I really hope Oneplus keeps improving on camera quality - OnePlus 7 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

I always wanted a premium oneplus device and this device is perfect. I love Oxygen OS, its my favorite oem skin because its has a stock feel to it with a few useful features. I'd love to get away from Samsung but Oneplus has more work to do on their camera processing. I took a bunch of pictures with my 6t yesterday and most of them came out pretty good. Then you have that one or two pictures that look weird,
Look at this image. It doesn't look right. It looks unnatural. Like a painting

Posted this on the op7 forums .. didn't actually thought there is a pro forum too xd

Is the camera really as bad as the reviews say?

I've currently got a rooted HTC sensation which I'm due to upgrade. My choice is between the HTC one and the galaxy s4, but my choice seems to come down to the camera quality. Is the one camera really as bad as the reviews suggest?
I havent got any examples that I can post but the quality seems much crisper that my previous device (Sensation)
Low light shots seem ok and auto-focus seems to work much quicker. Zoe is also a nice feature!
link to the review?
Why create a new thread? There's at least 3 threads talking about the camera....... :banghead:

Check out THIS thread and make your own mind up, i personally don't have any problem with the camera quality.

Are you just being lazy or just being a troll by opening a thread with a negative impact title? Hard to tell...Anyway, if really interested you could have looked at least at one photo thread which contains dozens of camera reviews.

No need to be like that, that thread has loads of pictures from all the one series. Not specifically the new one. And the various reviews I've read seem to conflict, some saying it's okay, others stating it's useless. Hence me asking for anyone's first hand experience with the phone now it's been released.
Start at the last page and work backwards, plenty of user pictures from the One.

Well, for serious photography I hang a DSLR around my neck and carry a couple of extra lenses in the backpack. For snapping a quick shot whilst I'm just pottering about or hanging with the guys the camera is far more than adequate.

Sorry man but today we have already seen a topic closed for plane trolling and in this context your thread title seemed a little out of line especially since there are already lots of user pictures and opinions available, i needn't speak about dozens of reviews. Didn't mean to be rude but next time better check first what info is available and maybe select a more appropriate title.
In my opinion i was expecting the photos taken to be a bit better but i am also quite optimistic about the fact that software updates might turn it into an excellent smartphone camera.

It's okay, not trying to bash the phone, just trying to find out which phone to upgrade to!
I saw that thread you're talking about and even commented a little, but unfortunately there were a couple of Samsung fanboys who turned it into a company vs company thread instead of just having unbiased comparisons between phones.
I don't have a decent camera, nor do I have the option to carry one around all the time since I'm normally dragging a couple of infants around with me, I'm not really an avid photographer either. I just want it to be at least as good as the one on my sensation since I do use it fairly regularly, but can't make my mind up on handset! I think I may have to just go into a phone shop and compare for myself.
Like I keep saying
The HTC One camera is an extremely well equipped camera, OIS, super fast shutter, low light ability, f2.0, wide angle lens, powerful macro ability, best HDR on phones, all combined gives a very powerful camera
However as usual with HTC it will still require manual efforts from ur side those camera settings are there to be used
Compared to your sensation its light years ahead of it, compared to the One X you loose something and gain something in return
Things to keep in mind always reduce sharpness in HTC cameras and for the One in specific auto enhance or contrast increase might be needed as well due to the extra light in its day light photos
But it's not match to the 13MP detail from the sgs4 camera purely in terms of resolution
I came from DHD, wife still has Sensation. We're in full agreement that the One takes much better pictures.

I am in similar position. For me which phone I choose next will be down to camera. One thing I missed after iphone was the way you cam trim videos before sending to get correct file size. As far as I am aware only htc on android can do this - forward to 1145 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23nQyOpixiU&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
I will no doubt get the one but camera is a worry as htc are not really promoting it in any adverts I have seen so far in uk. More blink and boom ?? Waiting for 64gb too but if we ever get it who knows ???
The camera thread is great but I am now info overloaded so really have to go test one in more depth.

