I have aTotal Wireless plan on my rooted Galaxy S4 SCH-I545 with OF1 build, and have lots of extra data every month on a shared plan. Want to be able to use as mobile hotspot when needed, but when I go to enable it I get a popup that says "Unable to Connect. Mobile number not found." Is this an issue related to Total or can I mod my phone to get around this?

I am trying to figure out how to make "wireless tethering" between 2 Android phones work. Is it possible? I can't find any info on it.
I have a Captivate with an Unlimited Dataplan and a Captivate without a Dataplan. The one WITHOUT the Dataplan is on AT&T's $50 Unlimited Talk, Text & Web Plan (Prepaid). The Talk and Text work just fine but the internet does not unless I pay for a separate package. I was wanting to use my Rooted Captivated with the Unlimited Dataplan to broadcast my internet over to the other phone when nearby. We don't have Wifi at home. I use the Wireless Tether apk all the time for a laptop, but for some reason the other phone can't see the signal. Any help would be appreciated!
Put a rom that includes mobile ap on the phone with the unlimited data plan, create a hot spot with it, and connect the other phone to it with wifi.
I haven't done any Custom Rom Flashing yet. I was just wondering if it is possible to do it with an App like Wireless Tether apk.
There are instructions on how go fix this around it involves removing tge wirelesstether apk i did it on my stock rom and works great

I have the AT&T Galaxy S5 rooted via towelroot. I have tried several tether options, and all I have successfully gotten to work is pdanet through usb tether, and the limit pdanet imposes is not acceptable to me so I need to find an alternative. I would prefer a wifi tether method. If I try to enable the stock wifi or usb tether I receive the classic (To enable mobile hotspot on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611) message. The wifi methods I have tried but not limited to are FoxFi, WiFi Tether-TrevE Mod, Open Garden WiFi Tether, and Barnacle Wifi Tether. With every thing I have tried, I always receive an error that varies with the app. I am open to pretty much anything, I just need clear instructions if it involves changing system files. I will really appreciate the help
I recently changed over to a mobile share value plan with at&t. Not only did my bill go down quite a bit, but the package also includes tethering. That being said, i believe foxfi works for tethering.

Check out the Wifi provisioning bypass thread under GS5 General forum. That method worked fine for me.
Could you point me too the WiFi provisioning bypass thread please. I searched for it under general and could not find it, thanks

After being guided in a different direction by STraver (Thank You) I have finally figured out a solution. The thread STraver referred to is actually titled "Wifi-Tethering Provision Bypass" which is why I didn't find it at first. In my renewed search I ran across several different methods, 2 of which required me to flash a zip in recovery. Both times the zip did not agree with my phone, it looked as if the code failed and then repeated in a continuous loop, my phones solution to the issue both times was to trigger a factory reset. I finally decided to go with this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2791938 which did the trick for me. I only strayed from one step,
Step 2:
Open Titanium Backup and find TetheringProvision 4.06.72
Press the App and select 'Freeze !'
Instead of purchasing Titanium Backup to freeze TetheringProvision, I got a free app from the playstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ramdroid.appquarantine&hl=en and it did a great job at freezing TetheringProvision. For instructions solely concerning Xposed, I reviewed post #4 of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787606
This is what worked for me, and I can now freely use the native built-in wifi and usb tethering.
Can anyone confirm for me that their AT&T Note 5 mobile hotspot option is working. I can't seem to get mine to work and I'm starting to believe that the phone is defective. I set a new password, have it set for 2.4 ghz, WPA2 PSK. I have tried to connect several devices and have been unable to do so.
Thanks
Do You pay for that feature $10.00 per month to AT&T? If not, it probably will not work by default.

It's included in the AT&T mobile share plans. They've verified that it is on the account.

Okay I finally figured it out....all I had to do was select "allow ALL devices to connect" instead of "ALLOWED devices only" under the mobile hotspot settings...I thought this would open up the connection and allow any device to connect WITHOUT a password but I was wrong. All set and working now...
Hello Everyone.
I am using a VPN and the Wifi Tether Router paid app from the market. I am curious as to how T-mobile still knows I am tethering, as I just got a "You used 80% of your High speed data" text from them (Have unlimited data plan)
Any ideas on how to completely hide? SSL? Proxy? Only seem to have issues with the Playstation and not the PC....
Any help appreciated...
The PS4 data probably shows up different on the network than PC data. I've read that T-Mobile put some new things in place on their end to identify data usage being masked.

I saw similar results. I noticed that when I tether, it doesn't route me through my openVPN connection regardless of the tethering method I use. You can test this on your own, fire up the vpn, then tether to your PC, then go check the external IP on your PC.
You'll most likely need a non-stock ROM for it to work. The ROM probably reports all MACs and the traffic passing through it to T-MO.

Hey guys,
Is it possible to enable tethering without root? When I use the native tethering it just pops up a message that says to go to att.com/mywireless (but there are no options to turn it on there)?
Thanks guys, I need this functionality for work.
I'm on the 15 gig shared data plan and my tethering in available with out root I used to need root but when I changed to this plan it was no longer needed not sure if that was what made it available on my phone or something else. I will check the other phones on the plan and see if they also have tether available and let you know.

Hey, I have the unlimited data plan that comes bundled with direct tv, which I called and does not support tethering. they said I'd have to change to a non-unlimited plan that supports tethering, or get another device that has a data plan that has tethering, but the cheapest plan is 40 dollars a month for 2 gb of data. Does anyone know a way to root the phone (can send me a link) so that I can keep my unlimited plan and still tether? Or know some other option that allows me to keep my unlimited plan and still tether? Thanks!
Not sure of the status of them, but try out PdaNet and FoxFi ... The latter has been removed from the play store by sprint and at&t, but you can find the url in the FoxFi Addon description.
[edit]
Confirmed, pdanet is still a thing. One of the few apps I truly found worth what I paid for it.
Links and details
Tethering is part of the mobile share data plan.

This app works perfectly!! Thank you, NOTHING else works with AT&T's new unlimited plan except for this.
I can confirm Foxfi/PdaNet works via usb, without root. Install Foxfi (paid full version) on your phone and have PDAnet on your pc and attach via usb.

Hi
I am new and I have a question and a answer which probably is not the one you are looking for but you have to start some where to learn like you and me. My question is what is tethering without root. As for tethering I go to settings- connections- mobile hot spot and tethering and turn it on. Hope you don't mind a first day rookie bothering you and hope we can become friends here. Take care.
Someone correct me if I am wrong but rooting your phone will enable full tethering on this new unlimited data deal but it can be detected by att and in some cases att will automatically add a tethering fee to your bill if detected. However it's extremely hard to detect Android phones (and more expensive) so generally att pursues this more on Apple platforms. Just wanted to confirm my own understanding before I switch plans. If true, it's a win win for this community.

no root yet for the s6 active. but anyone interested in tethering i found a work around. dowload klink tether from playstore to run your laptop no root required. the app has simple intructions to get you going. once you have that all done now you can download a hotspot program on your laptop. i use connectify turns it into a hotsot so you will actualy be connecting to the laptop wich is running from your phone works fine. now you have free wireless tether. if anyone noes a easier tether option i would like to no foxfi didnt work for me as it did on other devices im currently running marshmellow on the s6 active
