Our network in dubai is gsm. It doens't connect to a network to complete the activation process.
Now verizon asked to return to US and finish the activation.
Is there a way around it ? or should i return the phone and wait for the GSM version ?
Return it. The 5g GSM is out, korean version.
I am inside the US and I have a similar question. My phone is from Samsung directly and I want to use it on Sprint. Do I have to activate it with Verizon 1st using the included SIM before I can use it on other carrier as a 4G phone? Does Verizon still ship its phone unlocked like before?

@Peichen01 Got one recently. Just buy the $30 prepaid plan and leave the Verizon sim in for 24 hours after activation and it should work with any carrier after that.
@Emerald Core You will have to wait for an unlocked model (or get the Korean model) as the IMEI needs to be activated in Verizon's system and can't be done outside the US.
The phone itself is unlocked (requires no unlock code), however, when you set up the phone it specifically states that it must be activated on the Verizon network to make and receive calls

Beat option is to wait for an ebay seller who can do the activation and ship it afterwards.

Does it have to be Verizon prepaid or will a MVNO prepaid works as well? A Verizon MVNO like Red Pocket and Straight Talk
Don't think it works with a MVNO

I have purchased the Verizon version and activated the device, After I tried putting the T-mobile sim it didnt let me use it.Device says "sorry we cannot activate a different carrier on this device at this time".
As per your suggestion should I keep the verizon sim for 24 hours before I try using any other carrier ?
Thank you for your help.
Leave it in for 24 hours
I can confirm leaving on Verizon for 24 hours works to unlock the phone. I get on Verizon's prepaid plan for the phone and after 2 days, I borrowed my friend's T-Mobile SIM and I can make calls and browse the web. The phone would warn the SIM is not Verizon but works.

Glad to hear it worked. Just make sure to keep the Verizon sim as it may be needed to get OTA updates.
The warning of inserting other sims irritates me.
Better wait for unlocked version. Well, before note 10 comes out.

hi today my bro purchased a d3 which is not activated its a verizon one....so the seller told him that he can activate the phone from his verison sim and then ask them the unlock code to use it outside of usa...
so my bro is gona send me that phone to india so is it gona work or we screwd up lol...
or is there any possible way to make phone work phone is stil in usa and now what shold be done ?hope it works in india
What GSM frequencies does your carrier use? I think the only restrictions on GSM are US carriers/
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
freq
GSM 900 5 carriers
GSM 900/1800 these i found from google.. here i phone 4 works
and the bands of i phone 4 and d3 are nearly similar i think
i phone 4 -GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA 850/900/1900/2100
d3-GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (Quadband) HSDPA 850/1900/2100
i hope it works...
and one more thing the phone which my bro has is still inactive the seller told tat he called up verizon and took unlock code and inserted it in phone but m not sure he did ....becoz if he did then how is phone still unactivated so m kinda so confsued...hope some one explains me...
I'm going to assume you are not in the U.S. due to your English. If your local carrier has provided you a SIM card, just plug it in the Droid 3 and see if it works.
If the phone is locked for foreign carrier and requires an unlock by Verizon, then you're screwed because you won't be able to call Verizon to unlock it for you (being that you're not in U.S. and not a Verizon customer).
As for calling Verizon to activate the phone, that's for Verizon customers in the U.S.
...
i dont have the phone yet my bro will receive in two days.and then he will send me. so how can he check weather its unlocked or not?...the seller told us tat he have put up the unlock code and even has given the unlock code...
but i doubt becoz the phone is not yet activated...the phone is still in shipping my bro will receive it in 2-3 days....
so my questions are
1)what sim card should he use to check there in usa
2)the phone is not activated so is it necessary that my brother activate that phone with his number? or without activation can a phone be used with a gsm service sim card.....
3) and i am confused can a phone be unlocked without phone being activated?

1) Phone will not work on GSM in USA no matter what SIM card you put in. Your brother must really try to unlock it before he sends it over to you since some cannot be unlocked without Verizon providing the code and you may be stuck with a non-unlockable phone (useless). Get your brother purchase unlock code online and try it (by inserting any non-Verizon sim card inside). If phone unlocks you are good to go. If code doesn't work, he either needs to have it activated on a non-new postpaid account that has been in good standing for at least 60 days and request Verizon to provide the unlock code, or to return the phone and try another one.
2) no activation is needed if you are going to use the phone on GSM outside USA
3) phone can be unlocked without being activated with Verizon, but this might be a tough thing to do since Verizon altered intentionally unlock code of some of the handsets.

