I realise there was a giant mad thread about this that just got closed and I'm not interested in reforming that here. I have a few questions and would like some discussion but not interested in arguments
1) Prices where you are?
Where I live (New Zealand) Nexus One cost about the same as the Galaxy S. I'm just wondering is the Nexus One regarded as a cheaper phone in America or where ever you live (I realise it's not sold anymore, but before they stopped selling it) and when I say cheaper I mean purely money wise, not feel or anything.
I ask this because I've seen the statement before: "Galaxy S is great but it's not worth the extra money from a Nexus" and just wondering if that's how it really is.
2) Gaming?
I'm curious as I see a lot of people here defending their Nexus One's over the Galaxy S and I understand the reasons they give however I have a feeling all the people that prefer their Nexus One's to any Galaxy S series phone don't use their phones for gaming much, if at all. Would this be correct?
I currently own a Nexus One and I have to be honest for gaming it really sucks. I was so excited for Gameboy & Playstation emulators and I can't play any kind of RPG or Action game on them that requires me to push more than 1 button at a time or it registers my fingers all over the place!
My Situation
Due to prices being what I believe to be a little backwards here I can sell my old Nexus One (with a couple of little marks around it, etc, basically it's just used) and buy a BRAND NEW 8GB Galaxy S and it would only cost me a maximum of $100 ($70 US) or if things work out well it'd cost me nothing at all. Which brings me to question 3...
3) Should I 'upgrade'?
I know a lot of people don't consider it an 'upgrade' however for me personally I consider it entirely worth it for the GPU & multitouch alone. I brought my Nexus One excited of the idea of multi touch gaming and am guttered at how virtually any emulated or 3d game performs on my N1 (I was totally unaware of the lack of multi-touch when I brought the phone)
Also I'm interested in any sort of discussion on reasons for/against switching to a Galaxy S but please no NEXUS ONE IS BEST DIE IPHONE FANBOY GALAXY IS CHEAP PLASTIC crap. I love my Nexus but I feel the Galaxy better suits me.
Ok. I was probably one of the ones who was arguing in the other thread but I didnt start it. I got bashed because I said the Galaxy is the better phone.
Anyways Im not going down that road again. Ive got both phones at this moment and if your into gaming I say go to the Galaxy. Is the galaxy a way better phone, no, But what it has is definetely a upgrade. Ive said it before and ill say it again. On the sgs I never have to check my memory worrying about if I got enough room to install a new app, I used to check daily on my n1. I never ever check memory as I still got over 1.2 gigs left and about 120 apps installed. Gaming, Im not to into gaming as Im a 27 year old man, but when I do Id like to be able to play them well, and On the n1 it was a total failure. Toon warz would wig out when you shoot and run at the same time and when you let go of shooting it will still be shooting because of the axis problem. Pinch to zoom alone even in the browser isnt even as close to the SGS.
The super amoled is way better than regular amoled and makes it look like a TFT screen.
Im not gonna go into more about how the sgs beats the n1 cause ive done that enough, so Ill answer your question.
Hell yes I am, the SGS is the better device, by a lot? No, but enough for me to upgrade. The MT alone is enough for a upgrade and you wanna play games? well the SGS has no problem playing toon warz. I need a top device that can multitouch, and the N1 will never, ever be able to play MT games well. Even the old Iphone2g had better MT screen than the n1. I actually laugh at people who think the N1 handles 3d games as well as the SGS. Just not gonna happen. Go on youtube and watch on Android.com I believe the benchmarks vs SGS against droid x, evo and n1, the dude even plays asphalt and even the Video maker says that the SGS blows it all away.
Im not dogging the n1 cause im keeping mine, its a great phone and a great developer phone, but if you want gaming or for movies, the n1 is just not the device for that. The SGS sounds more like its what your looking for, True MT, More responsive for games, bigger screen and Waaaay brighter.

No hating on me this time please. The n1 is great, but common, the SGS out Specs it in almost all departments.
1) Not from what I remember, I payed $530 out right for my Nexus when it came out, Most of the current galaxy s phones are currently going for cheap on Amazon and such. I think it was basically free with a 2 year last I saw.
2) The GalaxyS has a getter GPU then the Nexus One (and most of the snapdragon phones to be fair) so the GalaxyS would most definitely play games better then the Nexus One.
3) It appears that 3D gaming is important to you, and if thats what you want the the GalxS phones should work great for you. Also the CPU is a smidgin' better on the GalxS then on the Nexus.
Most people in the Nexus One forums including myself see anything that doesnt give the freedom like a dev phone is a downgrade. That is where the "its not an upgrade" thing is coming from. Because with the mod community you basically never have an old phone, you can always flash a new rom and be totally different from anyone else.

