I currently use Waze on Android Auto. I do not like Google Maps. Is there any other GPS App that works on Android Auto? Example: TomTom
No..

Google doesn't allow other offline GPS apps on android auto.
There is a lot of information about this issue.
It seems that Google wants to back their own ****y Google maps and collect/mine all information possible, probably for their autonomous car project.
Apple was in the same position but they have finally allowed sygic in carplay.
Google is being sued in Italy for monopoly and banning other apps from android auto.
We all hope that sygic and tomtom are soon allowed, but Google hoy their own plans which care nothing about users.

You do know that Google owns Waze, right? Its just a different UI on the same product.

I did not know, thank you. I wonder what the reasoning is for 2 different map programs is? One is clearly light years above the other in the user interface.
Hello
I have tested on carplay and sygic work beautiful, no data connection, no extra heat on my 6s iphone. Unfortunately i use everyday an android phone, who not allows using offline navigation in AA. Shame!!!
I have asked some people around about modify or adapt some navigation apk to be added in AA. The answer was no. Application that work in AA are signed by google, white listed in PlayServices and so on... No alternatives. That`s freedom of choice; choice of developer.
Now that android auto has a new ui, i have an idea to somehow use other gps software..
In new ui, android auto is starting in waze screen (if not to all, it is probably a settings choise for this).
So, if we use aa mirroring app, perhaps if we rename android auto mirroring app to waze app (inside the code the Internal name of aa mirroring) then perhaps aa mirroring will auto start, so if we have another gps app running it will show instead of waze..
I haven't try it yet, if i do i will post if the idea does work.
I just had the idea and wanted to share..
I don't know if anyone understand my idea. English is not my native language. I can't describe it better..
Hi, have you found a solution to have other gps in android auto without going through aa mirror ?

It was some discussion about TomTom Navigation maybe we can use in carplay. But until now no new information.

There are those lucky users who are able to fake a carrier and install apps not available in their country with Android Market 3.xx. I am but possibly the lesser ones who though managed to fake carriers using Market Enabler / Market Acess but still unable to search for apps which are not available to my country.
Now this is a working workaround method that I've tried using 2 types of Market Enabler available in the Market and also Market Access.
Who should be using this workaround?
Users who successfully faked a carrier using Market Access / Market Enabler with Android Market 3.xx but still unable to find certain apps within the new market 3.xx.
Tested Working with the following
Market Access
http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
Market Enabler
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.notenking.mf&hl=en
Market Enabler
https://market.android.com/details?id=ch.racic.android.marketenabler&hl=en
1. Install Market Enabler or Market Access
2. Run Market Enabler / Market Access
3. Fake a carrier from within Market Enabler / Market Access
4. Open your browser
5. Search using keywords like "Google Earth Android Market"
6. Click on the searched results and select to open with "Market"
7. You will be re-directed to Android Market
8. Once market opens, you will see your desired app and will now be able to install.
9. Once you installed, I recommend you select "Allow automatic updating".
10. You may restore your value back to your original carrier.
11. From now onwards, if there is any updates (even though it is not available in your country) it will be automatically updated when available.

Just my little experience: Pandora does not update if you don't fake the carrier, so auto update would fail.
Don't know but suppose this is valid for other apps too.

I got books updated automatically without faking carrier.
But that's not my point of this post actually. The point is even with faked carrier I can't find the apps. So thru browser it actually finds it.
Nice find. Previously I had to revert to Market 2.x and install a paid app. It works through browser. Tnx
You're not allowed Google Earth? Wow, your country sucks
Good advice though, and I was able to update Google Books and Google Music automatically without faking, just needed it to install as you say.

Well you can't buy any music with Google Music, so I doubt it. Can't say about books any more though, as it is now officially available in the UK.
Unless you use Market Enabler though, the books option wont appear in the Market, but with it you should be able to.

I have denied access to location for many apps, almost all that were asking (focusing on better battery life), maybe that could be the reason
Does anyone have had the same issue?

