Is it possible to flash the n9600 firmware on an n960U1? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I'm hoping to get root on this phone and I remember reading somewhere that bootloader unlock was possible on the n9600 model. I have the n9600 firmware and the patched Odin on my computer and was wondering if anyone had tried this or if this phone would even boot after being flashed with this firmware. The n9600 from what I understand is a Snapdragon model and the only difference is the addition of a second Sim slot.

you do know the phone is almost 1 year old right?
if the n960u still dosent have root, its for a good reason.
if it were so simple as to flashing an other firmware, i can guarantee you the snapdragon dev thread would be flooded with roms and stuff instead of having 2 releases.( 1 recovery, 1 rom)
to me implied logic tells me that the above should have been self evident.
sorry if i pass as a realist.

[HOW TO] Flash U1 firmware to U device

First of all, thanks to Raymonf (I dont know his XDA Username) for making these Odin files. This new version of modded Odin allows for flashing custom and official tars AND also compressed binaries, which Samsung will be using in all Odin firmwares from Oreo on.
Oh and doing this doesnt wipe data if you do exactly what I wrote below.
1. Download your devices firmware from below
2. Enable USB debugging by going to settings > about phone > software info > click build number 7 times and enter your password
3. Open command prompt on your PC and type adb reboot bootloader
4. Open odin and select the AP, BL, CP, and HOME_CSC file in their corresponding locations
5. Start it
6. You are there!
To go back, do the exact same thing with the U firmware files!

Thank you for this. In all of the download mirrors for the s9+ the free download is unavailable. Is it asking to much to upload to a site that will offer free downloads?

The modded/patched Odin has the model-ID and SHA hash check disabled, therefore allowing you to flash an unbranded "U1" firmware onto a branded "U" phone and vice versa.
As of now this works on most US Qualcom (QC) models, but an increasing number of international Exynos (EX) models now include a new RMM security which prevents this kind of cross-flashing unless you first disable the RMM, by flashing an RMM-Disabler package through TWRP.

Probably gives better chance to root huh?
What I'm not clear on is: after I flashed my factory unlocked s9 to the VZW U firmware to see if I could get video calling to work (it didn't) then flashing back to what has been described as stock U1 ARBG firmware, in my about phone it still says VZW/VZW/XAA. Is this set by the SIM. Will this only change when I put a different carriers SIM card into the phone?
Question, before i dive in...
My UICC is locked to Sprint right now (damn 50 day limit) and I was wondering, if I flash this U1 rom, would I be able to edit the APN? Has anyone else done this?

That's correct, the unbranded "U1" firmware sets the carrier parameters based on every different carrier sim card inserted.
Don't worry about the VZW/VZW/XAA, for all intended purposes the phone acts as Verizon phone.
It's just a flag, but if you can't sleep over it then do this while rooted:
adb shell su -c echo "VZW" > /efs/imei/mps_code.dat
adb shell su -c echo "VZW" > /efs/imei/omcnw_code.dat

Flashing the unbranded "U1" firmware will neither unlock the network nor the APN settings if you keep using a Sprint sim.
On the other hand, if you unlock the network and insert an AT&T or Tmobile sim then you should be able to edit the APN, but then again you don't have to edit it because it gets set automatically based on the type of sim inserted.
Thanks a lot, quick question, i have an at&t "U" model, manage to install the U1 software (wanna get rid of all the at&t apps), everything its working just fine, but when an update comes to the U1 model, can i install it the regular way on odin, or do a need to follow this steps again??
here's the link i use from another post to dowload the system a bit faster: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=257047 greatings to the author.
Does doing this trip knox? I'm actually thinking of flashing Sprint firmware on my S9+ unlocked (XAA)

Wait do you have the same XXA unlocked model variant and tried flashing it? I'm also assuming that YMMV means "Your Model May Vary"..

Your Milage May Vary. I have a factory unlocked S9. When you flash firmware there are risk, don't hold me accountable if your Knox gets tripped some how. People hose their phones in flashing accidents then say someone gave them wrong info.

I wouldn't blame you lol, yes I know there's a risk. But you have stated earlier that you flashed a firmware and it didn't trip knox, so I'm wondering if you flashed a carrier firmware "U" on your SM-G960U1 device..

I'm glad to report that after flashing the Sprint firmware on my unlocked S9+ worked no issues and knox was not tripped. Now I've noticed that even though the Sprint splashscreen didn't show up at boot, while in setup the phone did detect the exact carrier I was on (Boost Mobile) and the phone showed the Boost Mobile splashscreen upon reboot and all the Boost Mobile apps as well as some bloatware loaded onto the phone as if it were a phone I purchased through them.
So if I flash my tmobile device to the u1 firmware can I then root my device and put twrp on it?
Is any root method available for the t-mobile version?