If you want something for gaming i suggest waiting for a Tegra 2 tablet or if you dont like tablets LG is making some Tegra 2 Phones which will be super fast..or you can get the Milestone 2 when it comes out.
I don't for a second believe Samsung will put the requisite priority on upgrading the OS to the latest Android. I think it will get upgraded, unlike the Behold II, but I don't think it'll happen for MONTHS after phones like the N1. Also, Touchwiz is hideous and changing to ADW or LP doesn't help with the cartoonish icons.
That being said, I AM jealous of the screen, processor, and multitouch sensor... just not enough to put myself into what I know will be a very frustrating position in a few months.

That's one thing I'll definitely miss however I'm an absolute sucker for interface and screens.
For example the physics bounce back in list menus on the Galaxy S! Such a simple thing but to me I see it as so important as it's something that you constantly encounter and I love the overall feel it gives to the device.
and I think anyone that has used it has to admit that the 4 inch screen is beautiful and I wasn't sure I would but after using it I think the 4inch is a great size (I'm thinking Droid X & EVO would be too big for me)
I'm sad to admit it but the iPhone still kicks Android's ass with its gestures and physics. I prefer Android in every other area of the OS but for example the Gallery and Web Browser in iPhone if you have a play with it you'll see what I mean with the pinch to zoom, it is really really nice to use. I always wished my Nexus had that and I'm glad to see Samsung took some steps towards getting that feel to Android (with the list bounce back etc.)
but back to my point. I love the developer side of my Nexus one and that we get new versions etc so early however I'm the sort of person that everytime I open the Gallery app I have to do a wee pinch on each photo just because I love gestures and multi touch so much or will unlock my phone just to look at the big screen and the live wallpaper with water rippling in my hand and I think thats why I feel so drawn to the Galaxy S with its giant bright screen and amazing GPU that can render that awesome Samsung live water wallpaper with ease (check it out if you haven't)

I see what you're saying and I considered this as well however with my situation that I mentioned in the OP I currently have the opportunity to move to a Galaxy S with little or no cost, however when it comes to these next generation devices coming out later this year my Nexus will be worth a lot less and it will cost a lot more to upgrade to them.
I probably will buy a new device about mid way through next year and I will be willing to put more money into one then, however I don't want to (or mainly my girlfriend doesn't want me to ) put another few hundred into a phone in a few months time.

Pinch to peak is horrible on the n1. Funny thing is they added that while testing it on the n1. I guess they assumed no more clearpad 2000.
I love mt gestures as well. Feels futuristic.

I believe phones work different over there how you buy them on contract and get them cheaper etc.
Here you just buy whatever phone and put a sim card in it, be it 'pre-pay' or 'on account'. So all phones are 'unlocked'

i am the owner of a nexus one. nearly all my phones have been from htc. i love the htc brand because of the community(xda). it is a fact everybody has to agree. an example the i5700 (comparable to the hero) but u can take a look yourself who got the better development... xperia x10 ...excellent hardware but no community support and they merely got root.
Is it an upgrade?
Hmmmm...arguable. Hardware- absolutely. the samsung i9000 is definetely an upgrade in terms of hardware but u have to keep in mind that it is 7 months newer than n1. both phones have their goods and bads. no phone is perfect. I said arguable because i am sure software wise that n1 is and will be superior. Most of us here like to flash roms, change builds..... this makes the difference (as i stated in the beginning).i do not think i9000 will get the support of this community. Just take a look at how many custom roms are present for i9000. Also at the end of the year , n1(google's developers phone) will definetely be gettting the gingerbread whereas the i9000 will be stuck on 2.2. remember that i9000 already got the upgrade from 2.1 to froyo ; so 2 upgrades for a phone is less likely. this is the policy of phones companies, instead of pushing an upgrade for the phone, they will release a new phone with gingerbread .
Is it worth?
i wont be upgrading the n1 until the 2gz or dualcore processors are out but It depends on u and ur means. Phones nowadays do not reign as a flsgship more than 3-4 months , maybe less. eg... desire hd will be out soon, then in Q2 2011, samsung is releasing a phone with 2gz processor with 1gb memory, ... android 4.0. If you have the money, ... ur choice.

