When on LTE - heavy battery drain, overheating - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I have problems with my S10 Exynos (newest update ASG8 - 1 July 2019 but it doesn't really matter cuz it exists since I bought this phone around 2 months ago).
In particular when using LTE my battery drains so fast that it's horrible (today 1,5h SoT, 10h on battery). Additionally phone heats up, AccuBattery shows that battery temperature is around 40*C. It's really hot in hand and imo it shouldn't happen. When I turn on Wifi routing then it heats up even more.
Is it normal? Do you have simillar problems? Do you have some solution, workarounds?
I manage with this problem just by disabling LTE but it's no solution to me... I searched xda for similar problems, but only found problems with connection or range which don't happen to me (living in Warsaw, signal is strong).
If you have some thoughts about this, share it please.

Welcome
Welcome to the world of exynos

Have u try factory reset yet

No, I haven't. Do you had similar problem and got rid of it by doing factory reset?
Or you didn't have that problem and suggest this solution because it might help but no guarantee?
I am asking because 1st reply was "welcome to the world of exynos" and it really isn't comforting at all.
So my question is, do you have the same problem or it's just me?

I have the same problem with LTE draining battery, also S10 Exynos.
I get about 15% more battery usage if I disable LTE.
From South Africa, also good with good LTE Signal, but that does not help.
Been like this from day 1.

Rapid battery drain (under 7hrs)

Hi all,
over the last 2 weeks i have noticed my diamond getting pretty damn hot on random occasions and really chewing through the battery, i have run task manager when this occurs but no process is shown using alot of CPU.
I have read alot of threads on here descibing similar symptoms, some are just people who have wifi on or using CPU intensive applications, this i expect. But a few other users have described symptoms similar to mine where they are not using the phone and nothing appears to be running.
I am getting the problem with both my original HTC battery and the 3rd party spare i brought.
From reading the board the only definite cure seems to be a hard reset.
What im really after is any suggestions you people may have that can help me determin the actual cause of the problem, for example is their any software that will log CPU usuage over time or other diagnostic ideas.
thanks for your time
checking email regularly?

Maybe you might wanna check if you have the automatic mail checking feature on? Because I noticed that whenever I let my phone automatically look for email quite regularly (i.e. every 5 or 10 mins) it drains more battery then when you set it to check email every 2 hours for instance. Well that's what has helped in my case...hope this helps...
I have looked at my mail settings and my mail checks every 2 hours, i have had it set to 2 hours since i had the device (6 months) but this rapid battery drain has only started occuring in the last 2 weeks.
In that time i have not installed any new software, so am at a loose end as to the cause of the trouble
Hello,
I did had the same symptom : worked really good for 6 months (battery lasted for 30h +-) and in one time, battery was sucked out in 8 ! I did buy a new one (900mah) and it did the same. The only solution I find was to buy the 1350mah (htc) one and from this moment it last more than 2 days without any problem.
Also, I use G-light in place of the standard windows function and from this moment I really had a difference (from BatLog I went from 142mah to 123mah).
Hope it help (yeah I know: buying a bigger battery is not fun but for a device at this price, it's not so much...)

thanks for the feedback, i will order a new battery and give it a try, at the least it will prove if the problem is hardware or software related.
today my phone still has 63% battery since i removed it from charge at 11pm last night. The fact that the problem is intermittent is making it very dificult to diagnose.
Today I noticed my wi-fi drains battery as hell, it was lie 60%+ of battery down in less than 40 minutes. In the past it was like 40% max. The PowerGuard's current meter did not show anything alarming. So the problem seems to be hardware.
Already backed up and hard resetted. The phone is under warranty and so is battery; sending it to service to get it fixed.
Or, I missed something and I can fix it?
Hey,
Yeah I'm currently experiencing the same problem.. I tired just about everything from battery fix cab, radios, to roms. I even got the orginal extended battery. The battery worked really well for like 2 weeks and then it started to drain really fast as well.. My cousin have the same phone as me HTC Diamond, and his battery is verry good.. It can last a whole day with heavy usage no problem. Where as my 1340MAH battery would only lask for 14hrs max with heavy usage, and when we switch the battery same stuff happens... His battery on my phone drains quickly and mine last long on his phone...
So I came to the conclusion that it's definitely a hardware issue.
For those without battery problem, how much usage do you get out of a battery and what kind of things do you do with the phone? I'm just trying to gauge how bad my batter is. It will last about 8-9 hours, but that's with hald of that time spent on the internet on either 3g or edge. I've only had the phone for about a week so it's hard for me to compare it to anything else.
other little things like disabling autobacklight and disabling 3G will help as well.

