Pokémon Go / Wizards Unite / Niantic devices, bootloader - Google Pixel 3a Themes, Apps, and Mods

I just bought a Pixel 3a from swappa.com. One of the things that I've noticed is that when I run any Niantic games, it tells me my device or OS is incompatible with this version. I suspect this may be because the bootloader is unlocked? However, the phone is NOT rooted.
Any ideas on what my options would be? Had a chat with Google and they're supposed to be emailing me once their experts find a solution, but not crossing my fingers on that. I already tried locking the bootloader with fastboot and had a freakout (was able to unlock it again and factory reset, LOL . . . )

I'm unlocked, rooted (stock ROM and kernel), and spoofing gps and I'm still able to play Pokemon Go.
I'd recommend flashing the latest stock factory image to clear out anything the old user may have left behind.
If that doesn't work I'd root using Magisk, then hide Magisk and applicable apps.

Ok, cool, I'll try that! Thanks for the reply!

Wiped and rooted phone, installed stock rom from Google, and it worked! Pokémon Go AND Wizards United working. Thanks so much!

Im on Stock Rooted and Ex Kernel all you have to do is go to magisk use Mgaisk Hide the games and go into settings then HIDE Magisk or i think its repackage hide something aroudn that and yeah it works oh also you have to turn off debugging in dev options.

If you decide to use the GPS spoof, I highly recommend fakegps route, it gives you a thumb stick so you can walk around while being a couch potato. It's 4 bucks.
Just use the Magisk module "systemize" to make it a priv-app, restart your phone, uninstall the app from the app store, enable expert mode in the GPS app, then disable fused locations the GPS app.

Activate Android Pay on a rooted phone

I'm on M3 rooted with Despair kernel.
Got Android pay update and tried to activate it by adding a credit card information. It bailed out saying that my phone can't be trusted, I figured out that's because of root.
I tried to unroot in SuperSu. First by disabling Enable Superuser root button, second by Full unroot. Both methods didn't work, Android pay still couldn't be activated.
I then tried to format and flash boot, system, recovery MPA44I images. I started to get a RED message your phone can't be trusted on boot. Android pay still couldn't be activated. NOTE: I didn't erase data partition.
I don't want to do a full factory reset.
What are my options now ?

Go to the Android Pay app info, and uninstall updates. This will roll it back into Google Wallet. You should also go and uninstall the new wallet app if you have it so as to avoid confusion.
After that, I had to find an APK site that could update my wallet app back up to Version 9.0. I've since disabled auto-updates to the Google Wallet app until I see some signs of support for root.

Have you actually been able to make a purchase? I got everything setup and activated but received an error message when I tried to use it. I then disabled root and rebooted to try the payment again. Did not get the error message this time but the transaction did not complete.
I made a payment this morning using Pay without a problem.

Android Pay Issue with Root

Hey Guys,
I have an original (2013) Moto X 1060 (Verizon) that I rooted using this method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/moto-x-root-pogress-60-t3071602 It's been working great with no problems until today when my phone decided to update my google wallet app to the new android pay. Whenever I try to add a card to android pay I'm getting the error "Android Pay Cannot be used...... Google is unable to verify that your device or the software running on it is android compatible."
Googling has led me t believe that this is an error related to the app detecting root. I tried both of these methods, but neither has worked. http://bit.ly/1LnwzAZ http://bit.ly/1LnwEog . I've tried each separately with rebooting in between as well as trying them together all to no avail.
Other than following the guide above the only root-related things I have modified on the phone are the removal of some verizon apps via titanium backup and adding the following xposed module: "NoSafeVolumeWarning".
One thing that I noted was when I uncheck "Enable Superuser" inside of SuperSu 2.46 it displays a message saying "Uninstall Failed !" It still displays the "Superuser is disabled and hidden" underneath the box and if i enable it again and disable it it does not pop up with the uninstall failed message. Does this have something to do with write protection?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Adam

