Is anyone using this gimbal and what are the results? It says it is not compatible with p30 pro, but I have heard people using it..
What do you mean? It works fine. No, it doesn't zoom all of the P30 Pros camera features, but to be honest, it doesn't support most phones 100%. I can shoot in 1080p/2160p at 30fps and timelapse, hyperlapse, stabilization etc. works fine. Heck, FiLMiC Pro also supports it, apart from zoom.

I'm trying with the P30 pro, but with the OSMO 2 tracking function it works in jerks, as if the motors couldn't take the weight ... is it, too, to you? Thanks for the reply
Mh, it works fine for me with the P30 Pro. Do you have a case or skin that adds extra weight?

no, I tried without a cover and unfortunately it always goes jerky (only with the traking function)

This phone continues to amaze me. After discovering RAW still capture, now this.
Apparently the Huawei P9 Lite can record 2K and 4K* video. And to top that with a big juicy cherry, you can get bitrates as high as 70MBS, hovering around a 50MBPS constant. AT 2K resolution. This is quite impressive for a phone camera, I'm talking even flagship level.
I'm not even joking.
I mean why not?! Camera API2 supports 4K, the camera sensor supports 4K, I'm not entirely sure about the SoC, but the Kirin 650 is proving to be one of the better, albeit very comfortably mid-range, chips Huawei has produced.
Everyone can try this on their devices, completely hassle-free, safe, wihtout any mods. You do have to buy an app from the Play Store. It's about $13 and that's that. You install the app and choose your desired resolution in the app settings.
The app is called. FiLMiC Pro
A few remarks:
Be sure to have Crop source to overlay turned OFF when filming 2K, or 4K.
4K is TERRIBLE! It's really quite unusable. I've only been able to get around 5-8 FPS video at 4K. Choppy, lots of lost frames.
2K is however quite usable. Clean video, no missed frames, no artefacting.
I've only just found out this works, very accidentally and with a a lot of surprise and enthusiasm. I need to do a lot more test shots before I can form a solid opinion over the gains and benefits. For now I'm really very hyped and not sure if the difference I see is just placebo or not.
What's certain is that this means a lot for whoever's doing any serious filming with the Huawei P9 Lite. Higher bitrates, the ability to downscale 2K to 1080 for extra *MAGIC*... I can't wait to go out shooting video in real-case scenarios and do more testing on the stability and reliability of shooting at these resolutions.
I'd love for more of you to try this and shoot some video so we can compare findings and share opinions.

On the S9+, you can use optical zoom while recording video. It seems to be that this is not the case with the P20 pro for some reason, which would be a deal breaker for me.
Can someone confirm?
Bump
The youtube camera comparison vids from SupaSaf suggest that there is no optical zoom button in Video Capture Mode like on the S9 but you can pinch to zoom (it's just not known whether this is optical or digital but suggests digital to me).
Optical zoom is there. Just no button. Have to use fingers.

That’s disappointing. I’m contemplating just cancelling my order and going back to my S9+. I loved everything about it but the very, very mediocre battery life. But the P20 pro which seemed great with the camera at first now seems to have some major drawbacks (no stabilization at 4K, no 4k60 recording, pictures looking soft, no way to enable beauty mode, etc.). What a shame.
Sorry to exhume this thread, but I'm interested in the topic. I can see why the 5x hybrid zoom might be too taxing for video, but it would be extremely disappointing for the phone to contain a 3x telephoto lens and not contain a 3x optical zoom.
YouTube has a couple new videos, but I'm not sure how to interpret. This one shows digital zoom that strikes me as very disappointing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DOobLhcCqU
This one, on the other hand, to my eye, looks more like optical zoom. It's tough to judge the quality in portrait mode on YouTube, but it looks better than digital zoom to me:
https://youtu.be/mJJw8lLJF8I?t=207
Anyone have any thoughts on this or new experiences with the phone in the last couple of weeks?

Thanks, that was a great video.
Fwiw, I ended up buying it. So long as you take video in 30fps, you get what looks to be sharp, optical zoom. If you film in 1080p60, however, you get a hot mess of digital zoom. The attached shows a frame capture of 1080p30 (pretty sharp) next to 1080p60 (blurry mess). 4K30 looks much like 1080p30 but appears not to zoom in quite as far.
3x video definitely uses optical zoom. You can compare 3x vs 2.7x frame quality.

