Failure of the persist partition - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

TwRP does not want the persist partition, both automatically and manually. Please, send a copy of persist with xiaomi.eu. Earlier links that I found are out of date or in error in zip / rar.

Download the required Dipper images Rom:
Fastboot Rom Link : dipper_global_images_9.6.27_20190627.0000.00_9.0_g lobal_30e0fc22ef.tgz
FYI Trivia: the release date of the firmware doesn't matter, If you use diff or Beyond Compare to analyse file differences you will find nothing different.
Unpack the fastboot rom, and manually extract the persist.img and then place it into the sd folder of your phone using recovery file manager.
Boot to TWRP
Go to advanced , then terminal
type: dd if = / sdcard / persist.img of = / dev / block / bootdevice / by-name / persist
After its finished reboot to system, finished
If that helped you click thanks instead of saying it.
if it doesn't work for you, there are several other ways to do this.

Here I posted a photo of the rom unpacked. Note that the persist.image is there: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79814349&postcount=4
Basically you need the stable fastboot rom for your device ( Global or Chinese) It must be the fastboot rom and not the recovery rom.

I know and I found that ROM but not from the link from the first post which does'nt contain any fastboot ROM.

Well the ROM was updated so the link now apparently goes to the newer build. At the end of the day any fastboot ROM with the built-in flashall.bat script will include all of the needed images.
Here is an additional site that includes multiple releases

The Q version if using Q and vice versa.
The links work, just fine. It's my account on AFH. ( See screenshot)
You may have to wait a few seconds for the source link to open. I checked it just now, obviously and it immediately loaded.

Here is a hint: it's a fastboot rom on the official site. You must use a desktop to download.
You can find direct links on the OP of the Xiaomi.eu thread, here on XDA it's on the OP.

MoFo IMG AT&T XT1097 (root, tether, xposed)

***** This is for the AT&T XT1097 version of the Moto X *****
I have a new image to share with tethering, sqlite and xposed added in. (also fixed the HDR camera bug that my previous image had)
If you have never flashed an image with MoFo before, Please read this great Noob Guide for MoFo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/noob-guide-rooting-verizon-moto-x-2014-t3097375
If you haven't already flashed a root image, I would suggest flashing one before this one so that you can delete the required directories under /data/dalvik-cache
Download stock image with just root here.
Instructions:
1. Download the Xposed Installer if you don't already have it, and install it to your phone but don't do anything with it.
2. Go into your file manager and delete /data/dalvik-cache/arm and /data/dalvik-cache/profiles directories. <----- very important
3. Boot into bootloader and flash the image with mofo.
4. Wipe your cache.
5. Install any Xposed modules and enable them then reboot.
If you start getting play services related force closes then uninstall updates for the Google Play Store and Google Play Services, then reboot. You can either find and reinstall the updates or just wait and they will be updated automatically (I just waited and within a day I was back running the most recent versions).
Version 1: Download Link
Sweet will be downloading when I get home. Would you happen to have a plain rooted one I could flash first

There really is no benefit to taking out any /system partition apps as you can't use the space for anything else. I just use Titanium B/U Pro to freeze the /system apps I don't want.

Yes all apps still there. Like JulesJam said, just freeze the ones you don't want. Easier that way because everyone wants different things removed.

Also, there is no benefit b/c the freed up space is on the /system partition so it can't be used.
However it does speed up the system since smaller memory is consumed. This is a benefit to Roms like cm, pa, liquid and others. Also if you were to remove the libraries associated with the apps it would be less for the CPU to load through. Another benefit would be more ram available for user apps. I would guess on a personal level anyone of us could replace the undesired system apps with the play store apps of your choice. That would be a very reasonable use of the system space.
Just wanted say thank you for this! I have had zero issues since installing this when you created the thread.
Just installed this and everything is complaining about xposed not being installed..
Has anyone tried using the tethering option who is using Straight Talk (At&t MVNO)? I haven't gotten a chance to try it out, wonder if it will work or not...

For some reason the xposed doesn't work for me.
See screenshot from attachment
I got a ATT xt1097
My flash procedure:
1. enter recovery and wipe data/cache
2. flash stock image with just root
3. wipe cache(If I don't do this there will be a bootloop)
4. enter system, turn on Unknown Sources (read from another website), Install Xposed Installer (tried both 2.7 experimental1 and 2.6.1), delete everything in dalvik-cache
5. fastboot flash your mod
6. wipe cache
7. enter system, there is a long updating app process.
8. open Xposed installer and it doesn;t work

Does this work fine even if Im in 5.1 OTA? Xt1097 att off course.