If you are so concerned about gaming, sincerely.. i would advise you to take an iphone. I myself would never buy and iphone (hate it cause i am flash addicted and i am not into games).We here at xda tend to critisize the iphones but i have to admit that it is the best at multimedia purposes mainly gaming....
You can upgrade to i9000 if u want but maybe i am wrong but the android market currently do not have many graphical games that would suit ur needs nd by the time these games get developed, then it will be time to reupgrade the phone... vicious circle!

I'm not entirely about gaming and I couldn't stand to buy an iPhone, many things about it disgust me. Such as a homescreen that is only an app draw!? How they deny flash, how they block countless applications, how I have to run iTunes to do anything.. argh I could go on forever. So iPhone is not for me, I love Android. As I said before however if it came down to it I think I like live backgrounds, multitouch gestures, large screens more than I like the development side... Very tough choice though.

Also on another note I believe Galaxy S series is soon going to become a Cyanogen Mod supported device which pretty much means it'll get all the development I need am I right in assuming this??
I mean, hell it even brought 2.2 to the G1! So I can assume if Cyanogen does a version 7 for 3.0 and Galaxy S is a supported device that I could eventually see 3.0 through Cyanogen Mod if Samsung never decided to do an update?

haha yeah I saw that video the other day. The GPU is amazing in the Galaxy S phones, definitely in a league of its own at the moment.
If your just going to use the phone as it is I would say galaxy s, but on the flip side if to want root and gear developer base be patient or go with the nexus 1.

I'm not really that worried about Galaxy S development btw. There has been more than 2 million (I think it might be over 3?) sold already counting US & International version sales. Just two days ago when a test Froyo build got leaked the Galaxy S (international) development thread had over 1000 people viewing it. I think all the rom development (although there already are a few out atm) are waiting for Samsungs offical 2.2 which is coming out in a couple of weeks.
Galaxy TAB. Prob run same as the Galaxy S. Why go with 4" when you can have 7" screen. Wait and see tomorrow what the specs are going to be. Keep your n1 and wait for the TAB i say. I bought a captivate. Surely a great phone. I got frustrated with the development on the Captivate. I figured it will be that way. CM will be out but who knows when it will be released no word. I bet when a official froyo will be released they will release the CM6 as well. Gives them some time to work on it. If you really want to game and watch movie do it on a bigger screen. Why on a 4" screen. My n1 will hold up to what i need to do to survive a day without any laggs, glitch or whateva i throw at it. It runs like a champ. N1 will only be replaced by N1. Yeah not good for game but it will do everything else. So if you looking for a gamer type of phone, SGS is good to go but you will be without much development. Plus even with CM, i don't see ginerbread running on the SGS. My 2 cents.

Development will be just fine. Like you said, all 4 carriers and sold a lot so far. More people are on the sgs.
You wont regret it, I say go sgs ...

Dont be confused here, they are separate phones, each will require different roms. Do not make the mistake of counting all sgs phones in the same basket, as far as the mod community is concerned they are separate phones each require separately coded roms.

Agreed!!!!! all galaxy s phones are not the same!
Also another point to be noted is that number of phones sold is not necessarily directly proportional to the development ...
e.g, 1. i guess that (like they say) nexus one is a flop in sales but however has had enormous activity in the development section.
2. Motorola milestone/droid had an enormous success in sales(also sold millions). but did it have the kind of development we are used to???
It all comes to whether Samsung will improve their security on the bootloader bla bla bla on their froyo upgrade. and depends whether the quality chefs are shifting to the sgs or not.

Correct, but they will be easy to cross mod since most the files and codes are alike, yes they will require different Roms and etc, but if the epic 4g can do something chances are the others can with a slightly different way.