Interesting! Fwiw, my screenshots were both taken at 10x to maximize distortion so I assume there was some optical/hybrid as well as digital zoom occurring on the 30fps sample and pure digital on the 60fps sample
Hello @Arnova8G2,
I saw your work with the Google Camera Mod for various phones and I just want to say impressive work! I am using the Huawei P20 Pro and absolutely hates the Front Camera functionality. Tried to download your file to use on my phone but was unable to do so. When I try downloading it is says there as a problem parsing the package. Do you by any chance know if it would work with the P20 Pro? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
Dear @Arnova8G2 & @miniuser123,

It makes absolutely no sense to do 40MP. It's the inferior mode, and processing overhead would be insane for HDR, even with full optimisation (which you'll never see on a port). It wouldn't work.
Only 10MP makes sense.
5x is a hybrid zoom. You'd need the Huawei software. Google Camera currently has no such functionality. Not that it supports any optical zoom (3x) by default either.
You can perhaps hope for 10MP with working HDR+ and front camera. Anything else? I'd say it's completely unrealistic / unnecessary.
After the software updates, the only thing I'd really see Google Camera as being useful for is the front camera and / or for AOSP when that becomes stable on the P20 Pro. But by then, a working port of Huawei Camera on the P20/Pro is quite likely - or at least more likely, and certainly more desirable than a Google Camera port.

Yes, I am just hoping for the Front Camera to have the same Portrait Mode as the Google Camera as the Beauty Mode post-processing is through the roof even with it turned to zero. I am just hoping to use the Front Camera I have on the P20 to achieve the same Portrait result as I did from the Pixel 2 XL. Everything else about the P20 camera I can live with. Thank you.

Yes! Finally someone who has the same struggle as I have!
P20 pro is a pretty expensive phone and I am beginning to feel disappointed with the less than stellar quality of its front camera.
I know that its a fixed focus lens on the front but how come Gogle Pixel was able to implement a sharp shooter front camera with a fixed focus? To think that it has 24 Megapixels?!?! Such a scam

I don't think you understand what scam means.
Also, whilst not ideal, I suggest you learn how to work with fixed focus. You will not get bad results with it if you do, now that 'beauty' is in check.

Hi @mudnightoil,
sorry for the rather strong term that I used. But yes, I have been trying to learn some workarounds with a fixed focus front camera. It's just that, it's difficult to adjust because I was just so used to autofocus front cameras like Asus Selfie. I just feel like the 24 megapixel camera of the p20 pro is a wasted potential.
Another argument that I have is with Google Pixel's 8 mp fixed focus lens producing more vivid and sharper selfies than P20 pro's 24 mp.
Both the background and the foreground are sharp. Dynamic range is better! I mean come on! I really hope it could be fixed via software update very soon!

Same issue here ...the rear cameras are great ..but the front camera beautification is just too agressive even when set to zero . A google camera mod with HDR+ in just 10mp for rear camera and portrait enabled on both the front and rear will be really helpful .

That's not a GCam port, that's to install the P20 Pro Camera software on a non-pro P20.
So far as I'm aware you'll need the libs to get it to work properly.
Tbh the pro has a monster camera set up.
The 40mp is more for landscape pics, the 10 for point and shoot.
the selfie cam has been great for me so far.
But then I've only had it since 11am 24th may so I'm sure I'll find some issues.
The rear cameras are great and on average they take better pictures than my Pixel 2. I also end up with pictures that I just otherwise would never have been able to capture with another cameraphone. There are some downsides though where I would love to use a hypothetical GCam port. Outdoor photography is a chore thanks to the auto "greenery" AI thing that cranks the saturation. The 10 MP auto mode also oversharpens like crazy. Pro mode is sometimes useful, but you lose things like HDR or aperture simulation which are lame tradeoffs.
The biggest issue for me though is the front camera, which is completely unusable thanks to the beauty mode that can't actually be fully disabled. I'm using Retrica right now which works pretty well but you lose the nice aperture/bokeh simulation of the P20 camera app. Small price to pay for a human looking face, but anyway that's mainly why I'm hoping for a GCam port.
I am very interested in development. Maybe it's possible.

That's not the case at all from my experience comparing 10 vs 40 vs 3x zoom in various situations.
In low light, 40mp is poor, but in well lit places, 40mp is far more detailed, less over-sharpened, and significantly nicer overall.
It's generally less processed, and HDR etc doesn't seem to be enabled on it, but it's certainly not inferior to 10mp in general, but is occasionally.
If you want to do any post processing, the 40mp is probably better in general... though I guess few would want to do this!

