I'm looking to buy a V405QA7 (USA factory unlocked) on eBay. I found a listing where the seller claims it's new, but open box. The box pictured doesn't look like those I see on Swappa and Youtube unboxings. This box has a connected flap lid, instead of removable separate piece. Does this look legit to you? See that attached photos.

It looks very fake to me. I don’t trust eBay.

Send a question to the seller and see what you get. I did that with a different seller advertising a supposedly unlocked 405QA7 version, and the reply was that he had various models, but they were all unlocked. My guess is that this is a Sprint or AT&T model (V405UA) which has been unlocked. In fact, if you look at the model number on the phone back. it looks like there's a UA at the end (but it's really hard to see, so I could be wrong).
I've been looking for a great deal on an unlocked or Tmobile version to replace my V20, but haven't found it yet.
I messaged the seller to ask why the box looks different. He/she responded:
The box is different as it is a generic box as we purchase the item in bulk. The item will be new as listed and will be as described.

I see a ton of unlocked Sprint V40s on eBay from bulk sellers. I wonder why Sprint models. There's also many unlocked AT&T models too. Too bad the Sprint version can't be flashed with the factory unlocked firmware. That's possible for the V30.
I had a Sprint V20, when I had Sprint service. Even though Sprint assured me it was unlocked (on numerous occasions), I could never get it to work on another network. I don't trust Sprint models to work on anything but Sprint (and even then, with issues).

I am looking for a bit smaller phone than my G2 and the Z3 Compact looks like the one I will go with. I see it isnt even out in the US yet, and I am on ATT. I will be buying the phone off contract though so which model should I get? I want to go with one that supports the LTE bands ATT uses, but also will have a lot of development for it. Also I need to be able to root it, and preferably unlock it, so that means any sort of ATT official model is probably out of the question, if they even get any model. Seems like only TMobile gets the Xperia phones in the US all the time.
You want the D5803. Buying it from either Clove or Handtec will get you the best price.

Just remember, like several of the threads here say, make sure the AT&T store you go to for your nanosim does not use the IMEI from the Z3C. Tell them to use the IMEI from your G2 instead.
I'm having a difficult time finding a new-in-box unlocked XT1103 phone. I've had to send back 2 from Amazon.com because it stated it was new, but clearly it is not.
I'm trying to find the US version so that I can use Project Fi with it...
It seems trying to get a Nexus 6 at this point is a 'buyer beware' experience, as I can't seem to find an honest seller that has a new, unlocked phone or clearly states in their description what it is (ex... description shows XT1103, but picture of box shows XT1100)
Any suggestions? Thanks!
There are ones on eBay that claim to be new for $185 and "sealed box" for $199. I actually got mine on eBay a year ago and it was sealed box and have had no issues.

Thanks... do you have a link to the one you are seeing? I see some as well, but they are XT1100.
Then there are those that state XT1103 in the product title, but then claim in the description that they do NOT work on CDMA carriers (which is not correct in my understanding that XT1103 DOES work with ALL U.S. based cell service carriers).
@exiphone: Go to Swappa, XDA Developers' official marketplace. Nexus 6 devices there won't be new in box but the sellers there are trustworthy. They have to be in order to sell on Swappa, as Swappa's sale requirements are rather strict compared to the caveat emptor environment of Ebay.
P. S. Your understanding is correct. The XT1103 will work on all carriers. However Sprint is extremely reluctant to add phones to its network that were not bought through them.
I don't know about "new" but I got one that was "like new". I paid $180 for a 64GB Nexus 6. Also if you're a Costco member they had some Verizon Branded 32GB Nexus 6s that were brand new online. I thought they were too expensive (can't remember how much) but they were new.

What exactly does 'Verizon' branded mean? Does the back case just have their logo and startup splash screen instead of AT&T logo? or is there some Verizon bloatware that comes on it?
AT&T were the only carrier to brand their Nexus 6 devices on the back. Any bloatware from the carrier is added during device setup if a carrier SIm is inserted and is easily uninstalled.

Good for you. But tell that to the others who tried and had to jump through hoops to get Sprint to do their job. Keep in mind, "reluctant" does not mean "willing".
P. S. I don't have Sprint as their service is crap. You couldn't pay me to use them either, unless we were back in the late 1990s.
Is there anything I should know? Anyone have any thoughts? I am coming from the s5.
It would be nice to have a phone on verizon with official lineage os support, but there are limited options.
My questions before I purchase.
Is there xposed support for whatever android version is current on this phone?
What kind of nonsense do I need to go through to get the unlocked amazon version working on verizon?
What kind of roms are favored on this phone?
After some research, I am learning that the amazon version can't be bootloader unlocked, but the one direct from moto can be. Is this correct?
Amazon version can't be rooted or bootloader unlocked.