I'm a smartphone geek and I always thought the Samsung Wave was just another high-end feature-phone, probably loaded with Symbian r WindowsMobile6.
On sites I kept reading "it has similar specs to Galaxy S" everywhere so I was prompted to check it out.
And they're right its got the same Hummingbird and 512mb RAM! (not sure about the SGX540 graphics though that would be OVERkill!!!) Also they share all the same features (unsure about Wifi-n and TVout), excludig the LED torch of some SGS's.
And I've got to say it is more beautifully built than the Galaxy S.
I think it is better than that plastic beast in EVERY way except smaller screen size and OS.
I was "saving up" and doing research on which GalaxyS to purchase or import (I live in Australia), BUT now I've changed my mind.
I hope and someone talented can get root access on BADA's custom linux kernel and find a means of installing CFW. Then perhaps the Galaxy S ROM might go straight in and have the correct drivers. Then the hard parts over, less-experienced (but still highly praised) developers can iron out the bugs, improve response, stability and battery life.
I'm a long-time follower of XDANDROID, so yes I know what it takes. But since underneath its still running a linux kernel, the Android Rom would be easily execute and flash once Root is accessed. Fingers crossed the inards are very similar/same (to Galaxy S), since that's a sexy-beast and it would mean we already have the drivers needed.
And what makes this proposal so so and so (lost for words here, great doesn't cut it), is that this phone bought outright is very cheap and its also offered on some of the cheapest plans ... like FREE if your on the $19 plan @2yrs.
Plz Plz, someone make this happen (and also let me know if its the SGX540 in there), I'm willing to donate. In fact, if we can get a SGS ROM that isn't too bad, I will happily pay half or a third of the difference between this and the SGS (sorry I'm a poor uni student with gadgetphilia). And I believe so would most Wave owners, once they realize the benefits!
I am using Samsung Wave S8500, it is a great phone but the only drawback is Applications and Games of Bada, buying option is not available in my country Pakistan, been using wavespoofer to make thing work but now after upgrading cant use the spoof method too.
So i am thinking of switching to Samsung Galaxy S, after reading reviews and comments the only drawback is the lack of LED Flash with Camera and it lags a lot and the black screen issue, so i am really confused should i buy this or should i buy some other phone like HTC Desire, please guide me.

The shortest way to answer this is that I myself had a samsung wave n i thought it was a brilliant phone but then i switched to the Galaxy s and i don't regret it. It was a brilliant decision when i decided to get the galaxy s. So go for it
There's a lot to do with the phone in the development section to fix the lag but make sure u understand everything before doing anything.

SGS is still the best out there, and lack of flash for the camera is easely resolved with the "night mode" (Google it for sample pictures).
But then, within 6 months, it'll be overtaken by all the dual core phones.
In a few days next gen galaxy s is going to be launched.. And the dual core generation is going to take over everywhere.. Htc, samsung, moto.. Etc..
Beside this.. I ll never recommend a samsung galaxy s.. Full of issues.. If u are buying a new phone then y should u look for after market solutions like lag fix etc.. That kills ur warranty too.. I had a htc desire n I miss it.. Htc is the way if u need android.. Smooth UI.. QUICKER updates.. Dont go with gimmicks like super amoled etc.. Whats the point if u keep looking at a black screen every now n then..
Buy htc desire hd or htc desire n be happy.
Dont buy SGS.. Personal experience.. Its laggy.. Touchwiz sucks in front of htc sense..

Because this is my experience with sgs I was an end user
I wanted to buy Omnia 7 but its was not available in my country or any other wp7 and Iphone 4 was too costly.
And still omnia 7 is not available in my country you (sad samsung)
So in the end I bought SGS. And was hopping that it will get wp7. I thought this because news are comming like this that HD2 will get wp7 and I saw some vidoes of HD2 with wp7 on youtube
When I got sgs I have only adhoc wifi connection in my house with my pc. Adhoc mode which is the basic wifi feature dose not supported by sgs or android. which wasted my 2 days for fixing that basic feature. because for that I have to learn how to root what is download mode what is superuser and bla bla bla.(You really suck! SGS or Android I dont know whos fault SGS or Android).
Then I started search for "wp7 for SGS" and I came to XDA-DEVELOPERS.COM
I wish I would never came here. but I came.
And I found lagfix, custom roms, rooting and etc... for sgs (More scary things and time wasting) not thats all
SGS dose not support wpa2-enterprise wifi security feature. Because of this I cant use internet of my isp on my SGS, no dedicated cam button (At buying time I thought it will be ok but I was wrong dedicated cam button must req and not having flash is still ok) etc.
My experience with SGS and Android is it still incomplete not stable but it is inovative. But inovation will copied here and there(android copied base of Iphone and windows phone inovation, now iphone and wp7 will copy android inovation)
So if you are an end user buy Iphone or any WP7.
I like Omnia 7.
yepp, i think currently it is really one of the best android phones. though you should know new (dual core) models will be coming within months so if it's not urgent, strong hardware is important and you and you have money, maybe you should wait a bit.