I can't tell you if activation is needed. I've had an iPhone 4S (Verizon) unlocked, but it was already activated when I proceeded. Verizon did require me to tell them the phone number for the phone I wanted to unlock, so it might have to be activated.

This seems to be same question as #2.
I called Verizon and told them I wanted to unlock my wife's iPhone 4S for use in Taiwan. They forwarded me to the global department, and the rep told me to hold on the line while he unlocks the phone.
After he said it was unlocked, I tried my wife's sister's international SIM card in the phone. The phone didn't ask for an unlock code, but the SIM card did, since the sister had set a code. She knew the code though, and after putting it in, the SIM was accepted. We won't know if it's for sure working until she brings the phone to Taiwan, but it appears to be working.

I have seen several posts on flashing XT1053(retail/tmobile/developer) firmware on XT1058(AT&T/Rogers/etc) hardware. I believe most people were only doing the OS though and not the entire flash(including the radio/modem)
The XT1053 is FCC ID ihdt56pa2 and includes: gsm 850/900/1800/1900, wcdma 1700/850/1900 and LTE bands 02,04 and 17
The XT1058 is FCC ID ihdt56pa1 and includes: gsm 850/900/1800/1900, wcdma 850/1900 and LTE bands 02,04,05 and 17
So the differences are that the XT1053 supports wcdma 1700 and the XT1058 supports LTE band 05.

But on the CyanogenMod page about the devices, they have the exact same bands:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Xt1058_Info
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Xt1053_Info
So the reason I'm choosing the Tmobile X over the native ATT one is because ATT locked the bootloader, and has ugly logos on the phone, plus bloatware. Unlocked bootloader is the main thing. I'm not getting the developer edition because I really want to customize my phone .
So, can SOMEONE confirm if you can use E/3G/4G/LTE on the TMobile Moto X?

I can confirm that the "T-Mobile" Moto X (XT1053) works 100% on AT&T 3G and LTE. I am using this model on AT&T's GoPhone service without any issues, both 3G HSPA+ and LTE work fine.
It is true that the XT1053 model is "missing" an LTE band (Band 5) -- however, AT&T does NOT use this band in the United States (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks#Americas), and the T-Mobile version has Bands 4 and 17 that AT&T uses in the U.S. So, if you're using AT&T in the U.S., the T-Mobile XT1053 model will work fine on LTE.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Moto X's IMEI will not be automatically provisioned by AT&T for LTE access since it's not an AT&T branded phone (AT&T's network assumes that non-AT&T phones are "dumbphones" that only work with HSPA+) -- you'll need to provide them with an IMEI of an AT&T LTE phone to get LTE access. This was confusing to me at first, because when I first activated my Moto X on the AT&T network I only could connect to HSPA+. I eventually had to go to an AT&T store, write down the IMEI of a Galaxy Note 2 floor model (but any LTE phone in the store would work), and give that IMEI to AT&T. After that, LTE worked perfectly.
Hope this helps!

Just call them. Say you aren't getting LTE and want to see what's wrong. They'll ask for the IEMI, and provision it. In a fringe scenario, they'll ask you to goto a store and get a new SIM card, where they'll do the same thing and read the IEMI.

They provisioned mine at the store as I needed a new nano sim card. I had a gophone HSPA+ account with my Nexus 4 and they added the IEMI from the Moto X to my account, changed my plan to an LTE plan and I got LTE on the Moto X. Took 5 minutes.

No one is "faking" IMEIs or doing anything illegal. I'm sure people's experiences will differ from one store to the next, I'm just telling you what I had to do.
When I first got my Moto X, LTE did not work. I tried calling AT&T's customer support, and they told me my phone was "unsupported by the network," which is a huge pile of BS. So, I went to my local AT&T store and told a rep what was going on. He said "I'll be right back," grabbed a Galaxy Note 2 from a display, and wrote down its IMEI. He punched that into the system and voilá, the Moto X's LTE worked and it's been great ever since.
This was back in September, so maybe AT&T automatically recognizes Moto X IMEIs and provisions them for LTE. If not, just go in to a store and they'll get it figured out for you.