Having the exact same issue. Just upgraded to 5.1 today, xposed Rootcloak as well as No Device Check installed. Also tried Disable SU. Still get the same issue.
Same. I tried uninstalling SU, Hide My Root, and Rootcloak...nothing has worked. Found out today that the app updated when I went to buy something at Walgreen's. How ****ing embarrassing is that?
So I have not yet found a solution to this and am still hoping someone has one. In the mean time, you can install this app http://www.apk4fun.com/share/7185/ (doesn't need to be from this site, it's just an old version of google wallet, and the one I used), go into settings>apps>google play services>manage data clear all data, and reboot. I just tried it at cub foods and it worked fine, but of course you do have to go into the app first, and I had to disconnect it from the app store with titanium backup so it wouldn't update to android pay again.
Was able to get Amex card working after uninstalling Xposed. However, I think I'm going to pass on Android Pay until they allow pin codes on the app, not the phone.
Same problem, few apps frozen with TiBu and xposed installed. Any other work around? s

check to see if your phone allows pin codes to be deactivated at times. I have mine set to not be used at home work and if I am carrying the phone. It is quite useful feature in settings Lockscreen but I am on COS 12.1 OnePlus basically CM
I haven't tried it yet, but I think they only way we'll get this working on root is to install it on stock unrooted, back it up with TiB or Helium, root and then reinstall/restore.
Lots of fail here as well. All the tricks you all listed + some others. It seems there is a lack of consistency for those that resolved. Some just say disabling root, uninstall busybox, uninstall xposed, rootcloak, device checker for play services, etc.
Nothing yet has worked for me. Luckily I backed up Wallet just before taking the update, so I may go back until the community has a solution.

I'm in the same boat. Couldn't get AP to work. Just loaded up the previous version of Wallet. Now have two wallet apps, but whatever. Both appear to be working.
Has anyone tried to get Android Pay working by re-locking the bootloader and temp unrooting on a Nexus device (say, a tablet), then getting AP up and running, and then checking to see if it was usable on your other device(s)??....I was curious if Android Pay would work on ALL of your devices once it was set up properly. Working with lock, unlocking, rooting, etc. is much easier on a Nexus than it would be to work on a Moto, or similar.
Does this make any sense?

magisk fortnite thread

Hello everyone. I have created this thread (hopefully in the right place) to start a discussion on methods/developing methods to get fortnite to work on a rooted device, with magisk installed. Im currently running Dr. Ketan's rom (android pie) on a samsung galaxy note 9 and for obvious reasons (the fortnite galaxy skin) would like to play a few games and have it work without any hiccups. Im not looking to hack the game or any nonsense like that, so if anyone has a currently functioning method that doesnt require me to reflash stock firmware (as i dont have a pc and had to use a friends to unlock bootloader and such) and play on the unrooted device then re-root and install custom rom

Uhh. Its already working. Atleast for me. You just need to hide magisk manager , hide Fortnite app and installer on magisk hide tab, disable usb debugging, and make sure there isn't magisk named folder or files inside your internal storage. That should do it. I'm on the note 8 and it works just fine

I'm on a rooted OnePlus 7 Pro and mine just stopped working yesterday. Was fine for about an hour after the Star Wars event then logged on around 10pm and I get kicked out as soon as I exited the bus. Keeps happening over and over again. No other software changes so I'm guessing there needs to be some update to Magisk to get it working again.

Stock OnePlus 7 pro with magisk and TWRP. Epic launcher and Fortnite both hidden in magisk hide. USB debugging turned off. No modules installed. Just using it for root. Worked fine until last night. Gpay and all other safety net apps work fine. It's just Fortnite. Logged in on a friend's Xbox and a really laggy ipad and could play on both so it's not my account - it's definitely the rooted phone and magisk no longer hides itself from Fortnite.
I'm really irritated with the whole thing because I was so close to finishing the season pass and now I can't play at all.
Here's another fix. These last few updates they have added more things to the blacklist. So remember that they basically scans the internal sdcard etc for MagiskManager folder right? Well now they scan TWRP folder too!! So try renaming it to something else without TWRP in it. And see if it works!. Just tried mine and still working just fine!

With Tasker or Automate, you can set a trigger to automatically rename folder on start of Fortnite and rename back, after the game is closed.

Kernal or ROM that hides KNOX Trip?

Hello,
I rooted and installed a custom ROM on my Note 9 a couple of months ago and yesterday I was getting annoyed not being able to use apps like Android Pay, Samsung Pay and Banking apps, So I decided to use Odin to flash the stock ROM back and set OEM Unlock to OFF. To my Horror, I found out the hard way about what a KNOX Trip was. I have no idea how I missed all the warnings on every ROM post about tripping it and not being able to change it back. I can now use my Banking apps, Android Pay and play Fortnite however, Because of the Knox being tripped I can no longer use Samsung Health and Samsung Pay
My Question is is there a way to just install a custom kernel or ROM that tricks apps like Samsung Pay and Samsung Health into working again without installing root and having modifications hidden so I can use my Banking apps and play games??
Any Help is very much appreciated!
After a bit more searching the forums and Google I now understand that no matter what I do I can't get Samsung pay to work which is fine. However any help on the rest is still appreciated! ?

for google pay, some actualy revert to an older version. just search the forums. for me magisk hide works great with my banking app. and for games, im not much of a gamer so i realy dknt know. but again you should try with dr. ketan rom just in case it works. just choose to flash kernel and magisk during setup.( do a clean install so factory wipe in twrp before flashing his rom)
Well i decided to just use Stock Rom and lock the bootloader so at least most of my apps then work. I installed a modified apk of Samsung Health but it doesn't contain the heart rate monitor but I suppose that's fine and I just have to accept that Samsung Pay will never work again
Where can i get the old version of Google pay which works with unlocked bootloader?

