Hi, if I were to get an unlocked Galaxy Note GSM, would I have to do anything fancy to get HSPA+ (4G) to work on it?
Would it be as easy as to pop in my SIM card and go to work like on any T-Mobile device?
Please respond back soon because I am trying to buy one tonight off a guy on craigslist, I don't want to get ripped off!

I don't want LTE. I want T-Mobile HSPA+. Will it work by putting a sim card in it?
then you'll need to wait until T-Mobile repurposes their 1900MHz band for HSPA+. I don't know if they're doing it for the whole country, but it has started to happen in some areas already

Well it's just to make phone calls. It's okay if I don't have internet connectivity everywhere. I am going to be buying it off a guy on craigslist in a place where I normally get service... he's selling it to me for only $450. Kind of nervous that it's a fake/scam.

Sorry but don't count on anything more the edge on TMobile, unless you are really lucky and you are in a 1900 Mhz area. If you want TMobile buy an AT&T Note and you will have to do some hacking to get the radio working on TMobile.

Don't expect the entire US to get 1900Mhz 3G on tmobile, since the radio spectrum is subdivided differently depending on the cities.
Mostly the west coast and pennsylvania so far

So there's no such hack for the international note? I don't understand how an internationally unlocked phone doesn't support USA GSM highspeed. My T-Mobile G1 supports HSPA+.
Does AT&T 4G work with the international Note? I have it now and I'm only getting 2G. It's god awfully slow.
If you want to buy Note N7000 you will get EDGE on Tmobile.

I'm on the Left Coast, maybe should l see if 1900Mhz is in my area.
To be honest, I'm actually happy with me my broadband sim on AT&T. I just had the LTE code added to my account and I got a little boost in speed on HSPA+. I'm seeing 8Mbps down and the speed seems more stable then before. It does seem to be ramping up to max speed a little slower and I have a firm upload cap at about 1Mbps, before I occasionally would hit 1.5 Mbps. HSPA+ does seem to do Skype and Google Voice pretty well, I've been managing to use a a data sim as a phone quite successfully.

The international Note gets HSPA+ on the AT&T no problem. I'm currently enjoying my H+ icon with my Red Pocket sim card.
The International and American Notes have entirely different hardware inside. The American Note has a pentaband radio that can be reflashed for either AT&T or T-Mobile frequencies. The International note does not.

Wrong. The International Note has a pentaband radio. It's the same modem as the Galaxy Nexus GSM.
It just so happens that the AT&T Note shares the almost the same hardware with the T-Mobile S2 which makes it easier in terms of getting the modem from the T-Mobile S2 to work on the AT&T Note. This is why how they got the hack working on the AT&T Note.
This DOES NOT WORK on the Int Galaxy Note as we are running an Exynos/Infineon chip/baseband.
Okay. Instead of arguing with each other about who can spout-off the N7000's and i717's specs most accurately, why don't we just give the OP a simple, comprehensive answer?
Okay. To answer your question, the N7000 (International Note) will work perfectly fine on T-Mobile US. Phone calls, SMS messages, and data will all work perfectly. The issue, however, is not with the services you can get, but the quality of the services you can get. Even though the N7000 is an "international" GSM device, T-Mobile uses irregular frequencies for it's HSPA+ network. Specifically, instead of supporting HSPA+ on a single frequency, T-Mobile's HSPA+ service is divided between 1700MHz and 2100MHz in what is referred to as 1700/2100 AWS (Advanced Wireless Spectrum). Because AWS is a rare and unusual implementation of HSPA+, almost no "international" phone models support it. In most cases, only phones meant specifically for North America support it. What this means, simply, is that the N7000 will never be capable of using T-Mobile's HSPA+ network (unless you have the rare privelege of being in a 1900MHz HSPA+ area).
Now, just because the N7000 won't let you use T-Mobile's AWS HSPA+, it doesn't mean you can't have your cake and eat it too. Granted, it is a small concession, but the i717 is a "more than adequate" smartphone and will (with some minor modification) make neat work of connecting to T-Mobile's AWS HSPA+ network. Preliminary speed tests even suggest that the i717 is faster on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network than the N7000 is on AT&T's HSPA+ network. So, if you're willing to sacrifice the added speed and power the Exynos SoC offers, you could gain T-Mobile 3G compatibility and NFC to boot just by opting for the i717; which, I might add, is only $649.99 off-contract at AT&T.
If I can help clarify any confusion or answer any questions, please feel free to ask. I know there are a lot of people out there who feel very strongly about which version of the Note is superior. However, it's my opinion that when you come across someone who's undecided, you should simply give them the facts and allow them to make their own decision. Passionately mixing facts with opinion only serves to further confuse things.

i live in boston and decided to call tmobile about the 3/4g coverage. supposedly the 1900 band is now in use for tmobile 3g. so i cant get 4g but i could get 3g...now i have to hunt down a non att branded note. the map the lady referred to was dated june 6th 2012 so im hoping her stuff is right.
hate to buy a not and still be stuck on edge.