One of the things you might want to check is if your phone is constantly trying to switch from 2g to 3g or HSPDA. This constant searching for a "faster" signal can make the phone quite hot and drain the battery quite quickly.
I had it on my diamond when I used to live at my old place as it was right on the edge of a 2g/HSPDA and the phone was constantly trying to get a decent HSPDA signal. The battery would last maybe half a day if I was lucky. Since moving to a decent 3g area, the battery now lasts me a good 2 days on nomal usage. This is with the original battery.

a good tip to save battery power which is something we all have to do, but i do not think its the cause of my new found rapid battery drain.
The last 6 moths i have been getting around a day to day and a half rom the the phone. now on random occasions ot will get real hot (like the gps/wifi is on or like the cpu is flat out) and the power goes in a few hours.
this is fine if its daytime and catch it but a few times its gone from 100% to 0% overnight and i have woken late for work.

interesting, i will leave the phone on 2G for the next few weeks and see if i experiance the rapid drain, maybe i am on the edge of a 2G 3G nexus, as i do get a fairly weak signal here (2 bars 3G and full bars 2G)
thanks for the suggestion

From you last sentance it does sound like it the 2g/3g switching that is cauing your problems.
i have this issue too.
my phone will drain ~5-7% every hour in standby. and when wifi is on it drains 2% every minute even staying on the home screen and me not doing anything on the phone.
from reading this thread, i can see that this is definitely not normal. looks like i'm headed for a dreaded hard reset...
Good day to all. At first sorry form my eanglish/
I have a same problem with diamond. It is overheating while charging at standby (battery temp. is about 50 C), and if it charges by USB, the battery temp is about 46 - 47 C. The phone's fly mode is switch on. HTC service couldn't answer me smth. But it says that same problem have 2 diamond from 1000, and only way to resolve problem is a change of mother board. in Russia it's about 250 euro.
And one more notice, which battery temp is 46 or 47 C, charging automaticaly switched off... Phone heating, but battery is not charging !!!
i've resolve problem...but don't know how i did it. I try to recharging stock acc. while 4 or 5 cicles, and today i have workable Diamond.
not discharge
not overheating
it's so strange, but it works

[Q] Verizon Moto X with AT&T sim battery drain?

So I've finally switched from VZW to AT&T on my XT1060. Data and everything works great, but I've noticed a considerable hit to battery life after popping in the new AT&T sim. Where I used to get a whole day's worth of battery (anywhere from 18-20 hours with about 3 hours SOT), I now maybe get 10-12 hours tops with barely 1.5 hours SOT. I wish I had screenshots to share, but I currently don't have any. I haven't noticed any wakelocks or abnormal app behavior, so I can't pinpoint the culprit. My only guess is an issue with the sim itself or something else. Does anyone have ideas or experienced anything similar?

Funny you mention this as I was about to make a similar post!
Same situation basically, took a VZW Moto x and as of a few days ago ported to Consumer Cellular (AT&T). Battery life has been terrible, though while nothing has changed program or application wise, my guess was more battery being used for the radio connection?
I need to review some battery stats and post some images, but today I had the phone on for 8 hours with about 1hr talk and 1 hour screen time and it's at 10%. this didn't happen last week!!
Need Gsam screen shots to help. Otherwise it's all guesses. ?
Get those and we can see. Fromm 100 to near dead is best before taking them.
Well I got the new Moto X for my birthday surprisingly, so this isn't an issue for me anymore. But, if you guys do find anything I am interested in knowing.
What is your signal like on AT&T if it's bad it can drain your battery much faster than when used on Verizon (if you signal is strong with them).
Got up this AM and left my phone on overnight to see the impact with no usage...

Not sure I get the Textra and calendar situation?
This is using Consumer Cellular on my VZW XT1060, perhaps I don;t have the correct GSM bands for my local towers?
Right now I'm getting a good HSPA+ signal(-89bdm) but I noticed the phone had switched network type from LTE/GSM/UMTS to Global the other day, perhaps that's a factor?!
Chip
Or perhaps more appropriate are today's results...
The radio interface kernel wakelock is the one hurting I think.... And that's usually due to a poor signal while on data. The 3 hours your were NOT on wifi, was your signal very low? If you can next charge, can you post your stock battery screen graph? If there's a lot if yellow or red in your bar for signal... While not on wifi.... That is likely your issue.
Nothing else in your screens looks out of place.
Darth,
I believe you are correct in that the signal it's finding (that the VZW DE supports) is a strain, I'm seeing a fair amount of yellow. I'll post an image.
I had hoped to be able to get some decent life out the VZE version of my X to warrant not having to buy a GSM version, looks like that might not happen!