I activated a brand new account with the Moto X, so I didn't already have an LTE device on it like you do. I bet yours will work right out of the gate. I wasn't trying to scare you or imply that your phone wasn't going to work, but I wanted to let you know of the possibility of that happening and what to do if it did happen. Having been in the same situation you will be in (using AT&T on a T-Mobile Moto X), I just wanted you to have all the info.
I'm definitely not the only one to have run into a similar issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45965273&postcount=169 . This was a reply from someone helping me out w/ the LTE issue when I first got the phone in September:
UserDemos said:
Mine works on AT&T LTE out of the box. You might have to try several things: call CS and make sure your IMEI is in the system. This should update and provision your account for LTE hopefully, though sometimes they don't recognize non-AT&T phones. Make sure to shut off your phone, go outside where it's clear and reboot after they do that as it needs to a very clear signal to latch onto the tower for the first time for LTE. If that doesn't work, you need to call CS and make sure you get Tech Support and basically geek out to one of them (about how you know what bands it has and what an APN is and double check you've got the correct one, etc) as they'll have to do all sorts of things to possibly get it to work. I finally had to use my old AT&T LTE phone IMEI and keep that on the account to keep it correctly provisioned. Weird, but just my experience.
It does work though on AT&T LTE.

Are most of you planning on getting a new nano sim or are you just going to cut yours down from a larger size?
I have an S4 right now which has a micro-sim. So I was thinking of cutting it down to a nano sim. Anyone done this?
I'm a little confused now on this IMEI stuff. I've got a GS3 (i747) on AT&T right now w/ LTE. I've purchased a XT1053 (T-Mobile variant of moto x).
When it comes next week and I go in to get a nano sim card will they give me a hard time because they'll want to register the IMEI of the Moto X and it won't be in their DB?
I also want to sell my i747 on swappa, but swappa you're supposed to unregister any devices from your account first right? So don't I need to remove the IMEI of my i747 from my account and have the Moto X IMEI registered then?

From the sounds of it, my information from earlier in the thread may be outdated. I had the IMEI issues back in September, but from what I can gather now (and based on my experience with the Nexus 5), I think AT&T's IMEI database has been updated to automatically provision new unlocked phones to LTE.
I would just take your Moto X into an AT&T store when you get it and try it with its own IMEI -- if LTE doesn't work, just ask one of the reps if they have a placeholder LTE-enabled IMEI they could punch in instead, this is what they did for me back in September.

I've cut down a micro SIM to a nano SIM with no problems. AT&T will give you a nano SIM for free if you walk into a store and ask for one though.
Great info guys. I'm planning to get the T-Mobile Moto X myself to use on AT&T, do I need to unlock the phone? and how do you do that?
The T-Mo version is not Sim locked, so you'll be fine. Sounds like you'll need to talk to AT&T to get LTE access, though.

I already have a Galaxy S3 with LTE enabled, all I need to do is to cut the sim card right? to have LTE on T-Mobile Moto X
I'm not sure how that works... Is it really as simple as swapping the Sim card? I just got a T-Mo Moto X to replace the AT&T version I've been using on T-Mo prepaid and I thought I'd at least have to register the new IMEI before I could use it.
EDIT: Well I just successfully swapped my sim into a new T-Mo Moto X and it connected right away to LTE. So that answers that. No need to call or otherwise notify T-Mo. The above discussion suggests it may be more complicated on AT&T, though.
I purchased a AT&T Moto X during the recent sale from Motorola for using it on straight talk. I assumed ATT version will work on ST as it is an MVNO of ATT.
I cut down a Straight talk micro sim card into a nano sim card and inserted it into Moto X. It never prompted me for an unlock code. I ported my number from ATT gophone to ST and they (ST) say it is active and provisioned as per their system. But I cannot make any calls and it is not connected to any network. It says HOME at the left corner. When I installed a SIM detector app from google play thru Wifi, it detects the SIM number and the other data. I spent lot of time talking to ST (they say the SIM is active and provisioned as per their system) and Motorola (they say since it is locked to AT&T, it is not working on ST). I tried to get AT&T to unlock it but they will not.
I cut down a AT&T go phone microsim into a nano sim card and activated it under AT&T go phone with a new number , it works. But I want to use it on ST.
1). Is my phone being locked to AT&T, the reason it is not working on ST. If so, if I purchase an unlock code online, it should work. But I never got any unlock code prompt at any time when I put in the ST sim card several times.
2). My ST sim card may not be LTE (I am not sure if it is lte or not. I had it with my previous ST account phone). Could it be the reason?
I appreciate any help/suggestions.
Before you stick the ST card in there, clean it first. Try it again in a few hours. Mine didn't work either the first night

