Play games in 1440p on Android Pie - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Game Launcher only lets you select between 1080p and 720p. On the previous version I used Game Tuner to override it to 1440p. I didn't want to upgrade, as Game Tuner warned me about no support for Pie. But with the daily update notification, I could only avoid the update for three months before accidentally clicking Update Overnight.
Now my games run in 1080p again. Is there a way to get it to 1440p again? I would even gladly downgrade as this update is just horrible.
I can definitely tell the difference, especially in Real Racing 3, as it does not support Antialiasing; I used the higher resolution as a sort of Super-Sampling AA.

Sooooo open the game without game launcher?

Game Launcher doesn't actually list the resolution as 720p or 1080p. There's a "low resolution" option which doesn't always make a difference (maybe it was already 1080p). For some titles I think they might still run at 1440p but antialiasing has been turned off for more stable performance hence it looks like 1080p. Gear Club stuttered quite a lot if you used Game Tuner 1440p unless you overclocked but now it runs fine overall even if the resolution might be lower.
RR3 is not a good example because the game fails to even render at 1080p in the first place. People have been complaining about this since Nexus 7 2013 and other devices from that time, and the developers just said 'we can't fix this issue". It's done the same thing to me on my HTC Butterfly s, and Sony Xperia Z5, and is one reason why I'm discouraged to continue playing this game and waiting for its long download time. It's disappointing since iPhone gets much better rendering. Asphalt 8 and 9 aren't that much better either.

Will we ever get smooth graphics on X1?

Im talking about watching movies, playing games - i dont know what the reason its so slow but it is painfully slow. its bothering me a lot. it seems like older much cheaper phones can play video much better than our phones.
is it a hardware fault (no hope) or a software fault ?
its a software fault
if you update your phone to some custom roms the phone runs LOTS faster
anyways, my videos and some 3d games run pretty fast on my phone.
not java games cause those arent hardware supported
I have to say that I am pretty darn happy with video playback on this phone... its fast and doesnt lag... the sound is even in sync with the picture unlike some devices I have tried before... I have not played any graphics intensive games on this phone so far though...
a game like archibalds adventure cant even scroll properly. i mean it looks like it was taken out of the 80s.
Maybe it is because this phone has up to 5 times more pixels then previous phones you have owned?
whats the point in it having 5 times the pixels if it cant cope with them

It copes with them just fine. it just wasn't made with gaming in mind.

What videos? Are these videos, by chance a chintzy 320x240? I've tried avi videos in standard DVD resolution, 720x480 and 640x480 and they are both choppy as hell. There are far too many apologists for the really lackluster video playback on this device. I realize it's a driver issue, but when rich multimedia playback is one of the selling points, I think it verges on false advertising when it can't play accepted video standards. Have HTC pony up the money to Qualcomm for the right drivers and I think the X1 and a number of other devices in their stable can really start to live up to their claims.
Yeah, I have to agree. 5X the pixels means nothing if the phone can't handle them
No problem for me with video...
-I recode vidéo in 800*480 with HTC Touch HD Video Converter
-I use Windows Media Player to watch video
rom im using
im using touch it xperience 3.5 but i've heard touch it 2.2 was faster
from now on if it has qualcom in the hardware spec im gonna avoid it like the plague!
I gotta admit, just when I start being happy with the Xperia video.....
I'll look over at some movie my wife is watching on the iphone and just shake my head. The Xperia is NOT impressive in the video dept. I can get video to play to ALMOST lag free and it looks pretty dang good. But c'mon already! With the hardware capabilities of this phone, video should look all around amazing.

I have converted some Chinese tv serial episodes using magic video converter and they came out great, not too sure of the res but by memory its around 640x480 to 720x480 as you comment... no lag and sound is better than I expected... I also have a movie or two that works just as well, again Chinese stuff (as I am learning Chinese I find this is an interesting way to help out with both reading (subtitles) and listening)... I am using coreplayer and have it in full screen mode when watching...
Oh and I am by no means an apologist... if it was crap I would say so, but its not... but then I dont expect my phone to act or have the same capacity as my laptop/pc.... its a phone and does what it says on the tin...
I dont get it. I have a stock ROM and my video is perfect. I downloaded an Ipod converted (m4v) version of Superbad and it looks and sounds amazing FULL screen btw). All i had to do was rename the file to mp4 and it works perfectly! Maybe there is something else going on with you guys phones. I also have Anchorman, SemiPro, and several others running perfectly. Besides TF3D, i dont have any other plug ins installed.
I also have no issues with video playback,
I am running Touch IT 2.2 which i am not willing to replace yet because the ROM is fast as hell and bug free. Just used the HD converter in the sticky on page 1 along with a few speed tweeks from the Mark a Clienti thread and POW!! full screen, top notch quality res and not a single lag or frame drop in sight.
I have noticed that a lot of people are having issues with various applications on their SE X1's but i dont seem to have had any issues at all. I started with the clean ROM and made sure i installed all of my required apps and tweaks in one go, making sure to reset after each install. After that i just sat back and watched it fly, maybe i'm just lucky