n910c note 4 wifi battery drain bug or hardware issue, owners please contribute

I have noticed that the WiFi on my note 4 drains 30% of the phones battery on average and this exceeds the battery drain of the screen even with an SOT of 4 hours.
this is easily overlooked because the stock battery monitor does not show how much battery WiFi consumes. It only shows if its on or not. However the GSAM app will show it.
My phone is an n910c.
Smart network switch and WiFi scanning are both off. Phone is connected to a stable WiFi but when in the WiFi menu it shows that its scanning ever few seconds. this might be normal.
Attached are screenshots of battery consumption of WiFi and my settings.
Please post here if you have the same issue.
I find the GSAM app very incorrect, just look at the SOT, my said max screen on time per charge like 5 hours while i was at my 6th, so automatically was wrong.
Scanning is off for lication services but you have notification for open networks which requires frequent scanning and you have keep alive during sleep.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
If you have set your Location service in "high accuracy" or "power saving" modes, then you have also permitted use of Google's location service, which scans wi-fi and/or mobile networks at all times - including when you have supposedly turned your wi-fi "off".
Have you tried a reset of your phone and see if the problem is still there?
Is that an n910c?

As stated in my signature: SM-N910F
Just got confirmation from another n910c owner that the WiFi can account for up to 53% 53% of the battery consumption when turned on. From what I see on the battery thread, the n910f even when connected over WiFi for 40 hours only takes less than 3%.
If we figure this out we will definitely be seeing Snapdragon like battery life.
I'm trying to combat this myself. On another note, how do you have access to WiFi Timer? I don't have that as an option. N910V 4.4.4
That would explain so much. The phone still lasts me a day but I was always surprised by the WiFi battery stat in GSAM and thought it might just be reporting it wrong. I hope this issue (if it is indeed one) is addressed in the 5.0 ROM magically ;_;
I too had massive battery problems. I couldn't use my phone for more than 8 hours.
Then I downloaded this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rrr.android.mediaserverkiller
Set it to kill the server every 1 or two hours.
Now my battery lasts three days!
N910U wifi is 3% for me
Thanks for the datapoint ausboy.
Seems like n910c is the only variant affected.
Samsung should take note, this is why the battery life on the n910u is much better even though both are exynos.
I'm on 4g now and the battery life on 4g is way better than with wifI on. I've tried different routers and it doesn't make too much of a difference.
Not sure why you guys are getting such poor battery life I am getting consistently 7-8 hours screen on time with location on Bluetooth on connected to my gear s sync on pushing 5 email accounts wfi about 75%and when I lte I don't really have a good signal most of the time - I also have a 10,000 mah zero lemon battery but I get such good battery life with the stock battery it is never really needed the extra time
And do you have the n910f or n910c?

I actually meant the feature that let's you set up specific times for WiFi to be turned on automatically. I've got a third party app for that currently and would prefer to have the Samsung version.
Can anyone with the n910c try other firmwares and report back if the n910c still experiences the same problems?
So far two users with the Malaysian firmare experience this wifI battery drain issue. I'm not sure if the others are on the same fw.
Hi, I have been noticing that I have not had that great a battery life as with other users of the note 4. Was searching all this while for an explanation until I came across this thread. I am also using a SM-N910C with XSG firmware that is UAE and am also facing this drain. I installed GSAM as you mentioned and can see that Wifi is accounting for up to 27% for me. I will post the screenshots once I run through and entire charge cycle.
Had earlier contacted Samsung online support about the same but they simply asked to go to a service center and get the battery checked. But I guess that this is a particular issue to only the N910C.

Battery Drain Android One Pie, mobile network standby

Hello, I am new here and couldn't find anything similar in the Mi A2 forum about this battery drain in Android Pie 9.0.
I bought the Mi A2 128gb/6gb two months ago, and since yesterday I realised an abnormal battery drain. When I went to check it out, 37% of the battery was spent in the mobile network standby. Today, after 3 hours of use is around 15% already. In my use, I get between 3 to 5% per hour, now it is between 6 to 10% due to this issue, is infuriating for a phone bought two months ago.
I've been since yesterday trying to find a way to discover the cause, I use 4g LTE most part of my day and the signal is good, urban area, in both sim cards.
Haven't used any custom rom or anything, still standard from the global version, did all the updates, including the latest February 25th. I don't think the update is responsible for that, but it is the only different thing I've done in the last weeks.
Have tried several solutions suggested for others xiaomi models but nothing seemed to work.
Did anyone experience this? Does anyone have a solution?
Yes that is pretty strange. Mobile network standby shouldn't be using up that much battery. Try rebooting the phone to see if it resolves. You could install 3rd party apps such as Greenify to monitor background apps more closely/hibernate them, and Naptime which uses aggressive doze to make sure you get better standby battery life.

