Nokia 8 - Android Q - Nokia 8 Questions & Answers

Any hint of a beta of Android Q for the Nokia 8 or is this the end of the line for this phone?
Disappointing that the bootloader was locked for so long. It just put developers right off developing for this phone.

HMD is not communicating with us, and actually was never good at this, so I assume we won't get Q.
And even if we somehow get Q, they will announce it as soon as Q will be officially released by Google.
And even if we really gonna get it, then don't get your hopes too high, it will be like Q2 2020.
So either be extremely patient, or abandon ship.
And after the compass issue that needed almost half a year to fix, I don't even care if we get it.

Totally agree. It's OnePlus7 for me.

Update Delayed! :-(

Sorry guys, you might know this already but the update for WP7 have been delayed and I have a feeling it's going to be delayed even further (because the carriers may want to do their thing with it too).
They're now saying it's AT LEAST a month away, maybe more, due to CDMA compatibility.
Source: http://wmpoweruser.com/two-windows-phone-7-updates-coming-before-mid-year/
The update may be just around the corner. I saw a knowledgde base article for troubleshooting the update process.
Here check it out.

Truthfully, the part that pisses me off is the lack of providing any real date or time frame at all. It seems to me that most of this (when the update is coming) is speculation based on really good guesses and small hints people find. And MSFT thinks it's ok to just leave us lingering and guessing while all the while, people continue to talk more crap about how they've done a terrible job thus far (even thought I don't feel totally that way). The only way I see this being ok is if I plug in my phone after typing this message and all of a sudden I see an update is available today Doubt it though

I don't mean to be a buzzkill but I don't think that's a good indication that the update is coming soon. "just around the corner" is also subjective to some that may mean in a week, to others that may mean in a few months.
For me I wish the update was here already.
WP7 takes some getting used to, but I've given my EVO and Nexus a much needed rest. I grew to absolutely love the interface on WP7! It's so fluid, and the performance is so consistent, I've yet to see my HD7 slow down at all.
The first update is supposed to bring a lot of change and I'm really anxious see how MS does, because this will be an solid indication of how serious they take WP7 which seems to be pretty serious. We'll see though.

I think we will see the update during the MWC in Feb 2011... I was trying to be positive about it by believing that it will be coming out in Jan 2011.... I do miss the multitasking now and then also the cut and paste few times in past few months... But not a big thing, however I will like to see the battery improvements and camera update also the performance upgrade from the best windows os we currently have....
I was expecting also to see some evolution during January but I now I really believe that a more realistic approach is to expect to have nice upgrade during Q1, maybe March.

[RIP] OnePlus 3

Just going to leave this here.
http://www.androidauthority.com/oneplus-3-officially-discontinued-us-europe-729580/
If this is indeed true how long will OnePlus continue to support and develop for a device they no longer sell?
And I really hope this is not true.
They already confirmed that both phones will be on the same schedule regarding updates.
Yup, here's the article:

Time will tell on this one.
It will be very interesting to see what path OP take now, they are sending out very mixed messages about the OP3 and this is not good at all.
I don't care if I cannot buy the phone anymore as long as they support it and develop for it as if it's STILL their flagship phone.
It's OnePlus don't expect any miracles, I love the device but so many draw backs within the company, software etc... makes me look past the pricing and should just stay with Pixel no compromises, OTA + Source on time no bs, My first and last OP device
Well considering the two devices are really similar and i don't think the development on s820/s821 is that different, the support will not die. OP knows OP3 is a successful phone and abandoning it within few months will mean they have lost valuable customers. OP 3T is a ****ty move from them, no doubt, and they have lost me as a customer for sure.

Coming from a developer (you make the no-root CM version, right?) does that mean you don't think community development will continue as is has before?

It will continue but it still needs OP to release the source code in a timely fashion, to update the blobs for the hardware to better support the camera, graphics, cpu and my concerns are despite what they say support will dry up it's just a matter of when.