Do you use digital zoom or lot, or blow up pics after you make them? IMO, this is the weak point of the camera. It's lens is 28mm (35mm film equivalent) and you don't have the latitude to zoom that you would with more MP. Personally, I am more a telephoto guy than wide angle so it bugs me, but everyone is different.
(I decided to punt and keep my S3 for now. Camera plus questions on headphone audio. Mixed feeling though, as I really like the low light attributes and boomsound speakers.)
Just wait until release and judge for yourself and decide if it's really an amazing camera.
I have never, in too many years to mention, used a digital zoom. Never saw the point in stretching one sensor pixel to fill 4, 9, 16 or more final image pixels.
Sent from my Tricked out HTC One via xda-developers application
Yeah, digital zoom is terrible regardless of the camera used. I do however sometimes zoom in on my photos, which I assume won't be much good with the one.
Afraid that zooming after the event won't get you anywhere with the One. Granted, although my phone's have progressed from being a phone/txt device that could play snake when I was bored all the way to a miniature computer that can make calls as well I've never viewed them as a camera replacement. Hell, you can get a little 8Mp snapper that's smaller then current headline phones for a fraction of the cost AND they've got optical zoom with a lense that retreats into the body of the camera when you put it back in your pocket.

HTC One vs Samsung S3 - audio recording comparison

Initial review and comparison after 1 day

Initial review and comparison after 1 day.
I am a self certified phone junky and a proud dad and here is my initial review and comparison between the OnePlus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S8,
Design.
Well this one is a no brainer the Samsung Galaxy S8 makes the OnePlus 5 look dated even though both of the screens are excellent in terms of contrast, viewing in direct sunlight the curved edges and form factor are a massive win for me with the Samsung.
Win Samsung Galaxy S8
Build Quality
Both phones are superbly built I was very apprehensive about the OnePlus 5 due to hearing lots of horror stories about the fit and finish of the product and luckily enough mine is free of any of these defects.
Win Samsung Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5
Features
The stock OOS has some very nice features such as gesture support, remapping the capacitive buttons to perform other functions and is very well laid out and easy to find what you need.
The Samsung is well a complete mess way too many options in way too many categories and you have to search to find anything as it can be buried very deep.
The vast majority of the features on the Galaxy S8 I do not use nor care for basically.
Win OnePlus 5
Camera
This is a big one after reading review after review I did not have very high expectations of the OnePlus 5 specially when compared to my other phone the Samsung Galaxy S8.
However until you zoom in the photo’s actually look pretty good as long as you use HQ or Pro mode (the HDR modes are very poor)
I am definitely not a camera expert and what makes a good camera for me is can it take a “Clear Photo” of my manic 4 year old daughter without any motion blur or other artifacts.
The camera on the Galaxy S8 is much better you can rely on this to take excellent photos every time you want to use it and even when zoomed in the photo’s remain clear, crisp with no water color effect which the OnePlus 5 has.
Win Samsung Galaxy S8
Performance.
This is very easy for me to state the OnePlus 5 is one of the fastest phones I have ever owned and it has none of the lag or stutter of the Galaxy S8 (why oh why with so much power under the hood does the S8 have stutters in the UI)
Easy victory for the OnePlus 5
Thanks for your summary which in many aspects copies my own experience (presently have both and have to decide which to keep).
I'm still looking for a good camera app from playstore to copy the excellent image processing of the Samsung camera app.
To add to the points above: from my comparison the OP5 is vastly superior in GPS reception to my (Eynos) S8 !

So how did the OP5 do at photos of your 4 year old? I have a 1yr and 5yr old and have the same struggles to get clear shots.

Oneplus 5 Vs Honor 8 Pro (Camera)....I am disappointed with OnePlus 5...

Hi,
So I recently pickedup Oneplus 5. I had Honor 8 Pro already. I was planning to sell the Honor 8 Pro and Make Oneplus 5 my daily driver. I was looking forward to "Dual Cameras. Clearer Photos"
But the moment I started snapping some pics, I was left dismayed by the sub-par, borderline poor image quality produced by on the paper very good cameras! The photos were full of noise and a lot dark! I expected good low light performance from a 1.7 aperture lens but in reality, the camera kept pushing the ISO and shutter speed to really high levels in very good and well lit conditions as well!
The night shots were so bad I didn't even bother keeping them. Why does such a GOOD on paper camera take such crappy photos? The fine detail is smudged up. The dynamic range is horrendous, HDR or no HDR. The lights get blown out and the darks are too dark to keep any details! Most pics come under exposed.
I am really disappointed. And from the research I did afterwards (I wish I had done it before...). It seems its an open-secret and Oneplus aren't really keen on fixing it...
Please check this Album. I have taken similar photos with Honor 8 Pro and then Oneplus 5.
I might add more later.
Let me know which one is better...

