I use the HTC home screen and the weather panel is set to automatically update but at least half the time I check it there's a message stating that it is attempting to download the weather and then I have to wait for it. Does anyone know a way to force it to auto-update every x hours or otherwise just not go stale? Thanks
are your connection settings correct? did you disable the proxy?
I'm going to admit something that I wish i didn't have to- of all the things I've done to my phone I've never understand the disable/enable proxy so I've never touched it. I'm running the AT&T stock ROM but I stripped it of the bloatware (i.e. disabled it by hard resetting). If disabling the proxy is the answer then I'll try it - I've seen the cab around.
I disabled proxy using KaiserTweaks and it hasn't changed it. After a period of time I still get the 'attempting to download weather information' screen. Is there any correlation to home screen time out that you know of? There are no other settings regarding weather that dictate the frequency of weather updating that I can find... Thanks again
i turned off the home screen timeout and I'm still getting the same error - any other ideas? I had the same issue on my 8525...
home screen timeout is the set amount of idle time before the today screen automatically shows up again (as opposed to whatever program that you left running)
Gotcha. Any way you know of to force a program to refresh then? I guess simpler - how to make the 'automatic updates' in HTC home really automatically update the weather so it's invisible to me (and I don't have to wait for it to download each time). Thanks

You can use emuntuz HTC Home Customiser to set weather to auto-update each time it goes stale (even has an option to disable when roaming)
Be aware though, like any regularly-used open connection, you may see quicker than usual battery drain compared to not having auto-update.

you need to go into settings--connections--connections--manage my proxy
then uncheck the box that says "this connection uses a proxy"
Can somebody post what the actual change that HHC makess that allows it to autoupdate when stale? HHC does not run on Smartphones, so it would be nice to be able to make the changes.
I've tried both the home customizer and disabling the proxy (which I verified by going to device.home which failed as expected). The weather option to autoupdate is checked in the app itself and in the home customizer app and proxy is disabled and every two hours or so I still get the 'attempting to download' message and I have to wait for it. Am I the only one getting this? I'm surprised there's no setting to download weather every x hours somewhere in the app. I'd explore the registry but I think that's beyond my knowledge...
OK..Hope this is the proper place to post this...
I am horrible at remembering to charge my phone, thus I don't keep GPS on at all time because of battery drain. However, I find it frustrating that every time I start Google maps that I have to enable the GPS. It seems to me that there should be a function built into that app which would enable the user to have it automagically enable the GPS reciever on the apps start up. To my knowledge this isn't possible but I feel it would be very useful. So, does anyone know how one would achieve this? Would it be possible to write a script that would accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for the input.
Menu button, Settings, Security & Location, set "Enable GPS satelites"
if you enable gps it wont actually turn on until you open google maps or a location based program (you will see a satellite dish at the top letting you know if it is on). the gps setting basically just tells the phone if a program requests gps location it is okay to turn the gps antenna on.
otherwise its off and battery doesn't get affected
Thanks...
Hey dk75 & averma, thanks for the posts. I should really read the fine print on some of these menu options prior to asking these questions...oops!
Hello!
My wife and me use latitude (from google) to see where we are on Google maps. Latitude works best if the GPS is on. HOWEVER, we just need to see each other on google maps when we are driving home (between 17:00 and 18:00). If i turn on the gps, latitude will eat the battery the whole DAY...) I would like to know if there is a way to schedule the activation of the gps...

Try looking up "Locale" on the market. App isn't free, but most of the plugins for it are, and you can combine the functions of the plugins to do almost anything.
I use it for exactly what you're talking about myself.
Google Maps doesn't Auto-start GPS
Hi all,
I know this thread is pretty old but hoping for a reply all the same. I'm using the Galaxy S in the Uk with Google Maps & Navigation. I used to have the HTC HERO running maps & navigation and whenever I started either of those apps, the little atenna would appear to show that it was trying to find a gps position.
However, on my Galaxy S, whenever I start Maps or Navigation nothing happens. Even though I have "use wireless networks" and "use GPS satallites" both checked.
I cant imagine that technology would have taken a step back from such a useful feature and it is really irritating having to remember to disable/enable GPS (using SwitchPro home screen widget) before being able to use Maps or Navigation.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this??
Install Tasker app and create a profile that enables GPS when you run Maps app.
tasker
tasker does not let you autostart gps... is there any other way. i also hate having to turn on gps and right under enable gps in blue words under settings it says< uses more battery. i can send pic