If your looking for a high end android device you will most certainly come across galaxy s devices. The super amoled screen isn't a gimmick, its amazing. Aside from the I4, I don't think you can beat the display. Who looks at a black screen now and again? If your referring to the phone being in sleep mode before turning it on, then yes, there is a brief moment where the screen is black but I wouldn't say people are actually looking at that screen. (What's to look at? )

if u want the thing to just work then never ever go to near any andriod device coz u have to spend time with it . buy iphone or wp7.
or if u love to play with things then sgs is good to go still i recommend to w8 for dual core phones

I am a 5 month galaxy user and I can tell you: i doesn't worth to buy one. Buy a HTC or motorola. I started to hate samsung. Mine has a graphics problem that I can't figure out wht's it's source.... I will try to sell it. Hopefully I will be able to sell it at a reasonable price.
If you are going to root and flash a custom rom YES
If you don't wanna do that NO
That simple
If you enjoy modding and want TV-out buy SGS.
If you enjoy modding but don't want TV-Out buy HTC.
If you want games, buy IPhone.
If you want large tiles on your home screen buy WP7 (or mod your android using Desktop Visualizer)
If you want to take quality pics and vids buy Nokia N8.
Do we really need Dual Cores on our phones?
I think it's worth the buy. It does break your warranty to have lag fix, but who doesn't know how to get around that. Just do recovery mode (i swear it's super easy to do) and reformat everything. The phone is super fast, the bugs are a problem but it's fixed after rooting and lagfix. Although right now it's better to buy the galaxy 2 that's coming out soon, that'll probably be better for your price as the dual cores galaxy s will probably be the same price. Try and go to places and see if they have a display of the product and try it out for yourself.
The Motorola Atrix looks decent...should be out by March or so.
SGS is a decent phone in my opinion. If you can get one for a good price and one with the latest firmware / hardware upgrades so you don't have to deal with all this lag and bricking issues, I would.
If you want decent GPS - no (design flaw/constraint)
If you want decent audio - no (samsh!t fcked up the audio)
If you want decent mic for recording sound even in videos and phone conversations - no (overly sensitive, single mic)
If you want decent fluid like display - no (can see individual pixels on sgs horrible)
If you want decent material case - no (sgs mostly, if not all plastic)
Wait for different handset, perhaps the newer models with nvidia tegra 2, once you see what the battery life is like for dual core phones.

- a lot of you guys saying that the sgs is one of the best phones - yes it is one of the best android phones - the screen is brilliant and android is cool.
i bought it on the 24th of june 2010 - it was the second day they sold it in germany ^^ without custom firmware and lagfixes it wouldnt be useful for me... if you use it only for making phone calls and having a few internet apps installed everything is fine - but more than 30 apps... you need a lagfix or android 2.2.1...
If i would like to have a new phone - i would wait until march when the LG Speed is announced. this is the next top-phone i think.
if it doesnt matter what system you wanna use... iphone... its reliable - really. but i dont like apple :|

With Black screen I meant the lag which phone faces.. The black screen appears on numerous occasions going from one random option to the other.. Its the lag..
We know that there are fixes for most of the sgs issues.. But it feels terrible to fix a new phone we bought, when there are phones in the market which do not require such fixes..

I have the galaxy S and my wife has the wave.... the wave is terrible compared to the Galaxy S..... so in Short Yes buy one you won't be disappointed. Sell your wave or try and find a way to install Android on it.
It still is kinda confusing, for sure i will change my Wave to some other device, may be i should wait for Galaxy S 2 i think they are announcing it on 13th Feb or LG Optimus X2 it looks cool too but they forgot the put Radio on it.
I usually play games, watch videos and play with the camera taking picutres making videos, not a fan of programming and stuff, Galaxy S 2 and Optimus 2X both look cool, lets see how dual core thing effects the industry.
Good decision.. Wait for dual core machinery to hit the shelves.. Not only it will give u more options but it will also bring down the price of current devices..
I am seriously recommending u to not to buy a samsung phone.. Be it whatever android.. The entire galaxy s line suffered the delay in upgrade to froyo.. Some have still not received.. N on the other hand samsung released other new devices with 2.2 out of the box..
They just want to sell new phones.. Older phones they just sell and forget..
Htc released a froyo update for legend which is one of the initial droids.. This shows how dedicated are these companies for their customers..