You might want to check out what the bitrates are on those videos. Your average avi video is about 1.3-1.4 gigabytes in size for your standard 1.75-2 hour movie. That comes to about 1,500 kbs. Anything significantly less than that and it looks kind of muddy when viewed on a regular sized TV screen. Ideally, you shouldn't even have to recode video you ripped yourself. In theory you should be able to rip once and play on all your appliances that are video capable using a standard codec with reasonable settings. An avi file 1.3 gigabytes in size for a 2 hour movie is entirely reasonable and I highly doubt that you can achieve that with the X1 in its current state. I've tried extensively and the only way you can make it play with any level of smoothness is by dramatically reducing the resolution or dropping the bitrate precipitously. You can't just drag an acceptable video from your computer onto this phone and expect it to play acceptably the way it is right now. As for the expectation that it's only a phone I say that the drivers are the only thing that prevent it from meeting the expectations. I'll bet the hardware is there, but HTC just feels like being cheap. Heck, there are phones debuting at MWC right now that do full motion 1080p playback of h.264 video. The X1, which isn't more than a few months old, can't smoothly play back a 640x480 1,500 kbs video. At $700 retail and their promise of a full-featured multi-media device that is scandalous. I dare anyone to say otherwise.

You sound much more knowledgable than me so I wont try to argue with you, but I have quite a few avi files that are around the 800mb size that play very well and are crisp and clear even on a bigger screen (my laptop is 15.4 and pc is 19inches), in fact I find it pretty rare to have an avi file over 900 Mb for a standard movie (up to 2hours I would guess is pretty standard)... As another poster a couple of posts back mentioned, I notice a few problems that people are having that I dont... thank goodness as with my level of understanding I would be hard pressed to now what it is I need to search for to fix the problem...

[Q] forcing froyo to use both cores

i'm using modded froyo rom for about two weeks and i have one problem: why players can't use both cores for playing videos at 720p or 1080p? yeah i know that all of you would say to convert videos to 480p, but i have a big collection of hd movies and it will take weeks to convert and to go to honeycomb is death for me because of small amount of free ram and i saw some thread on htc forum to edit cpu settings to use both cores.
You could try the ICS build, it plays 720p perfectly.
Also keep in mind that given the choice, you shouldnt choose 1080i/p on the S7 anyway.
The display is WVGA800 (800x480) and it only outputs 720p though hdmi (though everywhere I read that T2 can output 1080p but neither my S7 nor S10 do that, they both output 720p)
My memory's rusty on it, but I believe 2.2/2.3 only had marginal multi-core support at best. There wernt really any dual core devices when either launched. Realistically the S7 shoulda been delayed a couple weeks and launched as a 3.0 launch device. It was literally weeks apart.
ok, ok, i know, i shouldn't choose 1080p vids but if it can play on honeycomb why not on modded froyo rom?
EDIT: How LG OPTIMUS 2X have ability to record 1080p vids on same chipset and same os(froyo)?

[GAMES] HTC Butterfly s gaming thread

Post all gaming discussion here.
Currently I have mostly runner games (Temple Run, Minion Rush, Robot Unicorn Attack 2), PBA Bowling Challenge, Real Racing 3 and Fast & Furious 6 but I usually just play the runner games. Unfortunately RR3 does not run in 1080p but at a rather low resolution; I hope EA fixes this soon. FIFA 14 works though there are some occasional issues with the loading screen in the beginning (sometimes the app crashes or the whole system hangs and I must do a reset)
What games would you recommend for the HTC Butterfly s? For me I would prefer free games.

Here is my list what I've played on Butterfly S (all tested and fully working):
Contre Jour, Rayman Jungle Run (prefer this runner over all others), Townsmen, Anomaly Korea, Minion Rush, Iesabel, Aralon, Wild Blood, Dungeon Hunter 4, Bard's Tale, Angry Birds (although Angry Birds support FullHD, I'd rather play in HD - icons are too small).
Don't know what games are free, as I download them from 4pda site.
I have found a temporary fix for Real Racing 3's low resolution issue using Ultimate Rotation Control, a similar fix was found for the new Nexus 7 by another user (the only difference is that for the Butterfly s it must be set to "forced auto").
Install "Ultimate Rotation Control", and set it to "forced auto", then run the game holding your phone vertical position on the loading screen (it will hang) before rotating it. Enjoy! There doesn't seem to be any anti-aliasing, but it runs at a much higher resolution
It's rather tedious because Sense 5 UI does not properly support landscape mode and you may also accidentally rotate the phone back to portrait mode, but you can briefly go back to the home screen and change the Ultimate Rotation Control on your status bar to "auto" and quickly get back to your game.