Recently Magisk has changed its way of distribution so there's only an apk now. But if you rename the Magisk apk into a zip, you can then flash it from TWRP (which you can access by flashing arter97's kernel).

Nowadays if you're to root the most ideal approach would be Magisk, which allows you to modify the system without directly touching the system partition, as well as hiding its presence from certain sensitive apps so Safety Net can still pass.

If you're saying it's past prime... in some aspects, yes, thanks to the fact that you can't have both Xposed and Safety Net passing at the same time.
Still, if you're interested, you may consider looking for EdXposed or LSposed. I haven't tested it myself as I don't really have a use case at the moment, but these might be useful.

You mostly need to just unlock bootloader following official instructions. After that you can proceed to flash kernels and GSIs through fastboot.
PS: I think this thread should best be posted in the Q&A forum...
EDIT: Just noticed your other post. If that was your real question... well, you were in the stock recovery and not the bootloader so fastboot commands obviously won't work there.
To enter bootloader, power it off, hold VOL- and POWER buttons until you see something like "Restart Bootloader", then you should be able to use fastboot.
Thank you, for all of your information!
It helped me by heaps!
The biggest problem I was having, was thinking the phone was in fastboot when it wasn't.
When I figured that out, the phone was quickly up n running on Phh-Treble with GApps Gsi.
Magisk Manager vs apk uses were confusing. It's Modules I can more easily blindly understand due to knowing XPosed.
Magisk went in smoothly & successfully via the change extension fastboot method which you explained.
But it appears the same as before inside the OS It's there but not really in type of thing.
Everything but the f2fs file and Magisk did complain.
I have no idea what kernel actually made it in now.
Safetynet! Hahaha! Is a new thing for me.
My phone is PlayStore bonafide uncertified also now.
PlayStore, I tried some other gapps nothing really changes, it just reupdates back to where it was, if it does, anyways(I think).
I tried registering device too. Failed that!
Being Uncertified = no netflix, no bank apps(deal breakers to me). GPhotos 1/2-ish working. Gvoice, Gmail working great! Razer Themes.apk + Pandora disappeared. I miss Razer Themes Lockscreens alot! Razer gives only a play link.
I installed older Netflix & Bank app. Both working.
Play ignores netflix but updated Bank. The same Bank app did stop working on a deemed outdated device in the past. It's not Chase but close.
I did try hiding things from the launcher via an other installed launcher.
An old Selinux(sp?) showed set to permissive. I changed to enforced, rebooted and it appeared to stick.
I installed Greenify(old) and stopped everything then did my monthly banking business, paid, xferred, etc. All transactions were confirmed. Boot still unlocked.
Soon afterwards, I installed Aptoide which informed me of root.
The Gsi's package Installer, won't install anything from within Es(I'm a diehard Es file manager user). The built-in file manager must be used to call the installer. The built-in file manager also crashes when searching.
A buggy installer I can deal with. Banking without it's app, I can not.
A halfbaked PlayStore is doable but not ideal.
The gsi itself on a RP2 is beautiful. The darks darker. The flashlight toggle works now! The fingerprint sensor never worked, still doesn't. 120fps, few games bake that capablity in. I haven't tested yet. No sound in Wyze app.
I recommend having your fav most used .apks dled before leaping onto it.
First boot was loud! Be prepared!
Then nothing.
2 days later, I noticed all alarms & notifications were set to silent sound.wav.
Idk, where to go from here. Stick to where it is now & wait for fixes. Go back. Or to go patch crazy if I can manage to get Magisk in.
I'm happy enough where it is now and it feels pretty secure. Will relocking the bootloader wipe it? The adult in me thinks.
But! I love tweaking...zzz
Relocking undoes it

Uh... you can try GSIs on this phone after unlocking bootloader. Most of the phone's functionality work with GSIs at the moment.

I have one of the faulty charging ports so cannot do anything with USB. I do have my bootloader unlocked so is there any way to get the gsi's, twrp and root onto the phone via SD card? Any help is appreciated.