[ROM] AOSP Nougat 7.1.2 | MoltenMotherBoard

Hi, I am sharing my Nougat ROM for LG-P880 with the XDA community. As a tribute to the original @MoltenMotherBoard, it will continue to be named as such.
AFH download:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=109853
ChangeLog
20180122
- Android-7.1.2_r36 (N2G48H)
- kernel
* Optimized kswapd based on kernel-msm/3.10/Bullhead
- Tuned extra_free_kbytes to 4 screen buffers
- Reduced I/O read_ahead_kb from 2048 to 256 for better latency
- Set dalvik.vm.dex2oat-thread = 2
Complete changelog

SELinux for Nougat
SELinux in Nougat has been hardened to never allow text relocation for executables. This is the only rule that we had to relax to enable pre-KitKat blobs to run.
To enable SELinux Enforcing, do this from recovery
Code:
$ adb shell mount /data
$ adb shell touch /data/.selinux
$ adb shell umount /data
Known issues
- MHL not working
- Display freeze on Cast Screen disconnect
- Widevine DRM not working
Broken AOSP components
- Clock
- Browser2
- Music
- Webview
Installation
You need to have custom recovery that can flash multiple zip files without having the reboot. I personally use the official CWM 6.0.4.5 so the instructions will be based on that with no external SD.
>Coming from other ROMs
- wipe userdata/cache
- format /system
- apply ROM zip
- apply Gapps zip ...or more Gapps if using modular Gapps
- format /data and /data/media
- reboot
>Coming from the same ROM
- format /cache
- format /system
- apply ROM zip
- apply Gapps zip ...or more Gapps if using modular Gapps
- reboot
Recommended Gapps is OpenGapps stock. Default webview provider is Google WebView. Please make sure your Gapps include this. Attached you will see my Gapps config.
This is based on Grouper blobs, so as usual barcode/QR scanning will not work and will not consider this as bug. However, Grouper blobs works with Screen Cast, which for me, is more useful than barcode/QR code scanning.
Let the testing begin!!!:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

This doesn't work
o it doesn't. Twrp leads to data partition being encrypted. Whenever WIPE data partition to decrypt, all files are deleted. When reboot into fresh system, copy files again, and reboot into reflashed twrp, data partition is enrolled encrypted again. And no MTP so it's an endless loop.

o it doesn't. Twrp leads to data partition being encrypted. Whenever WIPE data partition to decrypt, all files are deleted. When reboot into fresh system, copy files again, and reboot into reflashed twrp, data partition is enrolled encrypted again. And no MTP so it's an endless loop.

I think you can, if you have unlock bootloader

[Recovery][Stock OOS]Oxygen OS Stock recovery with ADB enabled

While waiting for a working TWRP for all those needful of the possibility to access their file system from recovery, e.g. for removing an offensive magisk extension preventing boot I repackaged the Stock OOS recovery but with ADB enabled.
Prerequisites:
Oneplus 8 Pro
unlocked bootloader
access to fastboot on the phone
adb and fastboot
Installation:
Reboot the phone to fastboot, then flash the recovery from fastboot with the command
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <filename>
(with <filename> being the name of the recovery in the format of "recovery.img" you wish to flash)
Uninstall:
Same as installation, but flash the original stock recovery instead.
Usage:
Boot up recovery, enter encryption key if file system is encrypted. Then connect the phone to PC and you are ready to go with adb. E.g. by using
Code:
adb shell
to open a shell and access the file system. Magisk modules are located in /data/adb/modules, deleting the corresponding directory there will remove the module in question.
Step-by-step this would be:
Code:
cd /data/adb/modules
to change to the Magisk modules directory
Code:
ls
to list the content of this directory, each module has its own directory, usually with a well-recognizable name
Code:
rm -r <directory>
to delete the directory in question. Tip: in console TAB-autocomplete works
Downloads:

Original 10.5.5 BA recovery from Gdrive
10.5.6 BA Recovery

Notes of caution:
ADB security is disabled as I could not get the recovery to allow for authorizing a connected computer. As a consequence any computer connected is automatically authorized in ADB, although with encrypted filesystem at least no data is accessible without the key.
with direct ADB access to your file system you can easily wreck you phone requiring a factory reset or even reinstallation of the OS from fastboot - please be careful on what you are doing
Credits: Thanks to osm0sis for Android kitchen and all great developers for the Oneplus devices, specifically mauronofrio for his TWRP efforts.
Description of method to modify recovery by yourself:
Prerequisites:
Android Image Kitchen (credit to osm0sis for providing this tool)
the original recovery image file (henceforth called "recovery.img"). You can extract this yourself from an update zip file by unpacking "payload.bin" and then use a tool like payload_dumper (credit to vm03 for providing this) to extract the recovery.img file
Now do the following:
unpack image with Image Kitchen --> this will create a "ramdisk" and a "Split_img" directory with the unpacked content within
navigate into the "ramdisk" folder and use a text editor (on windows preferably Notepad++) to edit the file "prop.default"
look for entry "ro.adb.secure" and change entry value from "1" to "0". Note this entry can occur multiple times (I noticed twice), change each --> this will prevent adb from asking for authorization (the recovery does not provide such a dialogue)
look for entry "ro.debuggable" and change this from "0" to "1" --> this actually enables adb
look for entry "ro.secure" and change this from "1" to "0" --> may be unnecessary but I wanted to avoid brick in case a modified recovery would result in such a behaviour
save textfile
repack the image with Android Image Kitchen and voila:
you have a new modified recovery image you can flash
Thanks for this...
On fastboot we have to flash the modified recovery img?
EDIT : Nevermind haven't read the whole OP
I have a noob question: this won't affect data or magisk right?
To remove a module , command should not be :
( rm -rf < directory> ) ?...

Thanks for your comment, but technically no
The - f flag is used to omit prompts before each removal, which may or may not be helpful - depending in how sure the user is on what he does
I chose the safer variety in my example, confident that users with more knowledge can always look at the "rm" man page to decide what command they want to use...
But again thanks, I do appreciate your help!

Correct, the recovery resides in a separate partition and flashing it doesn't do anything anywhere else.
In fact the recovery looks and behaves the same when booting into it, the change only becomes apparent by being able to use adb in recovery.
@s3axel can we use this recovery to escape bootloop due to install unsupported theme or any issue from substratum?
Or maybe just flashing stock boot IMG on fastboot is enough...

It should be possible as the recovery gives you full access to your file system and so, given you know what to remove/change, it should also be possible to recover from issues as you mentioned.
My problem: I have no idea where themes or substratum additions are installed directory-location wise, will need to research a bit. Or maybe someone else can chime in on this, then I could update OP with info on that as well...
Ok one more question..
Can we flash zips through the recovery?...
Via ADB sideload?.. maybe..

I don't know but I doubt it as to my knowledge ADB sideload is a special mode that needs to be activated e.g. in TWRP. So far I didn't have the need to use such a functionality and thus haven't tried it

Ok...
Because on pixel4 XL you can reboot to stock recovery and choose the the option ADB sideload...
And from there you can flash a custom ROM...etc..
Updated OP with 10.5.5 recovery..

That recovery looks like it's for BA. Does that recovery work on AA as well?

Is the OnePlus 8 pro system partition dynamic? Meaning it'll be an absolute nightmare to ever get TWRP like the OP 7T series? I really hope not, flashing through ADB for everything sucks.

Yep..
Definitely dynamic partitions...
Don't expecting a fully working twrp...
You can find a chinese twrp that boots and decrypt..
But sources are unknown...

do you have a link to that Chinese TWRP by chance? And how would I initially flash it, adb? Or Could I probably go through magisk manager?

What an incredibly helpful response. Sorry but if there's something that'll decrypt and allow me to backup and recover, of course I'm going to try and find it. And I suspect most other people here would too.

I don't know presently, usually I compare recoveries or I (or other users) add recoveries for other regions which they made by themselves. When recoveries are the same of course they can be used
RIght now I cannot download the 10.5.5 AA firmware (download aborts after some time), I'll add the recovery once this is working... EDIT: seems OP pulled the downloads, so no luck at the moment...
If there is a working twrp in China then perhaps it's worth making contact with them to see if either:
A) they can let you have it
B) they can help you fix this one?
It's presume the former would make the most sense, with permission I see no problem in obtaining it or linking it, certainly not taking about it. Makes no sense to just avoid an obvious assist whilst we all struggle without twrp.