They can add a form of EIS but it'll never be brilliant, it's one of the reasons I wanted a new phone, the OnePlus 5 only had EIS, it's just not good enough.
With the pro though, 800 quid and no OIS throughout? Terrible to be honest.
Anyone has a credible explanation as to why OIS is not present at 1080 60? I can understand it not being available in higher resolutions but really at 1080 60, on a flagship with is marketed as (and by many agreed to be) the best camera phone of the market it's just not acceptable. Found out while waiting for my order to ship and am pretty pi$$ed.
Can we at least hope it will be added with a sw update in the future or it's not possible technically? Is the P20Pro sensor's OIS somehow bound to the 30fps?

1080p @30fps has to be OIS??
I've been at the absolute maximum zoom limit whilst recording and the stabilization is amazing, if that's EIS then it's incredible and a lot better than any OIS i've ever seen on any device, I would say at 1080p 30fps it has OIS unless as i said it's got the best implementation of EIS i've ever seen.
Also @ the OP.
OIS by all accounts is available in the cameras on a hardware level but it's not been implemented, i read this a while ago about the p20 pro, whether or not they'll have this as a feature at some point I don't know, it wouldn't be unlike Huawei to add features but not make them active.

I read somewhere that the rgb and mono hardware moving is for autofocus not ois. It's ais (ai stabilizer) that making the recording good at stabilizing.
Oh not to mention xperia's steady shot is EIS and not OIS and it's pretty good.
So, if it's all digital, does it make even more sense to expect it being available in the future on resolutions greater than 1080 30? I mean at least 1080 60 should be standard in 2018 flagships!

Yes it's AIS. And Sony uses the same excellent stabilisation. Better than OIS hands down. I had Sony phone before. Just a shame that Huawei didn't implement it at 4k and at 60fps.

I read somewhere that the rgb and mono hardware moving is for autofocus not ois. It's ais (ai stabilizer) that making the recording good at stabilizing.
Oh not to mention xperia's steady shot is EIS and not OIS and it's pretty good.

Yea it's absolutely amazing. Never seen anything like it..
yeah EIS is good.. but it crops the image too much. I prefer OIS
So sad you’ll had to buy an stabilizer device.... having the most powerfull mobile in photos of 2018.... I have my iPhone 7 Plus with FHD/60fps with stabilization in fact.... better videos with a mobile of 2016...
Hi guys,
I recently bought an DJI Mobile 3 (Gimbal) and looking to do some Widescreen shooting.
1) I'm supposed to present the film at a 1080 screen, is there any reason to shoot at an higher resolution? I'm thinking to film in 1080p @ 60 fps. Is this optimal?
2) What postprocessing app or/and film-app can I use to get the Widescreen/Cinema view?
Thanks for helping a novice out. I'm making a small commercial for my small company.
1) Unless you want to view it in a theater (which has a standard resolution of 8K) or a quarter of it (for 4K), nope. A 1080p footage will still look good enough at 100-120" provided you watch it from enough distance (3 meters or so). For the framerate, 60fps is the netflix standard, but cinematic movies all use 24fps (very few does 48fps). You can always reencode faster framerate to a slower one, just like you can reencode 4K into 1080p. 30fps tend to have better details, though, so if you after cinematic movie, record in 30fps instead.
2) Instead of postprocessing, get a quality anamorphic lens to get 21:9 aspect ratio. Apexel, Ulanzi, Moment, all have good one.
Little tip: Since you have a gimbal, turn off EIS to get wider view.

Great advice - bless you! Noted.
The Anamorphic Lens from Ulanzi is coming my way in the mail, I'm excited to try it out with the Gimbal.
Any advice on apps or WIN10 software to either shoot in or/and do some amature postprocessing? Should I shoot in the Mi 9 stock app with the Ulanzi on?
Sorry for all the Q's. Totally understand if you can't reply them all.

You can, but if you want more finer controls (like smooth zooming by using a slider or the ability to use external mic unless you have direct USB-C mic), use Open Camera.

Hi man, got a question for you:
How do you feel using the DJI Mobile 3? I've been thinking buying one for a while now. Is it worth the money? Also, since Mi9 does not have OIS and only have EIS (which in my opinion is a bit trashy) does it stabilize well also when you turn off EIS on the phone?

movavi is quite a basic program, but Id suggest going the premiere pro route. Also, if you want the best of the best recording app, buy (or download a cracked apk) filmic pro.