Thanks for your answer. haven't tried yet rebooting the phone, I did just the network reset and haven't changed a thing.
I downloaded greenify, but haven't quite used because I can't identify an specific app that is causing the problem.
I am using Greenify, Accubattery GSM Battery, CPU Spy as well.
A strange thing is that the excessive battery drain is allocated in some apps.
Usually, in the android battery use, it shows whatsapp and/or instagram are using the most battery, but when you ask the full device, is when it shows the mobile network.
In the GSM Battery, it says the battery used 12% while turned off and 5% while turned on. It makes no sense.
The only thing I could realize is that when it does get in sleep mode, the battery drain stops, but as soon I start to use it again, it returns to happen. I am afraid is a hardware problem.

Thanks for your answer. I downloaded and monitored for today, most of the time it stays in 633MHz, and Deep Sleep. Both together are above 70%.
I don't think is a CPU problem. I am afraid is something with the antenna
I have an update.
I usually use LTE Network most of my day, today I managed to use wi-fi and the problem is not happening.
I suspecting is either an incompatibility with the Mi A2 network. But my girlfriend has the same phone, but the 64/4gb version and is not experiencing this problem, or and hardware problem with my antenna.
Nobody else has experienced this?

Question Battery Calibration on Exynos S21 Ultra

Hi All,
I seem to have issues with my battery calibration. 100-90% is depleted in 30 mins and 10-0% is depleted in 12 mins under regular usage. BBS and Accubattery don't seem to report anything strange. Also, the phone gets extremely hot during these periods. I have tried disabling sync, location. I have also tried enabling power-saving mode but to no avail. Tried with airplane mode on, removed one sim, switched sim cards but to no avail. I also tried running it down to 0% and charging it with three different chargers, Samsung 15w, Mi 18w, and through type c charging with my laptop. The result stays the same. I also forced software recalibration using *#0228#
I have also reset the phone and set it up without smart sync.
The total battery life has been average but not spectacular. I would like to know if there is anything I can do before I claim the warranty as it would take 3-4 days at my nearest service center and I would like to use keep using my phone
Here are a few important specs:
Processor: Exynos
Dual Sims: Jio and Airtel(Indian)
Software version: XXS2AUBB (March Update)
Accounts: 3- Normal, Dual Messenger and Work Profile
Any help would be appreciated. TIA.
What is your total battery time etc

It's likely that Dual sim is the cause for the rapid drain. Did you try running only 1 sim for a day? If the issue persists, then perform an ODIN clean install. If the issue is still there, then send it to service centre
Try wiping phone cache, also instal thermal Guardian from Galaxy labs and see if temps are rly high, if it is try lower the thermal threshold, heat is very bad for batteries so it might be the problem. What are you doing when phone gets hot? I usually get 1 hour SOT from 10%.

The battery life per se is not that bad. It is higher than what i have got from my OP8 pro and S10 plus. But my concern is the uneven battery drain. 100-90% is something i can live with. But 10-0% literally is like a new year's countdown..
And my signal strength is always excellent and i have vowifi on. So i thought that shouldn't be a concern.
I am not a very heavy user.. Most of my work is mail, google meet and youtube.

If its just the drain, it should have been fine. It gets ridiculously hot during the drain. There is also an option in Find My mobile to enable sending the location during the last few battery %. Toggling it off didn't help either.

The frame and back of the phone are too hot to touch.. and the screen gets uncomfortably warm. Cpu Monitor hovers around 65 degrees c.
I had an Galaxy s20 FE 5G and now i have S21 ultra and both are draining from 100-90% quickly, I think its the way Samsung is, I guess. I heard this complaint many times and in forums i have read and posted people keep saying its normal for Samsung devices.

Hi..try to do an ODIN reset. That should most likely solve the issue. If you still have the option to return/ replace the device, then that would be a better bet.
24h ago flashed (with Odin) G998BXXU3AUDA ... so far so good . Its too early for conclusions , better battery life is noticeable and no more phone overheating , ... but I will wait for the next few days for a complete conclusion.
One thing to note that if you are using 5G then expect higher battery usage. 5G is data only so a 4G connection is also required for texts and calls, this means when using 5G you actually have to keep two connections to the cell towers. If you have 5G available maybe try turning that off for a day to see what difference it makes.

Hi All,
I seem to have issues with my battery calibration.
TIA.

Please update to the latest version of the update - AUC8 (with the April Patch).
Then, please do a cache wipe.
And wait on a few days for the software to understand and adapt to your usage.
Hopefully things should work out for the better.
