Importing P30 Pro from China - Huawei P30 Pro Questions & Answers

I was planning on importing a few P30 Pro's from China to the US. Have a cousin who sells phones over there on commission and was planning to help her out.
Will there be any problems with the Chinese version in the US? I assume I can load a google play store APK. I am using T-Mobile for my provider. I think the modem and bands for T-Mobile and the P30 would work too?
Hoping there wont be many problems. Thanks!

You won't be able to change launcher (well you can if you install a secondary launcher and remove the stock one via adb) and also you will be missing some lte bands.

I think the phone is missing band 66 and 71? Let me know if I am wrong. I know that band 71 isnt coming to my area in a long time. How do I check what band my area is using?

How much is it in China? L29?

so are there no problems with the China version such as plagued the Mate 20 pro? for example, google assistant and google pay work without problems on the china p30? is there another thread? I can't seem to find one

It'll be the same as there's no google support in china. Why don't you order from Malaysia or Singapore ? Its L29 global version and much cheaper. Pm me if you need some help.

Are you speaking from experience or just saying this because google play is not installed by default on phones and google is blocked in China? These were specific issues with the last phone.. google assistant and google pay problems.
With the Mate 20 pro, Huawei made it easy to install the play store (so that means services was also installed)

Playstore isn't an issue. Framework already comes pre-installed. You just need to install the apk however most sellers already do this for you. Almost all china models comes with google framework pre-installed now. In regards of the voice assistant when you press the power button, that i'm not sure if you'll be able to set google assistant. Main issue will be the obvious chinese recovery menu and a few bloatware and the ability to not change the launcher. You can get the launcher changed by installing a secondary launcher and debloating the stock one via adb. China version won't pass safetynet too.

With Chinese Rom you will get Chinese bloatware as which can be partially deleted from the face of it, and also some no delectable apps like Huawei voice assistant and browser, and you will spot some Chinese font here and there like contacts apps bringing up Chinese yellow book contacts.

People who buy Chinese phones like Xiaomi, usually get the Chinese version and install Google play or they wait for the international version?
Sent from my LG-D855 using Tapatalk
Doesn't really matter, if you get the Chinese variant you can always flash the international version of the rom, although their unlock bootloader process is a bit cumbersome. If you want it on the Chinese ROM it's not just the matter of installing Google Play, you are missing Google Services Framework so you need to get that first.

I've been looking around to try and find out if it's available and can be used in Canada. I found the Canadian site http://xiaomi-mi.ca/ that claims to be an official Xiaomi site but every phone on there has a 5 star rating so I find this very suspect... I'm also not clear on the whole band thing as some companies discuss them as Band 1, band 2 and so on, and some use 1700/2100 MHz and so on. According to http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_5-6948.php the 1700/2100 band for LTE is covered.. I think it should work no problem if I read this all correctly.

No seriously, this trumps the Mix 3 by a mile. I'm in Denmark, and there are some Honor phones sold here, but would it be any trouble getting the China version? And what's everyone's bet on whether or not they'll do an international version?
Ok bye you all rock
X2. Looks like US LTE bands are almost all there. Good enough for me on At&t
On gearbest right now. Haven't looked too much into it. I'll probably wait until the facial scanner version releases in a month or two. Deciding between this and OP6T
Odds on this one getting a Global ROM/release? I can't wait much longer....
Also, if I import this one, is it possible to add or sideload the Google framework and play store? Thanks
Available at https://tradingshenzhen.com as of a few hours ago.
@emilrune according to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLWRYJ0E3rY you should be able to install them manually.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a GDPR compliant EU version anytime soon. (not unless they remove Yoyo totally from the EU specific version). Outside EU? No idea. The phone did make an appearance on the global version of Honor's webpage recently. (https://www.hihonor.com/global/products/smartphone/honormagic2/)

Intriguing (or perhaps just a website goof on their behalf) re. the Magic 2 turning up on the global site. Thanks for the heads-up @Cerian. I am getting closer and closer to just say eff it and order the China version. I got a nagging feeling that this phone will never see release outside of China... But Google Framework is paramount to my devices, I have my stuff all tied up in the Google ecosystem.
Hopefully there will be a more global focused version. For T-Mobile USA, it is missing band 66, which is fairly common. Band 71 would be nice to have as well on something this modern. No band 28/29 for most Canadian 700MHz LTE either for the Bell/Telus network.