They are different enough to annoy some very well known dev's such as flar2 who develops elementalx and boeffla who develops kernels also for cm13/14/oos.
If the dev's say they will no longer purchase a oneplus then that's 2 or 3 or even more who will leave for pixel or other devices.
It's the first time for me, a manufacturer is reasoning an upgrade with high demand and getting parts faster to produce more devices... Especially as they were saying that the display was the troublemaker... Not the SoC, not the battery and not the front camera...
Dont think so, the oneplus 3 gets Support the whole Street.
Question is only what the Developers will do, will they leave for the op3t or will they stay. Think they could stay and Release there Kernels for the op3t also. Should be not so much difference or?
Can we cry right now?
Ye only if you don't have op3 yet
Devs here are to good to cry man
i dont see any point to cry. the support of every device ends somewhen, this isnt anything new right?
and as its said that updates for OP3 come along with updates for OP3T, the release of the OP3T basically changed nothing.
you can also say "RIP Phone X" as soon as its released because you know "Phone X 2" will come soon or later and the company will focus more on that new one.
so sorry but the title of this thread "[RIP] OnePlus 3" is nothing more than panicmongering without any base.

Not when the device is replaced after 4 months... Plus they haven't been sticking to their software update timeline still waiting for last months Stable OTA (I guess working on official N) and mostly source code is delayed already which is angering devs that want to work on this device meaning even more delays now they working on the 3T. Really ****ty move by 1+..

If it's so than i never buying op phone ever again
I can't believe the butthurt going on.
I've had android phones for long enough now, including a few Chinese ones too. Buying any phone other than a Nexus/Pixel is a gamble when it comes to updates.
Buy a phone for how it is NOW, as it is now the OP3 works great. It's getting android N too. If they ended it with just android N I'm classing it as a win! Anything after that is a bonus.
And I can't wait for all the crying when they release the OP4 and people are saying "My OP3T is obsolete after only 5 months" and "Am I getting a refund I've been robbed because you released a new phone without telling me".
I've owned phones from HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei, ZTE and more than I can remember.

I was hoping they would do a scheme like apple early upgrade where you pay for it over 11 months then get a new phone on the 12th but hey no dice, shame really as I would never part with that much money for a phone if I had to buy it out right.

Yes it is funny, that 5% of people that probably have branded phone cry all the time that they didnt get update, where everyone else have it...
Its annoying that minority make so much noise about it that for people who watch that from side its look like its some major problem, where in reality its just small group of people who didnt get that update because of their region or branding...
Also, again, to everyone who cry about updates: GET A LIFE. Update will not make your phone super-mega-ultra better, its juts a bigger number in phone info and few random UI features... What do you expect from updating your phone? You could have damn 4.0 in it that just look like 7.0 and you would not notice difference...

Simple statistic math system: look for posts of people who have and dont have update, and to make it better, look for other forums too. It should took you about 10-15min because of magic of search engines(obviously use key words to speed it up). Or if you check such forums often you will get overall idea of how many people whine that they dont have update and people who say that they have.
And because of standard statistic reasoning that most of companies use, one person typically have the same opinion as 3-5 others people in group, so we round it up to some nice number(you should easily have 100 person that posted if they have/dont have update), and after that you will get that only about 5-15% of them dont have update, and biggest part of them didnt get it because they have branded device or live in specific region where even other companies dont push update so fast.
Of course statistics are statistics. They say only half of truth, but they give you basic idea of something without checking whole group, like for example group of people that own P9.
Also you can take in to the account Official Google statistics regarding Android:
https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html
And as you see here, only 8.9% of users have nougat on their devices.... it just prove that Huawei is not that bad at pushing updates, its just common problem with Android update system that google literally F### up at the beginning and didnt fix it for all those years(read: separating system components) :]
All the stats in the world aren't going to change the fact that it sucks, that despite promises of a "global" roll-out by the end of Q1 there are still 15% of us (according to your statistic) that didn't get the update.
If your company promised everyone bonus pay and in the end 15% of you didn't get it, you'd think that sucks too.
I've given up hope of receiving the update, seeing as the P10's been out for a few months already. And that sucks even more, because that means my Huawei "flagship" didn't even get ONE major Android update. And even though EMUI 4.1 is all right, there were a few features and improvements in EMUI 5.0 I was looking forward to.