1. You do not need an unlocked phone to use a ST sim running on the AT&T network. If you are using a t-mobile sim, you will need the phone unlocked. What are the first 5 digits on the sim card? I think AT&T is 89014.
2. I would buy a new ST sim card and cut it out again. That way you know you have the LTE version. Buy it NOW so you get the free Next Day shipping. It expires tomorrow.
Unless you plan on using LTE in Canada or South America, you should have bought the Unlocked GSM Moto X. They are/were the same price, but come unlocked and without bloatware from AT&T.

It starts with 89014 plus 15 digits.
I should have brought the Tmobile version which is unlocked but thought AT&T version may be less problematic with ST which is an MVNO of AT&T. I did order a new ST micro sim card today
I purchased my nexus 6 from a T-Mobile retail store and later read somewhere that T-Mobile nexus 6's come out of box network unlocked from T-Mobile. I ran a Sim card manager and its saying I'm network locked????? Here's a screen shot of what the Sim manager said.

Mine is unlocked, I did pay my phone off before trying other carrier sim cards, which worked fine, I only tried VZW & AT&T.

OK so I can go get a att nano Sim slap it in there and it should work?? Or are there other steps I need to take.? I'm sorry I've have never swapped out or had a unlocked device. So if you could please explain what I need to do to get att working on my tmo n6.. I just want to be able to use my phone when I go to my farm out in the country. There isn't any tmo coverage out there but att does have service. I thought it would roam on att out there but it don't. I called customer care and they said att towers out there are not able to roam to my n6 for what ever reason. She said they probably will though in the near future.

Pop in the SIM and that's it. Literally. The APNs should populate on their own by inserting the SIM.
The Nexus 6 is fully unlocked. FULLY! Works on all US carriers.

I purchased a T-Mobile Nexus 6 on craigslist for use on Verizon. The phone was not carrier locked when I bought it and the seller assured me he didn't believe the phone to be locked. I do not believe your phone is SIM locked as I just ran the same program on my Nexus 6 and it says the same thing. I believe AT&T's variant is the only one with locked SIM.

Yeah, so the Sim is locked, but the phone isn't.
Used Cricket which is Att MNVO can confirm that T-Mobile bought Nexus 6 is in fact unlocked.
That being said unless Att is the only coverage you get don't go to Cricket. Ran right back to T-Mobile in less than a billing cycle.

So what your saying is since I'm still paying for my n6 through T-Mobile post pay plan that this is why my sim is network locked??? I usually just pay for half the price of the phone and jump to an upgraded phone. See this is what's confusing the heck out of me.. So once again am I going to be able to just put a activated att Sim card in my n6 and I'll be good to go.??? Orrr do I have to pay off the phone? Or do I need to get a unlock code from T-Mobile?? So confused??.the app I used Sim card manager said my Sim card is network locked do I need to unlock or do I just through a active att Sim in and go.? Thanks

I`am speaking for the European situation as it is here, i`am not familiar with the US policy`s tbh. Just put in a non T-Mobile simcard and if you are connected to data and speech there is no problem.
I have the same case as you. I tested with and AT&T Sim and works perfectly. The SIM is locked, the Phone is not.

Is there such a thing as CDMA unlocking? Samsung said that it is carrier-locked to Verizon. Verizon said they no longer lock phones. I could not get it activated on Sprint. They do not accept the IMEI.
Is there any way to make it working on Sprint? Please help. Got stuck with a phone that can not be used. Thanks