No need to sideload. I was surprised to find that Google services and Play store are preloaded on the Honor Magic 2 on the Chinese ROM!
I think it's related to which region you select when you setup the phone so if you choose anything but China region you see the Play Store app and Google Services are working.
The Chinese ROM has some preloaded Chinese apps, all of them can be removed. Huawei also preloaded their apps and services on the phone, some can be removed, others can be disabled and there are few that you can't touch (Wallet, AppsGallery - Huawei store, HiVoice), but eventually you get a very clean phone with Google Services working out of the box so to be honest it's really (almost) clean Global ROM out of the box.
The only thing I had to setup (except of removing the unnecessary apps) is the battery exceptions which were disabled for Google services by default for some reason (I experienced some delays in push messages, now it is better).
By the way, the Chinese ROM is also has 50-60 languages supported while a typical China ROM has Chinese and English only.

To me it seems like a better phone than the Mi Mix 3. Is there news on a global version being released ? The only thing that's holding me back is that the bootloader can't be unlocked without paying but hopefully somebody will find a solution to that. If I could root this phone, it'd be one of the best phones released so far
I would buy the china version right now if I could, problem is for me is import taxes, as it equates OT over 1000 in my local currency I have to be a registered importer, even at $999 value it will means a $200 import fee.
I have no issues with China rom, it has English language, it supports google framework what else would I need?, and later on in the future I'm sure there will be plenty of cooked roms released for this since its such a beast phone.

There wont be a single custom rom for it. The bootloader ist locked and you can't unlock it (except if you pay some money) no bootloader unlock -> no custom recovery -> no custom rom or kernels....
It is really sad, it used to be my new device but not with all these restrictions..

Question Pros/Cons of China variant abroad

For those that have the China variant abroad, can you provide your thoughts and experiences thus far? Thought it would be nice to have a centralized thread for those considering to pick up a China variant over the Global one.
Some issues of interest...
Network Connectivity (despite missing bands)
Calls & Visual Voicemail
Issues with Google Services
App functionality
Backup and Sync of phone, apps, etc
Language limitations
MIUI Updates
Cost and Customs fee
No current issues in UK using Sky and EE. Bought from Wondamobile, no customs and currently using FedEx via Singapore and Paris.
My cloud and back up working just fine as is the mini Google apps set. Will go EU ROM once bootloader is unlocked next Thursday.

On your China ROM, is Google PAY working with UK banks?
I'm wary of ordering the China model if it doesn't work. Unlocking the bootloader and then getting Google Pay to work is much more difficult since Feb when Google changed things so I'd keep it locked.
P. S. Is wifi calling with EE working too?

1) Does Android Auto work?
2) Can you assign the Google Discover feed to the left of the homescreen?

Android Auto - appears to work perfectly. Only installed to test and don't actually use it at all but it seems fine.
Google Discover - I haven't found a way to do that I'm afraid (I'm also a fan of it). Best workaround I've found is adding Google search widget to home screen. If you press the 'G' symbol on that, it essentially loads Google Discover.
When I plug android auto in I just get a miui USB popup not sure, can't get auto to connect to the car

There are differences in the bands. Yes 4G and 5G will work but not 5G N78 that's the 3.5ghz frequency.
So don't expect blazing fast 5G speeds on CN version.

EU ROM is basically a community led Custom ROM with good support based on the China ROM.
Global is the ROM Xiaomi officially puts on the models of their phones they launch internationally. It uses google messages, dialer, etc by default.

What extra bucks?? On AliExpress Global cost the same as CN version.
However Trading shenzhen lowered the prices now. But not when I ordered.
But my point was you claimed they are the exact the same.... Some users may be disappointed afterwards.

Question UK Users services

Interested in UK users experiences with getting network features working fully.
Does WiFi calling, volte , visual voicemail, 4G+ and 5G, GPay et al work for you?
What ROM? What carrier?
Did you have to disable carrier checks? Or did it work out the box?
Also non region specific stuff too I guess , android auto experience etc etc.
I'm on a contract with EE.
VOLTE, WiFi calling, 4G+, 5G and Google Pay all working without any issues straight out the box. I don't use Android auto so I can't comment on that I'm afraid. CN ROM currently on MIUI 12.5 stable.

