Ever since I bought my 9PV, I've struggled with it's lousy fingerprint scanner. Compared to my previous Nokia 7 Plus and 8.1, the scanner is from an entirely different universe.
When testing the scanner, it usually performs reasonably well (provided that you press down your finger somewhat hard), but that's only if you lock the phone using the power button and then immediately wake it up again and then use the FP scanner.
If the phone is left alone for a while, that's when the problems begin. The scanner doesn't seem to wake up from sleep at all. The green scanning light doesn't come on. If you move your finger over the scanning area a bit, it might wake up (and then of course do a misread because of the finger moving). It got to the point I learned a new way of using the FP scanner: I place my finger about 5 millimeters "too high" and then slide it down to the right position. This way I got it to wake up somewhat better, but far from perfect.
So my problems were mostly because the scanner doesn't wake up at all. When it does wake up (the green scanning light comes on), it usually works fairly well.
I reported my findings to HMD support and got the following suggestion:
I would like to suggest the following steps in attempt to fix your issue. Follow the path below:
• Set a screen lock from Settings -> Security & Location -> Screen lock.
• Open Settings -> Security & Location -> Trust agents -> Smart lock ->Toggle off Smart Lock to disable.
• Restart the device.
• Open Settings -> Security & Location -> Trust agents -> Smart lock -> Toggle on Smart Lock to enable.
• Open Settings -> Security & Location -> Smart lock -> Set up a Smart lock.
• Restart the device & test the fingerprint.
Also I would like to suggest adding the same fingerprint from the finger few times.

So it seems Google's Smart Lock agent somehow interferes with the FP scanner, causing it to not wake up. I don't know why and how. I did as the support suggested and it indeed seems to wake up better than before. Then I disabled Smart lock altogether (in the Trust agents menu) and that seemed to make it even better. The green scanning light comes on every time.
Those of you with similar problems might want to try this method, and please report back. Give it at least a few hours, or perhaps days, to get a reliable result and then report back. The phone must be sleeping, so it has to be lying idle for some time in between every try.

I'm having an odd problem with Lollipop's smart lock feature that I can;t seem to find much about elsewhere on the internet so I wonderin if it might be related to a Sony app.
I set up the phone's security and it works fine. Then I set up a smart lock trusted place/device (same scenario happens with both). Put the phone to sleep and wake up and the smart lock seems to work -- I have to only swipe up to get to the homescreen (no password required). But from then on the security is basically disabled altogether. The next time I wake the phone I no longer have to swipe up the lockscreen. If I leave the trusted place/device the phone also just goes straight to the homescreen. When I return to the trusted place/device, same thing.
So essentially the smart lock feature is disabling security altogether on the first "smart" unlock. The only way to get security working again is to go back and set it up all over again (enter new pattern/pin). Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
Just picked up the note 5 a couple days ago. the fingerprint scanner works great, but I have the fingerprint option to unlock the phone selected and still most of the time all it wants me to do is swipe to unlock, occasionally asking to use the fingerprint. Is this normal? I'm under the assumption that it should require a fingerprint everytime you unlock.
It always asks for fingerprint for me, unless I'm doing the quick camera. It will say swipe home key, its asking you to clean off the button with your finger
I believe the combination of "screen timeout" and "lock timeout" settings will take care of this. However, I used to be able to just use fingerprint to unlock, and now (after last update maybe) I have to sometimes use swipe AND fingerprint which is annoying, and I can't figure out the combination of settings to adjust this.

Are you using any form of smart unlock, via location or bluetooth connections?

I am using SmartLock (both locations and bluetooth), and from running into another forum thread, I believe I'm also treating the Padlock icon wrong, where I was dragging it thinking it was there to be dragged, when really it was there to let me lock the phone (which half makes sense I guess), hence then requiring the Fingerprint unlock. Confusing, but makes more sense now.

