How repair Dongles and Boxes work? - Android Auto General

Hi.
I am a new member and this is my first post. I am not sure if this is a right place for asking this question.
I know that there are dongles and boxes out there that do software repairs such as IMEI repair or FRP Remove.
It seems that these tools depends on chipsets. For example methods for removing FRP lock on MTK phones are different from Qualcomm phones. But there are always some software that connects through USB cable that sends instructions to the phone throught USB cables in general.
I wonder how I can get information about how these tools works, and what instructions are used to do these kind of works? Are these instructions CPU dependent?
Thank you!

[Q] Modem / COM port Access on G1

Is there a way to get a G1 into a diagnostic mode so the Qualcomm modem will show up over USB to a PC. I've tried various USB HTC drivers, including ones which include COM port over USB drivers (namely sync/diagnostic stuff for the Hero) but haven't had any luck getting anything but ADB composite device to show up.
I'm sure I'm getting the drivers to install, as the composite device changes its name depending on where the USB/ADB driver came.
Is there something I am missing here?
Thanks
I'm not steady handed enough to try your ribbon cable approach, though I think for a total investment of about $12 with shipping I can have a full homebrew cable. Much cheaper than the suggested component parts are by themselves.
I will update if the following work, I'm going off of supposition here:
This should be sufficient for getting the ExtUSB connector. Great part in my opinion is it already has wires going to a break out box.
www_amazon_com/HTC-Multifunction-Adapter-T-Mobile-Shadow/dp/B001QD3MQE/ref=lh_ni_t_
For the 3.3v CMOS compliant serial cable, I'm going to try this:
www_amazon_com/Data-Cable-Nokia-3585-CA-42/dp/B000BI4HQY/ref=pd_cp_cps_1
(replace _ in www_amazon_com with .)
Thanks for getting me started down the right road Xsite_01.
I know serial interfacing with most HTC phones isn't a top priority with ADB/ActiveSync (and JTAG for the hardcore), but someone should get Xsite's links added to the Wiki.

Diagnostic mode is entered from blue led mode using htc extusb to serial cable.
Qualcomm modem will show but with serial cable not regular usb. Here is the link on how to build one. If you need info on how to build it from home parts click here to view my tutorial, or contact me.
You acces serial port using serial cable and putty. Also you can acces the phone using PSAS/QMAT, Link 1, Link 2 for how to do it. But be wery careful accesing this, some command might damage the phone. I suggest that you read more about it before atempting anything.
You should not atempt this with regular usb cable becouse you can send the phone in some boot mode that can only be accessed using serial cable and you will be stuck(until you build serial cable).

I would like to communicate with the HTC Dream (G1) using the (qualcomm) diagnostic mode. By this, I mean the one that the QPST/QXDM softwares are using to talk to the baseband (radio). As I understand, it is possible to build the serial to USB cable (using the ExtUSB adapter needed for the G1) to do so. I would really appreciate if someone could confirm that he tested that for this purpose. I tried to build one by myself (using your instructables tutorial, great by the way, thanks Xsite_01 !) but did not managed to use it in diagnostic mode (neither in other mode actually, I may have broken some part of the chips so I would need to double check what I did and/or rebuy components to try again. The procedure is not difficult by itself, it is just the soldering pins that are really small...).
What I tried is to go to fastboot mode (default bootloader mode for the G1), issue the "fastboot oem rtask c" command (using the HTC standard USB cable). The command never returns so I disconnected it and plugged the serial cable (the one I made) but I did not see any diagnostic mode.
To compare, I managed to use the diagnostic mode on the HTC Desire Z using the following procedure:
* issue the "fastboot oem rtask c". The command returns an error but it is ok, it is because it gave the handling of the USB content to AT interpreter of the baseband
* issue the AT$QCDMG command to the AT interpreter of the baseband. You now get the diagnostic mode.
If someone has some hints, don't hesitate. I will come back as soon as it is working...

[Q] Want to purchase a new usb data cable for SGS but can't find one.