Always an excuse to feel better about your expense...
Well. I am not asking for PROFESSIONAL looking picture. See the other phone I posted has 4 less mega pixels. An aperture of 2.2 compared to 1.7. But still it takes sharper and less noisy images with greater detail and colour accuracy.
Lol just go back to the honor 8 pro then? I dont know how those photos came up that crappy but I get decent shots on the one plus 5. Try usin gcam.
Not sure what's to complain about. It's a cell phone camera of course it's gonna be pretty crappy. What about everything else about the phone? I get 8-9 hours sot every day no matter what I do on it. I think that more than makes up for a camera.
I Took this with my op5 and it's better than all of your pictures. Go get a professional camera and a flip phone.

I think that stupid argument has already been raised by one person. What are you comparing that shot against?
If you had a Honor 8 pro. You would have gotten a better version of it.
So please if you have nothing to contribute, stop barking non sense. I can also take great shots using mods and what not then tweak them on PC and post.
Edit: And if you consider complaining about poor camera performance on a flagship with 'Dual cameras. Clearer photos' tagline; then you should get the Fanboy of the year award!

Well you say ".. if you have nothing to contribute, stop barking non sense." , so.. what did you contribute besides saying that your honor is SO much better than an OP and just showing up Pictures where I dont think that an OP5 would shot SUCH bad shots and also These are just random shots where also half of These look very similar to me.
Also, you know, this is the OnePlus 5 Guides, News, & Discussion Forum, so yeah this is neither some News nor a Guide and also no Discussion as ist just plain complaining from your side.
So to contribute for the forum and all the People here im going to Report this thread and hope that other People do this too.
It's definitely not a secret that One Plus has a terrible camera app. My $150 Samsung Galaxy J3 could take better pictures, especially in low light. If the camera app on the OP5 wasn't such utter crap there wouldn't be a very long thread on XDA filled with people using the Google Pixel camera app on this phone. The OP5 is never going to be a good camera phone. One Plus only supports Camera 1 API which is very dated and limited. Google introduced the Camera 2 API on the Nexus 5X which I think was running Marshmallow.
If you want proof the camera will never be fixed just look at the 5T. One Plus did not tout that as a great camera phone like they did with the OP5. One Plus also ditched the telephoto lense in favor of a low light lense because they don't know how to fix the software issue with the OP5 camera. Like you said on paper the OP5 has great camera hardware. But One Plus doesn't have the talented software engineers that could actually take advantage of it.
I can't see myself buying another One Plus phone because I think they are a terrible company. Whatever phone One Plus releases is based on a model from Oppo. The difference? The One Plus version will have better on paper hardware specs and the Oppo version will have far better build quality. The Oppo version will also take much better pictures.
The build quality of the OP5 is lousy. My first one was unusable after about 3 months because of a defective motherboard and even though the phone was under warranty One Plus customer service and warranty repair is so horrible the only way I could get a working phone was to file an insurance claim and pay $150 deductible.
I was sent a brand new replacement phone and right out of the box the headphone jack was bad. I had to switch to Bluetooth because wired headphones don't work--the headphone plugs fall right out of the jack.
Then there's OOS. It's the programming equivalent of a custom ROM that you might flash on another phone. I do a clean flash every time there is a build update because dirty flashes consistently resulted in problems. A stock ROM should not be coded that poorly but it's an open secret that One Plus lost all of its best software engineers and the talent drain forced them to combine development of Oxygen and Hydrogen (the Chinese operating system) under one roof and all the programmers they have left are from the Hydrogen side. The problem with that is that One Plus is a very minor brand in Asia so they don't attract the best talent.
There aren't even plans to release an official version of Lineage Oreo for this phone. The OP5 was only sold for 4 months. If One Plus doesn't care about this phone why should major software devs?