My situation:
1. I've been with Sprint since the OG Evo, but after getting the One, I was really frustrated with the slow LTE speeds especially after years of Network Vision promises and paying an extra $10 a month (per phone) for "high speed data" that was anything but. I was also irked at all the crap I had to go through to get the SIM unlocked.
2. The area I live in has refarmed HSPA+ to the 1900Mhz band.
3. The area I live in has AWS LTE.
4. I currently have a Sprint, T-Mobile, and Developer Edition One.
My original plan was to use the DE to test the TMO network to see if it was faster than Sprint and available in all the places I frequent. If so, then I'd sell my (now SIM unlocked) Sprint model and keep the DE, otherwise, I'd return the DE for a refund.
But over the last week and a half I've noticed that, while LTE speeds were frequently pretty high (15-20Mbps) there were still plenty of times when I was only seeing an H or an E. I couldn't even tell if the H was HSPA or HSPA+. So then I began to wonder if I was missing out because of the lack of the 1700Mhz band, thus I bought the TMO version to see if I was missing anything.
Turns out, I wasn't. The H I've been seeing is indeed HSPA+ but nowhere near the advertised 42Mbps. Granted, I wasn't naive enough to think I would pull 42Mbps even with the TMO version, but I expected to get at least in the 20-30Mbps range, instead I've been seeing 5-9Mbps. (Thanks to the Sensorly app, I can now tell which H I'm seeing).
After running around with TMO version, I'm seeing the exact same speeds in the same places. So, I'm not missing anything by not having 1700Mhz. In the meantime, TMO is still refarming more areas so the 1700Mhz is becoming less and less important.
So what about Sprint? At their lowest, the TMO speeds are equal to or a little above the Sprint speeds I've been seeing (my wife inherited the Sprint version during this trial run), and at their highest, Sprint can't touch them (in this area--I've gotten up to 20Mbps in PA).
So T-Mobile it is. When the wife's contract is up at the end of the month, the Sprint model is going up on Swappa. Meanwhile, the TMO version is going back to the store tomorrow.
What about AT&T you ask? Way faster, but way more expensive. Truth is, I spend most of my time on wifi anyway, so I'm not willing to pay AT&T prices for cable internet speeds for the times in between.
Hope this helps anyone else facing the same dilemma.

There is not a single provider in my area that carries the HTC One and has LTE. I wish I even had a choice to be able to test. Verizon has LTE in my area, but no HTC one. I wonder how many other people are in my same situation?

T-Mobile sucks in my area... My sprint speeds are in my sig.
Thinking of jumping ship to TMO, for the simple fact I can get root on all my devices. No contract, unlimited everything. Where I am hoping I don't have any issues with service. I am curious to know what the thoughts of everyone. Pro's Con's of switching/staying and or buying a TMO N4 to use on ATT network..

Read through it. Issue I am having is the wife is having better service in some areas where ATT isn't as good. But I am finding that in some cases, ATT is faster in speed tests. TMO has been solid as far as service where I live..
Sucks, cause I can't find a solid answer for the people who have had the chance to try both carriers and who they like best. ATT has a higher over cost, but is that worth "better" service?

FWIW, I've noticed that the spots that I mainly have less than stellar service is through stretches of road away from the major cities. For me, I commute / work / live around a major city, as do my friends and family so it isn't a factor for me. As far as AT&T goes, a few of my friends have AT&T, and I will get better service in spots compared to them and vice versa. I would tell you to try out the T-Mobile test drive option if they still have it. You can try an iPhone or I believe a GS5 for seven days to gauge the service for yourself. As far as I can tell though the service, coverage, and speed are roughly the same in and around major cities and highly populated areas.

If you do the 7 day T-Mobile thing your credit card will get a hold of $700 plus and if you don't bring the iPhone back in 7 days it will get charged. If that's a issue I think you can buy a cheap phone and test it then return? I love T-Mobile. I had Sprint for 14 years. Now a year and a half with T-Mobile.