I want to purchase a new usb data cable for SGS but don't know how to identify the original one(never used one).
Purpose:
Want to root my SGS.
And this thread suggests to use the "original" cable.
The research I have done so far:
Searched the web but was not able to figure out how to identify the one that comes with SGS.
All I can find is compatible ones whose MPN/PID I've provided below.
Had gone to the Samsung service centre and placed an order for the cable. Had called them up but it's still unavailable.
So I asked them for some sort of identification(MPN) of cable so I could order it online. They gave me this: GH39-01352A.
Some Samsung stores that I visited showed me two cables which had the following MPN/PID on them:
1] APCBU10BBE
2] ECB-DU4AWE
-----------------------------------
Whenever it comes to data transfer I use Moto Defy's cable to connect SGS and it works flawlessly.
It's rooting I'm skeptical about.
I tried using Framaroot but it failed.
Help me with the link to the usb cable in case I am not looking at the right place.
Also what are my options assuming the service centre doesn't get the cable?

The cable that came with my SGS has the following ID:
APCBU10BBE
I think this cable should work.
Even if you can't find the original cable I don't see why you should have a problem flashing with a different cable.
I managed to flash my device many times using a Nokia cable (and some other cables too).

Is it truly bad to use third-party USB cables?

Sony generally advises against using third-party USB cables with Sony handsets, because data might become corrupted and whatnot. So I'd like to gather some opinions on this, since I'm finding it hard to believe that using a (good quality) third-party USB cable would cause any harm. Is there anything special about Sony's USB cables? It's not like they are of the best quality either.

It's 100% bull****! (excuse my French)
And also your data may become corrupted, that chance is very VERY small and even if it happens, what are the chances that it's something super duper important.
They are just saying that you should buy their product.
Sony wanted to say that they guarantee a data transfer without interruption only with their cables. That do not exclude a same result with an another cable. If you trust in the quality of a third-party cable you are free to use it. Since the cables market it so large and the quality various so much their advise is justified.
Follow-on question regarding cables to be used during ROM upgrades (etc), if you please... apologies if this is deemed highjacking, but so far I've only found 2 threads specifically about USB cables...
Here's the deal: I've seen numerous cautions about being sure to use the cell manufacturer's cable when doing custom software ops of any kind (flashing ROMs, whatever).
The thing is, I have no idea if I still have the original USB cables for any of my 3 phones (soon to be 4). I presently use a Rocketfish cable (with USB 2.0 symbol) for all phone-to-PC and most charging.
So this is my question: If I can plug a phone into my PC, browse what appears to be everything in its partitions, plus write or delete folders and files as I please... and also run bootloader from PC and get the phone to respond as predicted...
Is that enough to think the cable is sufficient to use for software ops?
degraaff, thanks for this thread and again apologies if I'm shifting the subject too much.
I use 3rd party usb cables for both data transfer and FTF flashing. They are cheap generic ones ordered from amazon or eBay. Have had no problems and have connected and flashed many Sony phones (T, L, ZL, Z1C, Z3C) with them.
Sometimes third party cables make weird stuff happen like ghost touches and the like while charging. But i don't think that happens anymore.

Last year I lost a Galaxy S3 while trying to root it with a high quality third party usb cable. I had the original cable as well, but I thought since the third party cable is high quality too, it doesn't matter. Somehow the failed rooting attempt burnt the GSM chip. Needed to replace the whole motherboard.
With several attempts, rooting the S3 failed BUT with the original cable it worked on the first try.
I wasn't aware of what you wrote about the importance of using original OEM cables for phones but now it all makes sense to me...Be careful! Rather use original cable!

Make sure that:
1. You are using a USB-C cable compatible with data. I have had problems with some cables with my OnePlus Devices.
2. That in your notification tray you change USB for Charging to USB for Data Transfer

The original poster said they tried several cables. But I agree, they should make sure the cables support data transfer. Some cables (particularly cheap, 3rd party) only support charging, and will not transfer data. And therefore the MTP data transfer option never comes up. I've had this happen with some cables, myself.
Otherwise, if different cables and PCs used, with correct drivers; then I tend to assume the USB port on the phone is damaged, or some other hardware failure.
I apologize and I rectify myself. The fast loading is not working, it is just normal load and I had not realized why I use several chargers, but with the original one plus not fast charge

Now I suspect that it may have been damaged by using several chargers in the car etc ...
But the only thing that occurred to me that could get us out of doubt would be an update via OTA

Updates via OTA will work but if the hardware problem does not know another update if it does, I'm skeptical about it.
It may be that the only solution is just replacing the motherboard
I do have the same problems with 2 different 3T (one with LineageOS 14.1, one with OyxgenOS 5.0.8).
Tried from Windows 10 using latest drivers from Oneplus. Tried form LinuxMing 19.
Using original red OPO USB-C cable...
MTP is enabled. I tried really everything.
Any idea is welcome! Tnx!