i have spent sometime now lurking behind the scenes in this group and
have read, in detail, my share of the posts. Make no mistake, the
guys here are experts and being experts their methods/explanation
often goes way over the head of the typical noob. this post is to
introduce this wonderful application of tasker to the inimitable
noob. i hope my effort would ease someone's labour.
imagine this scenario: you switch on maps on your phone and keep
wondering why it does not show your precise location and then it hits
you! you did not switch on your GPS. this post explains how to create
a profile that switches on your GPS automatically when you fire up
maps.
Just remember this: Profile is the context i.e. what you want to do.
in the present case, you want to first start maps and when maps is
started you want to switch on GPS. then when you exit maps, you want
GPS to be switched off. this is the object.
Stage 1: In profile tab click the + sign. give a name like 'MAP'.
this name will identify the profile that is currently active. after
you name it press the green tick and you are shown several options
like application, time, day etc. Now maps come under applications, so
press applications and all the appliations in your phone are
displayed. scroll down and select maps and press the tick mark. at
this stage you have told tasker that whatever you want to do revolves
around maps.
Stage 2: Now that you have hinted to tasker about the application
that is to be run, we should next state what should happen when the
appliation is started. after you press the tick mark you will be
shown a window asking for task selection. press new task and give it
a name like switch on GPS.
Stage 3: after baptising the task, you will be taken to a broad
window . press the + mark on the bottom left and the confusion
begins. a pletora of options is thrown at you (this is why tasker is
so darn powerful). this is called the 'select action category'.
digressing a little here you should know that google has changed
something with android and you cannot in the usual course toggle GPS.
so you should download an app called 'secure settings' (from google
play) and install it. once it is installed open it and it gives you an
option to install a helper. install the helper also. this activates
the GPS option.
Stage 4: once that process is completed, come back to tasker and get
yourself to the 'select action category'. here press on plugin and
then on secure settings. in the next window, touch 'edit' and then
scroll down to GPS and touch it. three options are displayed viz. on,
off and toggle. choose on and press the floppy disk icon to the
bottom left. press the tick mark and again press the tick mark. at
this stage you have succeeded in activating GPS when maps is started.
however, when you exit maps you find that GPS does not switch off by
itself.
Stage 5: to make it switch off by itself, you need to create the same
task again. just long press on the task which has already been
created (called here as switch on GPS) and you are presented with
several options. select the first one - 'add exit task' and follow
the process as in stage 4. however, instead of choosing 'on' select
'off' this time. once this is done come out and test it.
Stage 6 - and the most important - Feel happy and satisfied.
i am sure there should be some easier way to do this. however, in my
limited understanding of tasker this was how i did it. i really am
confused about the variables. i hope someone will help. when i say
confused, i should clarify that i have no inkling of what it does. :
( could someone tell me where to read up on it? i have searched on
google and i havent found any satisfactory explanation.
i will continue to post my profiles and i hope it is of help to the
group here.

Thank you for your post, I wouldn't be able to do it without you man!
I have a question. I'm using LBE security master which monitor my firewall, wifi, adware, etc. is there a way for tasker to check in LBE firewall and toggle my wifi/data when I want it? instead of creating a new profile for ON/OFF wifi. I just want it to look in my app and see what app has permission to what and allow/un-allow.
Thanks again!

Yes is does autostart if you want with tasker..

You can use the "Auto-Enable GPS for Maps" application, which switches both WiFi and GPS on when you launch Maps, Navigation, Local or Latitude, and restores them to their old state (e.g. switched off) when you quit these apps.