Firmware question

I am about to press the button on buying a 512Gb dual SIM N9600 from a reputable seller on ebay. This will be my first Snapdragon Samsung. I am trying to find out from the seller what firmware it has on it.
I think I will want to put firmware on it from my own region. Does it matter what the original firmware is if I want to install my local stock firmware via Odin?
I assume it is still the case that putting another region's stock firmware does not affect Knox or the security folder or warranty etc. Is that right?
Last question. The 512Gb dual SIM is not available in my region. Am I right that the firmware I can download for my region would be the same, whatever the storage size and whether it is single or dual SIM?
TIA
You can only flash 9600 firmware on a 9600. So make sure there is firmware for 9600s available for your region.
As long as you don't unlock the bootloader and you're flashing official Samsung factory firmware, you won't trip Knox. Knox is tripped by unlocking the bootloader and/or flashing unofficial firmware.
Yes, the firmware for a dual SIM is the same as single SIM.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, one main reason I am going for the 9600 is because the only firmware available for my region is for 9600. My region previously had the Exynos variant on Samsung phones but for some reason Samsung has switched my region to Snapdragon 9600 on the Note 9.
Am I right that the only reason to unlock the bootloader is for if/when I want to install custom recovery? I am pleased to see that it is possible to do so on the 9600.

That's correct. Unlocking the bootloader allows for root, custom recovery, and custom ROMs. It also permanently trips Knox.
Deleted due to a misunderstanding on my part.

Possible to change CSC to another region for unlockable bootloader on SM-N950U1?

I am wondering if it might be possible to change the CSC of an SM-N950U1 (possibly an SM-N950U) to the Hong Kong region. This might allow one to access OEM unlock in developer settings and enable an unlockable bootloader to install custom ROMs with.
If this were to be successful, would all of the LTE/CDMA/GSM bands that come with the phone's hardware still work?

1rst Nope! You will always have a LOCKED bootloader! No getting that unlocked!
2nd The OEM switch is ONLY for the Exynos models (SM-N950F/ N / F/DS models)!! (Now there was one in the combination firmware for SM-N950U/U1 BUT it doesn't do the same function as the one for the exynos models, so it won't do you any good!)
3rd the Hong Kong on SM-N9500 snapdragon you'll need a crom file to unlock I believe. And it's only for that model.
4th the firmware for SM-N9500 is NOT compatible with SM-N950U/U1/W. Samsung made enough changes to the firmware that it most likely brick your phone. (I think in the partitions of the phones that differ.)
5th search for the thread for "safestrap" it's in the note 8 rom section! It allows you to install root Samsung nougat rom (for now, pie might come later but who knows) on later bootloaders. Make sure you read and reread the first post and make sure you understand the information and instructions on how to do it. It isn't that easy as the OEM switch for exynos but it gives you rooted Samsung Nougat rom.
Also look in that thread if it is possible to switch csc to international CSC's.

Question about Samsung S10 FW.

I had my S10 unlocked to work with any carrier, but the default is Sprint, it keeps asking me to activate the phone which is driving me nuts. My SIM works but its not a sprint SIM. I was wondering if I could just flash a Verizon FW to it of the same build? I tried to root this phone but im having problems-That was my first intention. My phone is a S10 Model SM-G973U P.S. Is there anyway to root this model? I tried Magisk. Thanks, Rob

You can try to insert a Sprint sim card for a few minutes. Maybe that helps to prevent the activation message.
Bad news about rooting... bootloader is locked.

SM-G973u1 snapdragon root

Sorry to just drop a question, but I can't find the answer. Can the snapdragon S10 SM-G973u1 bootloader be unlocked? If not is there another way to root it?
Thank you
Chris

HelloChris333333, just when you post on a forum the courtesy of saying hello. Yes you can root just with the firmware of your model S10 SM-G973U1 US model so not compatible with EU firmware.

I'm not sure that's true, but I would love to find out I'm wrong.
In my research, the SD phones cannot be unlocked unless you are on (and remain on) an older BL version. The last unlockable BL version was 4, as I recall... if you're running updated firmware you are likely on BL 6. Even on 4, the process was not free and once you did it you could not update to a newer version of FW without losing the unlock.
For this reason, I gave up on getting root/BLunlock on my phone... and honestly, I have not missed it. This is also why I have not seen much development of FW for the SD phones anywhere.
Again, if I'm wrong, I'd love to learn how it's done!
Hello meric57
Can you share a link to the firmware I need? I just bought this phone and there is no OEM unlock option, it is a US phone. If I cannot root it I will have to sell it and get another phone.
Thanks
Chris
I guess another question would be where can I get a S10 with the Exynos chip?
Thanks
Chris
Using ADB I keep getting "waiting for device" and then I find I need to unlock the bootloader. This crap is an endless circle.
U4 can be unlocked before , I can unlock it , Special engineering documents need to be made
I'm V6 nothing available. I bought a G973F instead. G973u1 going on ebay.
Exactly, there is really no root/unlock for snapdragon phones unless you're on a very old BL (and you have to stay there so you can't update). IMO, that's not "can be unlocked" even with "special" steps, particularly since most phones today will have newer BLs (even a year ago, I couldn't find a BL4 phone)... but, yes, it's technically true to say it can be unlocked, but only in very limited cases.
@Chris33333 For this reason, I get that you may want to go to the Exynos instead... I'm curious, if you're in the US, how does that work with carriers? Does it? I've found most US carriers refuse to activate phones that don't match their list of "compatible" IMEIs... I imagine an F-series phone won't be on that list.
I'm in the US using Straight Talk with T-mobile. I've had a Galaxy S5 rooted for years. With straight talk I can use AT&T, T-mobile, or Verizon. But this international phone does not do Verizon.
And StraightTalk will activate the F-series phone without complaint or issues? If so, that's great to hear... because I know VZ and ATT typically won't...
I haven't put the SIM in it yet. Still trying to delete all the crap off the phone.
Lol