I was doing the same thing, which is why I asked about smart lock because I think that is the only time you will come across this issue. The more you know!
Guys I have a serious problem w my P10 Lite. I'm using the fingerprint scanner for locking/unlocking my device and it has been great or those few days that I have the phone, but there is a problem. It happend to me twice now: I'm taking out my phone from my pocket and I'm unable to unlock the phone due to "to many attemps of unlocking the phone" and I have wait 10 minutes (seriously?!) to try again...I dont get it, how is it possible ? My thigh skin "attepms" to unlock my phone thorough my trousers?
How can I at least disable this "to many attemps" feature?
I face this problem before and this is my highly suspected findings, correct me if I am wrong.
You must have turned on the "notifications turn on screen" under settings -> notification & status bar. Therefore, when there is a new notification came in, your screen is on while the phone is in your pocket. The finger print scanner is activated. While you were walking, the phone (finger print scanner) was rubbing the clothes and it thought you are attempting to scan a "finger print" but of course not, that's why it was an "attempt" and failed. After don't know failed for how many times, it will only allow you to unlock again after 10 mins.
What I do now is, i turn off the "notifications turn on screen" feature. If you still want this feature turned on, when you put the phone in your pocket, maybe let the screen face out, not facing your leg. Maybe another way is to use a flip cover? As long as don't let the finger print scanner touches any where while the screen is turned on by new notifications.
ok, this is wierd, I do not see this setting anywhere. but when I type it in the search bar it shows up under "notification & status bar"
Anyone noticed theirs? Mine auto brightness is already activated, when I unlocked the screen it gets bright even when the environment is dark. But my auto brightness mode is working.

Yes it's annoying as all hell. Takes about a minute to adjust but it's blinding at night.
That happens cause I use iris. So in dark rooms, I just use the fingerprint.
If you don't mind the inconvenience caused by having to swipe first before using iris unlock, disable the "Iris unlock immediately when screen turns on" option in Iris Scanner.
The screen has to be brighter than normal initally in order to provide enough light for iris scanning (without the circles for guidance).
The screen is no longer brighter when using iris unlock later because it now requires you to position your eyes within the circles.
Personally, I'm perfectly fine with the brighter screen initially.
At home you can get around it by setting it as a trusted location and then go into display/navigation bar and switch "unlock with home button" to on. That way you can just press the home location and your phone will bypass security/lock screen and go directly to the home screen. That is you can if you're not hiding an affair or other skulduggery from your partner in which case you might want to skip this method. lol
Anyhow you will retain your set security method outside of the trusted location, in my experience I'll usually be trusted around the house and yard but much past it I wont be. This also makes it nice for when you're home with the phone next to you and you want to interact with it without picking it up, you press home and you're in.
Unlocking screen brightness on Android.
This is only an Android Oreo + ( Android 8.0+). I only have this issue with my newer phone which is Android Oreo. It happenes with whatever method I use to unlock my phone. It's an auto brightness setting but it's doesn't seem to be listed as any sort of brightness setting. It's not even in the developer settings. If anyone knows how to disable the unlocking brightness feature, that would be helpful.
This happens for me when I face recognition on so the camera can see my face in the dark. You can change this in Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Face Recognition > Brighten Screen. Turning Brighten Screen off should keep the screen dim in the dark but you'll probably have to unlock with your fingerprint or something.
Galaxy A70
Really annoying this brightness. Even try every thing to keep this brightness on manually set point but at time of unlock, it increase in the middle of the night. Please any one help. Is it a problem of software or hardware.
I haven't notice this at all...
The only problem with this glorious device
I'm on Note 10+ and this is the only issue with this device. In the last three months I've used Pixel 3 and Apple Max and they've both figured this out. The blinding light is terrible. Middle of the night, or first when you wake up.
SOLUTION - If you have fave face recognition:
- Go into settings, select Biometrics and security.
- Select Face recognition.
- Tap on the switch on the right-hand side to turn on/off.
Anyone know if there's a way to disable the fingerprint scanner activating any time I pick up the phone now? Never did that before the update, it's pretty annoying. Already have lift to wake turned off, but that doesn't fix it. Went through every setting and didn't see a way to fix it. And it's not the lift to wake option, the whole screen doesn't turn on, just the fingerprint scanner and icon. Seems to be making my battery life way worse.

Because Blu cust support has not duplicated it, others with update didn't duplicate it.
Makes it seem like just your phone.
Did you try to factory reset it.
Fully. Remove saved fingerprint remove accounts,
Reboot to recovery and do factory reset. Setup phone again

Late reply I know but I found out how to disable this option.
In the settings go to:
Display->Ambient Display
Turn off the option for New Notifications.
I have no idea why it is called this as new notifications (SMS at least from my quick test) still wake the screen, but the fingerprint sensor no longer shows when you lift or move your phone. Completely mislabeled but hey at least you can turn it off.