Another note: Does anyone here play Blitz Brigade? It always crashes on the title screen on mine =/ On Play Store I see one reviewer who gave the game a good review so that suggests it might work on some devices...
I can confirm that Asphalt 8 is now officially supported on the Butterfly s, but like Real Racing 3, it does not seem to run at the full 1080p, but it doesn't look that bad (for RR3 I tried fiddling with the settings but it always looked low res, yet it still lags).
However I am having some touch input problems especially with the top side of the phone (the left side if you rotate it to horizontal position). Maybe it's because I have a screen protector that is not oleophobic and sweat registers a touch input, but I've seen other users complain of this problem too (see the PhoneDog comparison with HTC One)
GT Racing 2 runs fine and renders in 1080p.
The lack of 1080p rendering is not uncommon with newly released games on some devices also GS4 and Nexus 7 but I think HTC may need to do something about it.
Unfortunately the ultimate rotation control app only works for seven days and I can't find another app with the "force rotate" option.

nope, RR3 needs a Force Rotation option.
I think the low-resolution rendering of some games has to do with the lack of support for OpenGL ES 3.0... I really hope we get an update soon... =/
It seems they're focusing on the One line and not so much on the Butterfly s but I think our chances are faster than Droid DNA/Butterfly because our device is newer, and it's an unlocked device unlike the DNA.

Do games look better on 4.3? Does Asphalt or Real Racing 3 render in 1080p?

120hz mode not affecting games

hello! I just got my brand new ROG phone 2 today and have been testing my apps and games since then. Everything works normal, the 120hz screen is as buttery smooth as everyone says, but when playing games I just can't notice any real difference between playing with a regular 60hz phone and this one. I have very few knowledge about the topic but I understand that the refresh rate and the in-game fps are different, however I supposed that using the 120hz mode should also increase the number of fps shown by the in-game stats, but in every game I test it always shows 60fps at maximum. I use to play Brawl Stars (a relatively low graphics game) a lot, and I noticed they posted about the recent launch of an update specifically made to give support to the 120hz refresh rate on the ROG phone 2, but It just goes to 60fps. I already tried setting the refresh rate to 120hz in the armoury crate app for the games but saw no difference. Is there any configuration or tweak I'm missing?. Oh, and I got the 8/128GB Tencent version. Thanks for your help.

That's because the games are capped at 60FPS by the developers. So, even though your screen can go 120Hz, it'll only be as high as the game itself.
Try these 120Hz games:
Trials Frontier
Mortal Kombat
Gear Club
DEAD Trigger 2

Fortnite 120fps mod on android?

Before buying the Rog phone 2, I would like to know if modding fortnite to run at 120fps is possible on this phone. I know some people have been able to access and change the cfg file by using magisk and a root explorer to make the game run at 60fps on unsupported devices, but I have never seen anyone try 120fps on android at all.
All I know is that the cfg file is located at(root):
/data/data/com.epicgames.fortnite/files/UE4Game/FortniteGame/FortniteGame/Saved/Config/Android/GameUserSettings.ini
And that you have to change these strings:
MobileFPSMode=Mode_120Fps
bUseVSync=false
UnlockConsoleFPS=True
FrameRateLimit=120.000000
I currently don't have a 120hz phone atm nor do I have a rooted device to try it out myself. If any of you decide to try this out, please leave a comment below so that I can see if it works at all.
Fortnite 120fps support comes from Epic Games, not Asus. There's no way of "modding" the game. The support will have to come from Epic Games.
Also remember that at the moment Fortnite doesn't even support 60fps on this phone, and on the Android phones it does support it, the other elements of graphics suffer A LOT from the FPS boost. Given how Android graphics are pretty terrible to begin with, at 120fps, should you manage to unlock it, the game will look like trash.
If solely playing Fortnite at a decent framerate is your goal, in that budget, I'd recommend getting an iPad Mini 5. Runs 60fps smoothly, doesn't look that bad, and is a great way to play the game. Works great for me. If you absolutely must have 120fps, you'll need to shell out more cash for a PC or for an iPad Pro.
Currently fortnite does support 60 fps on the rog phone 2, but it sets your graphics to high to run at 60 fps. Switching back to any higher sets it back to 30 fps, but you can always move around from high to low for better fps stability.
Here is a screenshot.
I had Fortnite running at 120fps on my s20 ultra using parallel space and editing the same things you are talking about in the space. It doesn't say 120fps, it says option, but here's a screen shot just to show you it is possible.
I would assume you could do the same thing through a regular root.