Work with me and I shall return the effort.So with that said... with this post here I am officially one step closer at trying something completely new to me. For the sake of incite for the wall of text I shall summarize what to expect all this text for; It's for a audiophile and his Music, New Devices and its respective OS, and What I can do with them (Root). I have been very busy in my exhaustive research.

As stated Music is a big thing for me, and as such I had for a time something called a Cowon J3. With its BBE enhancements along with other proprietary enhancements, a OLED Screen, Amazing Battery Life , and the ability to play practically every Audio (and Video) file under the sun It was just about everything I could ask for. But then I found I bonus use for it- Just Icing on the cake; I also used it as a portable portfolio of sorts. With its stunning OLED Screen I used it to show video and pictures of things I have made. Then I put it in my pocket and it was my Personal Media Player again. Then - Gone. ( I'm not going to elaborate in that part so please don't ask.) That's what I miss the most. I miss bringing my music with me - but oddly enough what I miss more so is not having my archive of past work at my finger tips. That's what I have been searching for. Sadly the J3 is one of a kind and has just recently discontinued. If it wasn't for the successor being right around the corner (which I have heard October) I would probably get another one and be done with it.
You can change software - But hardware is a bit more permanent - these are the things I think about when I make a "computer based" purchase. But events have forced my hand... I can't wait anymore. So I am now considering what ...I really....REALLY...I mean REALLY! ...Didn't want to consider. Blasted Newfangled Tech. I have yet to interface with an Android OS. I have of course heard about it, but don't really know much because I haven't needed to. I haven't held it in my hand and played with it. I don't know how far I can mod it. How to shape it... help make the device "My Own" (like remove the TouchWiz UI).
So with that said I first looked at tablets and settled on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. While it doesn't play FLAC out of the Box I hear that there are Android Apps one can get that can make it play .flac and sound better...like Voodoo or Power Amp (thought I would prefer BBE which unfortunately is iOS only for now). It also has a very nice screen. But then in my ever classic fashion of being thorough I said...Ok I like this; Just to make sure let's see If I can find something better. Better in this case means : Smaller, Nice Screen, Plays FLAC default...
Then I found something better. The catch was it was a "Smart Phone" - or as I call them- a REALLY small computer. The Phone in question is the Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 ( I know about the chip difference in the Samsung SGH-i717 Galaxy Note LTE).The thing is...I'm not going to use it as "A Phone" because I have a phone. It makes calls and DOESN'T DROP THEM 99.8% of the time. That's all it does. It's all I need it to do. It does a great job at it. I'm happy. There are more reasons...but it would be best not to start the rant. Not going to talk any more about it.
Therefore I want to use the small computer phone as a small computer tablet but with the main purpose of a PMP which happens to have some extra features along with it.

With that said here is what I want to do..."THE PLAN" as it were.
I intend to buy a Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 5.3" Android (Unlocked, 850/1900 3G) and use it as the world's smallest Tablet PMP. NO PHONE USE. In regards of its connection to the internet/"Google Play" I intend to use its WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct & Wi-Fi hotspot abilities when I need to. No Sim Card. I will then proceed in doing what it takes to modify it (though I don't know much about that bit right now which is why I am posting here) and add the appropriate apps to either bring it to -OR- exceed the J3 PMP Sound Quality.
I want to Root...but I have Never done anything like this before and am ignorantly unaware of how these things work (and to a degree the total power of rooting a device). All I really know is that if done incorrectly I get a really expensive paper weight. ( I imagine I will be reading a lot of your wiki...I have already gathered some info from the wiki about the wifi issue)
Is my plan/idea feasible, or will the lack of the sim card cause the wifi to be moot? I have a million questions want to ask like can I turn off the GPS and do things for tablets work with this...phonetablet? All this is in the to make sure I don't waste the cash on false pretenses.

Firstly I want to say hello to you!
Yes, you can use galaxy note without SIM card and use it only as a Wi-Fi device. You can root it, customize it, flash ROMs on it, do pretty much whatever you want. You can install different players if you want FLAC funcionality, play store has a lot of music players apss to choose from.
But I want to give you an advice. If you don't want to use it as a phone, if you want a big screened device which plays audio and video, and it's capable of browsing the web etc., then you should really consider NOT to buy Galaxy Note!
Instead you can get Galaxy player with 5' screen! It has a slower processor and a screen with lower resolution but it is far more cheaper and perfect for your needs.
Power Amp has great sound quality in my opinion and it has built in EQ so you can adjust it just the way you like it!