How to enable the location settings along with the GPS ON task?
After doing quite a bit of searching, both on XDA and on Google, I have yet to come across a thread that adequately addresses and resolves the following issue:
Since upgrading to Android 2.1 for my HTC Hero from Sprint, My Facebook contacts have not synced properly with the people app. They do not show up under my contacts, and pictures/status do no sync. Even if I try to manually link the contact to Facebook, my friends list does not load up and instead just says, "No matches found."
I have tried removing my Facebook account and re-adding it to no avail. I have also checked my sync options under settings. One forum (for the HTC Desire) suggested opening the people app, and going to the online directories tab at the bottom (a little globe icon which it appears the Hero version of the people app does not have) where you can select Facebook manually and have it sync.
Hopefully some of the excellent devs here on XDA can help me get to the root of this problem.
So, any suggestions?
good luck on that answer, only found alyouis or what not is the only one i found to work and sync

I have developed a brute force method that has worked in all but one case.
Called the "Regaw Brute Force" method lol
1. Remove your current FB account.
2. Go to Settings > Accounts & sync > Add account.
3. Click on Facebook For HTC Sense.
4. Sign in
5. It will show the sync icon for a small amount of time.
6. Go to the homescreen and click on people
7. Slide over to updates and events (you will see none yet)
8. Do the "Regaw Brute" method: Click menu > refresh 5 times quickly (so menu > refresh, menu > refresh..... 5 times)
9. Let your Hero sit for up to 15 minutes on this screen, letting the screen turn off.
10. If after about 15-20 minutes, all of your pictures aren't synced, repeat steps 8 and 9 again.
11. Repeat step 10 if necessary
same issue, the one thing I find interesting. If I use a different facebook account it signs in and starts to download everything instantly. No com.htc.bg and bgp errors.
mine is weird, it will update some contacts but not all.. it usually gets up to the C's or M's then won't do any more

hey thanks, this seemed to work for me
i deleted my old facebook for htc sense account, restarted my phone, did the refresh thing (except i did it about ten times in a row), left it alone for about 20 minutes and everything was synced.
thanks again!
When I do the "Regaw Brute Method" I get a force close on com.htc.bgp. So apparently that service has something to do with it.
Think there's any way we can take the people app from the HTC Desire or different working Hero ROM and port it over?
EDIT: Also I noticed that at least my own profile picture is now synced. I'll try the brute method again.
Mod edit: not dev related, moved to q&a
Okay, I've done this with 4 diff roms and i'm batting 100%....
If you're using autokiller (or moded internal taskkiller) set it back to "normal".
reboot (just for good measure)
run logcat and sync.
look for "com.htc.bg(p) died". If you see it, you're screwed.
Every time i've had sync issues since going to 2.1, this has been the cause.
Hope this helped.

Regaw's method def works for syncing contacts. The only problem that I still have that I hope someone will figure out is my Facebook calendar syncing with the HTC calendar where even though in the calendar settings it shows the Facebook calendar checked off, none of my events show up in the Calendar app...

p.s. I just install the newly released stock sprint 2.1 update....still a no go, still get the com.htc.bg errors.
I found other HTC phones having the same issues. This is the HTC Desire fix.....to bad we don't have a globe/interenet icon in our people app.
Go to the PEOPLE(contact list) app. Go to the Online Directories (globe) tab. Hit Facebook. You will be asked to log in to your Facebook account. Once logged in, it will show all of you contacts on your Facebook account. Go back to the full list of your contacts on the phone and try and sync.

I am having a similar issue, but Regaw's fix does not work. I can get to step 3, but when I click on "Facebook" to add a new account, the phone cycles back to the "Account & Sync Settings" screen and I don't get any prompts to login to my facebook account. Oddly, I don't even remember getting the prompts to set up my facebook account when I first flashed this ROM. Here is my info:
-------------------------
Firmware Version: 2.1-update 1
Baseband Version: 2.42.01.04.27
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-GoDmOdE-Darchshizz-OC [email protected] #1
Mod Version: Darchstar-2.6.4
Build Number: EPE54B
-------------------------
Any ideas?
Edit: Here are some common things that I found throughout logcat that may or may not be helpful in resolving the issue; just thought I'd post them for whoever might be able to help me out
D/AccountSettings( 147): added authority com.android.contacts to accountType com.facebook.auth.login
V/AddAccount( 147): Attempting to add account of type com.facebook.auth.login
I/ActivityManager( 147): Starting activity: Intent { cmp=com.facebook.katana/.LoginActivity (has extras) }
Logcat repeats those three things consistently throughout the file.
there is something real buggy with the syncing and the size of the contacts.. see my other thread, my contacts got up to 30mb
i would love to just go back to the 1.5 people app, especially because you could pull fb info from the server without storing it locally...