So we should bash company because minority didnt get update, mostly because they have branded phone?
I got all updates that they roll out. And when you look at other brands and their update policy you will see that all companies promise fast updates and then for most of time they need to wait, OR WORST, they get that update but its bugged as hell and they need to wait even more to fix those bugs.
Also as I said, what do you really expect from those updates? Your phone doesnt work? it lack some features?
Because I had lots of devices, and Huawei P9 is not different here: new updates doesnt change much. More battery? More power? Nope. Most of people that say such thing say that because of clean install or lack of proper comparison(read: placebo).
All you will get is few random changes in UI that doesnt really matter in everyday usage and... thats it. Rest is just "something on changelog that you dont see anyway"
I'm not bashing anything.
You received all the updates and you think nothing important's been changed. Great for you. All I'm saying is: it's not up to you to decide what should or shouldn't be important for other people.
Some of the UI changes in EMUI 5.0 would make a difference to me in my daily use of the phone. But that's probably never going to happen. So yes, regardless of what you say: the fact that we still don't have an update sucks.
It's a flagship device. Very expensive device. And I still can't get the latest firmware update after 10 months of Nougat availability. They are completely incompetent if you admit it or not. It's embarrassing. This is my first and last phone from Huawei.
I think it's reasonable for owners of a machine that cost them the upper side of $500 to at least feel like the company respects them and is appreciative of their business.
You're right - updates aren't all that - however, they DO allow it's owners to feel connected to their devices, and foster the feeling that, yes, indeed, the machine was worth buying.
This is really the difference between Android and Apple and it does not help to excuse Android OEMs.
An update to 7.0 is not the same as an update within a particular series - it's a step upgrade to the current OS.
I also get upset with the constant whining for updates, however, it is reasonable, in JUNE for the Mate 9 owner to expect an update to Nougat.... And certainly to complain LOUDLY for not having received it. O is around the corner.
For Huawei and for the Mate 9, it's not too much to ask, PARTICULARLY when there are Mate 9s around the world that received updates half a year ago.
Let them complain is all I'm saying. People come here to feel like they've at least been heard. I know the frustration and sometimes just coming here and saying it, helps.
But also, really, if you had an update last month, don't come in and talk about how you'll 'never buy it again' because b300 has been out for at least two weeks, you've seen it, and the updates suck, you'll check again tonight and let us all know tomorrow. It cheapens the experience of an excellent phone and the hard work of the people behind it.
For those who haven't received the update, I'm sorry, I feel you, just remember you have a great, great phone - don't let the S8s and OnePlus's fool you, nor allow the lack of updates to degrade your enjoyment of the phone. The update will come, don't worry.
P.S. OMG - I've posted in the wrong topic...I thought this was Mate 9!! Oooops.
Why bash Huawei for it? In the case where providers didn't roll out the update, it is their fault, not Huawei's...
The update will come, don't worry. - Well no update since september 2016 when it comes to Vodafone Huawei P9, they keep saying they have not received the firmware from Huawei yet. Which means it's up to huawei to send the firmware to Vodafone for testing.
I bet most people debrand and update to nougat when their service provider seems to never be able to release an nougat firmware update because of huawei not giving it to them for testing. It should of been released months ago like a normal flagship phone.
I don't want Nougat anyway. All the builds I have used so far have been gash.
Quite happy on MM.
my advice is contact your local huawei support. I did a few weeks ago to be told that they have no intention of releasing the update in New Zealand to the p9 lite, and that they basically stopped supporting it in NZ last septemeber. This includes not patching the trustzone vulnerability. Have been working with the place I brought it from to get a refund

I agree, I got the P9 under EE... I couldn't believe no upgrade to nougat, and yes there is a big difference in the way new OS works with the phone... and the UI improvements help a lot in day to day usage of phone compared the crappy huawei marshmallow version... (very narrow minded of others to say you won't get any improvements..you do, I experienced the obvious difference!) .
I decided I wouldn't wait for the upgrade when I knew it was out... So I very very painfully upgraded the phone to nougat by spending stupid amounts of hours gaining knowledge. At the end I felt I got a new phone as responsiveness improved and the new emui 5 nougat OS was so much better and more usable. (fixed a lot of bugs)
So I feel for a lot of people who spend money to get flagship phones that never see the light of day with any upgrades/security patches, feels like we are cheated... Never owned (or will ever own) any apple ? IPhones but the OS ecosystem is rock solid... I wish the new OS version of Android that separates core OS from providers helps improve this.
Piece!
1 month and 7 days later - still nothing.
I wouldnt worry about the 7 builds either, battery life is as good as halved.
Is it really? Why the issue? Are you sure its not the battery stats that need to re establish after a mjor upgrade?