I didn't have to pay any import tax or custom fees. You can also buy from Wondamobile which they say won't incur any import charges either: https://www.wondamobile.com/xiaomi-mi-11-ultra-5g-12gb-ram-256gb-dual-sim-unlocked.html
Yeah, I have used Wonda a few times. Going to go with TS this time to see how it goes.
Hopefully sell my old Note 20U soon.
Deleted
I'm now in 12.5.2 EU rom, and on Vodafone UK.
Still no 4G+/CA. 5G does work but nPerf states it's 4G. VoLTE, VoWiFi, GPay all fine.
Be interested to know if anyone gets CA working on Vodafone UK with the Global or EEA rom. May have to wait to see what version is released in the UK.
Yip. I have ordered today from TS.
I have a EE work SIM, but use Sky personality. Will be interesting if all works with them as they are quite restrictive on device support.
I don't get 4G+ CA anywhere locally anyway, but bizarrely get 5G at the end of my harbour pier .
Will have to see if it's worth flashing global ROM next month after the UK release. Everything points to the CN being more than usable after tweaking though.
I was on Chinese stock, now global. Sky and EE work fine on both, I use them too.
Global obviously does have full Google services, not the mini pack that was on the Chinese but for some reason they use Google's phone, contacts and text app, so no native call recording. Global is still on original firmware where before flashing I had 12.5 which was a delight, hopefully 12.5 will hit the Global soon.
I will go Xiaomi EU ROM if and when a twrp is released or the fastboot bricking issue has been well resolved. I used EU version on my 10 ultra and it is a dam good ROM.
Brilliant.
@Sathelp
Does volte and WiFi calling work on SKY on CN ? ( Whilst I wait on bl unlock for Global )

Question CN or Global (EU) Phone ?

hey there fellow XDA Members and Mi11 Ultra Owners!
Any downsides of buying the CN Version of this Phone over the Global/EU Version?
i've got the MiMix2s and have there the issue that it got some new Baseband FW someday that now produces issues in the EU Network... also other Phones from xiaomi had this issues that the CN Versions where somewhat troublesome
I bought the china version and when it comes to google integration, it's very limited what you have.
your apps and messages won't automatically sync, there is always the chinese apps that you can removed, but the AI stays there.. I installed the global version and it's like a normal google phone, everything will be download it to your Mi Ultra 11, no need to download each app individually, . If I was you, i would spend the little extra money it cost fot the global version and get it.
Just get the CN phone and flash the EU Rom.
Honestly I recommend buying the global version as internet bands differ from the Chinese version at hardware level, so no firmware can change that. Many people didn't find this an issue anyway, but I would recommend you to stay on global

I've not seen any changes to radio bands in any specs. I would have thought that they would not change the modems hardware antennas for different regions? If you have some specs showing the different bands can you let me see them or a link, I'm really interested if they have.

5G works here with CN model so I'm good.
Bands are different, sure you have 5g but you may miss something on some specific carrier

But the hardware can select the bands from the modems configuration per sim and network location required to the maximum bands built to be used per model. See all the mi 11 ultra configurations in the screenshots taken from mine.
Mine is not rooted, but it would be good to see the modem config from a global hardware sold phone and a Chinese hardware sold phone both using the same ROM to see if there are any difference's in bands using the Qualcomm modern config app. I would be happy to be proved wrong but I bet both have the same bands, just applied different.
No rom or firmware can change the bands sorry
This is my first post so forgive any stupid errors or remarks ! I bought a Mi 11 Ultra with the CN Rom. I'm waiting for the bootloader to unlock and I was going to install the EU Rom. But I have been using it after taking off the bloatware and to be honest it's behaving and works well. The 5g speeds are good and it seems to change between 4g and 5g smoothly when moving about. I've attached a screenshot of a speed test done sitting in a coffee shop on Tottenham Court Rd London. No over heating and camera works well. So I'm seriously considering leaving it locked and using the CN Rom.
But willing to hear why that's a stupid idea!
Thanks

Man
let them save a few bucks. Then they will fill the forum with questions and complaints. People like to discuss. However more activity is good for the forum.

The CN ROM works well if you're patient and don't mind debloating and tuning it to ensure all Google apps work as it should since it does require some tweaking. For example, I remember my Google Pay didn't initially work.
I remember getting 150Mbps on LTE+ with EE in London Bridge station over a month ago which was fantastic although I heard the EU Weekly runs a bit more efficient with the memory management and process allocation. What eventually sold me was the fact that it was based on CN Weekly betas, and those occasionally get camera improvements first before stable across all regions.

I purchased the China version as well, maily because it is a lot cheaper than the global variant. I then wait a week, unlock my bootloader and flash the Xiaomi.eu rom with full Google integration. You see, the Xiaomi.eu rom takes the roms from China and removes all the Chinese bloat and script and then adds in full Google functionality. It's truly the best of both worlds.
