Note 8 as HOTSPOT (Mifi) only, tasker support - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi,
I currently use a MIFI for my internet when out with work, this has my laptop connected to it along with mobile printer and mobile phone. The existing mifi is connected to a GiNET GL-MT300 router that is in repeater mode, the GiNet is setup with openVPN configuration back to the office, the devices when outside office connect to the GiNET (back to office via the VPN)
My question is, I have a spare NOTE 8 mobile phone, i was wondering if this would be a better alternative to use that as a HOTSPOT only device, no calls would be taken on it and number used for data only.
This gives me the advantage of tasker installed on the note 8, set to give messages via text to my mobile when battery is at a certain %. Plus also the ability to turn off the HOTSPOT when within range of the office, as i keep forgetting to turn the mifi off when in the office WIfi range. I can root the note 8 to allow more flexibility.
Plus any other cool stuff you can think off.

Can I hide what I'm tethering on Windows Phone

I have an iphone and a tether plan of 3 GB with T-mobile. I have added some patched carrier updates that allow pretty much any "mobile" traffic to tether for free, so I can tether android phones, android tablets, iphones, ipods, ipads, windows tablets (IE or user agent IE) etc.
Is there anyway I can hide it on Windows Phone without it counting against the 3 GB limit? Was looking at getting a Lumia 925 and selling my iphone if I could. I don't use too much data maybe 10 GB a month about half is from tethering other mobile devices. I just don't want to be blocked from tethering when I hit the cap.
Wired tethering doesn't seem to get tracked correctly, but it's also completely unofficial and requires some wrangling to set up (plus you need a PC with a USB port for the wire to connect to, though the PC can then broadcast a WiFi network for other mobile devices). There's an app in the store (tether-x) which can create a SOCKS proxy that your other devices can use, assuming they can set WiFi proxies. This isn't perfect, as some traffic won't get proxied and therefore either won't go at all or will go over the "real" tethered connection, but the proxied traffic such as web browsing and most apps will appear to be coming from the phone just like normal phone traffic.
VPN???

[Q] Tethering without my carrier knowing

I have a Samsung Ativ S which I have been using as a WiFi hotspot to connect my laptop and Nexus 7 to while I am working away. Recently got a text to tell me if I carry on I will be cut off on my mobile contract. I have a sim only deal that gives me unlimited calls, text and 3G internet so I'm a bit brassed off. It took an hour of searching to find the no teathering in the conditions of use.
Any way what I want to know are there any Windows Phone apps that will hide the teathering from my supplier? I am hung off a T Mobile/ Orange network.
Daedalus1
ATIV S can use wired tethering (search the forum for it, I posted instructions and drivers sometime last year). Even though my plan supports tethering, it's data-limited and when I use the wired tethering they don't list the data usage for it so I'm guessing it's not detectable, or at least not easily.
There's also an app called TetherX or something like that, which will act as a SOCKS proxy server on the phone; you then set your PC to use the phone as its proxy server. Won't work for non-proxy-aware apps but otherwise should do the trick.
Of course, this all assumes they're checking whether or not you're using the phone's tethering feature somehow, rather than doing something more nefarious like deep packet inspection. If they're checking "are you using the 'Internet Sharing' feature?" then I would expect them to just limit its usage; the phone has the capability to test whether or not tethering is permitted on your plan, and does so test by default. If they're using DPI and noticing traffic to/from PC clients (based on user-agent strings or something) then you're in trouble unless you can route all your traffic over SSL, which mostly thwarts packet inspection.

