The question is, is there a way to tweak the native AOD without rooting?
Sent from my SM-N9500 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Can the native always on display notifications for non-stock apps? Eg for an email client other than Huawei's built in, for Whatsapp, etc?

No, it pretty much sucks.
Have you tried third-party apps to get always on notifications for whatsapp and other apps of your choice?
I found the battery life draining a lot quicker with it on, so just switched it back off. It's very limited though not even icons to say you got a message etc?
Hi can i get the old t9 predictive txt keypad on my Huawei P20 Pro?

Mine only does that with texts, not with mail.
Please search how you did it
I think the reason why it doesn't wake up with email is because im not using the stock email client . I am using K9

You use stock text client?? Cause the stock text clients wakesup the phone.
Yea I am using the stock one, and it doesnt wake up my phone.
Still the phone keeps waking up on txt msg.
Just try out GO SMS Pro, it's free and in my opinion much better than the standard one! Lot's of options there, including an option to not wake up

I want to keep it stock. So not a option.
Do you have locking enabled, or what kind of screenlock you have.
If you have no lock, it will wake-up your phone.
If you use pattern lock it doesn't wake-up the phone.
I use go sms pro. Try it, you can uninstall it.

I'm using the latest cm-10.1-20130730-UNOFFICIAL-tenderloin and it was freshly installed on a brand new touchpad (i had one sitting in a box for ages(
However, with everything working on it, i find that the notifications don't seem to work.
for eg, i don't get notifications when i get a new fb message or a google hangouts message.
i have to open the app and manually refresh it for it to get the new data.
any ideas on what i can do?

I would go into Settings and take a look at the Accounts. Verify sync is on for the accounts in question.
Could also go into the Apps area as well. I believe there is a show notifications box that you can check
for the two apps.

show notifications is ticked on for both apps already.
it seems that when it's in the lock screen nothing comes through, but when i unlock it, i get a mass of notifications all at once.
almost seems like it's blocking data when the screen is locked but i can't find any power profiles etc to fix this...
any ideas?

Alot of devices and ROMS will have Wifi turn off while sleeping to avoid battery drain.
Go into Advanced settings for Wi-fi and adjust the Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting.
I started using Google Messenger recently, and one thing I noticed, is that when the phone is off to the side, and I get a new text message, the screen doesn't pop on, like it did with stock Messages and Textra.
Is there some Settings somewhere I need to enable that ?

From my experience, you need the Tasker app and set up a profile to turn the screen on. That is the only way I have found that works consistently. You will also need the Secure Settings app.
The Tasker app can seem overwhelming, but if you take your time and read some of the help files, it is actually pretty easy. I use the same app to turn my phone to vibrate when the phone links to my work wifi.

I have my P20 pro since Mars and I have problems with my SMS app notifications, they are not reliable, sometimes i receive a sms I get the notification in that moment, other times I open the app to see that I had recibed a sms several hours erlier and din't get any notification like sound, led light, diplyed on the Always on screen or dot over the app.
I'm using the MS launcher (the E.M.U.I 9.1 is just awful) with all permition and app runing on back ground. This apens with de system sms app or any other app for sms that I instaled and just apens with the SMS app everything else works perfect, also tryed other launchers and hard reset the phone.

Did you try settings>>battery>>app launch? Make sure you select the sms app and set it to manage manually and make sure the options to run in background etc are both set.
Cheers

If you're using the stock app, have you turned off WiFi messages?? In chat feature??
Doesn't always work and can cause delays as it will assume your recipients also have the same features set up.

I'm using the stock sms app but that can't be the problem, my phone don't have that feature. Also, I still have the problem with others sms apps.

You aren't online. There's no connectivity icon at all.
We have the same phone so it should be available.
Unless its region specific, but I doubt that.
Install another messaging application, handcent used to be pretty good, but it's been a while.

I think that is a regional feature, even with mobile data on still don't have 'chat features'. I also have sms organizer from Microsoft, nice app, but the problem persist.

I've seen some threads asking about the google messages apk. but my question is:
My s21 ultra came with google messages by default as SMS app, I also have the Samsung messages app installed (I set it as default instead of the google messages app).
Is there a reason for the google messages app to have come as default? Are there any advantages to it?
p.s. I didn't really find the exact answer around the forum, if there is such answer, can you please point me to it and close this thread?
Regards

I like google messages mainly for the good integration of RCS and also because it has a web app. The UI is fine, darkmode is cool, so if I had to choose I'd go for Google.
Now on why it's google messages by default, I have no clue...
Personally, I like Google Messages, but Samsung Messages now has RCS too I believe. It just got it recently. But from what I've seen and used, Google Messages is probably the way to go. It's just a better experience overall. It can verify business senders, help you report spam messages, and also just a couple of different things that are convenient, like what Raiz mentioned above. I'd go back to Google if you want something that works better overall.
Thanks mates!
Will switch back to Google/Android Messages and test it out a bit more
I use Messages, the only AT&T bloatware app I use.
Edit, it's Samsung not AT&T
Here I am still using Textra lol
Google messages far superior easier to use, much easier adding gifs, emojis and attachments.
I use Google Messages it's really nice and simple to use.
Wish you could uninstall the samsung contacts, calendar, calc, clock, messages, phone etc.... it's the one thing that irritates me with samsung that they spend all this effort replicating what google already does a perfectly good job of.

You can remove using the adb commands. You can find the package name by using the apk analyzer app.
I was using Google Messages on my previous device, but with the S21 I couldn't set conversations to be mute (roaming messages i receive daily on my 2nd sim).
I can only make the notification silent for that conversation, but I don't even want the notification, which I cannot do.
Samsung Messages have this ability
I use signal. Better than both, has everything plus security and privacy.

Well you can hide apps from the main user (you) with this trick but you can't actually delete the apk file from /system unless you have root.
I personally prefer Samsung messaging app, mainly because of the its UI.
However, the main advantage of Google messages is the availability of RCS by default, no matter where you live or which carrier you have. You can have RCS with Samsung messages but only if your carrier supports it.

In Samsung Messenger the no notifications option (bell icon with a bar on it) will not even show a notification in the Android notifications area (When I open Messages I will see there is unread messages in the silent conversation), while Google Messages it will still show a notification but without sound.
I use Google Messages because for some reason, MMS won't send or receive in Samsung Messeges.
If anyone has a fix for this....

Exactly, especially their UI. I have a pixel phone and many years after the launch of material design Google still doesn't use it in all its apps. The apps feels completely separate, each has it's ow design and colors. Some apps have dark mode with full black background (setting app) while others have dark gray background (contacts, messages,...). Let's not talk about YouTube, which still doesn't follow MD 2...
I like how samsung use the same design language for all its apps and they pay particular attention to small details just like IOS