Hi,
I found myself in the same situation. Brand new Mi4C, latest stable firmware and Google Maps is not even activating GPS (toolbar symbol missing). Other apps like OruxMaps or GPSTest worked immediately.
I found the solution here:
http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=redirect&goto=findpost&ptid=182587&pid=3438377
Turns out that while Google Maps may have enough permissions, the Google Play Services and Google Services Framework also need permission to "Get location info".
So, open MIUIs Security app and check the permissions of those three apps.
For me, the Google Play Services had a red cross (deny) for the get location info permission.
After changing it and restarting Google Apps, the location icon immediately appeared in the toolbar and Maps showed my location.
I'm not sure where the red cross came from. Maybe - during installation - it requested the location and I hit deny because why would it need it..
Anyway, hope this helps.
Jochen
It still doesn't work for me
I too am experiencing the same issues, not with one, but have tried two brand new Redmi Note3 mobiles (Amazon was good enough to replace my first mobile even when my replacement/refund window was almost over). But both sets have same problem (Again Amazon is kind enough to refund my money, but I really wanted to keep this set if only it worked ok).
Many apps are able to find GPS location, but Google Plus, Mi Browser and some other less known apps are not able to find GPS available to them (even all permissions are fully ok with them).
I even contacted Xiaomi on this, but what they all asked me was to visit their service center which is some 225 KMs away from me (whole Punjab state has only 1 or 2 Xiaomi Service Centers).
Check the following screen shots showing the permissions (as instructed by Xiaomi) and also video links which I've recorded, one for faulty RMN3 and other for the same app on Micromax (this shows how G+ location is expected to work if there was no fault).
Pls find the youtube video links in the end.

I just tweeted Waze asking when we can expect Waze to be compatibly with Android Auto. Awaiting a response.
I've never used waze, but how will that functionality be different from what is already offered with Google maps?

Search youtube for videos regarding Waze.
For a short explanation: Waze is a crowdsourced mapping solution. Users that are actively navigating via the Waze navigation input road conditions, pot hole locations, debri in the roadway, road closures, traffic jams, traffic accidents, construction areas, and where police are located. This notifies other Waze users who are going through the same area of the aforementioned conditions ahead. After a few users pass through the area and do not see the tagged item, they simply let the app know that it is no longer there, and it gets cleared from the map. So it is constantly updated and fairly accurate.
City road contruction actually has been known to use waze to locate pot holes that need to be repaired around the cities.
It will be Android Auto's main killer app.
Oh sounds awesome! Does Google maps already pull in waze data and this functionality will allow users to update it or will waze be a standalone navigation app?

Waze is standalone.
However, some data is cross referenced with google maps. The only thing I've seen cross over is traffic accidents. Google bought out Waze not too long ago.
Within google maps it will actually show that it was inputted through Waze.

I would love to see Waze on AA. But with big buttons to easily tap while stuck in traffic. They better not say they won't for the driver safety reasons. The whole idea of Waze is for the driver to submit notifications while driving

I'd expect it to be integrated with voice commands. That way you wouldn't have to tap anything to report road conditions.

This could be the method of integration with Android Auto then. And Maps can be pickier about not showing distracting info or offering methods of inputting data.
Is there some setting required ?
I can't see any Waze stuff in Maps, on Nexus 9 with Android N dev preview or on One M8 with MM GPE.

If Maps is not installed, AA will attempt to install it, and refuse to run if it is not installed.

Not a good idea. Waze's interactivity and user-generated reports are far more accurate and more interactive than what Google Maps currently offers. I would rather run the Waze program as a standalone. Not sure what Google's approach for it is considering they have to either pick between one or the other or having to put in resources to bring Waze to the AA market and maintain both at the same time.
There's still no updates from the development team regarding bringing Waze to AA other than "it's coming." Only time will tell.
I'm afraid this will never happen.
At beginning I was very excited about AA. There are (still) many issues/bugs and I'm running a Nexus device + OEM head unit. No hack anything standard and it's still not stable.
Second point is AA is very proprietary and closed and limited. Google wants you to use Maps and nothing else. Devs can only brings apps to messaging and media. Moreover AA apps have to be deployed through playstore. As a result you only find very few AA apps in the playstore.
Now I think that a basic mirroring solution would be a better. choice. Mirrorlink already exists but is not widely deployed (Nexus devices don't support this).

What will never happen? Google owns Waze, doubt they would say it's coming for AA and then not actually do so..granted vendors say things and not deliver, but I suspect that Waze, which is an ideal AA app, is definitely on AA's roadmap.
So I don't think we will ever see Waze on our head units. I think Waze really wants to go to AA but Google has to agree with that. Google has to open more AA APIs for Waze. So the decision is up to Google not just Waze. I really hope I'm wrong.

Hi all,
Now that Nokia have confirmed they are not rolling out Android 10 to the original Nokia 8, it's time for me to look into another option: a non-Google AOSP variant.
I've done a bit of searching and reading up, but not much. I think it's not possible to have what I would like, which is:
AOSP based on Android 10, no Google Apps, but with the Google Play Store.
My understanding is that the Play Store requires Google Play Services, and I really, really want to get away from that with all its data privacy invasion and the contagion it's spreading out to other aspects of my phone.
So, my questions are:
1. What's the best AOSP variant based on Android 10 that has no Google that will work on an original Nokia 8?
2. Is there any non-Google app store that will have the likes of banking apps and other such confidential data sensitive apps, and is also likely to have some of the other apps I need?
Thanks in advance,
Ian J.
First of all, we wont be having android 10. It may be possible with T-virus but not until Sirocco gets android 10.
There is another replica of playstore called Aurora store. It have everything that play store have. Aurora store is available on F-droid.