Here ya go...straight off the phone.
Edit: Added another pic...?
The softness of Oneplus 5 main cam pics is a known issue (aka water colour effect); I have compared the pics from OP5 with LG G6 and Samsung Note 4. (My opinion = Note 4 was best). I was as disappointed as you are now, i suppose. However, since I had no choice but to use OP5, I found certain workarounds. Hopefully they'll help you too.
1) ALWAYS use manual mode for normal photos! (no need to tweak any settings, keep all on auto. Manual mode apparently doesn't use the same compression algo that main cam does => sharpness increased & noise reduction improved)
2) Check out the 100% jpeg mod in the forum. It's really works
3) Don't zoom in on every pic. I know it sounds silly but it's like a psychological itch you must scratch - don't. On the whole, the pics are pretty awesome if you just enjoy them as they are and not analyse too deep.
Cheers!
PS : Apologies for not being able to post comparison pics, I don't have those phones anymore. Just take my word for it

I had note 4 too and it took great pics.
Yes. I have found out that manual mode takes more cleaner pics compared to auto.
I am using the Gcam mod and it actually does some justice to the sensor on Oneplus 5!
I was thinking of using the 100% quality mod but I read it makes the file size really large.
I don't use the zoom feature though.
Thanks for understanding my perspective.

Camera Settings and Taking Photos

Ive seen some of the photos that other people have taken with the P20 Pro and they look amazing.
I'm no professional photographer and don't pretend to be one. I just want to take photos of my children when on holidays, days out, events and birthdays etc.
Every photo I take seems like a good shot, until you zoom in on the photo, then the image becomes pixelated. Another thing that seems to happen a lot is colour fading, every shot looks washed out or like it's lacking vibrant colours.
I've got the Huawei P20 Pro mainly because the camera was classed as the current best in mobile phones. I feel like I either don't understand the camera or that doing something wrong.
Could anyone offer any advice.
Depends on shooting mode and how much light you have. If I try to shoot in Aperture Mode in low light, I get pixelated photos as well. From my 1 month experience with the phone, I can tell you the camera is far inferior to that of other current flagships (especially when shooting pictures of people), mostly because of software overprocessing. It will usually oversharpen the crap out of everything (especially when using the 3x zoom lens) and will destroy skin texture (regardless of beauty mode selection). I get wildly inconsistent quality across. While some pictures end up fine, most will look a lot better on-screen than on a computer. Also, the pictures will almost always be brightened after processing, which means that what you're seeing on screen when taking a picture is not how the final photo will look. I'm coming from a Samsung S7 and its camera provided very predictable (and sometimes maybe even better than Huawei's) results, where what I saw on screen is what I got. I'm quite disappointed by this phone. They really need to fix their software, but I doubt they'll ever do that.
I tend to just use the standard AI and have got (IMHO) some lovely pics without filters or tinkering. I've started an Instagram of some of my favourite P20 Pro pics - not sure if we are allowed to link to them on here these days ?
That's what I've been doing recently and they seem better than before.
I think we can link pictures as it's not advertising.

I've just started adding a few of (what I consider to be) my best shots.
I will admit, those are some nice photos.
I think I'm going to take some outside shots tomorrow and see what they turn out like.
I'll gladly share them with you, for comparison purposes.
I have the P20 Pro since few months and i compare it with S9, S9+, Pixel 2 and IPhone X, i assure you that this device have one of the best phone's camera in 2018, you can also look in the DXOMark that is the TOP-1, i came from Galaxy S7, and S7 have a good camera very similar with S8 and S9, but the versatiliy of the P20 Pro is far from them, also if you take pictures in sunny days with the 40mpx sensor, you will see that looks like a professional camera, its true that sometimes the IA is overworking the scene, but you can disable on the screen easy
If you want camera samples, you can just check this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/hu...hotos-huawei-p20-pro-share-fantastic-t3774488
don't using 4000w

Camera quality is very disappointing. Doing smt wrong??