Setting up chromecast without WiFi

So I'm in the army right now, which means there's a TV but no WiFi available.
I did think of just setting up a Hotspot with another phone but it gets pretty annoying having to have 2 people at all time.
So I went digging in the Internet and found someone at a random forum (can't find it now for credit..), that said that If you set up the Hotspot in your own phone and configure it with another one you don't need the other one around anymore - being the Hotspot works as being connected to it.
Now I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be any reason I couldn't set it up on my own phone (the hotspot), except the Google home app just demands I connect to the WiFi network, which I can't do because you can't connect to yourself sadly.
I think if someone made some changes to the Google home app, or made an alternative set up app it could work. I have no idea how to code an app, so I came here ?
tl:dr I Want an app that does the same as the home app for setting chromecast up, but without checking if I'm connected to a WiFi network. (I think)
I'm guessing that you have no WiFi but you do have a hard line internet connection?
The only issue with what I'm going to suggest is that base rules may prohibit creating a WiFi access point on any of their hardline connections.
But the best solution for you is to buy a Portable Router (see posts here about using CCast in a Hotel).
It's a small box about the size of a DC transformer that plugs into the outlet and also any Network to create a small footprint WiFi access point.
I suggest looking for a model that also has Repeater mode that allows it to connect to another WiFi access point to create your own private network as opposed to a hard line.
It is probably the best way to use a CCast in places where WiFi is not available without having to play with Phone Hotspot which doesn't always work due to the fact the hotspot can't control the CCast in that mode.
The other Option that is most likely to be allowed is to add a WiFi puck to your Mobile account. Then there would be no potential compromising of the Military network (which is why they might not allow the Portable Router to be used) and you would no longer need two phones to run the CCast.
CCast definitely needs Internet so that Puck might be the safest and best way forward for you.
As for what you read...The issue is that if the Phone goes out of range it stops working.

Actually, no Internet at all, just mobile data, but since I got 15 gigs it's OK for me to use it.

To be honest, it is a good idea but my I was mainly wondering if I could solve it via software which is both easier obviously and also I just wanted to know if it's actually possible since I thought of it and I wanna know if I got it right

Not really...All the hacks and such that people try simply don't work well due to the fact that the Phone can't really connect to the same subnet as the Hotspot. When you go into Hotspot mode you can't also connect to that hotspot internally because WiFi is no longer available to the phone.

That's why i suggested tempering with the app so it treats being a Hotspot as if u were with WiFi on connected to one.
Basically take off the check for being connected to WiFi.

The issue isn't the app...It's the fact that the WiFi in your phone can only do one thing at a time....BE an Access Point or CONNECT to an access point.
It can't connect to itself as the radio can't do both things at once.
So when you go into hotspot there is no way to get on the same subnet as the hotspot with the phone.
Because there is no network adapter available to connect to it. It is too busy being an access point.
Basically going into hotspot turns the Phone into a router. A router the phone has no way to connect to. So you either need another device to connect to that phone router or find some other router with internet.
Which is what the Cellular Puck will give you.

Like I said, once the setup is done, being the Hotspot is just like being connected to is. The app still doesn't recognize you're connected but if you're on the web the chromecast icon does pop up when needed, all the third party apps do recognize you as being connected.
All you managed to do with Google Home (which can't be edited by anyone but Google)on the second phone is connect your CCast to the Phone Hotspot for it's Internet. There is no way to avoid that setup....HOWEVER...
As long as you don't set it up to connect to some other Hotspot there is no need to run Home again, Just turn on Hotspot and it should reconnect.
It will even remember the password,

Yea I know, but sometimes friends take it or something and it's a pain in the ass to explain everything, and even when I do it means I gotta reconnect at my end again which is annoying just thought someone could maybe find a solution that sounded really simple for me, guess not, too bad..
Thanks anyway!
Well trying to recode Home is a dead end....Android wouldn't even let you install it!
You guys should just chip in and buy the puck.
It will even let you use Tablets and Laptops as well as simplify the CCast use.
I know this is an older post; not sure if you are still interested. I read all the replies and not sure what to make of it as far as if anyone had a working solution or not. No disrespect to anyone, but I couldn't tell for sure so I'm posting a link to my solution which does work. The two important steps are included. One is using " other wifi" in the drop down list when searching for your hotspot. The second is enabling GUEST MODE.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/how-to-cast-screen-android-phone-to-t4032653
I’m trying something similar with a Chromecast 3rd gen and iPhone 5S (iOS 12). Main issue seems to be guest mode doesn’t work at all on any apps, and pretty much every solution i’ve seen to this results in guest mode being used for the eventual casting. If you have android or iOS 13 then ymmv.
The only solution i’ve found are workarounds, the obvious being
1) don’t buy a chromecast (it’s not much of a solution but hey it’s $30).
2) use a secondary device to cast.
3) use a tethered travel router, and this can be done with only a phone and mobile data for internet, but there’s a catch:
First i’d Recommend any router by GLi.net (cheapest “mango” router is about $20) as they support iOS and android and both WiFi and usb tethering.
Also, i’ve Tried using a WiFi hotspot on the phone, and it’s the same issue - no connection to the chromecast regardless of how. However... iPhones will allow you to create a hotspot using *only* cables usb tethering, so if you set the router up to *only* accept internet via cables tether (turn off WiFi/repeater tethering), then you can have both the chromecast and iPhone connect to the routers WiFi, whilst providing net access to the router (and WiFi network) from the same iphone’s mobile data via usb. Simple howoto:
Important: Turn OFF WiFi on the phone, and turn off hotspot.
Connect phone to router via usb, accept trust settings.
Turn on personal hotspot, you’ll get a message asking whether to use WiFi or just usb (andbluetooth if it’s also turned on). Select just usb/Bluetooth.
Wait until blue connection bar shows on phone (if not, make sure routers setup properly to gain net via usb tethering).
Now, turn on WiFi on the phone, and connect to routers WiFi.
Setup chromecast as normal, selecting to connect to routers WiFi too.
Note turning hotspot off and on again whilst WiFi is running will start a hotspot on WiFi and disconnect you from router WiFi, so you’ll always have to go through process of turning WiFi off, turn hotspot on, turn WiFi on.
So you can do this with the right router and a usb connection to phone. Or maybe android and working guest mode. Otheriwse, ...fire tv anyone?