I thought this too but since updating to b386 directly (skipped 361) battery life is far better than on MM. Been browsing Reddit and Facebook n WiFi for 2hr 44min and still have 71% battery left.

Samsung :highfive:

I think they somehow made bootloader partition read only or something.and our devices cant be revived with any tool at the moment.im really mad for this nonsense.i even mailled them, write on reddit but no ones care untill their device is broken too

Well, you are not supposed to flash unapproved firmwares, so Huawei isn't responsible for that.
And complaining to them about that, would most likely do more damage than good.
When we unlock the bootloader and install stuff like that, we have to assume the risk and responsibility.
I know that in some cases, they replaced the device under warranty, but i doubt that those users told Huawei the whole story! ?
I will sell my Mate in few days.

This. Exactly.
Well... Wrong... I owned the following devices : LG G2, LG G3, LG G4, HTC 10, Galaxy S7, Oneplus 3T, Galaxy S8 and now Mate 10 Pro. I can say that exept the camera this is by far the best phone yet. LG and Samsung are far behind with updates, HTC just simply sucks, OnePlus sucks on support and accesories (in East Europe at least). Battery life on this phone is just amazing, screen quality ok, call quality ok, build quality ok, updates better than Samsung or LG. In my opinion all phones are crap and all have bugs or problems.

I agree 100%, everyone has ups and downs, however Mate 10 definitely made an impact as my daily driver, I used Sony, Samsung, and iPhone in the past and got frustrated with limitation in daily use --- battery and usability.
This is likely my first and last Huawei phone unless they change the way updates are delivered. Maybe Googles Android P Mandate will make Huawei change the way they deliver updates requiring monthly security updates.
As a daily driver it is a great phone. The support is the only thing keeping it down. Face Unlock took way too long to come out for a flagship phone. Lesser phones getting Higher Android versions are also concerning.
Nokia is showing their care very much about support on their phones. And they are on the top of my list for my next phone.

You two are against the grain of this board
I've even seen a poster saying that his S5 took far better pictures than the mate 10
I've been on xda since I first flashed my Samsung omnia in 2008... And this mate 10 board is truly something different to me
I'm happy with my Mate 10 (non pro)... The ai stabilization night shot is already on FF for the Chinese mate 10... So hopefully we get it in a month or two
Btw
I have a C605 mate 10
And a C636 mate 9
Never had any issues getting updates
And now it seems that you get access the update through the stock updater as soon as it's approved
My only real complaints are that:
Even at beauty = 0.. there's still something going on... However it's not a deal breaker
I wish all brands used the OnePlus method of delivering updates... So that a free VPN would be all you need to trigger the update
If Huawei won't realise the official blobs.. then I can do without the bootloader unlock for now
Devs are mostly on snapdragon devices
I actually bought the mi mix 2 so that I could install custom ROMs (cheapest snapdragon 835 I could find).... But the phone is sooooo smooth... That I just installed Nova launcher and I have been using it like that
Smoothest Android device that I've ever used
Edit:
Added screenshot of 5.31.18 Chinese mate 10 changeling from FF
Is this a joke? This subforum is just laughable, I usually lurk here for anything new and interesting, instead however I see most of the time is someone complaining about the phone not getting timely updates, "ugh, this is my last Huawei phone" "I hate how slow these updates are rolling out compare to others" "Where is my update, and why does this _____ region have this update but I dont?"
THIS is all I see here being posted whether its a new post or someone making comments on an already existing post. What has this turned into? "Lets complain about Huawei and crappy their support is subforum"?
Like the dude above me, I have been here since 2008 and this is by far probably on par with the Mate 9 subforum here on XDA the worst. No offense but damn!
You want updates in a timely manner? Get a Pixel
You want extensive ROM/Kernel developement with big support? Get a Snapdragon phone.
Simple as that, yeah sucks Huawei is going to shut down its bootloader unlocking service but thats reality and it might be for the better anyways. Yes this is XDA risk are taken but...(Think from Huawei's stand point)
Honestly I could CARE LESS about it. These phones were excellent from the start, I have no complaints whatsoever. Huawei out did themselves in terms of delivering a phone for performance and battery out of the box both 10s and the 9.
I see this more as a daily driver phone, not a phone a flash junkie can have fun with. People making threats saying "Oh im switching out for this _____ phone because of the amount of support and updates it gets" or "I regret getting this phone, support and updates are horrible" Um ok? Cool man as if that'll make a change anywhere, my thing is this, why cant people enjoy the phone as it stands out of the box?
Face unlock update? Dont care about it as much, if I receive it cool.
Not trying to offend everyone here, only those that seem to be impatient and think that we should be getting the latest updates in such quick time frame. Yeah yeah sure you paid premium prices and you expect the world? Not every company is the same, should have done your research if youre really after custom ROM development
Even SD device ain't a guarantee that you'll have community room support, just look at Sony. It is what it is. I bought this device cuz of battery and big amoled screen(un notched) and Huawei delivered. Yeah it got it's flaws but every phone has. As long they don't override pros it's a good purchase....and I'll sure be looking into Mate 20 if they keep the same philosophy as with predecessors.
Limited ROMS on this device and they wanted to lock the bootloader for good. Lol, I'm about to do a clean swap for Oneplus5t, think it will be worth it?