The only thing with that is they give you an iPhone 5S, which handles T-Mobile's AWS frequencies quite poorly. If possible, I would take that sim and put it into a T-Mobile branded Android device for better service.
AT&T will always have better coverage as they have their HSPA+ on band 5, 850mhz, which goes way farther than band 4, 1700 mhz. AT&T also has nationwide LTE on band 17, 700mhz.

not everyone needs "nationwide" lte; if you dont travel much, and if tmobile is great in your area, none of that other stuff matters..
Tmobile is fantastic in chicago land, and since I dont travel for a living anymore, I love the savings, the coverage, the speed, everything about it..

I'm from the Chicago land area, and I can tell you they're not good. When traveling, only about 20 miles outside the city, my data went from LTE to 4G to E back and fourth. I was also in Des Plaines, IL and data was nothing but weak 4G and E inside buildings. My AT&T phone was always on LTE. Back at home, same thing. Good coverage outside, terrible signal inside buildings. I don't think I'd complain if the EDGE actually worked lol.
For years they had nothing but EDGE at my house, and now its finally LTE (but weak). So they are improving the signals with additional antennas. I just don't think its enough. Not every market will get their band 12, 700mhz spectrum do to channel 51 interference.

In another thread a person on here said T-Mobile wasn't good where I live. Coverage is great pretty much everywhere I go so guess maybe that person had a dud phone.
Right now I am able to test 2 Note 4's. One on TMO, and the other on ATT. Some areas have been better for ATT, and vice versa for TMO. Speed tests seem to favor ATT a little. But with download booster on TMO unlimited LTE, I think that might edge a head some. I don't travel a ton, the areas I do travel are usually major highways and major cities.. So once I am able to go to a few more places that will give me a better idea of who I want to stick with.

Have you traveled out to Northwest, IN? They've gotten a lot better, but still are weak. I have no desire to use them. Especially now that I have 20GB of data from AT&T for $100. AT&T is miles a head of T-Mobile in my area.
Hi I have Verizon Pixel 5 and have no 5g nationwide I went down to the US Bank Stadium and got 5g uw and it is fast 1,483- 1,730 mbps down and 86-95 mbps up. but I have tried all over and can not get 5g nationwide just LTE anybody getting 5g ????

If you got uw then you were practically standing on top of it. I've seen 5g on my phone but no huge boost in speed. I get about 65Mbps d/l and 12 u/l.
I have a business account with over 700 lines with verizon and had an in-depth conversation about 5g with my rep as I didn't want employees asking for 5g phone because they hear it was so much faster. I'm glad I did as it is not ready yet for everyone.
She mentioned that ultra is not available in all areas as of now and that standard 5g is being run on top of the LTE network. She did say that standard 5g is a little faster than LTE.
This being said when I see 5g I am seeing up to 150 up and 20 down.
They needed to compete with Tmob and att since they are all doing the same thing and put it on top of LTE until they can have ultra 5g in most areas.

I am on AT&T and I get the "5Ge" instead of LTE, which is basically LTE Enhanced.
Today, all of a sudden, I see 5G showing up on my HK model G9980. I just did the big update Doesn't feel faster than LTE. Does anyone else know about this?
Has TMOB got additional 5G banks that work in the US ? Did they just switch them on? It means this is now a US and much of ROW 5G phone.
It's Low Band 5G on Tmobile, as you stated not much different than 4G LTE. Tmobile doesn't offer super fast mmWave 5G, only Verizon and AT&T but at this point their coverage is very limited. Since there's not much difference between Low Band 5G and 4G LTE it might be better to stick with 4G LTE as 5G consumes more power. You can check compatibility with your IMEI Number here.

Yes, but the point is the 9880 doesn't have band 260 and 261, and up until today I never had 5G in the US on this device.

It's likely 5G Band N41 anchored to 4G LTE on Band 2. Both of these are functional on the SM-G9980 and utilized by Tmobile.
Can you explain what you mean? I would like to understand better.
I notice there's a developer option called 5G Network Mode (SA + NSA etc). What is that all about?

NSA anchors the control signaling of 5G Radio Networks to the 4G Core, while the SA scheme connects the 5G Radio directly to the 5G core network, the control signaling does not depend on the 4G network.
It says 5G most of the time now but speeds are essentially the same as 4g in the US. So it isn't real 5G?
