Will it be possible at some point to use Chromecast as a gateway to use the TV as second independent monitor, rather than a mirror of the laptop/desktop with a browser extension, maybe in conjunction with Ultramon?
I have Ultramon installed in my laptop. When I turn my iPad into a second monitor using an app like AirDisply, Ultramon immediately picks it up as the second monitor and provides all the functionality for a second monitor - position, resolution, task bar, etc.
Can I achieve something similar with Chromecast + Ultramon, if not now in the future?

No the CCast wouldn't do that since it would be a waste since the CCast connects to the same network the Android device does so why send it to CCast when you could send it to the Device directly.
CCast does however act as a second monitor for Android and other devices...

Future, maybe, but the 1-2 second lag from having to compress the video (and Chromecast having to decompress it at the other end) would be annoying at best.

Oh... I never noticed any annoying lag when I use iPad with AirDisplay. I guess iPad has lot more processing power than Chromecast.
AirPlay is designed for screen mirroring and hence low latency. The current methods of Chromecast desktop mirroring essentially make the desktop a video stream first.
Likely this will change once they're screen mirroring is implemented by devices.

I'm telling you. With AirPlay, there is more than mirroring. You can use the iPad as a second monitor. It works perfectly with Ultramon.

Yes, and screen mirroring/output isn't the core intent of Chromecast, and I'm not sure screen mirroring will ever make it to iOS for Chromecast.
Long story short, we all can want Chromecast to be more than it is and it's growing steadily, but there will be limits based on its core design.
Thinking about it more... I think Google could (and probably is) making the screen mirroring similar to how RemoteX works in Windows - instead of sending a picture of a red box, send a command to draw a red box - much less data and identical result as long as both source and Chromecast share the same drawing language and techniques. Definitely possible for Android-Chromecast, not sure if/how it could be implemented outside of code that Google owns though, including Windows as a source.
Apple has a definite advantage there as they can make sure iOS, AppleTV and MacOS all share a common drawing implementation.

Problem is, can't use computer when full screen for other tasks
You cannot use the computer screen for anything else when using Chromecast. thios would be a win win
Is there a way to have apps such as Netflix send to Chromecast by default?
I have a tablet dedicated to chromecast control but have to tell it to use chromecast each time in each app.
I'd settle for having to tap the cast icon each time but that I have to then specify which chromecast to send to when I only have one is infruriating.

While I'm sure it could be done but it wouldn't make sense to do because what happens when you want to watch something on the tablet or phone?
Consider this...With the right TV the two Cast button presses are in lieu of having to change the input on the TV since selecting a CCast will change the input for you and even turn the TV on if it was off.
Also, as mentioned elsewhere, the Cast button is designed to a pop-up menu, giving the option to disconnect, as well as see the label of the Chromecast.
I can understand the convenience, but I actually prefer the two-tap, with the AllCast beta which supported "always use this Chromecast" for single-click use, I had accidentally tapped and turned on the TV. Then I had to get the TV remote to turn the TV off, since Chromecast doesn't do that.

That's awesome!
I'm using the Gear's Media Controller app. On my rooted Note 3, I froze the Samsung Music app, then the Gear's Media Controller app controls whatever the front most media app is on the Note 3.
So I'll launch the Yatse XBMC remote app, and can then control XBMC with the Gear!
...nothin' as elaborate as what you've got there though, all I can do basically is pause/play.
So, how do you do this?

recently rooted my gear and have the watchon app on my note 3.
#DoWant to get the mile and put it on my gear! digging through XDA now for the gear .apk from the version pulled from the samsung store. Surprised the NULL rom didn't have support for it... although that's quite a bit to ask for my rooted watch now that I read it again

Thanks for your comment, but I'll wait until Shinji replies with his setup.
Firstly thank you for posting the video links!
Everything is very simple, I just install the rom Nul_23 on my gear (for my gear can access the Internet via bluetooth) and after I installed via playstore Yatse the application. One thing to be careful is to set Yatse in such a way as it can sync, without wifi (just a setting unchecked it seems).

I can't setting host in Yatse, at least in free version. always got failed to connect host even all settings done correctly. But it gives me idea to check Official XBMC Remote app that I'm using on my note 3 to contol XMBC conected via HDMI to my HDTV, and it works birliant! I can now same time control XMBC installed in my note 3 and on my PC by switching hosts instantly! Its now best media controler for Galaxy gear! I can brose folders added to library in note or PC and play control XMBC in every aspect and fucntion! I was looking for some media controller but this is better then I could even think!
Ok, quickly tutorial how to:
0) Connect your gear with phone, set up internet thetring and bluetooth internet access on gear
1) Install on your device prompt version of XMBC (Windows on PC or Android on your phone or both)
xbmc.org/xbmc-13-1-gotham-rc1/ (scroll down to find links under "Conclusion")
2) Install Official XBMC Remote on your Gear
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.xbmc.android.remote
3)Then you have to install another app on your gear that can open menu soft key inside your Gear to add and set up host:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhoadster91.floatingsoftkeys
4) Open Floating Soft Keys *ROOT* and try to set it up to your needs, try to play with this app as it very usefull and easy to understand. Soft keys will stay always on top of other apps, when you thick "collapse to notification.." when you long press back button it will collapse and can be reopen from notification bar by tap on "click to..
5) Now open your XMBC program on device and follow instructions to config XMBC:
yatse.leetzone.org/redmine/projects/androidwidget/wiki/XbmcConfig
6) Now you need to find out your IP (Windows: Start-run-cmd-ipconfig, Android 4.4.2 note 3: click on your wireless connection)
7) Open Official XBMC Remote on your Gear, tap menu key from floating soft key, Add Host: set up same as in XMBC main app and click connect.
8) Enjoy!
You can add more then one host from manage XMBC hosts in settings and simply switch between them from menu!
(this is my frist tutorial ever so please be kind

My device is rooted, and it still doesn't work. It worked with my Moto X Play. I have a 2015 Sony Bravia TV.
Can you describe what you did to get it working?

goto settings>display>cast (last option) , click the screen to cast , better to play from youtube app and then press the cast option from there it will only cast the youtube
Its working fine for me, everytime but only with the cast devices or TV , yes it don't have wireless cast ( not needed for hardware casting) so it work on any soft based cast systems , you can use third part apps to get cast/mirror on device

Remove # from this line on build.prop, save and reboot.
I'd rather not do that, as it breaks OTA updates.

Well, why not do it temporarily to see if it works. Can always change back.
Not as if OTA updates are happening every day.

thanks

You need to either connect the phone with a wire (USB - C to HDMI) or if you have like a Roku box or Google fire stick then you can use SMART VIEW or a mirroring app.. Swipe down at the top and you should find SMART VIEW in there somewhere..

Phones camera to record and send to the TV at the same time.. Just turn the camera on while it's connected to the TV and it should show whatever is on the screen.
Can't you just get a pdf of the book and then mirror it to the tv as suggested?