Turn off WiFi "For Real"?

Long version:
-I am running a media server for my family (as well as NAS/printer/etc sharing) so I need an internet connection and WiFi on the server at all times.
-I live in an area where the internet is.... unreliable... going out for 15+ minutes on a near-monthly basis, and for shorter periods every few days.
-When I am in one of these long outages (and since nobody can use the internet they all want to watch content on the media server, which for some reason requires an internet connection to stream over the local network) I was planning to just USB/BT tether my Note9 to the server until the outage ended...
But...
Every time I tether it, in less than 15 minutes, often less than 5, despite me toggling WiFi to "Off" the phone has decided to turn wifi back on and reconnect to the network with no internet connection, terminating my cellular data session. WiFi tethering is not an option since I need the server to remain on the wifi network to serve media to... cantankerous... retired senior citizens who refuse to learn to download media themselves for offline viewing......
Tl;Dr:
How can I force the Note9 to stay on mobile data and not reconnect to WiFi untill I tell it to? (being a note9 it is, of course, Stock and un-rootable)
Try with mobile data always active under Developer options

That's the one! Also change location settings so that it doesn't use wifi for location tracking, because that will also turn on wifi if it's set to use the chip.
Thank you, I didn't realize that the Note9 actually kept track of where I use Wifi like that - when the wifi works that's actually a great feature to save battery when I'm away from home/work (I'll have to see if there's a program to make a quick-toggle)

Question Connect Phone to his own tethered network

Hi !
I have a S21 Ultra, and use it as a modem for my house with wifi tethering.
I can access my printer with my computer on this wifi network
But here is the problem : I can't access the device on this network from my phone.
I can't print from my phone,
I can't use app mirroring on Windows (open samsung flagship apps on W10 computer) because both S21 and computer have to be on the same wifi network.
Is there any way to make the phone part of his own wifi tethering ? Or workaround ?
Thanks !
no what your trying to do is hack someones phone....its not gonna happen!!!!

Don't understand your message... It's my own phone that doesn't detect itself in the wifi network list. I have no problem to connect network from one phone onto another. It is on the same phone, both emitter and receiver

I think you can try to make a hotspot on the PC and share wifi (from the phone) to the PC hotspot and connect the printer itself to the PC hotspot
Tethering is like connecting a modem to a device. Hotspot is creating a local wifi network for devices to connect to.
Tethering vs Hotspot: Difference and Comparison
Tethering allows a device to share its internet connection with other devices via a physical connection (such as USB), while a hotspot creates a Wi-Fi network to share the device's internet connection wirelessly.
askanydifference.com
Based on your description you are creating a hotspot on the phone that the laptop and printer connect to? If so then the phone cannot "join" that network as the wifi stack in the phone is being used to run a network and the phone has access to the mobile data network the wifi is representing.
No, only the computer connects to the phone.
but create a second hotspot on the computer that connects the printer to the computer

Your phone wifi module can either act as a broadcaster or receiver at a time, but not both. It will only handle one wifi network at a time, either the one it's broadcasting (endogenous mobile hotspot) or the one it's receiving (exogenous WiFi)
You can see this as a prompt when you turn on mobile hotspot. Whenever you turn on Wifi Hotspot, your WiFi will automatically get turned off. It will even display a notification and ask for your consent (at least mine does)

Wow! That's nice to hear. Haven't used that feature on a phone before. Didn't know it was doable. Well, I guess you learn something new everyday.
thats what hackers and LEA use.....smh