Cool, is there a retailer with a good return policy I can buy it from? I am sure it would be a pain to return it to motorola if I buy from them and don't like it.

not sure about that buddy. Best buy sells it, Moto on ebay sells it, Newegg sells it.

Most good sellers allow returns within a certain time period (and as long as you don't damage it). Check the listing description or message the seller. I got mine from here last year mint condition about $100 below Motorola retail.
Get the Android One version via Project Fi
I also came from a S5 and am thoroughly enjoying this phone. No restrictions on unlocking the bootloader (it is a setting you can enable/disable). Android One version is very bare bones. Battery life is great so I don't really miss the replaceable battery.
Project Fi is 1/2 the price that AT&T was (not including the rebates that had my bill at $40 for a few months) and it will get even cheaper when our two phones are paid off. Bonus is that you can block callers from leaving voicemails OR texting you via Project Fi's blocked caller list - this is something that I don't think AT&T or Verizon do.
I was looking for unlocked phone on craigslist and I found this unlocked phone listed for $800. However, the seller immediately agreed for $650 without much negotiation. I checked the phone, everything looks original, IMEI checks out, came with box and all the accessories. Its not a Chinese close. But seller was not able to provide the receipt. He claimed he bought unlocked directly from Samsung but he couldn't even show the email.
It didn't click me back then but now that I look back, everything looked shady. Like he immediately dropped the price and sold me immediately etc. I did get photo of his drivers license and car license plate and he was happy to provide that.
Am I at risk of getting my phone blacklisted later on if this is stolen? I know if the phone is from Verizon or AT&T, they blacklist the stolen phone with IMEI in their data base. But how about the factory unlocked phone? Is there any way for me to find out if this phone is stolen?
1. Check model# on the box, is it SM-N960U or SM-N960U1?
If the phone's model say n960u1 but on the box model is n960u then he flashed unlocked firmware on a carrier model.
2. Check the IMEI on swappa it will tell you if you have factory unlocked phone(SM-N960U1) or a carrier model(SM-N960U), based on your imei. https://swappa.com/esn
I have a factory unlocked n960u1 and t-mobile doesn't know what phone I'm using because they don't have my phone's imei in their database. So if the phone is factory unlocked and report it stolen to his carrier, I don't think they can do anything because it's not carrier's phone. But if it's one of carrie's phone and report it lost or stolen then the imei will get blacklisted. So just check the imei find out exactly if it's n960u or n960u1.
Hope that helps.

Inquiring minds gotz tuh no!
This thread is so old that the OP is no longer a noob!
I gave up on rooting a GD1YQ (close to that), the US version of the Pixel 5. I can get an International Pixel 5 (GTT9Q). There are two "gotchas"
1) Is this bootloader unlockable? I tried to get the seller to try the "check OEM Unlock" test. The seller won't touch creating Developer Mode. Feh.
2) The seller says the phone is "Google account locked". I get how an account can be locked, and unlocked. As best I can figure, do a data reset, and use a different, working Google account when the question shows up in the setup process.
Am I clueless about 1), 2), or all of the above?
Bump
Still looking for an answer on this one.
Anybody? Please?
Tell the seller thanks but no thanks. Look elsewhere. They won't look at dev options means it is not bl unlockable. Model number means nothing at this point. Screenie of the OEM switch is needed.
That phone's gone. Still, I wonder if these rascals, not being VZW, etc. phones, have unlocked BL's.

No one should sell a phone with an unlocked bootloader. Perhaps you mean unlockable BL? As I stated, the only way to tell is by looking at the dev options OEM switch. It should look like this:
This time around, the seller woke up Developer options and... fail. Was a great price, too. Oh well.
I missed out on a pair of phones that explicitly said their bootloaders were unlocked. Someone on eBay listed them, and was clear this was the BL's not just unlocking carriers.
Back to the original question - trying to sort out if the International version is worth chasing down.
The specs I've seen say the only difference between the US and International phones are no support for mmWave in the International phone. Since I'm not crazed about getting 5G (travel too often where any "G" is a surprise), losing mmWave is no big thing.

Why not pick up a 4a 5G new from Google? They are under $500 and a great phone. My friend has one and it's awesome. No chasing down anything or playing games with clowns on resales.
The object of the exercise is to get a 5, not just 5G.

Fair enough, I'd probably do the same thing.. maybe a 5a? Heard they might be coming soon.
And some day a 6, a 7, an 8...
A 5 will do me nicely.
I should add I spend some time in Germany, so an International version is OK. Buy one in Germany? With 19% value added tax? Nein danke.
Well good luck then. If you don't find one by the time the 6 ships, I might know of one in near mint condition. ;-)
I'll keep it in mind...