Apparently I can't use my Google App account ([email protected]) with Now on Tap. It works when I switched to my Google account ([email protected]). Hope that helps.
I'm having this problem too, and like you, I have a Google Apps account I'm using for my phone (I own the domain, and am the administrator). I'm going to have to look into this; either it may not be enabled for Google domains yet, or, it may have to be turned on, something I just found out with Google Maps (which was turned off in my Apps, so I couldn't access it until I turned it on).
I'll take a look, and if I find something, I'll post back.

Okay, here is what I found for Google Apps for Domain Users.
For Google Now On Tap to work, the Web History service must be turned on in your Google Apps Domain. However, finding this is a real pain. Here is what to do:
The problem is the "x" to remove the filter is all the way on the right (in chrome).
1. Log In to your Google Apps admin control panel
2. At the bottom of your dashboard click on "More Controls", then "Apps"
3. Click "Additional Google Services"
4. Remove the Filter "Top Featured Services" by clicking on the "x" on the upper right side.
5. Scroll to the bottom and find Web History
6. Click the "On" Button

I am told this may take a bit to trickle down to one's phone (sometimes up to 24 hours to all users in the domain). I have made the change myself, but have not been able to turn Now On Tap on yet. However, others have reported this as what does the trick.
If I had not found this through a Google community thread, I'd have no idea how to do it. It's certainly convoluted and the admin control panel doesn't make it easy to find, nor would I have had any idea that this was the fix. I'll update everyone with my results once I've had time to see if the change takes effect.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: If you do not have the following setting enabled on your phone, you cannot turn on Now On Tap:
Settings->Search & Now->Accounts & Privacy->Google Activity Controls->Web & App Activity must be set to ON.
Hi all. Sharing a quick tip that made me a happy man. I have always preferred the desktop site view on the main screen. In the past I had to toggle on desktop view for each new tab but have found a method to toggle it on depending on the screen the tab is opened in automatically.
Launch chrome
Enter this url in the browser: chrome://flags
In the search box, search for “desktop”
Look for “request desktop site for tablets on android"
select "enabled for 100dpi+ screens" and restart the browser.
Chrome should indicate you need to restart the app and provides a button. If missed, make sure to restart Chrome later (use task kill or something similar) and it should now give you the respective formatted screen on the display in use.
I selected 100dpi vs a higher one, but it seems to work so I kept it in that setting. If others see otherwise please comment.
If not working, check post 2 item 2 as a newer build temporarily broke this. Hopefully fixed in newer. Please post if working on newer builds and I will update this post.
Also note: I use Resolution changer (again no root needed) to modify my resolutions somewhat by fine tuning the density to get more screen real estate. Another very nice update to get a better "desktop" browsing experience.
Change list and notes for post #1.
1. Corrected 1st post: updated URL removing HTTP.
2. Looks like the latest version broke this (96.0.4664.45 from 11/15/21). I restored the 11/4/21 version:
com.android.chrome_95.0.4638.74-463807410_minAPI21_maxAPI23(armeabi-v7a)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apkand got the functionality back. Hopefully this gets fixed in the next latest build. (Don't forget to turn off auto update in google play).
3. Corrected step #4 in post 1. The look for target was truncated and not completely written out.
4. The December 15, 2021 release of Chrome still is broken so stick to the known good listed above. Even the flag to set all to desktop does not work. If anyone sees otherwise do let me know. I may file a bug on this. I filed a bug on this here.
5. With the newer chrome version breaking this I did find one other useful tidbit. Setting the "Global setting to request desktop site on Android" to enabled (in the chrome://flags page) makes a new toggle in settings -> Site settings. This is labeled "desktop site" and turning it on will enable desktop site to be the default on all pages (main and cover). Not as useful as the intial post but helpful if you want to force it on or have it as the default (can still toggle it off).
6. Chrome beta is missing the "“request desktop site for tablets on android"" so possibly gtting phased out? Hope not.
7- I filed a bug on this here: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1280779
If you are using this, please go here and up vote the issue so it will get fixed.

the builtin samsung internet browser (which is far superior to chrome and others) has the feature, together with dark mode, one-button adblock disabler for cocky sites etc.
thanks @vratnik that's good to know. I played with it some. It does not auto adjust to mobile on front and desktop on primary. That's the key thing of interest with this on chrome. But I do find the Samsung browser to be working much better than it did years ago and worthy of some more use.
Thanks for sharing. Are there any news to make this work??
