Always on Display and Notifications? - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

I’m considering buying MI9. However, my phone is almost always set to silent, and I use “always on display” and notifications (from all apps) a lot.
Is it true that MI9 (by default) only supports some notifications (like phone, messages) but not all?
I’ve visited the Xiaomi store, checked Mi9 options, and there were really a lot of options for ambient display, but only for graphics not functionality? The store clerk was eager to sell me and said that “everything works,” but I’m skeptical.
Do I have to buy something like Samsung or LG for ambient display and _all_ notifications?

I know these apps have an icon on AOD: snapchat, wechat, whatsapp, instagram, phone, mail, sms.

Notifications?

I use my phone for Calendar and meeting events, etc
I had a Palm years ago and a Nokia communicator that would Notify of an evet or Voicemail and keep chiming until acknowledged.
How do I get something like this on the Note? If I am not next to the phone and hear the whistle or check it, I don't know if anything triggered?
Noled will show a fake notification light which works well for me. It also has a vibrate every x minutes function that I'm not sure is working for me. I tried vibrate notify but I had problems.
It might be conflicting with smart vibrator. Not sure.
Still looking for a working vibrate reminder.

I too use my android devices for events, tasks, project planning and such and it is so much better than the Palm was or will ever be!
As for the app I recommend using: pocket informant. It works great with toodledo and google calendar (and also gtasks, but I don't use that).
*see below for answer @ question.

You might want to use: Missed message flasher free. It has the option to light up the screen, use the notification lights and vibrate with:
- calendar, email, gmail, go sms pro, g+, gtalk, gvoice, k9mail, missed calls, skype, sms & mms, whatsapp and if the phone is set into silent mode, you can also choose to disable the vibrate option. Also in the donate version you can choose the option 'other apps'.
I use it with pocket informant and maildroid (free version) and it works absolutely great!

Interesting stuff here. How about missed calls or VM's?

Its fine. The nature of amoled is that only the lit portion of the screen drains battery. It's pretty minimal. Give it a try.

Missed call are supported but I don't know what VM's are. If it's a messaging type of thing that is than also support I guess.
I think the program just uses the notification bar as a source to act because pocket informant isn't in the list and it does still reacts when a reminder is sent to me via the program itself.

The question is, is there a way to tweak the native AOD without rooting?
Sent from my SM-N9500 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Can the native always on display notifications for non-stock apps? Eg for an email client other than Huawei's built in, for Whatsapp, etc?

No, it pretty much sucks.
Have you tried third-party apps to get always on notifications for whatsapp and other apps of your choice?
I found the battery life draining a lot quicker with it on, so just switched it back off. It's very limited though not even icons to say you got a message etc?
Hi can i get the old t9 predictive txt keypad on my Huawei P20 Pro?
ive tried every app going but cant find one that is predictive, thank you

xiaomi aod and notification third part apps

I see that you do not write from a month and I fear that nobody will answer ... not to run into the mad mistake that I made buying a huawei, I could ask who is sure if the notifications of third-party programs such as whatsapp and gmail (DOES NOT IMPOSE THE PHONE CALLS AND SMS) appear in the black screen of the allways on display (DO NOT MATTER IN THE BLOCK SCREEN)?
They don't appear not all of them

Disruptive notifications

Went from a Note 8 to the Note 9, anyone else notice that some notifications are super disruptive and find the setting to resolve? Maybe I'm just missing something, but seems like notifications like facebook for example are awful.
Doesn't seem to matter if it's youtube, VLC, Poweramp, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. If I get a facebook notification, as it's the worst, it will pause my currently playing movie/music/video for a good 2-3 seconds and then resume playing. I didn't have this on the Note 8 and it's driving me nuts lol.
I figure it has to be a os setting issue (as all notifications do this) but I can't find a way to change it other than disabling all notifications all together.
I'm having the same issues. Was hoping this thread wasn't empty.
I was having the same problem. If you go into Settings > Notifications, you can manage notifications for each app. I don't remember for sure, but I think just about all of my apps' notifications were ON by default! I shut them all of, then re-enabled just the ones on wanted! Sometimes you individual apps will also have different settings for notifications, too. But at least going into settings allows you to just shut them all down for an app. Thank goodness! No more Facebook notifications! Just be careful what you shut off. I shut off messages by mistake. I wondered why I wasn't getting notified when I got a text.

Not getting any notifications in time

I'm having an issue where I don't get any notifications until I open the app. For example with gmail, I have to refresh Gmail inside the app in order to get my emails.
Though, I have Sync turned on and power saving mode is off.
Anyone else?
Yes, I've only had this with Pie, it's annoying

Annoying to say at least. How can they release a brand new phone with a firmware that can't even deliver notifications, it's pretty basic stuff and some notifications can be quite important.
Noticed this as well on some apps.. very frustrating. Needs to be fixed ASAP