Bought this phone yesterday. I'm new to Samsung. I had seen and read a lot of reviews and articles, and all were very positive about the camera, but in my experience its very disappointing. Especially the front facing camera. It's always blurry, and what is up with all that smoothing out??? Even when it's off it just does the same. I haven't changed any special settings. After looking for a solution I see that I'm not the only one experiencing this. Is this just a question of taste, or is there really something "broken" at the moment with this camera?? I'm really considiring returning this phone. 1000€ and this is the picture quality I get?
I paid considerably less than 1000€ a week after launch, I think I'd return it if I paid that much. I've had some good photos from the camera and also less impressive ones, it seems Pro mode is the place to be.
Yes the selfie cam sucks. Too much post processing causing the smoothing effect. I'm not an Instagram model, I don't need to look airbrushed.
The rear shooters though can produce some really nice pics.
It's the software that causes issues. The hardware is solid.
The other option is to download GCam which uses Google's HDR Processing from the Pixel devices. It produces really nice photos. Some GCam builds have Night Sight working as well.
You might find this link useful for installing GCam, it seems to be a bit hit and miss, the camera works for a little while and then just force closes every time it's launched.

Welcome to the esteemed club of Note 9 owners! unfortunately a lot of us are already having this issue and understand exactly how you feel! there is a thread on here already about this: see below
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/help/galaxy-note-9-camera-sharp-t3835459
and trust me its annoying having paid so much for this device and then get this rubbish picture quality!.... and I bet you any money Samsung folks read these forums so whether its a case of "cant be bothered" or "working on it", no one knows!
I hear the point about Gcam download as an option but I really feel I should not need to download additional software to make up for Samsung's lapses. We buy this device cos we love it and desperately want it to work, guess Samsung makes them only to get our money... not rocket science who the real losers are !

Tbh I also paid far less. But still, one expects to get a decent camera for this price and all that marketing jibberjabber. How come all big YouTube tech reviewers praise this camera ?! Money makes them dance

I agree

Now if these problems can be fixed with future updates that would be great, but is there communication from Samsung about this? And can this be fixed with (near) future updates.

So you don't have any third party apps on your device?
I'm about to return my phone and get my money back.. But i'm still doubting. .. Can these problems be fixed with future updates? Can we expect a good stock camera app in the near future?

The only likely upgrade would be Samsung's take on Night sight, I wouldn't expect any miracles.
Guys, hey, HW is solid as someone said, i also have some issues with cam quality, i thing that we must wait till we have pie update and then see what changes. Like im working with audio eq and for example player FIIOX5 III sounds quite bad at beggining, but later firmware updates makes it much better. So i thing - wait for software update and then decide to do something with it or ask for refound.

thx for your input
It's been hit and miss too for me, coming from a Pixel 2 XL.
Things are considerably better since I use the Arnova's Gcam port (better than my Pixel 2 XL in fact), and it made me realize Samsung's app/post-processing is the issue, not the Note 9 camera/sensor
Samsung needs to go back to the drawing board and do something about that agressive, over the top post-processing. Like I said, Gcam produces way better, more natural looking like pics, and most of all, they're not blurry (faster shutter time with Gcam maybe?)

Have you tried the one via official XDA
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-port-hub/
Is there difference with the Arnova port?

More features like Advanced HDR+ and Night Sight are working for me with Arnova's builds vs the one you just posted.

Can you post some sample pics? This phone is consistently rated as one of the top cameras on the market and I have to say that I'm not disappointed. In good conditions it's hard to say that it's any worse than my DLSR with expensive lenses. Night shots are excellent too. If your rear camera is as bad as you claim, perhaps there is a hardware problem? The front camera does apply a lot of post processing (which I'm not a fan of either) but you can turn most of it off.
TLDR: either you have an actual hardware problem or insanely high expectations, the camera on this phone is just about the best on the market. When I say that it comes close to my DSLR, I'm not kidding.

I added a screenshot. Do you install the first one or the second one?
Edit: the first one force closes every time, and the second one doesn't have all options it seems, like night vision en HDR+

That's the one you want: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-based_v.1.3d_TlnNeun_2.apk
If it force-closes on launch, that's because it was installed over an older version, just clear data + cache and relaunch, it will work
Reading some of these comments . . . The stock camera app takes fantastic looking pictures IF the subject is not moving. Try taking a picture of your kid or pet doing anything BUT standing still and the photo is a blurred mess. Wish the shutter speed was faster smh not holding my breath on Samsung fixing it thru an update

Use Pro mode if you want to be able to specify your shutter speed, I find the raw's are pretty good once they've had some basic touch-ups.
