, but they all say that firmware 4.20.651.10 is required. I looked into how to upgrade the firmware, and all I found was that I need to get back on stock recovery, with a locked bootloader. My question is. . .can anyone help my get stock recovery with a locked bootloader again? I have the Harman/Kardon edition.

No, I'm not S-Off.
Pull the stock recovery from the 3.31 Full Firmware.

No need to update via ota, just update firmware & install a 4.20 custom ROM.

So that's it? I thought I had to go back to stock in order to flash the new firmware, even through the download available here on the site.
No , you just have to make sure you flash the full firmware and not the modified ones
Hello guys, i want to know if its possible to downgrade from 5.0.2 to a 4.x.x version? If you are s-off, it should be possible, although I've never tried it. You should be able to downgrade your firmware to whichever version and then flash the old ROM or run the old RUU.

Only got rid of root when I flashed stock rom ?
Yes, you flash full stock ROM. Bootloader will be locked and phone will be unrooted.