Verizon phones are all carrier unlocked. I'm using a Verizon Note 8 on T-Mobile right now.
Couple questions:
1. Have you double checked to make sure the IMEI is clean and clear? If its blacklisted on Verizon, it won't work on any US carrier.
2. Do you have a nano SIM from Sprint that's already activated?
3. Have you tried flashing either the unlocked firmwareor the Sprint firmware on it?
Thanks, Mr. Orange645
The phone was bought brand new a month ago from Best Buy , and used on Verizon for a month. Phone paid off and no contract. IMEI should be clean. I did a check on Ting with the IMEI , and it can be used for GSM.
I have two nano sims from Sprint, both activated and un-activated. The problem is that Sprint can not add the IMEI to their system. I called Samsung and gave the IMEI, and was told that it is carrier-locked to Verizon. I wonder whether there is way to do CDMA unlocking.
I did not try to flash unlocked ROM. I think that IMEI on sprint network is the first step.
So you have a nano SIM that's already activated with Sprint? It's in a Sprint phone right now and has service?
If So, put the activated SIM in your Note 8 and see if you have service.
Sprint shouldn't have to activate your phone, just the Sim. That's how you can buy the Unlocked version from Samsung.com and stick your Sprint SIM in it and have service.
Sprint uses CDMA, and have to add the IMEI to their system to make it work. Also tried the activated sim, with no luck.
There is no "CDMA unlocking," it's either carrier unlocked or it's not. And ALL Verizon LTE Devices are Carrier unlocked.

Have you tried simply factory resetting the device first and then booting up for the first time with the activated Sprint sim in.
Maybe try flashing Sprint firmware?
IMEI is hard-coded. For CDMA, it must be added into Sprint systems. Unless GSM, only a SIM is necessary.
Did Sprint not provide some sort of reason/explanation as to why they are unable to add the IMEI? If they can't do it, surely they can tell you why.
CDMA networks are finicky -- Sprint's in particular -- when it comes to bringing over other carrier devices (even ones with compatible hardware). Some good info in here:

I believe someone is giving you false information. You should be able to place an activated SIM card into the phone and start using it. That's how the unlocked Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note 8 all work. You buy them unlocked and use them on whichever carrier you want, including Sprint. That's how my Nexus 6 worked on Verizon, before I switched to T-Mobile. Verizon also uses CDMA, and they didn't have to add any IMEI into their system. You just put the activated SIM into the phone.
I could take a Verizon SIM and put it into my T-Mobile S8+ right now, and it would activate and get service.
But to answer your original question again, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CDMA UNLOCKING. The phone is either carrier unlocked, or its not. And the Verizon Note 8 is 100% carrier unlocked.
I beginning to suspect you bought a Note 8 with a bad IMEI, if you got it used.
EDIT: I MAY BE WRONG (don't tell my wife, she never hears me say that)
After doing some research on Reddit, it looks like others ran into the same issue as you. The unlocked version and the Sprint version will work, but none of the other carrier Note 8s are eligible for BYOD. Which is stupid, since they are all exactly the same hardware.
I'd try this:
Use ODIN to flash either the Unlocked 950U1 firmware, or the Sprint 950U firmware. Then place the Sprint SIM card in the phone to see if it activates upon start up. If it doesn't then you may be hosed. If that's the case, sign up for T-Mobile. LOL.
Thanks all for the useful information and help. The error they encountered is that they could not load the ESN to the Sprint PLBL database. They got error like incompatible, or unsupported device etc.
Sprint will not add other carries phone to their system. If IMEI is from Verizon it will never work with active or inactive SIM. Only way if it was factory unlocked phone bought from Samsung.
Did anyone find a solution to this? Moved to Sprint BYOD two days ago with my Verizon note8 and it won't work. The phone keeps asking for a Verizon since. I am at second Sprint repair center as I type this. Please tell me it can be fixed. Thanks.
I am in the same boat, Paid off my wife's Iphone7+ and my Note 8 with Verizon and then tried to BYOD with sprint and they are unable to activate. Verizon informed me that their devices are 100% not locked and Sprint has no clue.
You could try other carriers like straightalk or tmobile maybe even metro pcs but it will not work with sprint. They are a pain and don't allow other carrier phones on their network.
I purchased a Verizon Note 8 , which was paid off and unlocked. Successfully activated on Sprint using my existing Active Sprint sim card.
Everything looks good, just one major issue, I am stuck with 3G internet. Still not able to get 4G LTE on Sprint.

you need to enter sprints apn bro then you will have 4G.
I have the reverse issue. I have the opportunity to get a good deal on a Sprint Note 8, but I want to use it on Verizon. Assuming the device is not blacklisted, would there be any issue with this? Buying a sprint-branded phone and using it on Verizon's CDMA network? Are all the bands the same? I get 3 checkmarks on willmyphonework.com (but they didn't have the Note 8 yet, just the Note 7)