Please don't copy and paste the same question in multiple threads. https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...o-storage-via-mtp-mode-windows-t3560060/page3
You posted here, and on the other thread that it is the "same problem"; but these 2 threads describe different issues. This thread described not being able to read the phone at all from PC. The other one describe being able to read, but not write. Which is it?
Some general posting tips, to allow you to get the proper help you request:
- Best not to say "same problem" but rather, describe your issue in detail. I've seen folks post "same problem" many many times (maybe hundreds) on these forums over the years. I can honestly say, that of those time, zero of the problems actually ended up being identical symptoms and solutions. Describe your issue, step by step, in as much detail as possible, with specific outcomes, error messages, etc.
- Don't post the same question in multiple threads. In addition to the issues pointed out above; cross posting just leads to confusion. If folks start helping you in the different threads, you are going to be bouncing back and forth and just getting confused. It also confuses those trying to help you; as you will inevitably start updating one thread, but not the other. Easier to keep the discussion to one relevant thread.
- I don't know what it means when you say "I really tried everything". You did not try everything, otherwise the problem would be solved. You only mentioned trying one cable. That isn't much. If there are other things you tried, you need to list those separately, and specifically. Otherwise we can only guess what you tried or didn't try. Probably wasting everyone's time as we suggest things that you may have already tried. Did you try other cables? Try other USB ports? Will the phone connect fastboot or adb?
Common problem on two different devices suggest a problem with the cable. Are you trying on 2 different PCs? Or dual booting? It's not clear (you mention Linux and W10).

Help, Mi A2 USB problem!

Hi, phone works OK, it also charges BUT doesn't connect to any PC (windows detects device with description error?), usb OTG not working either, only headphones using type c adapter. Please help, I'm using stock pie with February update, unrooted, blocked bootloader and with usb debugging enabled.
@egantz09
Disable USB Debugging.
Install this driver (and please follow the instructions):

Hi, Thanks for the guide, but I can't pass from step 6 in which I need to install the Mi Drivers but no PC recognizes de phone, not even in fastboot mode, see screenshot. Any other ideas? I can still charge it and listen audio trough the usb port. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I've hard reset the phone and the problem still persist.

Thanks for the update.
Go into Step 7, with the device connected, and install the drivers manually.
So, in this scenario, you'll right click on the device and browse to the location where you downloaded the drivers.
I need to know what happens if you try and install them manually.

Hi, I can't actually do step 7 because it doesn't recognizes the phone as an Android device like in the guide, but as an:
Unknown USB Device (Error Device Descriptor Request Failed) see attached screenshot.
Even when I select this Unknown USB Device and tried to update de driver manually, the installation fails. (see attached screenshot) .
I've changed cables and tried on different ports of different PCs. Same result. Also by entering Developer Options and accessing the USB settings won't work, there are all greyed out.

Thank you for your efforts and feedback.
Based on the details, I would strongly suggest you initiate a return. You've taken all the appropriate steps, and then some, to address the problem but it's obvious the issue exists with the device hardware.
I am happy to provide further instructions but what concerns me is the fact you've tried multiple PCs and multiple cables.

If your phone was in warranty you should have returned it, changing the USB port was your final option. Now you should take it to a service center. Good luck,

I waited 3 months for my USB port replacement and it did the same thing, now I'm waiting for the flex connector, if that doesn't work either, then its a problem with the motherboard.
I ended up replacing the entire phone and a few months later this phone now has the same issue.. this is horrible. Especially with no USA support from Xiaomi. Its a "deal with it" situation.
But i believe the use of crappy chargers, debris getting into port, maybe Qualcomm quick charge modules design flaw could be sending unsafe currents or lacking proper temp regulation when charging,, is damaging something on the main board. I checked every possible software related possibility and tried every fix with no luck.
What i did notice when it happened this time, chargers were not staying connected, they would pop out due to debris in the charging port, also i noticed my phone got pretty hot using a Qualcomm QC enabled charger one night. Nothing else was suspected of generating heat, all apps closed, screen had been off.
I everyone... Where i can buy an usb port?? My A2 is not charging, trying at least 4 different cables and chargers,
Tks