It's trash! I bought a Note 4, years ago and I don't use it, because CyanogenMod was not ready. Samsung is today much better but still trash.
If somebody ask me now "yo, get Lineage OS but lose warranty?" I will instant flash Lineage OS, because EMUI is just a copy of the old MIUI, with bug's and ugly interface.
So, in future no more Huawei, just Xiaomi, Android One (Nokia) and OnePlus. Pixel never, because no dual SIM.

Is it true that the Global versions of the phone will not get anymore updates?

I was randomly browsing youtube when I suddenly felt the urge to search for this device however, with a filter to only get videos posted in the past 24 hours.
And I found this particular video which caught my attention immediately.
I watched it and within the first minute, my e-boner died. Apparently, this user contacted the support from Nubia who confirmed that the Global versions won't get anymore updates, like literally none. Not even security updates, let alone major patches.
I'm shocked and curious if anybody else knows anything else about this. I mean... those security patches mean a lot and I was expecting a minimum of guaranteed android Q update in the future. Yet... apparently the phone is practically dead, unless you force punch the chinese ROM down it's throat.
Can anybody confirm any of this? For me it would be a 100% deal breaker.
First, they completely cut off whatever piece of software they were using for the phone and gave us a very stock feel/look with cut down features and abilities. Now this? Nubia come on.
Don't worry about updates. You are worrying about a guy who spoke to a CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. Those people are paid hourly wages and don't know ANYTHING about when or if devices will get updates. Relax and enjoy this awesome phone.
Hi,
Given the past of ZTE/Nubia, I would not put too high expectations on updates.
Maybe we will have 2 or 3 updates in the phones lifetime.
But I would expect a major update like to Android Q (I am pretty sure this will not happen).
There's no secret : to release a device with those features at that price and with all bonuses (earphones + USB-C cable + external battery + joystick) they ahve to save some expenses. Where do they make those savings ?
Yeah, you guessed correctly : in support.
So ask a question to customer support => 3 days to get an answer to a really simple question.
And of course support of software : non existent. Probably made by interns but in no way some pros working there... If there were, they would never have released this totaly useless global software...
As far as I am concerned : the device is used only for GPS guiding when I am on the way. But for nothing else... That makes a 480€ GPS. Probably the most expensive device I've ever had...
Jesus. So the basic global software is so... basic that it fully cancels out it's usability?
Have you considered going through the pain of flashing the chinese ROM?
It's really worrying to see that there are quite a few people stating that this device might not see more than 3 to 4 software updates in it's life. It's fascinating to see that the device is in fact not really a priority...

I dont know what people have but the global rom is okay, i have no Bugs, battery lifetime is good and so on.
I totally agree with the previous poster.
I'm on global, which is basically Vanilla Android Pie.
The phone is smooth as butter and I have about 11 hours of SOT time.
Yes, at the moment it doesn't have Dark mode and the themes engine. I'm sure it will receive these soon.
I don't care about updates at the moment, will see about that in the future.
But I can assure you that at the moment global is quite ok.