You could use any AOSP / AOKP or any other variant of GSI that suits you alongside with T-Virus of course to gain Treble capabilities and use MicroG instead of Google Framework. It's a fully open-source reimplementation of google services that's not as invasive as Googles solution but also lacks support and compability in many cases. I did not use it with Nokia 8 but I'm pretty much sure it will work just fine. Back when I had it on my previous phone it did improve battery life by alot but also had issues with GPS / Loc. because of Googles proprietary solution being not embedded in such projects. You've gotta setup Deja Vu by Mozilla or Apple backend for GPS which work just fine too.
You can find out more in here: https://microg.org/
As store replacement you've got Aurora, Yalp and FakeStore.apk (it's a frontend for MicroG.. at least it used to work)
Many thanks for the replies.
I'm not sure I need the Location services, I'm not interested in any application having access to my location other than TomTom's Go app for driving and GPS Status for just that, the status of the GPS, and they only need the built in GPS.
As for Project Treble, is that required? I would have thought that in order to take advantage of it, a phone would need to be quite cosy with Google in order to get the OS updates.
I will check out the suggested app stores to see what they have, and see what apps I currently use that might be missing so I can see if I can live with alternatives.

For alternative play store. U can try "apkpure". I use it on my other devices where there are no gappa installed.
I've looked into the apps available elsewhere and unfortunately such things as banking apps, and tomtom navigation and the like, aren't available widely if at all. Therefore it looks like my next phone will be an Apple iPhone as that at least is more likely to be private from Google's spying play services. I won't use an iPhone for media playback though, they're useless for that. I'll retain the Nokia 8 and remove the sim card, and use it as an MP3 player.

I've been going crazy for months but it doesn't work for me.
I also tried to install google maps & services via ourplay from vivo store (ourplay creates a sandbox), in which version of map the timeline is active but does not record my movements.
ive upgeaded to Ocean by OTA
Forget the sandbox. You may be aware that it is highly unlikely that one phone has a timeline and the other doesn't and the hardware or the system is the cause.
The more probable cause is your google account or settings. Therefore, I advise you to first check if your device is GPlay certified in settings. If not, you should achieve it by adjusting your google account (on a computer) or reset the phone.
Another useful approach is checking the timeline on other phone (or tablet). You may borrow one if you don't have it. If hte timeline works, the problem lies in your phone, otherwise in the google settings.
It doesn't work for me. Device side problem as it works on other android tablet.

Did you check if you're device is google play certified? If yes, check settings and permissions. If it doesn't help, try to factory reset the phone and set everything from scratch.
I don't have the button for the verification from the play store, but only an application verification
But you do see "device is certified" under the Google Play - Settings - About?
I can't turn on location history either. It just has in Italics "Location History is off"
Can't select any toggle to turn it on.
In play store it shows my Device is certified.
History works fine on my other devices.
Live View for walking directions is also always greyed out on my Vivo for some reason.

Inspecting the issue thoroughly, I found that the location history actually doesn't work. The reason that I was mistaken is the fact that I use a dedicated car dongle in order to have Android Auto. And all time history I have has been plotted with this device. Last month I was travelling and got zero timeline.
I tried to enable it and totally failed. As it can be seen from the attached picture, my phone is not and can't be included in the location history.
I searched the web and found the probable reason. Chinese Vivo doesn't have full Google framework, only basic. Hence, it can't communicate with Google servers in full. That's why we can't make backup as well.
Actually, I don't miss the location history on the phone that much. But if someone is interested, there is an instruction to enable it here:
[FIX] [All Amazon tablets] Enable/Fix Google Location Services [MARCH 2019]
****UPDATE MARCH 7, 2019:**** If the guide below doesn't work for you, see additional instructions at the end. This seems to be a huge problem for many users...location services not working when the Google Play store is installed. I have found a...
forum.xda-developers.com
Of course, it is for a rooted device. But there is a slight chance enabling it without the root. The most important is getting the full Google service framework to the phone.
Otherwise, I guess, we are out of luck.
The non complete framework is the reason why many google features don't work:
- android auto;
- location history;
- google backup;
- "OK Google" voice activation.
Thanks for the explanations on the problem.
I tried to download the apk files.
Already the first on the list does not install due to a security exception.
I also tried to download the latest versions but I have the same error.
Any solution without Root?