Woah! - you quoted the entire thing. The Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 is nice and if I was just doing thing on simply a music stand point I would be absolutely agree.
But since I the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 has a Wacom Pen in it, for me it opens up possibilities in the event I use Adobes mobile apps. In the event I am showing off things visual in nature the nicer OLED based screen is a good idea. Also its since its supposed to be a phone its smaller than the smallest average tablet...making it abit more pocketable (thought I know it's pretty big for a phone).
I don't mind putting down money If I can make the most out of it...make it worth the investment (which with the database of this place I intend to do).
Besides If I for some reason wanted it to be a phone I would likely have gone with the LTE vers. which is slower and more expensive. That's the logic I'm telling myself any way.
I don't know what some of the things you mentioned are...but I guess that gives me something to look up later on.

The note is definitely quite a step up from your old j3 . (never heard of Cowan or j3 before )
I googled a bit and found that j3 had good battery backup so if you are planning to replace that with a galaxy note you should also be aware that this phone is really powerful and it chugs up the battery like crazy.
So if you plan to go all out editing multimedia,streaming videos,dlna,wifi....it won't last that long.
I am not discouraging you from getting the note, cuz other than this issue you will absolutely love the note.

I'm not surprised at all. It's a very audiophile centric device. If it wasn't for its (or should I say Cowons reputation) for Legendary sound quality and Great Battery life they probably wouldn't exist anymore. Everything else Cowon does is...seemingly erratic and odd. They only just recently shipped their first android device with 2.3 Gingerbread, which was one of a few reasons I found was odd enough to look other places. And so... I am here.

Yes that is something I am currently looking into. It's the one thing that I'm unsure about. As quoted from your wiki (and I Samsungs website) when on Stand-By the Battery lasts Up to 960 h (2G) / Up to 820 h (3G) and during Talk time (which I'm going to presume it means use of the respective connections): Up to 26 h 10 min (2G) / Up to 13 h 30 min (3G). The thing is I won't be using 2 or 3 G. Just Wi-Fi. So I'm thinking that If I can disable things that I'm not going to use at all I can boot the Battery time up for a few extra minutes. I also need to see if I can disable the GPS because I'm not going to really use it since the only reason I would have Wi-Fi on is to Upgrade or Download an app, even then I presume I could just connect the Note to a computer and get the same thing done that way. All this is presuming that I can do these things.
The main power drain for my expected uses would be from the screen and this amazing Exynos chipset I keep reading about. Otherwise Ill just turn the screen off and listen to my music.

Edit:Well I have been peruseing this forum I have noted some things. There is no dedicated post for newer individuals... fortunately I found a video about What a Root is (which I essentially knew already). I see all this talk about Roms and can't help but feel a little overwhelmed. There are so MANY of them...whatever they are. I also keep reading about USBs and SD cards - Kernels and Flashing. I have looked at the wiki but I find my self still not comprehending what all this is about. Sense its my intent to mod the Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 to my likeing- I think it would be a good idea if I understood what I would be getting into before I jump in. I must be crazy - Looking before I leap!? Absurd!
Since I presume that when/If I root I am saying "So long" to the warranty, does this mean I can't get a Samsung Account? Ive looked around and I can't seem to find a Download to Odin - which I currently think is required to root the Sam-Note. I'm not complaining, but I have to say there is just so much here. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?
Will Rooting make my phone more susceptible to being Hijacked/Hacked /Virus?..so on. I presume its no, but security is nothing to play with. Does McAfee have an App? (That was a joke)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...

Can anyone make any recommendations for Chinese Android Flagship cell phones? Something with totally amazing Hardware that isn't skipping out on something? Like an octa-core phone or a Deca core phone with 4 gigs of RAM 64 gigs or better? With actual decent cameras an actual decent speakers. Not lacking in anything. Like having the full array of sensors. Fingerprint reader. Etc. Great benchmark scores. No bizarre gotchas.
I want to try one of the Chinese phones. Something that might be available on AliExpress or gearbest or something like that? Maybe even from a Us warehouse? Maybe even something that you could actually even get a case or screen protector for? Maybe something that could load other ROMs... although I don't absolutely need the ability to load ROMs.
One with a great version of Android on it. Something with great battery life. Basically I want it all. But I'd like to try a Chinese flagship.
